Mu Review - Dalston - London - The Infatuation

"Nothing says Friday night in Dalston like a plate of sashimi and a little session on the bongos. At least not at Mu, anyway. How you experience this Japanese fusion jazz bar can depend on where you sit in its cavernous bunker-ish space. The wide rectangular bar is lit by orbs and far enough away from the stage for canoodling dates to hear each other over blaring renditions of Buena Vista Social Club, while the dining room is a mix of dimly lit tables and lively banquettes. Some are close enough for you to feed the pianist the perfectly decent tonkatsu, others are far enough away for you to speak normally and hail down a server in peace. On weekends Mu is heaving and given the well-made martinis, we’re not surprised. But for music-lovers, the music (and food) may be more enjoyable on a weeknight. photo credit: Dan Preston photo credit: Charlie McKay" - Jake Missing

A short version of the dinner would be, decent food, good vibe and friendly staff at a slightly overpriced price tag. Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed the food and everything was well cooked but for a place that prides to be fusion, the creativity and distinctiviness wasn't there. Service was amazing, all staff very attentive. Atmosphere was great, perhaps the live music was a bit too loud for my taste, but that's very personal. Overall is a great place for a one off date night if you have deep pockets.

Amazing atmosphere for this restaurant. The music was live and ambient. The staff were attentive and knowledgeable in the products and the food was excellent and above usual “bar” standards. Drinks came quick but food took quite a while. Food prices are quite high but not above the quality. Book in advance and aim for 7:30 or 9pm as this is when the music shows start

Great place with great atmosphere! We had a lovely night, with great food. Some of the staff were lovely, some of the staff were a little bit Rude. I would say one of the biggest disappointments was the live band. I booked this restaurant for the live band experience and apparently they were supposed to start at 7 so I booked a table for us at 6:45 but the band didn’t get started until 8. We had to give out table Back at 9 and and still got charged £13 for under and hour. I think they should state clearly when the band Will play and make the tables that got there earlier than 8 not have to pay the fee. That was a little disappointing. That being said, we did enjoy what we got and I would Return with friends.

A cool concept, Japanese-inspired food with live music, but unfortunately it doesn’t deliver on either. The band was great for the 20 mins we got to enjoy them, but they started late, and we were moved to the bar soon after, even though no one took our table. For the price, the food was way below expectations - honestly, I wouldn’t have it again, even for free. Here’s what we tried (and wouldn’t recommend): ❌ Salmon Tartare – Chopped salmon on crispy rice, lacked flavour, and tasted fishy (not fresh). ❌ Iberico Pork Secreto – No seasoning in the meat; chimichurri barely saved it. ❌ Black Cod – Somehow undercooked and flavourless, with quite a few bones. ⭕️ Fries – The only decent thing we ate. If you have to go, stick to fries and drinks. Otherwise, there are far better spots in London for food and live music.

Beautiful atmosphere, okay food. Lovely spot for a date night, good if you’re into wine/cocktails - not so good if you’re non alco drinker. Better to come later in the night as we came at 6 for dinner - they only started playing music closer to 7.30 Food service is quick but the food is not anything special. Certainly not something you would expect from a Japanese cuisine - lacking salt, spice… really liked the corn ribs though. Ramp stake with salsa verde was nice too. The rest.. mediocre. The waiters rushed us too much - not leaving space to enjoy the food and atmosphere. Every dish comes right after another one- no time to digest or savor. They relocated us to the bar later on. Did not feel relaxed or welcomed tbh. The atmosphere is super lovely, would come again just for drinks at the bar & to listen to some jazz. Super nice set up, decoration of the place and the placement of the jazz band. Overall, mixed experience. Would not recommend for food, especially given the prices!!!

Came here excited for a night of live music and Japanese-inspired food—failed on both. Save your time (and money). Let’s start with the food: not it. - Salmon tartar... on a hashbrown? Confusing at best. - Iberico pork? Chewy and dry, barely a drizzle of chimichurri. - Black cod? Weirdly bouncy, undercooked, and not flaking like it should—definitely **not** worth £30. - Shishito peppers? blowtorched. - The only redeeming bite? The nori fries. Now, the live music… or lack of actually enjoying it. - We booked an early table thinking we’d at least catch the first set. Wrong. Band started around 19:40 which gave us 20 minutes to enjoy the music before being kicked out of our table. - Not once, not twice, but three times staff reminded us how long we had left at our table. Why the rush? can we not enjoy the music for just a bit more till maybe the next guest show up or at least finish our drinks? - Got relocated to the bar, but from there? You can barely see the band, let alone fully enjoy the vibe. The worst part? The music was actually amazing, but we barely got to enjoy it. If they’re so eager to turn over tables, maybe rethink calling this a live music venue. TL;DR: Food isn’t worth it definitely not for the price, cocktails are forgettable, book a late table if you must go, and don’t expect a relaxed night—staff will make sure you know when your time’s up. 🚫

Appetizers, main course, side dishes, music and cocktails were fantastic. Unlike the old comments, I think food is served timely (not too fast and not too slow), and is delicious. Menu highlights: Appetizers: aubergine, popcorn shrimp, beef gyoza (we ordered all 3 of them twice because it was soooo good) Main course: I liked salmon teriyaki, it had smokiness in the taste. Would recommend it. We went for the turbot (yes its august and its not turbot season), but still it was delicious. As a side dish, oyster mushrooms were really really good. But ofc, we ordered rice and nori fries which complemented well with the fish. Cocktails: soju spiritz, toki and one more that I cant remember the name. All of them were delicately prepared. Balanced taste. Wine menu: we ordered 2 bottles of white wine. One was chenin blanc, fantastic. They have orange wine on the menu as well. Great wine menu. All I can say is they got the spirit 😉 Lowlights: Dessert: This can be improved. Ideas are good but not tasty. - Matcha cheesecake: it was like a san sebastian cheesecake (burnt) but the consistency was too dense. - Chocolate mousse: it was more like a choco-pudding. It should be more foamy. - Green tea brulee: Consistency is good but I felt marine aroma. So maybe the green tea used in this recipe should be swapped. Dunno, Im not a chef but didnt like it. Only providing this feedback for the dessert because I believe mu is very reactive. I'd say other than dessert food is fantastic. Definitely would love to go again. I loved the music. It is really an experience. Very fun. Wasnt overwhelming either as the band took breaks that gives us time to chat occassionally and enjoy the music rest of the time.
