"Portland is home to several beautifully manicured city parks—but what’s really unique about Mt. Tabor is that it’s situated on top of a volcanic vent (don’t worry, it’s dormant). Taking up close to 200 acres, the native plant-rich grounds are outfitted with hiking trails, picnic areas, playgrounds, tennis courts, and two surprisingly serene reservoirs, all in pleasantly close proximity to each other. As you explore, keep an eye out for scenic overlooks offering uninterrupted views of Mount Hood and downtown scattered throughout the park. Photo: Norm Clark"

Cute place to picnic area in Portland. Young kids play in play grounds and eat some snacks.! Relax, clam and chilled place for family.

Google
Clean restrooms, shady play area for kids, big trees. Need I say more?

Yelp
What is not to like about this park. From sunset views, to events such as the soap box derby. This park is clean, well maintained, and beautiful. Parking can be a challenge, but there's many places to park around the park.

Yelp
Beautiful park with plenty of shady greenery on a hot day and lovely views of Mt. Jefferson from afar. This is what I wanted to see during my visit to Portland for the first time, but without actually having to drive all way to Mt. Jefferson. The snowy mountain was breathtaking in the distance and it was lovely to see it contrast with Portland's greenery in the summer/month of June.

Yelp
Stop #9 on "The One Day Adventure in Portland" What this is: - A place to casually hike, or trail run - A place to ride one's bike, or rollerblade, or skateboard - A place to jog, run, or walk fast - A place to picnic - A place to sit on a comfy bench and maybe get a view of downtown Portland - A place to lay on soft grass and sunbathe - A place to lay under large trees and take a nap - A place to go to the bathroom - A place with ample space for many to enjoy! What this isn't: - A place with water (at least I didn't see any water) - A place for a loud and obnoxious party - A place to ride a Lime Scooter (seriously, they shut down and will not work in the park) It's a place where everyone seemed relaxed and happy. I was relaxed and happy. It was a wonderful way to spend an afternoon.

Yelp
What a great park on top of a volcano! The visitor center has some information about the area. When I lived in the area, I know there were shows and gatherings here. There is lots of space to walk around and play. The park is quite large and beautiful. I would recommend bringing a meal and picnic here if you are nearby.

Yelp
Very cute park. Great nature beauty with a lot of tall trees and good views. There are many steps to take to go all the way up and have a great look at the city. Used to be a volcano now a public park, one of the most loved local parks.

Lisa B.

Yelp
It was so beautiful and and nice , the only disheartening part was the picnic tables were full of graffiti. We brought a small Bbq and made a really nice dinner, met a lovely lady that walked the park with her dog and he was sure loving rib steak bones to take home !!
google avatar

Yelp
There's always a crowd but the park is pretty big so I wouldn't say that it's annoying at all. The views are great but also the trees are so green and beautiful. Every time we're in the area we go there and enjoy the nature!
google avatar

Yelp
I love walking outside and checking out nature trails, whenever I can. Mount Tabor is a beautiful spot in Portland and a nice place to enjoy a nature walk. Even though Portland is home to more than 200 delightful parks of all sizes and styles -- only one is built atop a volcano. In fact, Portland is one of six American cities with an extinct volcano within its limits, thanks to the 636-foot-tall Mount Tabor. Named after an Israeli peak of the same name, Portland's Mount Tabor became a city park in 1909 and it includes several walking trails, gently curving roads, long flights of stairs, and plenty of space to showcase native plants. Beautiful views of the city and Mount Hood from here.

Yelp
Pretty park, decent views, lots of walking trails, and there's a recreation portion too! I wouldn't say that this park has the *best* views of the Portland skyline, though. I'll give that title to Rocky Butte instead.

Yelp
We love love LOVE this park. Offers different trails flat to some short and steep. Good views and open to more forest feel so come sunshine or rain and you can choose your way to walk, hike or prancercise(is that even a thing?). Bikes on the roads, dogs mainly on leash there is a dog park on the east rear that's off leash. I recommend parking near the garden on the west side and walking up. We drive here some 17 mins away. Good coffee in the hood and Belmont has a number of food spots.

Yelp
Wow yall!!! Amazing leisurely walk with beautiful trails and amazing scenery!!! Definitely a must and I believe one of my new favorite weekly walking spots!! Be sure to bundle up cause it does get cold and breezy but super fun relaxing and absolutely beautiful!!

Yelp
Very beautiful park . Def wear your good gripping sneakers . It's really pretty we didn't stay long but it was lovely

Yelp
If I was a local, I would definitely go, but coming from out of town, I don't think it was worth going. It's a peaceful place away from the city, but the scenery didn't stand out too much.

Gina E.

Yelp
Great place for a hike. Like most of Portland, it's unkept & filthy, NO bathrooms as stated, given the very few there are ALWAYS closed.
google avatar

Martina C.

Yelp
Tall shady trees, green everywhere, solace. Quiet. It is pretty clean as far as our big parks go. Lots of space to run, walk, hike, have your dog with you. Swings for kids. Portland beauty and views. It has it's fair share of graffiti and the restrooms could use some attention, spider web cleaning and general cleaning. It isn't my favorite FALL season park just because I prefer foliage to evergreens in the fall but in the summer it's a great heat respite as it gets GREAT shade.

Yelp
What a gorgeous park this is. Though, I always pick the wrong days, weather to explore I had a blast exploring this gorgeous park. I don't know how many acres this park had but it is humongous.. now, when I explored this park it was mixed with rain and sun.. this is a great park with lots of walking/hiking trails.. what I noticed about the parks in Portland is that the trails keeps going and going . Just when you think you've finished, there's always a small trails that leads you down or up to more trails.. Portland is a great city if you want to get away from the city life and be surrounded by nature.

Yelp
Mount Tabor Park is situated on a high spot in Portland's east side. When you ascend it, you'll be rewarded with fabulous views in all directions, and (the pièce de ré·sis·tance) completely unobstructed views of Mount Hood. There are roads that wind through the park which provide a plethora of opportunities to stop, enjoy the park, and take in some of the wonderful scenery :-) Reaching Mount Tabor from downtown requires that you cross the Hawthorne Bridge, then continue due East on Hawthorne Boulevard.

Yelp
A great park for a stroll or a serious uphill hike. The park is also bike friendly with many paved paths. There's historical markers along the way that tell more about the park and it's uses over the years. I was fascinated to learn it is an old volcanic cinder cone. It's also a great spot for photography buffs, providing excellent views.

Yelp
This is a popular park in a densely populated area, so expect it to be busy. We tried coming here a few times and couldn't find parking, but finally lucked out to park and visit on a clear morning in mid-November. They have some nice views of the city & mountains on clear days. There are paved walking paths and some dirt trails, and since this is what's left of a long-extinct volcano some of the inclines offer quite a workout. They also have a basketball court, tennis court, some picnic tables & picnic shelter, and restrooms. Despite it being a chilly November morning, it was still very busy and sadly a lot of the visitors were completely oblivious to others around them and were either walking into people, or zooming by on bikes entirely too close and without verbal warning alerting they were passing by, or listening to music loudly on speakers. With so many other fantastic parks around Portland, I personally wouldn't come back to this one unless I lived nearby.
google avatar

Candy C.

Yelp
The park is a quick 30 minutes/ 5 miles Uber ride from the river park area. It's fairly easy 1.5 to 2 miles hike with a lot of trees to provide good shade, so it's not too hot for a summer time hiking. The trail is flat enough for kids & elderly to join as well. There are some stairs and small hills to keep the hike interesting. Lots of joggers and plenty of families and little kids. The reason we chose this hiking trail is because it has a very clear view of the Mt. Hood which is the Mt. Fuji of Portland. Afterwords we walked a mile or so back towards the city on Belmont and grabbed brunch.

Yelp
I have been in Oregon for 42 years and never been here but went today with a group for a little outdoor exercise. Oregon weather at its finest. Pretty views from some parts. I parked below off street and walked the stairs up.

Yelp
What an incredible place to enjoy the view, take a hike, ride your bike, or have a picnic. There are many people here but you don't notice, because it's so huge a space. You can see beautiful fall colors. You can admire the cherry tree blossoms in spring. I've seen people catching rays in the summer. You can pick your path or trail. Some are paved and some are hard pack. You'll fall in love with Portland all over again when you see the city view. I put in the intersection of SE Yamhill and SE 69th Ave. on Google maps. At the sign, you can go right or left. I like left except on Wednesdays when the park is closed to vehicles. On Wednesdays, you go right, park along the street, and walk into the gate straight ahead.

Yelp
What is not to love about having an extinct volcano in your backyard backyard. This is way cooler than having some boring central park. You have amazing views of the city and distant, not so dormant volcanoes. I personally love coming during the morning and sunset. Thew ay the light filters through the trees is really quite magical. Listening to that sweet zephyr speed through the leaves is a moment I wont soon forget. This is a must visit for all.

Yelp
This is such a beautiful and magical area to explore. The trails were well maintained and easy to do with my school-age kids, the playground thrilled them, and the views are lovely. We got confused about which trail was which (despite generally being good with maps), but it's a gorgeous place to get lost in, so we really didn't mind. We happened to come on a Wednesday, which meant the park was completely closed to traffic, and the extra peace and seclusion was really nice, and we even got to watch an owl. This was my favorite spot within Portland itself during our trip.

Yelp
Every week, in 2020, my husband tried to go visit/walk the neighborhood park. I've walked to Mt. Tabor from Franklin High School on my last senior day of school in the 70's. Then walked home, on 28th NE Flanders St. My neighbor across the street, took me up here on his turquoise 750 motorcycle, and went down those so fast, I was like in a roller coaster! I thought I was gonna die! That was my first time in a cycle. He did die riding his motorcycle, I learned about it, years later! :( Anyway, we visited here on July 5th. My husband and I brought our lunch and we picnicked on a table in a picnic covered area. If I remember well, the day was pleasant, it was relaxing and enjoyable! We walked over to the stairs (we skipped the volcano) and had a nice view of the City of Portland, & my old school. For someone who hardly ever walks, with vertigo that comes with being over 60+, this was a total workout for me! A new addition, a larger than life statue of Harvey Scott, the editor of the Oregonian. The bronze statue was created by the same guy best known for sculpting Mt. Rushmore, Gutzon Borglum.

Yelp
Serene and easy to get to from Kaiser hospitals. I go here for post work runs/walks. The walking paths are well kept. Great for families. Peaceful. If you are looking for a quick place away from this city this is a great location.

Yelp
Great park in the City limits for hiking, running, tennis, basketball, picnics (w/no fires or grills). It seriously took us only 7 minutes from SE neighborhood to get here, and we hiked up to the top for a great workout and even better views! Very clean park, lots of places to put down a blanket and get your read on or have a picnic. Lots of people running, hiking, doing walk clubs, and just enjoying nature. Top notch park!

Yelp
I have visited this place since I was a little kid. Yesterday was my daughter's first visit. It is an excellent location for hikes, runs, and bicycling. The "Mt. Tabor stairs" will give you a nice workout. I tend to start at the reservoirs below and then work my way up. You can also drive up the mountain where there are picnic areas and play structures for children. If you arrive here around noon to afternoon on a sunny day, the sun hits the water reservoirs perfectly for an aqua, sapphire blue. In the summer I recommend applying some bug spray to avoid bites. Very well shaded so short sleeves and shorts are okay.

Yelp
This has always been a go to park to bring out of town visitors to. With the pandemic, I haven't been in a long time, until today. I took my almost 4 year old and infant to walk to the top and play on the playground. Both were a hit. My daughter loves volcanos, and she was excited to be standing on top of one. She was also delighted to have a view of downtown and the hospital. But the real star of the day was the big playground. For me, there's enough to do at this park to make it worth driving to get there.

Yelp
Came here for the soapbox derby, and it was a pretty dope event. Going up to watch the cars race involved a little bit of a mini hike. Would totally hike up sometime to watch the sunrise/sunset because there's a nice view of the city at the top.
google avatar

John K.

Yelp
One of the best inadvertent decisions I ever made was to find myself living within walking distance of this park. The reservoirs are perfect for easy strolling and the hillsides and stairs will get your heart pumping if that's what you're looking for. Climbing will also yield increasingly spectacular views. The road that goes up the east side of Mt Tabor has a couple of breaks in the trees with one of my favorite views of Mt Hood (about 50 miles away) from anywhere in Portland. Some of the sidewalks and trails get narrower the higher you go, so social distancing can be an issue when you encounter visitors without masks. In more normal times, the adult soapbox derby is a wonderful spectator sport.

Takako S.

Yelp
This is a little away from my neighborhood. But this park gives me a nice good walk and dog friendly, some tennis courts. It was a little late afternoon in mid October, perfect weather and everyone was sit on the ground facing to the same direction, look over the reservoir. I realized the sun started going down and witnessed a beautiful sunset! Can be a romantic date spot? Or just hanging out with your friends, family or dogs. I will come back here when the weather gets better.

Yelp
Honestly what else could you ask for an a in a park - it's beautiful. It's got flowers. It has grass. It's got friendly dogs. It's got wonderful views. It makes me happy.

Yelp
This is such a beautiful park. I love walking or biking past the reservoirs and letting my kids play at the park. Views are top notch.
google avatar

Chris H.

Yelp
Really splendid beauty and abundant trails, wonderful views and a good workout all around! However rampant graffiti and trash strewn about--trouble makers being loud--billowing clouds of pot smoke everywhere at the top and people blasting their Bluetooth speakers. the riff raff completely took away from the splendor - sad
google avatar

Melodie L.

Yelp
First timer at mount tabor. Came across this park looking online for a nearby place to hike and do some light weight outdoor cardio - Gorgeous scenery of the city - the blue trails will take you up and down hills so you will get a good balance of down and uphill cardio. The signs are not very visible so having the trail map on your phone will help. Good cell service so you can stream your music. Watch out for poop on the trails - some will look like small pine cones but they sure are not! Great place to walk jog hike run or bike!
google avatar

Yelp
Coming to Mt Tabor makes me very happy. Though the reservoirs days are well past numbered, the getaway from the hustle not far away is like a fantasy to abide. I love walking through and up to the peak-- love the view of the long artery as I look west toward the river. It's a comfort to come, and I simply love all of its nook and crannies. Staid views and private corners of peace. A gem of an already gem of a city.

Yelp
I visit this park primarily for quality trail time with my dog. I see a lot of runners and bicyclists, as well as folks using the stairs to get a workout. It's a great urban park, city views in every direction. You can get an invigorating 3-4 mile hike here if you do some up and down and switching back on the trails. It takes a very short amount of time to just head for the top, but if you meander and take ever side trail available, you'll be rewarded with views, birds, trees, and lots of squirrels. Down on one side is a really good fenced dog park. I seldom see problems here, there is water and hilly terrain. The rest of the park is strictly on leash, and we try to be good neighbors so we mostly adhere to that. But sometimes .... in the wee hours before the sun comes up and mist is still hanging on the streetlamps .... Gus and I pretend we are secret agents in Vichy France escaping toward the border! Cant have leashes when you're on a mission!! Run, girl! I love chasing her thru the wet grass, over slight rises and down narrow dirt trails. Will we be captured or will we escape with the secret code? We'll be telling the story over coffee and biscuits, and planning our next mission.

Yelp
I had no idea this park existed until last weekend when some friends wanted to meet up here for a spot of lunch and great conversation. There are so many areas to explore - even if you just hang out by the reservoir taking in the beautiful views of downtown Portland and the reservoir itself. The area seems super dog friendly and there is a great deal of parking throughout the whole park. The park is cared for very well too - I did not see even a spot of trash and the restrooms were very clean as well even with the large number of people who clearly use this whole space. We were able to acquire a great table pretty quickly and had such a great afternoon just taking in the space. There are many paths and trails to explore and hike through. Make a day of it!

Yelp
This has to be one of my favorite places in the city . Such a serene , calming spot , that can definitely lifts your spirits on a dreary day. There is so much to do here for all kinds of folks - hiking , running , skateboarding , cycling ,play ground, Picnics or just enjoying the views .This place has something for everyone. The reservoirs are beautiful on a sunny day , when the blue looks even more radiant . The park gives a great view of the city and is majestic during sunsets and sunrises. There are multiple trails for hiking and running .The stairs are a tricky terrain , since they are very narrow and on a crowded day you might have to wait a little bit to get across especially with covid. The park is dog friendly and there are designated areas , where you can let your furry friends off-leash. Multiple parking spots can be found across the park. This beautiful place is one of the many reasons I absolutely love this city .

Yelp
Gorgeous!! Plenty of doggies zooming around in the dog park, lots of trails and vistas, not teeming with hobos. Pretty killer.

Yelp
I was surprised at how huge the park was in the middle of the city! It's really a great place to forget you're in the city and just relax and enjoy nature. There's a huge hill that you can hike up along with a set of stairs that totally left me breathless. There was a playground, pull up bars, and different trails. I didn't get to cover all of it, but it seems like a really nice place to work out or just hang out. Overall a great escape!

Yelp
A perfect park for an uphill walk. Too bad we had to play "dodge" with fellow walkers. We parked on the street and teversed the circumference ending at a statute. It is great Portland has many beautiful parks, likely one of the many reasons people love the City. Wear a mask, social distance, and stay safe.
google avatar

Randy D.

Yelp
The park's a dormant volcano. There's an amphitheater stage in the cone. I had the pleasure of playin it with Jenny & Bertha (cranked to 11) plus coworkers back around y2k on a couple occasions via company summer picnics. Those Godly acoustics.... Arguably my Best. Moments. Ever.
google avatar

Yelp
Super fun playground for younger kids. Beautiful trails to go on and can always see friendly faces and animals around.

Yelp
What a large and beautiful park right in the middle of the city! I can see why it's a local favorite. This park was only a mile or two away from where we were staying so we decided to take an afternoon hike during our visit. It was super cold when we went, which I loved because I don't like hiking in warm weather. There are three trails in the varying in difficulty, distance, and views. The red is the easiest and shortest, green is the moderate trail with mountain views, and the blue is the most arduous with lots of steps. The hike was absolutely beautiful, but the park was hard to navigate. There are not really signs anywhere and you have to constantly rely on the map if you've never been here before. We were hiking in the wrong way and we didn't even know! Thankfully we found our way back and was able to enjoy the rest of the park. It's a very peaceful and tranquil environment and I would love to go here again.

Yelp
What "can't" you do here. It's like a gateway mountain for the active community and thrill seekers alike. So....here is a list of random verbs to get your heart rate moving; running, biking, carting, walking, bird watching, strolling, hiking, camping, reading, gazing, love making, kissing, playing, picnicking, geocaching, meeting, sledding, dog walking, exploring, drinking, eating, concert going, basketball, frisbee playing, getting lost, rock hunting, skate boarding, game playing, etc......But.... There is just one thing that is definitely forbidden: Just don't piss in the reservoir!!
google avatar

Daisy M.

Yelp
Mt Tabor Park is flat-out wonderful. I was thinking about dropping one star because of recent issues related to burned out cars and graffiti, but that would make no sense. Someday maybe vandalism will be a thing of the past, one can hope! No, the park itself deserves 5 stars because it is without parallel. I love everything about it. The reservoirs, the views, the dog park (even though I don't own a dog), the York statue, the playground, the street lights, the grassy fields and especially the magnificent trees.
google avatar

Frances L.

Yelp
Beautiful Park in the city, when your on it it's hard to imagine your in the middle of a bustling city, the different paths give access to many different options, you'll only walk the same way twice if that's your plan. The views of the city are outstanding. It's hard to believe it's a dormant cider cone until you reach the top and it's Mother Mt comes into full view, definitely one of my favorite parks in PDX for city hiking and picnics. It has plenty of stuff to do from the tennis, basketball and play courts to the playground and many trails you could easily spend the whole day here and not be bored. Bring water although they have fountains sporadically at the top down below the reservoir there are none to be found. The bathrooms should be replaced with the Portland Loo Bathrooms they put in at Cully Park these are not very well lit or clean.
