10 Best Museums in Lisbon | Condé Nast Traveler

"No word yet when MUDE will finally complete its renovation, but MUDE Outside, a series of pop-ups paying tribute to the intersection of design and culture, will keep us sated while we're waiting for the dramatic revamp of this fashion and design museum, set in an old bank. The museum pre-reno had more than 2,000 objects—a mix of clothing, accessories, footwear, furniture, and objects—that touch on themes like luxury and counterculture. Past exhibits featured Alexander McQueen, Balenciaga, and Jean-Paul Gaultier." - Alia Akkam

MUDE (Museu do Design e da Moda), Lisbon, Portugal - Museum Review | Condé Nast Traveler

"We heard this place was closed; what's the scoop? There's no word yet when MUDE will finally complete its renovation, but MUDE Outside will keep us sated while we're waiting for the dramatic revamp of this fashion and design museum, which is situated in an old bank. Got it. And, before the temporary overhaul (and, hopefully, after), what could you see here? Prior to its overhaul, the museum featured more than 2,000 objects—a mix of clothing, accessories, footwear, furniture, and objects—that touched on themes like luxury and counterculture. Past exhibitions have highlighted designers like Alexander McQueen, Balenciaga, and Jean-Paul Gaultier. Sounds fabulous! In the meantime, what can MUDE Outside offer visitors? MUDE Outside hosts citywide pop-ups that keep momentum going during the museum's closure. Farther afield, MUDE organized "How Do We Pronounce Design in Portuguese?," a large cross-disciplinary show in Providence in collaboration with Rhode Island School of Design. Excellent. And, who will we be exchanging wanting glances with? (Over the pieces, that is.) Creative types enamored with the nuances of design and fashion." - Alia Akkam

This design museum has a great range of furnishing, fashion, and products. They are well presented and described. When I visited (April 2025), one gallery was yet to open after the recent refurbishment, and the cafe and rooftop restaurant were not yet open. Being able to see the amazing basement vaults and safety deposit rooms (from its days as a grand central bank in Lisbon) is one very good reason why it's worth visiting this museum

The exhibit of Portuguese fashion, graphic, a s furniture design was nicely curated yet felt underwhelming. I might suggest to pass for this exhibit unless you have an hour free and are looking to pass the time. The building architecture and interior design was well done. The staff was friendly and helpful.

Very nice, we originally went for the Vivienne Westwood exposition, and ended up visiting the whole museum, which was very pleasant and pretty. The rooftop view was amazing.

This museum is really interesting, full of quite quirky items, and the building (an old bank), in which it is housed is great. After visiting the three floors of design exhibits, it is worth going down to the basement to the old bank vaults. Someone should film scenes for a movie or TV series down there. The signage in the museum is pretty awful and doesn't communicate effectively with the public, which is par for the course here, but overall, it is a super interesting place. There were very few visitors, which was a shame, and no postcards or posters. I hope that changes in the future.

Absolutely disappointing experience at MUDE Lisbon. For €13, there was almost nothing to see. The museum had no exhibitions, no terrace, and no café — it felt completely empty. It’s hard to understand how they justify the entrance fee for such a lackluster visit. Definitely not worth the money or time. Only the room with bank sells is worthy, but it can be visited for free.

I really enjoyed this museum. There is so much to see and the expositions are done in such an interesting way. I could spend the whole day here!

We were about to buy tickets when the guard very happily and sneakily told us that the bathrooms were only for visitors. Adding that to the antisematic displays disguised as museum exhibits I don't think I can recommend this provincial museum and I don't believe I'll be returning

Interesting exhibitions. The temporary one on Portuguese clothing design of recent decades was more cohesive than the permanent one which at times felt like a random set of pieces loosely strung together.

Yelp
Nice to enter for free in a museum, and particularly when it's not a very good exhibition. It's an old bank which became a museum of modern art. So a great building. Quite interesting ground floor : objects, furnitures and clothes from all the times. Not many explanations on the walls, too bad that they don't propose a short visit with a guide, even with a student in art. We went to see the exhition at the 1st floor but we didn't enjoy it. It was about researches necesary to organise an exhibition. A lot of papers to read, not very ludic or interactive. At the end a video on an old TV but just in portuguese, with no subtutiles ! We couldn' understand what it was about...

Yelp
I just love MUDE! This Fashion and Design museum in the heart of the old town in Lisbon is inspiring, well layed-out and it's FREE! 4 floors cover different exhibitions of Portuguese and international design with changing temporary shows on the top and lower level. Right now you can enjoy original stage costumes that have been made for Shakesspeare plays, Tchaikovsky's Swan Lake and many more. Upcoming later in May will be a Christian Lacroix feature which sadly I'll be missing.
