"Michael J. Phillips and Panuwat Prasertyotin opened the first Mugen Noodle Bar in Tigard in 2018. While that location grew in popularity, the duo continued to visit Hood River, a favorite place of theirs; they loved it here so much, they ended up opening a second location in the Gorge town, a few blocks away from the Mt. Hood train station. With its many ramen options — everything from black garlic with pork belly to braised duck — it quickly became a favorite of locals. Snag a seat on the deck overlooking downtown while you enjoy a rich ramen, with a broth that simmers for at least half a day before being served." - Melissa Haskin, Molly Allen

I’m not a big fan of Ramen restaurants as they have not had a great menu selection for me. This changed at Mugen. What a gem this is. I’m a huge curry fan and their curry chicken dish was excellent, could eat everyday! Nancy ordered a Tofu dish and was equally impressed, best she has had!

I cannot say enough wonderful things about this restaurant!! Phenomenal food and fantastic staff. My partner and I drive all the way out from West of Portland to hike and enjoy this food. We decided to celebrate our wedding here and had such a great experience. They accommodated our group and special requests. THANK YOU, Pat Mugen and your wondering staff for making our day so special. We felt like part of the family and will be back as often as possible 💐🍜🥂

I would rate their duck one of the best across the united state, very tendering, well braised making it rich in flavor with right amount of salt. The ramen soup was duck based and makes a rich and unique taste. Even better than some of the Michelin restaurants which makes duck dishes…

The curry was the best part of the meal, accompanied by some delicious chicken karage. I was NOT impressed with the ramen; especially the exorbitantly priced extra egg. It really seemed like they were cutting hard corners with contemporary high egg prices. I imagine the kitchen staff are as inattentive and lackadaisical as their wait staff. The kicker was that our tasty Thai iced coffees were $7 a piece (admittedly comparable to Starbucks prices, but still an outrageous bail in the coffin to my bad experience here.)

Just wasted money and time here. Charging NYC prices for a tiny bowl of bad ramen is wild. The noodles were not cooked all the way and they also didn't add the crispy noodles that Khao Soi should have on top and instead put a tortilla on top lol They charged a whole dollar for a little bit of spice (without warning you that it was extra). Apparently you are supposed to read the whole menu to find the fine print (which also isn't very straightforward). Service was slow yet they weren't busy at all. I think it took nearly 15-20 min to just order. My friends left to go get food elsewhere because no one has even stopped by to ask us if we wanted a drink. I'm assuming the high ratings are from local friends or from pre-covid.

Poor Mugen noodle was understaffed, but they had a sign on the door explaining the situation, so we went in expecting a delay. It was certainly not fast, but the server guy was nice and the food was fantastic. I got the second ramen option (spicy curry something), and it was extremely tasty. Not very spicy, but a great flavor. We had a lovely time.

Mugen noodle - black garlic Ramen Base of broth is shoyu, added complexity with black garlic and togarashi. Noodles are great. Thick alkaline egg noodles with a nice bite. Chashu is good. Seared to add char, it's satisfying. Mine was slightly overcooked in some parts if I'm being nitpicky, but it's good nonetheless. Molten egg is good. Prepped separately and added, has a good shoyu flavor and is not overcooked. Very solid chicken-based shoyu, would recommend.

The ika (deep fried octopus) salad was wonderful. I would order it every time. The noodle is thick, my personal preference. The pork was chargrilled perfectly, enhancing its flavor. The broth was excellent & spice level was perfect. 2 thumbs up!
