11 Best Fried Chicken Restaurants in Charleston | Eater Carolinas

"West Ashley restaurant Ms. Rose’s Fine Food & Cocktails offers its “famous” fried chicken with a honey Tabasco sauce that keeps folks coming back. The decadent mac and cheese doesn’t hurt either." - Erin Perkins

Ms. Rose’s Fine Food is a treat in Charleston! The food was absolutely delicious—highly recommend the avocado burger with the gluten-free bun, which was sturdy, flavorful, and a perfect match. The meatloaf with mashed potatoes and green beans was another standout. Don’t leave without trying the brisket fries—mouthwatering! The restaurant is spacious, the staff is warm and welcoming, and our waitress Raven gave top-notch service with great recommendations for us first-timers. We’ll definitely be back!

Google
Will definitely try again. I had the avocado bacon ranch burger with the plant based meat, very very good. The burger was so tall I had to eat it with a knife and fork.

Google
We had a group of 5 for brunch. They sat us immediately. The service was good and we enjoyed the food. Coming from the west we wanted to try something different. We had the shrimp and grits, the honey and tobasco fried chicken and some other dishes. We were happy with the servings. I really enjoyed the atmosphere! I recommend this place!

Google
I had the absolute BEST birthday dinner here last night. Our server Diane handled our group of 20+ with ease. The food and drinks were wonderful and we had the most incredible time. Thank you guys again!

Google
Came in for lunch during the week and it was great. Enjoyed the space and our server was fantastic, I wish I could remember her name. She was older, quirky, and so nice. My friend and I came in and both ordered a cup of the chili and some spicy margs. Left very happy.

Google
GREAT food!! They advertise they won 1st Place in both southern fried chicken challenge and shrimp and grits challenge. After we sampled these on their menu, I have no doubts they won. We arrived on a Friday evening, later than normal dinner time, and got seated immediately. The waitress greeted us soon thereafter and was super friendly, explained the menu, and took our drink order. Drinks came out pretty quickly. Alcohol from the bar came out a few minutes later. The food came out pretty quickly, about 10 minutes. Everything was GREAT! The shrimp and grits were some of the best I've ever had. The grits themselves were outstanding, very creamy, smooth. My son got the chicken sandwich and said it was one of the best he's had. My wife got a grilled chicken sandwich on a homemade gluten-free bun. Our other son got a Reuben, one of his favorites, and it disappeared in a few minutes so it must've been good. The facilities were super clean and everything looked new. Staff was great. Prices weren't too bad and considering the quality and portions of the food, we felt it was a great value. We will visit again and recommend it to others.

Google
This was a weekly staple for my husband and myself. Unfortunately not anymore. The menu has been drastically cut back. Everything that we consistently ordered is now gone. We never frequented Ms. Roses for the atmosphere as it is ok and at times it does smell like mold. We will miss the food. Good luck!

Google
We came to Ms. Rose's for mother's day brunch. Most of the food was good, with a couple of stand-outs. My veggie breakfast bowl was absolutely amazing with all the fresh vegetables, I would definitely order it again if I was here for brunch. My daughter loved the shrimp and grits. The rest of the entrees were more basic, but still good (cheeseburger, fish and chips, omelet). Overall a place with good food and plenty of options so everyone can find something they enjoy.

Yelp
Ms. Roses is a fantastic place for lunch or dinner in West Ashley! Location is convenient for anyone around Charleston, which makes it a great place for meeting friends who live all over town. My friend and I met for lunch. I had the Shrimp Po Boy Sandwich with Sweet Potato fries. Our server was very friendly! Excellent customer service. Looking forward to visiting here again for another special occasion.

Yelp
I've been wanting to try this spot for a while and finally made it (Closed Sundays) for happy hour (4-7) and had some excellent fresh food and drinks. I'd reserve online, had a 45 min wait and the bar was full. Plenty of beers on tap, good mixed drinks and tasty apps. Entrees were amazing and the portions were large. The famous fried chicken was crispy and juicy as can be but the shrimp and grits is what will bring me back next time. Took home some banana pudding cheesecake which was unreal and long gone before another photo op. Good date spot or dinner spot, plenty of screens and games to watch, looking forward to trying them again.

Yelp
Large parking lot ... spacious dining room ... attentive service ... well priced menu ... delicious food - that's 5 stars! This oldie, but, goody still rocks!

Yelp
First time here for brunch and it won't be the last! Huge portions and great flavor!! We started with the breakfast routine.... the fries were fried to perfection and covered with sausage gravy and cheese. A whole new level for fries! I chose the Reuben for my entrée. It was perfect... tons of meat and cheese! It was huge! Then we finished off with the Banana Pudding Cheesecake.... wow! So delicious and light! The service was amazing and we will be back!!

Yelp
Excellent food in a comfortable setting. I had no trouble getting to the outside patio with my walker. The service was lovely; friendly and prompt. I had shrimp and grits, not something I eat in California, and they were delicious.
google avatar

Yelp
Great brunch spot! We tried the shrimp and grits, the biscuit cinnamon roll and the biscuits and gravy. All were delicious and very flavorful. The Bloody Mary with the Carolina reaper vodka was pretty good but not quite as spicy as we thought it would be. The mimosas were all good but cranberry and orange were the best

Yelp
Service and food very disappointing on 6/11/24. I had the shrimp and grits. The cornbread came out burnt and so hard I could not bite into it. I've never eaten grits with a fork, but tonight I did. No spoon was brought out to me. My family member ordered the fried chicken sandwich. A chicken salad sandwich was brought out to him. Our waitress never checked on us. I had to track her down to pay the bill. Maybe this was just a bad night for them, but it will be a while before I go back.

Yelp
They definitely treat you like family here. We've come a couple of times and they remember us each time. Could have something to do with the wonderful hurricanes they make that one time. The food, especially brunch and specialty omelette that changes weekly are always on point. We always make a reservation so we can get one of our favorite booths. Totally friendly relaxing place to sit and enjoy time with friends and family.

Yelp
I visited Charleston a year ago and wasn't able to try this restaurant. I made sure to try it this time around and was quite disappointed. Online ordering was very easy and the pictures of the food made it easy to pick what I wanted to eat. The restaurant was pretty crowded when I went to pick my order up and everyone seemed to be having a good time. My food was ready and I didn't have to wait a long time. The packing of my carryout order was cute. I loved the stickers they closed the boxes with. I was quite excited and thought I would definitely enjoy my food, but the scrumptious looking pictures did not match the taste of my food. I ordered wings, fries, and the banana pudding cheesecake. My wings were so hard and dry, my fries were not good, the veggies and ranch were not even good. How does ranch taste nasty? The cheesecake was too textured for my liking. I was actually chewing banana pieces. I thought the cheesecake would have been smoother? I would usually try a place a second time, but when visiting from out of town, time is of the essence and trying the same place again isn't an option when the first time wasnt a good experience. I need that time to try a place I wasnt able to visit before. Hopefully others have a better experience than I did.

Yelp
The food here is always fantastic and locally sourced. We came with a party of 11 made a reservation and had a fantastic brunch. Ambience is perfect and there is plenty of parking. I've been here well over a dozen times and every time it has been fantastic and the food is simply delicious.

Yelp
I went to Ms. Roses for the first time the other week and it's a really cool spot! The decor was fun and there were a lot of tvs for sports. They have a decent happy hour, and I had the fried chicken sandwich which was pretty good. As were the fried green tomatoes. It was more of an elevated bar food vibe.

Yelp
Located in a convenient location, Rose's is a high-quality restaurant with exemplary service. The sweet potato fries are scrumptious - the sweetness of the honey and the tartness of the blue cheese are a perfect blend. Rose's is renowned for the cocktails. The Rose's reliever was a refreshing, well-balanced drink, which complimented my Rose's famous fried chicken well. My mother got the Reuben with onion rings, dill pickle on the side. All in all, this is one of the best joints in the West Ashley and Charleston. Give it a look see and see for yourself!

Yelp
Food was delicious and the service was on point!!! I would go again. The place was clean. Nice outside patio. It was to hot outside to sit

Yelp
Always a great time with great service and even better food. Happy hour here is also always going to make you happy. We love the indoor/outdoor option and enjoy just about every single thing this place has to offer! Hands down my favorite WA place to go for any event. It can be fancy or casual, whatever vibe you're going for. Hurry up and get here!

Yelp
I really wanted to love this place. Even after reading some of the not so great reviews, I thought this was one of those "I need to see it for myself" places. If you chose to brunch here I highly recommend making a reservation, we made one and still waited. I felt for the staff- they seemed very overwhelmed. Drinks and food were overpriced and average at best. Everything took forever. I even found a hair in my fish and grits. Yuck! Literally saw it as soon as the server put the plate down (it was that obvious) she quickly took it away but my "re-made" order came back in minutes. It was quite the turn off how long our food and drinks took but as soon as a hair was found it was a different story. Nothing was comped off the bill, at the very least a manager could have stopped by but nope. Finally, a silver lining- the gravy on the fish and grits was the best thing about this visit. Very yummy. We also got the fried chicken with a side of sweet potatoes, chicken was dry but the honey Tabasco dipping sauce it came with was delicious. The brunch menu was disappointing. Limited options (probably due to Covid). There is NO CRAB BENNY on the brunch menu. One of the reasons we wanted to try this place was bc of the pics on Yelp! Our server told us it was no longer on the menu because the kitchen kept messing up the poached eggs. Drinks were average, not much to write Yelp about. Brunch always calls for bloody marys and a pitcher of mimosas. What really got me was the presentation (not in a good way). The flutes for the mimosas looked like they had never been washed. Yikes. They had dried pulp all in them. When I asked our server for clean glasses her response was "Oh sorry but those are the prettiest ones I found, plus it's just pulp". Like WHAT?! She said that's how all of their glasses are. Makes you think twice about the cleanliness and standards of things you can't see. Mentally prepare for an over priced-mediocre brunch. I hope this place can find its way back to some of the amazing Yelp reviews from the past. I'm rootin for ya. Until then, I will not be back.

Yelp
Tried the fried chicken today w sweet potato fries. The chicken was moist, but the coating was really hard and crunchy. The sweet potato fries were excellent! My server disappeared after dropping food off. Never saw her again until I flagged her down to get check!
google avatar

Yelp
My son is a Marine! As of today. First time here and always wanted to come! Sorry no pictures of the appetizers, which were great!!! So yummy. The photos below are a sample of what we had. It was really a great meal for all. Shout out to Audrey who made us free at home. Thank you Audrey for your attention and care. Please I highly recommend this spot!!!

Yelp
I've passed by here so many times on my way home and have been curious to find out whether the curb appeal matched the food & drinks! My friends and I were looking for a place with yummy cocktails and cute aesthetics and food! Ms. Rose's Fine Food definitely delivered! The drinks we ordered were all super delicious! I got the Rose's Reliever and a Paloma Mule! My friends were equally impressed with their drinks, but one was just too strong. We asked the bartender if we could get a side of juice to help with the bite and she even suggested a juice that would compliment it better. She also checked on us to make sure it was better! My brisket sandwich was nice and juicy and I enjoyed the sweet potato fries! I would definitely like to come back and try other items! Great service, nice ambience and scenery! Highly recommend!

Yelp
I really had high hopes for this place, and I think that's why I was left wanting more. Visited this place based on a recommendation from a cousin who's local, so I ran to Yelp. Y'all images and reviews didn't disappoint. When we pulled up I couldn't help but think about how cute this place must be when the weather is nice! Sure it's a vibe... When we visited it was a mild day, but we still opted to dine outside. I think that was the first mistake we made. Brunch isn't brunch without mimosas, right? They offer a mimosa flight composed of a variety of flavors, but I really just wanted a regular mimosa! I feel like us sitting outside caused us to have slow service. When we ordered it seemed like it took awhile for the food to come, and it wasn't really hot when it was served. I was also a little disappointed with the portion. When I ordered the French toast and chicken I was expecting pieces of chicken, not tenders. I will say the food was good. I was so hungry I ate a tender before I was able to snap a pic of my plate! I'd come back to try other things on the menu (like that cinnamon roll!)

Yelp
We went to Ms Rose's the last two Saturday's. They have lunch specials, a small brunch menu, and their all day menu options. The first Saturday there was 9 of us. Today, 14. They're able to handle a large party efficiently from the drinks to the food to the checks. The coolest thing that happened today was when she put our order in, the kitchen realized we had 4 kids and they had their chicken tenders out super quick and before our food. Way to save the kids from having melt downs!! I had the fried green tomato po boy with baked Mac and cheese the first visit and the Big Ben lunch special burger the second time. The fried green tomato sammy was awesome!! I took home the left overs and enjoyed it a couple days later. The Mac was good to. It was smoky as if maybe bacon was used. The Big Ben smash burger wasn't as delicious as I thought it would be. With all the delicious smash burgers in town right now, I anticipated a "smashed" paper thin patty with crispy edges. And I wanted more of the sauce! You know me and my sauces!! I didn't even taste it on my burger and have no idea what it had in it to detect why it was called the special sauce. If you find yourself in West Ashley, check out Ms Roses. Oh yes and today our server had a great sense of humor. Sarcasm noted and appreciated!

Yelp
Was there March 01, 2024, ordered the Double Smashburger with fries.....Driest most overcooked burger ever. While sitting there with my co-worker across from me a roach was walking on the back of his seat. Only second time there first time was not impressive either ordering their way over breaded fried chicken, though I'd give it another chance yesterday. Won't be going back!

Yelp
We stopped into Ms Rose's for dinner while in Charleston. The appetizers were ok. The table thought the fried green tomatoes were ok, as they thought the tomato and mozzarella was ok. We ordered the 2 biscuits and they were meh. (Skip them kfc has better and was more buttery ones) The biscuits came out room temp. Our server was friendly and helpful. When dinner came, the chicken salad was great, the grilled chicken sandwich was also good. The pulled chicken was fair and the cornbread that came with 2 huge servings was dry and also meh. I ordered the fried chicken sandwich and it was probably the best sandwich I've had while in the area. The Mac & cheese was good. On a scale of 1-10 it was a solid 7. The atmosphere seemed to be one that could certainly be much more fun in a warm evening. 4 stars because the biscuits and cornbread seemed to leave us with something to be desired. However, the other bites and the fact that the young man waiting on us was attentive and happy helped us see the light. Would we go back? For the fried chicken sandwich yes.

Scher S.

Yelp
Chicken was just ok. I'm from Charleston where we dry chicken a couple times a week so wasn't impressed. Menu selections sound good but ok. Very nice atmosphere & loved the idea of brunch here but it was a little disappointing. Great experience but the food was just average; nothing to write home about.
google avatar

Alonzo W.

Yelp
The best brunch spot in Charleston! The food is AMAZING and just the whole vibe of the restaurant is great
google avatar

Lisa S.

Yelp
Loved this place. Looked up best fried chicken in Charleston and this was on the list. The decor was down right inspiring. Lots of detail to admire. And the food was amazing! Chicken biscuit with pimento cheese was beyond incredible. I'd choose a side other than Mac and cheese. Excellent service. .
google avatar

Gloria P.

Yelp
This place was soooo good. There wasn't anything we ordered that wasn't delicious. From the drinks to the appetizers to the main course was perfection. We didn't have room for dessert, but I would imagine that to be awesome as well. The food is seasoned, so there no need to add additional, and the portion sizes were on point. If ever in Charleston. SC, you must try this place.
google avatar

Jodi S.

Yelp
Very nice place! Great service and excellent shrimp and grits! Highly recommend and we will be going back! Hoping to hit brunch next time!

Yelp
Ms. Rose's is an asset to the culinary scene in West Ashley . The service is always consistent and prompt and the ambiance casual and welcoming . I opted to try the restaurant week feature this visit and although it was not my favorite , I will still be back to support this local business ! I ordered the prime rib and my biggest criticism is mainly a personal quip - when I eat red meat I believe you shave 10 seconds off your life span so the meat better be amazing ! This entree just didn't check off all the life span shortening boxes for me . The texture was tough and chewy and the flavor was overpoweringly smoky - it almost seemed like a smoky marinade versus being actually smoked . Overall, I would not order this again but I don't think it's something they keep on the menu, just a restaurant week feature . I am confident if you dine here you will enjoy your meal, just skip the prime rib if you see it on the menu .
google avatar

Ward B.

Yelp
Food is stellar. Best sweet fries I've ever had, period. Server was great and the environment is welcoming. I'll come back for sure!!!
google avatar

Calvin D.

Yelp
Food was horrible!!!! Don't ever come to this place...Straight rip off...What was the person who opened this place was thinking....Nice waitress that's all I can say was good about this place...The chicken was pre-breaded and the cornbread tasted like rubber...The seafood boil wasn't seasoned at all and it was 3 shrimps,4 potatoes, and 2 corn...Stay away!!!!!
google avatar

Sherry K.

Yelp
Since moving to Charleston I've been to Ms. Roses several times over the years. This last time, the service was great, food just wasn't up to their usual. Maybe it was the day, not sure. If you enjoy pub fare & good drinks, check it out.

Lucy V.

Yelp
We had a lovely dinner - the server was kind and friendly, and did not rush us from our table after dinner. She brought refills for drinks frequently and checked on us often. The food was really good - butternut squash ravioli, meat loaf, and cobb salad. The seating and ambiance was very comfortable. Not many patrons on a Saturday evening, and we don't understand why. Would definitely go back.
google avatar

Chelsea B.

Yelp
I came here for lemon meringue pie (for a book picture) but they were out. They had just changed their menu to more seasonal selections. I had the fried green tomato po boy with bacon added. It was very yummy. I also had their Mac and cheese as a side and it was just okay. A tad flavorless. I had to add salt to it. I'm picky about my Mac and cheese and this one just didn't cut it for me. Sandwich was great and huge. Service was wonderful too and I love the atmosphere here. It's actually this place that made me love fried green tomatoes with pimento cheese! I came here a few years ago and tried this combination for the first time and now I LOVE it!
google avatar

Kelsie W.

Yelp
The food is gross and overpriced. So overrated. I would not recommend. Sorry but it's true.
google avatar

Joe T.

Yelp
Look, I'm aware there's a lot more to Ms. Rose's than French Toast and Chicken, but that's what I picked so this is what this review will be about. The atmosphere of this place is top notch. Our waiter was top notch, but the French Toast and overly breaded Chicken wasn't. You can make a better French Toast at home.
google avatar

Kay S.

Yelp
Food was delicious. Large serving and worth the price. Service was great. Will eat here again.
google avatar

Michelle W.

Yelp
Food was good but overpriced for what we received. Atmosphere was fun and retro which we liked.
google avatar

Joye R.

Yelp
Great place ! Just what West Ashley needs! Good food, nice venue and great location.

Shaun H.

Yelp
I hosted a large party of nearly 25 folks on a Thursday evening in this establishment completely wowed us all! From setting up the reservation, (online) and getting text reminders--It was all a piece of cake. I arrived an hour early and Brian (manager) already had our table set up, and it looked spectacular. The assortment of menu items, prices, drinks, food, friendly faces, and overall ambience--- confirmed that this was a tremendous location to host our event. The "cherry on top" of it all was the attentive service of Gretchen, who made sure each guest felt important and greeted us all with so many different orders going on, she did not miss a beat and impressed us all with her work ethic And genuine smile. I will definitely be coming back to the establishment for future dinners and requesting Gretchen again.
google avatar

Kameron C.

Yelp
Best cocktails and ramen I've had in awhile, thank you!! Chef even came out to ask how the food was, as well as the manager.

Julia W.

Yelp
Honestly this place is haywire. We had a Bach party, and got drinks spilled and dropped on us. One of the girls had literal glass shattered and it was in her pants, and all they did was take 1 drink off. After talking with a manager, all they did was take 25% off the bill. Not to mention it took OVER 1 hour for our food to even come out, AND it was wrong. They were very unprofessional, and proceeded to make us late for the following event. 3 1/2 hours is plenty of time to eat and get elsewhere, and the amount of time we spent because of the lack of attention, and care. Don't come here, honestly like not worth it I don't care how local you are

Jim B.

Yelp
I was there with four family members. Everyone liked their food and the service. The only complaint I have is that I ordered the Omelette and only got one slice of toast with it. I've always gotten two slices of toast with any breakfast meal I've ever ordered.
google avatar

Laura B.

Yelp
Our server was very pleasant, but busy. The restaurant decor is good. However, the food was a let down. My $17.00 burger was awful. Very small burger for the price. I ordered it medium and got it extremely well done. My husbands Caesar Salad was no better than the bagged variety at the store. Nothing tasted very good. I will not return
google avatar

Stephen J.

Yelp
Good food!!! Disappointed they stopped the mac and cheese. Good staff and nice atmosphere
google avatar

Sri R.

Yelp
Matt, Dillon and Becky are Outstanding. They excel in their work, They know their job really well. Their corn bread with butter is highly delicious. Definitely recommend to try. Fried green tomatoes was great. They place Suoer Bruno Mars just the way you are & love teenage dream by Katy Perry. Outstanding song selection. Gretchen is highly helpful!
google avatar

Hosea B.

Yelp
I truly wish I could explain how good this food is. I'm from Charleston so I know good red rice. Growing up here I also know good seafood. THIS PLACE IS KILL'N IT!!!! And God forbid I tell you about the dessert!!!
google avatar

Sharon M.

Yelp
Delicious food, very accommodating staff (two large parties in the restaurant when we walked in but we were seated and treated fairly, was warned that service and kitchen might be slower than usual). Drinks were great (white sangria-I must have another!). Shrimp and grits, pulled pork and brisket and fish/chips were excellent. Hush puppies are the best I've had. I'd cross town to go back .
google avatar

Ashton M.

Yelp
I went back to Ms. Rose's yesterday after many years away. I was pleasantly surprised. The decor is cute and fun. Service was polite and attentive. We ordered an appetizer of pretzels, and I had an entree of a beet/goat cheese spinach salad with chicken added. The food wasn't anything I couldn't easily make at home, but it was good. Ms. Rose's had great draft beer options. I went with a blueberry sour from Freehouse. I wouldn't necessarily say run to Ms. Rose's, but this was a convenient spot to meet others for a meal. I'd come back here!

Veronica F.

Yelp
Love their Mac & cheese‍‍‍it was once off the menu but by customer demand it's backThe staff are wonderful and courteous!!! They are knowledgeable about their menu and make great suggestions

Yelp
It's a beautiful Saturday and my taste buds brought me over to West Ashley to Ms. Rose's. What an awesome meal. I had the fish and grits and pulled pork Benedict. I will say this place has some of the best fried fish and sweet potato fries I've ever had. The fish just melts in your mouth and blended so well with the Parmesan grits. Our waitress Gretchen made our experience all the more amazing recommending dishes that we thoroughly enjoyed. This place is easily in my top 10 for brunch spots. Check it out if you are in the West Ashley neck of the woods!
