"MSSM Yorkville is Chef Masaki Saito's second restaurant in Toronto, aimed at making his Edomae style sushi more accessible. Excellent Omekase option in Toronto. The chef was amazing. Attention to detail incredible. The rice was exquisite, and the preparation of all the dishes was artfully done. Each course came with a delightful explanation. The wine and sake pairings were exceptional.

Went for a quick birthday celebration and had a great time overall. The vibe was cool and laid-back, and the omakase was delicious — fresh, well-balanced, and beautifully presented. We paired it with Dassai 45, and the uni kiss and uni sushi were definite highlights. The chef was friendly and welcoming. They didn’t do anything special for the birthday, which was a little surprising, but the food and experience still made it a memorable night.

Located on the second floor of 154 Cumberland Street in Yorkville, MSSM offers an intimate and refined omakase experience at a price point of $98 per person. This establishment is the brainchild of Michelin-starred chef Masaki Saito, who envisioned MSSM as both a restaurant and a training ground for aspiring sushi chefs. Here, diners can witness the meticulous craftsmanship of chefs trained under Saito’s guidance, delivering a 14-course Edomae-style omakase that emphasizes both tradition and innovation. Upon entering MSSM, guests are greeted by a sleek, modern interior that blends urban aesthetics with traditional Japanese elements. The ambiance is lively yet intimate, with bar seating that allows diners to observe the chefs at work. The restaurant operates on a reservation-only basis, with bookings opening one week in advance. It’s worth noting that MSSM is a cashless establishment, so be prepared to pay by card. The 14-course menu is a curated journey through seasonal and high-quality ingredients. Standout dishes include the toro (bluefin tuna belly) nigiri, which melts in the mouth, and the torched sea bream appetizer that offers a delightful balance of flavors. The miso soup, infused with truffle and shiitake mushrooms, deviates from the traditional, presenting a richer, more complex profile. Desserts like the hojicha cheesecake or shiso sorbet provide a refreshing end to the meal. Service at MSSM is attentive and knowledgeable, with chefs engaging diners by explaining each course and the inspiration behind it. The staff ensures that plates are promptly cleared, and beverages are consistently refilled. The atmosphere is enhanced by a curated playlist, often featuring throwback R&B tunes, adding a modern twist to the dining experience. In summary, MSSM Yorkville offers a unique blend of traditional Japanese omakase with modern twists, all at an accessible price point. Whether you’re a sushi aficionado or new to the omakase experience, MSSM provides a memorable dining journey that showcases the artistry and passion behind each dish. If you need assistance with reservations or have further questions, feel free to ask!

As much as I would love to rave about this place, I found the experience to be just okay. The fish wasn't the greatest, and the rice was falling apart every single time we picked up a nigiri. We all agreed the best piece was the first hand roll, and the experience went down hill from there. What made it worse was that I had specifically wrote down that we were coming for a birthday celebration. When we were sat down, not once was the birthday mentioned. When I saw another group getting on the house birthday rolls and the chef singing happy birthday to them, I mentioned to the staff that I had wrote down in the reservation we were coming for a birthday and were wondering if we would get anything similar for the birthday person. She then said that there wasn't going to be anything special for us and just simply said happy birthday quietly to me (not even the birthday person). It was quite jarring to see the group down the table having this experience and nothing for us. I also heard the server tell the chef in Korean that we were celebrating a birthday, to which he didn't say anything and didn't bring it up to us. He basically disregarded that part of our celebration. We also felt a bit rushed during our experience with the pieces coming out so fast. The Chef also didn't engage a lot with us as much as the other chefs we saw down the table. Overall, I would not come back here again, especially given the fact that normal things like a birthday were not acknowledged by the staff here.

AMAZING!!! Loved it so much. Had an amazing Valentine’s Day dinner date here. Our Chef was very knowledgeable, respectful and kind. Was attentive to all of our questions. Already made another reservation for next week to bring some more friends! The restaurant was really cute and had some great music. Thanks so much for the good vibes and spectacular food. Also, the sake flight was delicious.

We had a blast for our early dinner at Mssm. Chef Matthew explained to us in detail not only the ingredients for each one and he also recommended us to consume the sushi within 10 seconds in one bite. My first time experience using my hand to eat a sushi. I like the hand roll started from beginning till the end with matcha dessert. In general it worth for this experience.

My wife and I came here to celebrate our first year anniversary, and were blown away by the quality of the sushi at this price point. The service staff was attentive, and Chef Tong with his decade of experience as a sushi and omakase chef taught us about the fish of each sushi being served. The atmosphere is more laid-back and modern than most traditional omakase restaurants, and yet the edomae-style sushi is authentic and uncompromised in quality. Highly recommend to any enthusiast of authentic Japanese cuisine! Having come from Asian countries where Japanese cuisine is more prevalent, my wife and I feel really lucky to be able to access this level of omakase in Toronto, without having to break the bank. Thank you Chef Tong for serving us with your skills today! PS. To the Korean waitress who served us today, we went to Hodou Kwaja in Koreatown to have walnut cake and pancake. Give it a try!
