"Mt. Everest Restaurant has been serving up Northern Indian and Nepalese fare in downtown Evanston since 1998, providing an excellent place for a family dinner, a first date or a takeout meal sure to provide plenty of leftovers. For an affordable taste, take advantage of their lunch platters available for dine-in or to-go, which include rice, naan, and a choice of two entrees such as mutter paneer or chicken vindaloo." - Samantha Nelson

Was excited for the return of the buffet….was disappointed that all the dishes were lack luster. The variety is still there but not nearly as tasty as pre-covid. And the rice pudding tasted so odd. The naan is still pretty good.

Google
The food is pretty good. The business thali available during lunch hours is a very good deal. So far I’ve tried Paneer Chilli, Aloo Tikki, Aloo parantha, Paneer Tikka Masala. All had good portion sizes. The Aloo Tikki was covered with Chana masala which made it so good. -1 star cause Aloo Parantha and Paneer Tikka Masala could use more flavors and spices.

Google
What an exceptional experience. I visited the Mt. Everest restaurant for the first time. The food was divine. The Vegetable Samosas were so delicious! 😋 As was my hot spicy chicken curry. I highly recommend you visit this restaurant if you've not gone yet.

Google
Really tasty food at a great price. The veggie samosa was wonderful. Order was enough for 2 full meals.

Noal B

Google
The flavors were authentic, and every dish was cooked to perfection. The staff were friendly and attentive, making the evening even more enjoyable. Highly recommend the butter chicken and garlic naan! Will definitely be back.

Google
Best Indian buffet I've been to in the Chicagoland area. The wings are unlike anything I've had at any other restaurant. Great mix of the most popular faves, like butter chicken, goat curry, and daal makhani. Will be back specifically for more of those wings.

Google
Personally, I love Indian food. I'm not going to say that this is the most authentic Indian food that you're ever going to eat..... However, it is some of the best Americanized Indian food you're ever gonna eat. It's the perfect place to take someone who is unfamiliar with Indian cuisine. Would I bring my friend from Nepal or Northern India here? Frankly, no. But would I bring my grandmother from Michigan here? Yes. That's not to say that this place doesn't have great food; it does! I especially recommend the buffet! All I'm saying is that it's the *perfect* place to introduce someone to Indian food, especially if they have a much more, let's say, American palette.

Google
Buffet was really good. The variety of dishes is impressive, each bursting with authentic flavors. Fresh, delicious, and excellent value. Highly recommend!

Yelp
Excellent Indian food served quickly in nice setting. Portion sizes just right. Service is good. Spent a lot of time in India on business - not exactly like eating there but close enough.

Shannon S.

Yelp
I ordered food from here on Uber Eats. They were having a buy one get one free deal on Chicken Tikka Masala and Naan. I also decided to try their vegetable pakora. I was pretty disappointed... the masala sauce had NO flavor. It tastes like nothing. I was shocked. The vegetable pakora is also sort of stale flavor. I'm giving three stars because I got a bunch of food for the price, but I might have to try and find a way to spice it up on my own. Everything is so flavorless it tastes like bland prison food. I'm pretty disappointed. I can vouch for the naan, and the rice though (lol).

Marc T.

Yelp
We always like coming here and the food is very good. We came here last Saturday and when we walked in there was a terrible smell in the restaurant. I don't know if it was their cleaning product or what but it really smelled bad. It was distracting from the quality of the food. The food itself was very good especially the Tandoori Chicken and the Goan Fish Curry. The Aloo Gobi was just ok nothing special. chicken Tikka was also very good. Hopefully the smell was just a one time deal. I wouldn't go back if it's like that again.

Stuart G.

Yelp
First time back since I moved from Chicago and I was deeply disappointed. Flavorless, overcooked food, coupled with large groups of students with no regard for other diners.

Evelyn L.

Yelp
Don't bother getting the buffet. I tried a little bit of everything, and at least half of the food is bland. Most of the curries, including the Rogan Josh, Tikka Masala, Chana Masala, and Palak Paneer tastes like I got COVID - I truly did wonder if I caught it. The Masala Wings also tasted like nothing and one of the pieces felt raw - way too chewy to have been properly cooked. The okra and one other curry I forget the name of (bright yellow with a tang) were not bad, and the garlic naan, hard to mess up, was also okay. With that said, I've never had Indian food this bad. I have been to a few other buffets and they were good, it didn't taste like they were trying to sharply cut costs and use water instead of tomato pastes. It barely, barely gets two stars because the interior is nice, and all the wait staff were attentive and friendly.

Yelp
Went despite some recent negative reviews on Yelp. Never been, ordered the mocktail (a peach mule) and aloo gobhi. Both excellent. Drink was fizzy refreshing goodness. Aloo was lovely, tho not saucy. The fluffy basmati rice comes with a few peas & carrots in it, which I enjoyed. Ate only half, so for $16, was a great price, as I have a leftover meal now. Service was prompt and courteous. Would def go back!

Sarah P.

Yelp
OK, so food-wise? Banging. The veggie samosas are lovely, and the dips are amazing: a green cilantro-adjacent dip that is not TOO spicy, and a savory plum dip that's not too sweet. My Gosht Pasanda was mouth-watering and not spicy at ALL. (I ordered Spice Level 1, which is a step above their mildest option). My partner liked their Chicken Makhani (Spicy) and both the naan and roti were EXCELLENT. Lost a star because we only received one side of rice, which wasn't nearly enough (I'm thinking maybe they left one out of our to-go order accidentally?) and the portion sizes are fairly small for the $17-19 the cost (at least, compared to similar places with similarly-priced meals). We'll DEFINITELY be back, because OMG THE GOSHT PASANDA, but it will probably be more "special occasion" eatery than "I've got a hankering for Indian food - wanna grab lunch?" eatery.

Yelp
Title: MT Everest - A Culinary Ascent 5/5 Mt Everest offers an unforgettable Nepalese and Himalayan dining experience. The cozy ambiance, warm service, and talented chef create a delightful atmosphere. Must-tries include succulent Momos and aromatic Thukpa, showcasing the region's unique flavors. Impeccable service and the chef's passion make this culinary journey a true gem. Don't miss it!

Robin C.

Yelp
The food was good. We ordered the family 4 deal $59. It was a lot of food . The naan was delicious. The curry came out slightly cold. The servers were polite and kept our water full. We would recommend this place.

Prachi J.

Yelp
Ordered take out from here with a group of friends. We ordered: - paneer tikka masala - dal makhni - bread basket We'd also asked for veg momos but the restaurant packed us rice instead, which was a bummer since we had made rice at home already. Oh well. We asked for Indian spice, but the food was honestly quite bland. It was missing spice altogether! The bread basket was pretty nice - good amount of variety and definitely more than enough for just 3 people!

Jessica U.

Yelp
Chicken tikka, chicken vindaloo, mango lassi and saag paneer were amazing. Very accommodating for gluten free and the staff is great!

Raj D.

Yelp
Ordered takeout here and was surprised by the size of the portions. We ordered a chana masala and paneer makhani with garlic naan and barely had enough room to finish it all up. The food was ready by the time we arrived to pick it up and the service was excellent. The chana masala was 5/5, but the paneer makhani was probably a 3.5. The prices were a little high, but the restaurant offers a pretty nice discount for college students in the area!

Anthea L.

Yelp
super yummy i love the mutter paneer it is so delbicious staff is nice the mango lassi is so good too come here

Meri E.

Yelp
If I could afford to eat food from this place for every meal I would. Unparalleled taste.

Jean-Luc F.

Yelp
The food was ok. My reasoning for giving them two stars: 1. I randomly ate one inside by myself and ordered. 2. I have encountered borderline discrimination (patronizing behavior would be more appropriate) there. I attribute it to ignorance. However, the young woman Hottest is very professional and civil. 3. The behavior of the other workers a suspicious. I hope they read my review, training people to be not judgemental and treat everyone graciously regardless of their ethnic background. It's the right way to behave. 4. Most people from India are kind and welcoming.

Lenore G.

Yelp
I've always been a fan of exceptional Indian food, so I was delighted to discover Mt. Everest Restaurant! The venue is fairly basic, with the focus more on the food than the ambiance - that suits me just fine :-) Service is fast, friendly, and efficient - what they do best here is the cuisine! All the breads, curries, and Tandoori I've tried to date have been excellent. They've got a nice (though not unusual) selection of traditional dishes, with some Nepali dishes as well for people who are willing to take a walk on the culinary wild side ;-) We've visited here several times and haven't found anything yet that isn't delicious! Some of our go to favorites are the Tandoori chicken (which is wonderfully succulent) and their amazing Chicken Jalfrezi. The prices here aren't low, but they're spot-on given the exceptional quality of the food served. Highly recommended!!

Jake C.

Yelp
Service was great, food was even better. I was surprised the restaurant was empty when we got there. Food came out efficiently, and they applied the Northwestern student discount without us asking. Totally would recommend.

Patrick S.

Yelp
We are vegan and have had no trouble finding good tasting entrees at other Indian restaurants, but here the only dishes that were vegan were just bland and boring. We tried going a handful of times and each time asking if a different dish could be made vegan but were just met with resistance each time. It seems that the cook in the kitchen runs this place and is too lazy to make anything other than the routine menu. People that worked there did not even know who the owner was. No wonder this place is always near empty.

Devin M.

Yelp
This used to be a great restaurant. The food used to be so full spice and flavor. But unfortunately something happened and the food is bland and leaves much to be desired. I recently got the daal saag, and it had no flavor. Like none. It was as if they had simply simmered lentils and spinach and called it good. What is particularly baffling is the waitress asked how spicy I wanted it and I said "spicy". I don't know what's happened to this place, but it just isn't good anymore.

F G.

Yelp
I enjoyed the food. They had a special tandoori chicken dish. That was really fun and delicious. I really recommend this place if you're into Indian food.

Monica D.

Yelp
~Monica's T.A.S.T.E. Test~ Taste: I had the vegetarian sampler which came with tastes of 4 main dishes, naan, a milky desert, rice, and fried dessert balls. I loved the 4 mains (which consisted of 1 pea, 1 cauliflower, 1 beans/lentils, and 1 spinach/paneer dish) and naan. All had excellent depth and paired well together. The desserts I didn't love but that was more personal preference as they were cooked well. Atmosphere: The inside of the restaurant is very welcoming. I liked how the dishes were served to your table right before the food warm, as most dishes are served family style so there was no change in temperature when transferring food to your plate. Service: Our wait staff was very attentive and friendly, and explained the menu well. Tab: For 2 of us after tip it came out to $46, with a Northwestern student discount. I think they have a lunch buffet that is cheaper and you can try all the food, so that may be a more effective use of dollars. Extra wow factor: I liked how each dish had a distinct flavor, which has not been the case in my past experience with Indian food. Great job! Does it pass the T.A.S.T.E test? We will definitely be back when we are craving the flavors of Mt Everest!

Angel C.

Yelp
Wonderful food and service! We went for lunch and had the chance to try their buffet! It was a different experience but nonetheless the food was seasoned and hot and everything we expected! Can't wait to go back!

Yelp
Love the rich flavor of Boti Kabab Masala. They put many herbs in the rice which makes it quite appetizing. Definitely beats other Indian restaurants I went to before.

Andrea M.

Yelp
I enjoyed everything that we ordered - chicken momo, samosas, aloo gobi, baigan bartha (eggplant , a favorite dish of mine in general), chicken tikka masala, and lamb curry. The dishes were all mild, which is perfect for me, but many Indian food enthusiasts would probably find it to be not spicy enough - there are spicier dishes on the menu though. The breads were delicious, and I absolutely loved the piyazi kulcha (bread filled with onions). Sometimes I make my own curry, and I'd definitely want to swing by Mt Everest to pick up some naan or other breads. The price point is typical for Evanston. My one gripe is that the online ordering system automatically added an extra dollar to my tip when I pressed the "submit" button. It was just a dollar, but I didn't like the way it was randomly added. I dunno if this is supposed to be part of an online ordering fee or something.

Nathan D.

Yelp
Warm Plates | Diversity | Naan Warm Plates: For the first time in a long time a restaurant did something that I've never seen before in a positive direction ... For the first time in my life, I received a warm plate 2 minutes before my main dish came out. While on the surface this seems small, it was kinda big! It definitely kept the dish warmer and gave the meal (especially the rice) more flavor. Diversity: The menu has a lot of options. I had the curry chicken with rice which was delicious. The flavor of the curry was thick but extremely savory and went REALLY well with the rice. Looking around the restaurant, I did not see any dish repeat, so it appears everything they have is good. Naan: One of the other highlights was the Naan. It had a sweeter dough than normal that had a bit of pepper flavoring. It was delicious and came out as an appetizer for us. Pro Tip: 10% Northwestern Discount

F H.

Yelp
Yummy Indian food!!! We had the sag paneer and curry chicken and a generous portion of papadum. I have to give a shout out to Emmy, the hostess, who does far more than greet and seat ppl. She is genuinely sunshine and so welcoming. She was a bright and welcomed addition at the end of a long day. Thanks, Emmy!

Jennifer M.

Yelp
We thoroughly enjoyed our meals and the service was excellent. The sauces on the appetizers and meals were delicious and we ordered thirds of the garlic naan. Will always make sure to stop here when we visit Evanston.

Zachary M.

Yelp
Probably the worst Indian food I've had. Got flashbacks to having COVID not being able to taste anything.

Ali C.

Yelp
Service was really quite outstanding - we sat down and our orders were taken immediately. We started with the naan which was delicious and fresh. She served it within minutes of our order. From there it went downhill. We were the first to be seated for dinner, yet we had to wait for 35 minutes for the entrees. The chicken shiskabob did not look nor taste like chicken at all - it was processed and tasted like some sort of sausage. The navratan korma was average and alright. The Himalayan Hunting mixed grill was good, but after waiting for so long, we were too frustrated to enjoy it.

Jill H.

Yelp
Second visit (4 years later), but this time, I wasn't wowed or blown away by the food. Daughter and I were hungry from travel and ready for a delicious Indian lunch. The buffet offerings the day of our visit just weren't awesome, in fact most of it was seriously lacking in flavor. One dish had some heat, but still lacked in flavorful spices. I also had a quick sample of one of the dessert options. The dessert labels listed kheer as an option along with "sewai" with vermicelli in it. The choice labeled "kheer" was not kheer like I'd ever seen. It was some sort of fruit salad type dessert. I tried the sewai and found it highly unsatisfying. A bite was enough. It was watery and not calorie-worthy. I would've loved a wonderful gajar ka (carrot) halwa or a bowl of actual kheer. The service was fine. We were greeted and welcomed, served water and naan, etc, so that was a plus. Ambiance was good. The noise level is quiet enough for easy conversation. But considering the unexciting food, I couldn't justify the high cost of this buffet lunch. ($28.50 for two, before :-/

Dan H.

Yelp
Always love Mt. Everest Restaurant. The food is early and hot and delicious. The delivery pepole are courteous. I have tried many things from Mt. Everest and have never been disappointed. The only complaint I have is from many months ago we were dining in and order some lamb dishes and they were out of lamb. Their lamb dishes are so good they ran out food.

Zhyldyz S.

Yelp
Food tastes amazing in here! Definitely favorite Indian restaurant of ours! Definitely coming back!

Gus M.

Yelp
The shrimps are so good even your picky kid will try it. In fact this picky kid tried everything... loved the naan and the veggies that came with the chicken tandoori. He's experimenting with being a vegetarian of some sort//what better place to try than Mt Everest!

Shruti S.

Yelp
I have always been a regular when living in Chicago but my move to suburb made dining in Mt. Everest rare . After COVID and all things , I visited the restaurant after 2 years. I knew the restaurant was following some COVID precaution but didn't realize how worst my experience would be.starting from the ambiance to menu to food to dessert it just disappointed me so much. Instead of a restaurant I felt like I was in a bbq in a beach where food is served in paper plates. COVID has hit everyone badly but after CDC saying it is safe the restaurant still serves in a paper plate. Food was brought in plastic container. It was just worst experience.

Emily H.

Yelp
I always let the staff give recommendations and they've always given me great suggestions. Precovid I ate in the restaurant twice and had great experiences. I've had take out twice recently. I've really enjoyed everything I've had. One day the man on the phone told me that their rice pudding is as good as his mom's. I ordered it and it was delicious. I'm excited to make my way through the rest of the menu.

Kirsten F.

Yelp
Absolutely delicious. The staff are sweet and attentive. Highly recommend the momos! 100% recommend.

Nikki O.

Yelp
This is the first time I ordered from this restaurant. I got aloo gobi and pea pilau rice for pickup. I only specified for them to go easy on the oil/ghee. The food was ready before the end of the estimated time (on a Saturday around 6 pm), and it was delicious. I selected medium spice level for the aloo gobi (potato, cauliflower, ginger, tomato dish), and it had just the right amount of kick. Very tasty, no excessive oiliness. Will definitely order again.

Tad T.

Yelp
Lots of kids. The paintings are good. Sometimes actually all the time, here, if you want to use the bathroom you have to go a floor below. One time the Mrs went down there and she was gone so long just commuting to the place that when she g

Luke S.

Yelp
The food here is to die for. I typically only have Indian 2-3 times a year and it's almost always here. The butter chicken Is so addictive. The have a daily lunch buffet, that will run you $11.95. With that you get a really solid selection and you can try a ton of times off their normal menu. It's how I learned what I like and don't like. Their servers are always kind and their owner Rama is a stand up guy! This place has been here long before the boom of new restaurant in town, so be sure to support the local business.

Brutally Honest G.

Yelp
Service was good, however the food was overpriced and not authentic. I had the chicken tikka masala and it was basically unseasoned tomato soup with chicken in it.

Lisa K.

Yelp
One of our dishes was spoiled. The navratna korma had gone bad. We told the waiter and they made a new one which took a while and wasted time. The chana masala and paneer makhani were good but nothing special. We had a nan, roti and mint paratha they were good but not like other restaurants. The wait staff was nice. There is paid street parking. The restaurant is roomy with lots of seating and decorated nicely. It is pricey.

Han Teng W.

Yelp
I was craving some curry so I decided to give this place a try after an Indian friend recommended it. I got the vegetarian thali and a mango lassi. The mango lassi was surprisingly good and didn't look radioactive nor taste like diabetes in a cup. I was mildly surprised at how not sweet it was. However the let down came with the chutneys. They all tasted kinda weird but I couldn't put my finger to it. The only one that taste normal was probably the green chutney. I avoided the other 2 almost completely. The thali itself was a good portion and satisfying. The daal curry was a little too thick and felt a little flat but everything else was great. The dessert (which is like a ferment rice dessert which I can never remember the name of) was again surprisingly not too sweet and I almost finished it. Service was nice and prompt. The only thing that was strange to me was how they chose to fill tables inside the restaurant first so I had to weaved in and out a little to get to my table. Otherwise the friendly service was great. My server even offered to get me more naan bread! Also all drinks are half off on Thursday.

Sarah G.

Yelp
i ordered mutter paneer. it consisted of a few pieces of cheese, a few peas, and mostly sauce, which was absolutely tasteless. (Way overpriced - $19 for a lot of nothing. ) I've ordered this dish in a number of Indian restaurants and this was the most disappointing. I had an appetizer - samosas - which came stale, not crisp, like they'd been sitting around for hours - and asked them to take them back. They gave me new ones which were fresher but basically mushy & tasteless. I will not be returning to this restaurant.

Nate V.

Yelp
It used to be our favorite Indian food. It changed for the worse. Went a couple weeks ago and used to love but found a baby roach on our table! Gross!

Fakhruddin A.

Yelp
We have been going to this restaurant since it opened a long time ago even though it kept becoming progressively more expensive. However the taste of the food has progressively deteriorated and 4 days ago we has the most tasteless food experience, I had Chicken Makhani, black dal makhani and saag paneer, our usual favourites. It cost 73 dollars! I was taken aback by the bill when i picked up the food. But then when we sat down to eat the food at our special dinner it was so tasteless that we stopped eating it. Even the nans tasted old, chicken had no chicken taste ,as if it was recycled from the previous day. It is not in my character to be insulting so i called the restaurant to inform them about our disappointment and that I was calling to alert them that something was seriously wrong in the kitchen. I am an Indian and i hate to see my favourite hometown Indian restaurant deteriorate. I post this to encourage other patrons to alert the owners about this issue if they experience the same as us. We have a tendency to silently walk away rather than complain for constructive purposes.

Jeanne-Marie D.

Yelp
I have returned to this place a handful of times. It's some of the best Indian food I've ever had. Everything is so fresh and so is the naan. Typically the dishes range in prices of $13-$16 for their most popular foods. But it's worth it because I'm never able to finish everything in one sitting. So I usually get a second meal when I take it home. I usually get a lamb or chicken dish, like the gosht pasanda or curry chicken. There's only a slight hint of spiciness to it, so it's not overpowering. The wait-staff is very kind and helpful. It can get busy on certain nights, typically starting Thursday-Saturday, so it's not a bad idea to make a reservation.

Jennifer S.

Yelp
The boyfriend and I were collectively sick of our home cooking and made an impromptu decision to stop by this spot on the way home. What a great call. We ordered the VALUE MEAL FOR NON-VEGETARIANS FOR TWO. Despite the funny name, it was a great choice. It came with: -Naan -Lamb stew of some kind -Fresh yogurt -Pea and paneer curry -Tandoori chicken -Rice with veggies -Rice pudding PRO-TIP 1: put the yogurt on the lamb. Made it much more tender and luxurious! PRO-TIP 2: 10% discount with Northwestern ID Can't wait to go back and try the Nepalese cuisine!

April C.

Yelp
We went on a Saturday night and while it was pretty busy in the restaurant we were still able to be seated immediately. After being seated, however, we waited a very long time to get our orders taken. I understand that the restaurant was busy, but considering the fact that taking someone's order is a fairly quick process, I was surprised that no-one came earlier, and it was also very hard to flag anyone down. We ordered the garlic naan, chicken tikki masala, and lamb curry. The naan came with 4 pieces and was absolutely delicious, I'd definitely get it again. As for the chicken and lamb I found the meat to be very dry and though the sauce was pretty good. I was also a bit surprised that even with the high prices of their menu items, you still have to order rice to go with them unless you get one of their bigger, more expensive dishes. The food came in small containers but was actually very filling with the rice and I was able to eat it for another meal. I think the quality isn't up to par for what you're paying and that they could have better service. They did, however, pack us an extra serving of rice in our to-go bag , which was a nice touch.

Richard R.

Yelp
Genuinely awful food. I've been going to Indian restaurants for 40 years, and I believe this is the worst we ever had. We went for lunch on Mother's Day. It was a major disappointment and embarrassment since I recommended it to my son. In brief, all of the food felt dry, cold and pre-cooked with gobs of canned sauces thrown on top of it to hide the stale nature of the food. Without exaggeration, the packaged food from Whole Foods and Trader Joe's tastes fresher and better. The waiter knew we wanted very mild tastes, but didn't warn us that one of the dishes had a spicy premade sauce. There is very little to say that was positive about our experience. All the dishes were without differences. Similar to some ethnic takeouts. Some vegetables and meat, cooked in the same way, with a different sauce. We used to go to this restaurant on a regular basis, but I doubt we'll go again. What a shame. So few good restaurants left in downtown Evanston thanks to the dystopian iron rule of the city government. Joy Yee retains authentic ethnic flavors. Otherwise, the former spirit of the downtown area has been crushed and replaced with medical facilities. A memorial to what was and what is.

Christina B.

Yelp
I have some mixed feelings about this restaurant. I've only ever gotten take out so I can't say much about the service. Everything I've had from here is delicious. My favorite might be the chili chicken, it is soooo spicy. You're gonna need a box of tissues when you eat it. The garlic naan is very good. Recently I tried the chana masala (chick peas) and Dum aloo (sweet potato). It comes with white basamati rice. While the food is good, it's way too expensive. It's nice having the restaurant close by and convenience is the only reason I keep coming back. I know they have a lunch buffet during the week, I plan to try that in the future. You're better off driving down to little India and getting the same quality food for cheaper.
