I enjoyed my visit to MTR 1924, a legendary South Indian vegetarian restaurant that traces its roots back to the original Mavalli Tiffin Rooms in Bangalore, founded in 1924. The history of the place is nicely reflected in the ambience, with photos and stories lining the walls and giving the restaurant real character.
I tried the weekend-only special mini meal, and it was genuinely delicious — a well-balanced selection of vegetable dishes and a sweet, served with a choice of dosa or poori. It felt comforting, traditional, and thoughtfully prepared. The menu also offers a wide variety of dosas, which I’m keen to explore on my next visit.
The masala tea was decent, though milder than I expected in terms of spice. Service was friendly and efficient, and prices felt very reasonable for the quality.
It’s easy to see why MTR 1924 has been recognised in the MICHELIN Guide with a Bib Gourmand, an award given for good food at great value — a well-deserved nod to its consistency and heritage.
