We stopped in after our very long morning of hiking Torc Waterfall, walking to Muckross House, and taking a Jaunting cart back to the waterfall...we were starving, and it was just barely 11:00am, so nothing else nearby was open.
We were seated right away, wherever we wanted, and it was empty (as they'd just opened).
In retrospect, we really should have sat by the fireplace, as it was a cool morning, and sitting by the fire would have been incredible. Our mistake.
We ordered a couple of drinks...I got the prettiest cocktail I've ever had, and I'm really sad that I can't remember what it was called. It was really good. Light and refreshing.
We also got scones, as they weren't serving food besides scones yet.
The scone was amazing. Maybe I'm just saying that because I'm obsessed with scones...because every single one I ate was amazing...but I digress.
When noon rolled around, we ordered some food: seafood chowder and a steak sandwich.
The chowder was flavorful but thin. It was less like a chowder and more like a cream based soup...not thick enough to be a chowder.
The steak sandwich was ok. It was a little hard to bite into for me (really large chunks of steak that didn't tear easily), but again, it was flavorful.
Service was polite, but a bit aloof.
All in all, the reason for only 3 stars was that it was really kind of expensive for what we got, when the quality of the food (besides the scone) was just kind of "meh."
I wouldn't say "stay away", just maybe come in for cocktails, tea, and scones, and skip the other offerings.
