The Highest Places in America

"The highest point in Pennsylvania at 3,213 feet above sea level, Mount Davis commands a wide view of the Allegheny Mountains made possible by an observation tower which reaches above the trees atop a large rock which traveled to the surface thanks to fluctuating temperatures. The mountaintop is home to a unique phenomenon called “sorted stones.” The constant freezing and unfreezing of the ground on the mountain has pushed sandstone boulders from underneath the surface through the ground in patterns. The highest point and survey marker is on top of one of these boulders, and several others have been adorned with plaques that tell the story of the peak’s namesake, John Nelson Davis among other histories of farming, lumbering, mining, and even just odd stories from the area. One such story regards a Lydia Shultz, the “wild child” of the mountains, who got lost in the area while looking for lost cows. She was not found until several months later, and had become feral, hiding from search parties when they approached. The floor of the observation tower is also overlaid with a metal topographical map of the area complete with arrows pointing out the local landmarks, so all around and underfoot Mount Davis provides visitors with something to look at." - ATLAS_OBSCURA

State Highpoint number 12, PA. The road up to the parking lot is excellent. The observation tower provides 360° views 👌 Fabulous ✨️

Mt. Davis Viewpoint was breathtaking — wide open skies, crisp mountain air, and panoramic views that made everything feel still and endless.

It's not the most spectacular mountain summit I have ever visited, but it is the highest point in Pennsylvania. The road is in good shape with a nice overlook before you get to the high point. The parking area offers plenty of spaces. The walk to the high point and tower is short with interpretative markers of the geology and history of the area. The observation tower takes you above the canopy and offers views of the surrounding countryside. I'm glad we visited. I learned a little and marked another high point off our list.

It's a great hike around the peak. Watch out for rattlesnakes. Look for the rare Woodrat. Stay on the trails because the underbrush is too thick to leave them most of the time.

PA Highest point. Lookout tower was cool. Sturdy. The USGS marker is on the very top of the Boulder next to the tower. The highpoint trail is very pretty especially down along the stream and the boulders.

obviously mt Davis is the coolest place in PA and this is q great spot to enjoy its beauty! the tower has quite a few stairs and is narrow but its worth braving any fears you may have. . read the stories on the plaques below. there are 2 local legends, 1 about baughman rocks which is nearby and worth a visit

Very neat to see. I love the overlook and I bet it gorgeous in the fall. I was amazed by all the different variations of trees and plants. You don’t usually see such a variety in one area. It’s definitely beautiful and peaceful. The picnic area by the restrooms is also very nice. Everything is very well maintained and clean.
