Mucca: A Contemporary Northern Italian Steakhouse Opens in Little Italy | Eater Montreal

"I'm writing about a contemporary Italian trattoria and steakhouse called Mucca (Italian for cow) that has opened on St‑Zotique Street in Little Italy. Owned and managed by husband-and-wife team Pasquale Martone and Karine Massicotte, the spot showcases grass-fed beef and house-made charcuterie alongside homemade breads and pastas, taking over the former Hostaria location. Martone, the chef, grew up in the restaurant business and aims to share family traditions in his old neighbourhood with a compact, classically divided menu of antipasti, primi, and secondi and an intention of respecting animals and nature. They source prime grass-fed beef from producers in Alberta and Ontario and age the meat in-house, while other meats reflect northern Italian influences—organic lamb, rabbit, goat, and coquelet—from a local Québec producer. The couple also commit to a vegetarian-friendly selection, including homemade pastas and Northern Italian vegetable dishes like polenta crostini with gorgonzola and pomodorini and malfati pasta with pecorino and butter, and offer a separate kitchen station for wheat-free pasta and bread to serve gluten-free diners. The wine list is focused on northern Italian regions (Veneto, Piemonte, Liguria, Toscana) with varietals such as Nebbiolo, Barbera, Valpolicella, and Dolcetto, bottles aimed at the $40–$60 range and glasses $10–$16, and local beer will be available. Massicotte designed the bright 50-seat white-and-black dining room with emerald green accents, a long bar with vintage butcher equipment, and a glassed-in climate-controlled dry-aging room for the prime beef. Mucca is open at 236 St-Zotique E for dinner Tuesday to Saturday (5–11 p.m.) and for lunch Thursday and Friday (12–3 p.m.), starting Wednesday, July 31." - Ivy Lerner-Frank

Came with high expectation and left with disappointment (well at least we are full)…the appetizers and pasta are underwhelming, and the steak was ok but still not something worthy to come back. We all found here a bit overhyped. It’s good to support the local ingredients but the cooking technique is just…ordinary. Service is good though!

We had a great dinner at Mucca in Montreal. The atmosphere was warm and welcoming, with a cozy vibe that made us feel right at home. It’s located on Rue Saint-Zotique in the charming Little Italy neighborhood, which adds to the overall experience quiet, local, and full of character. We started with the Fiori di zucca zucchini flowers filled with ricotta. The dish was light, subtly crisp, fresh, and beautifully presented. For our main course, we ordered the Costata, a 20oz rib steak from Holstein cattle aged for 50 days. It was cooked perfectly medium, just as requested , great flavor, generously portioned. To finish, we had ice cream served with a crisp waffle tucked in. It was incredibly delicious creamy, rich, and satisfying. One thing we really appreciated is that Mucca makes many of its recipes fresh in-house including the bread, which was warm and delicious. That extra care in preparation really shows in the quality of service and food. The person who served us was friendly, attentive, and informative. We had different appetites and preferences, and they took the time to check in, understand what we were looking for, and recommend the most fitting dish for the evening. Their suggestion was spot-on, and we fully enjoyed it. We also had the chance to speak with the chef / the owner , lovely people. They’ve started Mucca with a mission: to keep the menu simple, authentic, uncompromising in quality. Everything we tasted was top-notch, and the pricing was very good for the quality offered. We’ll definitely be coming back to try more of their signature ice cream & the Tomahawk steak. 👍🎊

Classic with creative modern touch. Food is like your aged-like-fine-wine-nona's cooking. Unexpected delicious busting flavors with beautiful depth of ingredients's unami. Everyone was welcoming and Valérie at the bar gave us excellent wine recommendation. Definitely will come back!

Scrumdelicious aged T-bone with smashed potatoes and greens. The veggies were tasty and I’d happily take double. We’ll definitely be back, though next time we would like to sit by the wall. Being in the middle meant a parade of butts and bellies brushing a little too close for comfort.

Absolutely incredible experience at Mucca! This Italian steakhouse completely exceeded my expectations. The food was absolutely amazing — every bite was bursting with flavor and clearly made with high-quality ingredients. The steak was perfectly cooked and paired beautifully with traditional Italian sides. The atmosphere was warm and inviting, and the service was top-notch. I had so much fun and left feeling full, happy, and already thinking about my next visit. Highly recommend Mucca if you’re looking for a memorable dining experience!

Google
What a great experience! This food took me back to my Italian roots, real authentic. I highly recommend this restaurant, they also have a great variety of grappa’s that you don’t usually find in restaurants in Montreal. Morgane our waitress was fabulous, we also got to chat with the owner Karine, also lovely! Thank you for the wonderful experience !

Cozy place with great food. Nice wine selection with wines from countries you dont often see in restaurants. Owner and wait staff were very nice! Would recommend to anyone who is looking for a good steak and a good plate of pasta.

In town for an event, and our group of 9 randomly decided to try Mucca since it was a few blocks away. Great decision! We were lucky to snag a few tables for the entire group and the Owner served us directly and essentially helped us customize a meal to suit our party size and preferences. She was so engaging and helpful explaining her farm to table approach. We literally got 1 of everything on the menu! Ribeye, tbone, and tomahawk, Tagliatelle pasta, and charcuterie board. Steaks cooked to perfection medium rare. Had good selection of local wines. Finished if off with few desserts. The Salame Cioccolato was surprisingly good! Literally looks like a thick slab of salame but rich chocolatey firm mousse. So good. Loved the atmosphere and how engaging and helpful the owner was even when we had questions about montreal in general. You Must try!

Yelp
Wow, the food (steak & pasta), the service (friendly & attentive), & the bar (wine & spirits) are all outstanding. Start with some pasta then move on to a T-Bone & some red wine...now that's class.

Yelp
Came to mucca to celebrate a friends birthday he had been ranting and raving about this spot for a while so I was excited to finally be able to see what it's all about. We were a group of 6 and had all decided to try the tasting menu which really was every item on the menu. The menu changes up to 3 times a week so whenever you come your grantees to try something new. The dinner service started with our amazing waitress who took the time to give us some background on the restaurant and the menu. Naturally we got drinks to start they have an extensive wine list but if your like me and enjoy cocktails more the negroni sabliato was perfect. The next round was mainly appetizer with a beef tartar, homemade bread, burrata and jam, salad and a few other amazing items. We then got to the pasta course and had 3 different types including a swordfish pasta which was a first time for me. Finally the star of the night the mucca which is cow in Italian! The beef was some of the best I've had the porterhouse was to die for and the sides of greens and guanciale mashed potatoes were the chefs kiss. Believe it or not we still weren't done and got to have dessert, the lemon tiramisu is something everyone needs to try at-least once in their lives. The overall ambience was a laidback upscale feel, the room lights are lowered and real candles are used during the dinner service. The music was a great throwback of some of the best songs from the 90s without being so loud you can't hear your table. If your looking for a place to spoil yourself Mucca will definitely take care of you!

Yelp
I came here with my wife one evening on a trip to Montréal. We frequent quite often and are thinking about moving here so we just wanted to try a few different restaurants. I have to say from start to finish I was completely floored by this place. To start, when we arrived, it was incredibly busy. The owner met us at the door immediately and despite not having a reservation, she made room for us at the bar which I really appreciated. She explained that the menu changes every week which I love the concept of because it keeps the experience exclusive and never the same. We asked for wine recommendations and they were very accommodating, asking what we liked and were looking for. My wife doesn't drink alcohol so they made her a specialty mocktail which was so kind and very delicious. We ordered the bucatini and the porterhouse steak. The steak was delicious and cooked to perfection, the bucatini tasted fresh and you can tell it was homemade pasta. The place is small and intimate, the owner is very hands on. She took our order, checked in on us and was doing this for everyone in the restaurant. It was very impressive to watch her, you can tell she cares. Her whole staff is the same way. We gave huge compliments to the chef and staff. Food, wine, drinks, atmosphere was very lovely. We will definitely be coming back and will become regulars once we move here.

Yelp
Food not worth the fuss. Porterhouse " aged" was just ok. A piece of meat from Provigo would have tasted better and cheaper.. Owner very rude. Only highlight, is the service from an amazing server who will be better off in an another restaurant..

Yelp
My friend and I had a truly wonderful evening at Mucca. This restaurant only opened a week or so ago, but the staff, the food, and the ambiance were all what I'd expect from any of my favorite restaurants. The menu (which changes week to week) is spare and inviting, and they have a well chosen wine list that features mostly biodynamic and natural wines. Between us, we had two pasta dishes, an appetizer, and a dessert--all were delicious. Our waiter, Caleb, was warm and charming, and helped lend the restaurant a personality that feels unique in Montréal. I think this restaurant is a great neighborhood spot in the making. If only I lived in the neighborhood!

Yelp
Great little restaurant with amazing appetizers and cool sampler menu with wine pairings. The principle meat dishes are delicious. Highly recommended. I believe they use mostly locally sourced ingredients.

Yelp
Walking on Saint-Zotique street looking for a nice restaurant in little Italy, we came across this small but yet lovely restaurant. We decided to give it a shot and let me tell you all... it exceeded our expectations! The appetizers were phenomenal and main courses even better! They have a great selection of wines as well mouth watering desserts. I will definitely be going back to this resto since I work in the area ;)
