Eat and Drink Your Way Through the Columbia River Gorge

"Michael J. Phillips and Panuwat Prasertyotin opened the first Mugen Noodle Bar in Tigard in 2018. While that location grew in popularity, the duo continued to visit Hood River, a favorite place of theirs; they loved it here so much, they ended up opening a second location in the Gorge town, a few blocks away from the Mt. Hood train station. With its many ramen options — everything from black garlic with pork belly to braised duck — it quickly became a favorite of locals. Snag a seat on the deck overlooking downtown while you enjoy a rich ramen, with a broth that simmers for at least half a day before being served." - Melissa Haskin, Molly Allen

Google
I’m not a big fan of Ramen restaurants as they have not had a great menu selection for me. This changed at Mugen. What a gem this is. I’m a huge curry fan and their curry chicken dish was excellent, could eat everyday! Nancy ordered a Tofu dish and was equally impressed, best she has had!

Google
Broth was just ok really lacked the flavor and depth that we like to have in our ramen. We had the black garlic, salmon miso(Togo) curry based one. The least favorite was the curry based one it was too sweet. The black garlic one was just ok and the salmon miso was probably the best. Also had the Calamari and that was pretty bland and the pot stickers were just mediocre.

Google
I cannot say enough wonderful things about this restaurant!! Phenomenal food and fantastic staff. My partner and I drive all the way out from West of Portland to hike and enjoy this food. We decided to celebrate our wedding here and had such a great experience. They accommodated our group and special requests. THANK YOU, Pat Mugen and your wondering staff for making our day so special. We felt like part of the family and will be back as often as possible 💐🍜🥂

Google
I would rate their duck one of the best across the united state, very tendering, well braised making it rich in flavor with right amount of salt. The ramen soup was duck based and makes a rich and unique taste. Even better than some of the Michelin restaurants which makes duck dishes…

Google
The curry was the best part of the meal, accompanied by some delicious chicken karage. I was NOT impressed with the ramen; especially the exorbitantly priced extra egg. It really seemed like they were cutting hard corners with contemporary high egg prices. I imagine the kitchen staff are as inattentive and lackadaisical as their wait staff. The kicker was that our tasty Thai iced coffees were $7 a piece (admittedly comparable to Starbucks prices, but still an outrageous bail in the coffin to my bad experience here.)

Google
Food was great. Had the black garlic ramen and spicy shrimp ramen. Loved both. Very fresh and flavorful.

Google
This is one of my favorite ramen noodle places and I have been to Japan where I have eaten at many to compare. Food is delicious, service is fast and friendly. Love this place. You won't be disappointed.

Google
Just wasted money and time here. Charging NYC prices for a tiny bowl of bad ramen is wild. The noodles were not cooked all the way and they also didn't add the crispy noodles that Khao Soi should have on top and instead put a tortilla on top lol They charged a whole dollar for a little bit of spice (without warning you that it was extra). Apparently you are supposed to read the whole menu to find the fine print (which also isn't very straightforward). Service was slow yet they weren't busy at all. I think it took nearly 15-20 min to just order. My friends left to go get food elsewhere because no one has even stopped by to ask us if we wanted a drink. I'm assuming the high ratings are from local friends or from pre-covid.

Yelp
Wasn't expecting to have really great ramen in Hood River of all places. I had the Shoyu Chintan ramen with tofu and my husband had the Black Garlic ramen with pork. They both were delicious, packed with flavor and the noodles were great too! Highly recommend!

Yelp
Good Day Yelpies !! If you're looking for awesome food superior service and in a dog friendly environment then you have just found this amazing place. We ordered our food 30min prior to them closing and they served it up fast and hot. Not only that but a family of 6 arrived and they did the same thing...... you and I know most restaurants hate this situation and you normally get very bad service and sub par food.... But not here. They are amazing

Yelp
The service is as warm as the ramen! The owner told me the noodles are made in Portland using her recipe. You can taste the freshness is their delightful texture. As others have mentioned the price is a bit high as ramen goes, but the quality is really there, so I wasn't bothered.

Yelp
I got the chicken broth ramen. It was unusually they must specialize in chicken broth, because I guess the pork broth can be very difficult to pull off. The pork was good it was more like a kinda barbecue but still good. Nice and savory, as well as tender. The chicken broth was good, with medium spicy via flakes. It didn't feel super rich or hearty though, and a bit flat. The Egg was ok, and they did get the typical flavor inside! TBH didn't really like the noodles. They were egg noodles but didn't feel like they were the appropriate kind for ramen. But at least they weren't the Korean style instant ramen texture either The biggest thing is that it was $21. This is quite steep! So id have given a 4stars had it been more appropriate for pricing

Yelp
First time dining here, and it was a great experience. The ramen was excellent--rich, flavorful, and satisfying. While the price was a bit steep at $25 for a bowl, the quality made it worthwhile. We were seated quickly and our food arrived promptly. The restaurant was clean and well-maintained. Overall, one of the best ramen spots I've been to.

Yelp
Was visiting Hood River on a cold rainy night, so when I discovered a well-reviewed ramen spot in town. It seemed like it'd hit the spot. Mugen is in a nice downtown-ish area with its own parking lot attached. The first thing I noticed was the menu, specifically its layout. It was cluttered and could use some design work. Now, when it came to the dishes, I noticed right away this is not a typical Japanese ramen joint. With so many spicy choices, items like coconut, duck, khao soi, and wine selections, I want to say it's definitely Japanese fusion with Thai influence. I had the Shoyu Chintan ($19) and it was very good. The pork came with a generous portion and my medium spice level brought the good heat in the broth. However, I want a fan of the thick Thai style egg noodles. It was good, but not what I'd like in my ramen. I also had the Karaage (crispy chicken) (without rice $14) and it was very, meh. Both dishes were a little overpriced but considering this type of meal in a small mountain town, Mugen was an enjoyable meal.

Yelp
Outstanding food. I had the spicy shrimp Ramen and my husband ordered the Duck Curry Ramen. We did both at Medium spicy. We each took one taste and then devoured the Ramen to the very last drop. Incredible levels of flavor and different textures. We really wish we lived closer because we would be here at least once a week. We will be back one day!

Yelp
Good ramen and Khao Soi. I love that our dog can join us for lunch or dinner on the patio. we'll be back!!!

Yelp
Although there were a number of new restaurants near the river, I was looking for a smaller local place in the downtown area of Hood River. When I found a parking spot, it was just down the hill from MUGEN noodle. My black garlic Ramen with pork was delicious, the broth so complex the restaurant is owned and run by a small family. I checked out their website. I was delighted to see that the little girls in the family photo were now the adult women serving along with their mother, while their father (who I didn't actually see) was cooking in the back. I will definitely go back next time. I'm in Hood River and buy a sweatshirt this time, they had some really cool designs.

Yelp
Good meet up with friends we mountain biked with. We were hungry! The Asian cultural mix of ramen bowls were hearty and delicious. Wife went for Bamee - curry broth, tofu, scallion, cherry tomato, arugula, kikurage ,com, cabbage, sesame and cashew. I tired the Kati - Coconut base broth, tofu, arugula, corn, nut crumble, micro green, kikurage, Shimeji mushroom, cherry tomato and scallion. The coconut based was excellent - not typical Thai, Korean, Japanese or Vietnamese tasting! A mix? Sources local! Service with a smile. Eat inside or on the patio. I guarantee you'll be satisfied and smiling when you leave.

Yelp
Our group of 4 had delicious ramen at this cute spot. It was a casual and friendly place to have lunch for a birthday. They had cool T-shirts for sale too. I would definitely come back here.

Yelp
Stop by here for lunch on a work trip. The ambient was casual with a lot of merchandise for sale. I ordered their black garlic chintan (spicy). I was not impressed with the ramen broth. The broth was bland but spicy. I could taste the spiciness, but that was it. The pork and egg that came with it was delicious, the ramen was chewy. Price point was a bit on the pricy side for what you get. My ramen came out to be $20 ($1 was tacked on for the spicy level, which I was unaware of). I don't think I will come back.

Thanh N.

Yelp
Bland food, charged a full meal when we only ordered the chicken and rice, when we asked for the chicken to be spicy. Waiter said it was okay when taking our order. Waitress gave us attitude when we questioned it. And we ended having to pay full meal price. Not recommended
google avatar

Jamie A.

Yelp
We stopped for dinner on our way through town based on excellent reviews. We were surprised that the prices were way more than advertised and the portions weren't reflective of the price. The ramen is okay we have had way better for way less. Overall we won't go back because it felt weird that the price we were charged was more than was on the menu. We only had ramen and for two it was $45.

Yelp
Service and food were good. The broth for both the duck chintan and Khao soi tofu vegan were on the light side. Sake flights were both delicious but we like the nigori flight better than the Oregon craft flight. Would also recommend the Yomi ginjo can.

Yelp
Fantastic, well-executed ramen. These guys really care. Try the YuZu Limeade also. Delish

Yelp
Boy am I glad we found this spot after our day in Mt. Hood!! It was the perfect combination of authentic, cozy, and restorative for us. I got the spicy shrimp ramen and my mom tried the chicken shoyu - both broths were flavorful and rich. The noodles are chewy and in mine, the shrimp were cooked to perfection. (Not overdone as they do frequently are in soups.) The sweet little lady running the shop was very dedicated to her customers and very patient in helping us navigate the menu and deciding what would be best for our specific tastes. I was pleasantly surprised to find a free lot next to the establishment as everything else in the area is paid. Loved my experience and would readily return!

Yelp
I would say this place was very average. Not super friendly service or great ambiance. And the drinks? They had one beer on draft and they were out. They call themselves a beer bar too. Odd. The food was okay. I loved that they made everything gluten free by adding rice noodles. That helped a lot and the Khai So was spicy just like I like it. Solid choice. Not sure I would go back.

Yelp
Great Ramen, we had the Shoyu, Shio and Curry (spicy) and loved them till the end. Good flavors and fast service too.

Yelp
Great hole in the wall with a awesome view. It's a find. The food is really good and authentic.

Yelp
Wow. Stopped in while traveling and got the spicy fish. Chose hot because I like things at or above Sriracha. Very happy with the choice. The serving size was excellent and the staff were friendly, kind, and helpful. They were very busy when I went there, so don't expect a fast meal. But, with the calm surroundings, a relaxing meal was exactly what I was hoping for anyway.
google avatar

Keoni L.

Yelp
I had the duck chintan ramen and it was fantastic. The broth was complex and you can tell they put a lot of care and pride into their soups.
google avatar

Brian X.

Yelp
Ordered the Khao Soi. Overall it wasn't a bad bowl of noodles. I really loved the pickled mustard greens in the bowl, it added nice flavors and texture. But was it worth the price? I'd say no, respectfully. It could be the location, but personally I wouldn't spend that much money on a bowl of Khao Soi. But the restaurant and staff were friendly and nice.
google avatar

Yelp
The 3 stars are for the very slow service and the fact that I got the shrimp salad and it was fried shrimp (the menu didn't say it was tempura shrimp). It took almost 20 min to get our order in and an hour to get the three ramens. I wish they had curry and rice with chicken that wasn't fried. Would have tried that but for the fact it was fried. Those in my party that had ramen enjoyed it. Won't be returning though.

Yelp
Driving through Hood River and decided to stop in for lunch. Small place, but excellent ambiance and delicious food. We ordered Crab Rangoon to start, Chicken Katsu, and Black Garlic Chintan. All were excellent. Crab Rangoon was homemade with very fresh filling. The chicken Katsu came on a bed of rice with a side salad. The dressing on the salad was very good. Chicken had amazing flavor and was super crispy. The Black Garlic Chintan had an interesting mix of flavors, but brought together was great. I have been on a pho kick and this was a new offering to me. The pork was extremely tender and flavorful. I was afraid the broth might be salty based on another review, but it was not overpowering. The noodles, oh the noodles. A++.

Kashae R.

Yelp
Ordered the black garlic ramen with pork. So yummy. Very flavorful broth and the pork was tender and crispy at the same time. Did order "medium spice" and next time might do mild just so I can enjoy the flavor of the broth on its own more. Great service and great experience l.

Yelp
Cute little ramen shop. Went on the weekend with no lines and we were immediately seated. Bathrooms are clean. This is a nice place to sit and relax in the middle of Hood River's downtown. Food was OK. Black garlic (chintan) was a hit but Khao Soi was a miss. Black garlic ramen is garlicky, but love that it is. Chashu is flavorful and melts in your mouth. Khao soi broth lacked umami and the chicken tasted like it was going bad. If I'm in the area again, I'd come back here but not as a first pick and avoid the Khao Soi.

Yelp
We were in town and was craving Asian food and decided to try Mugen. The service is amazing and very attentive. Checked on us often to see if we needed anything. We ordered the shrimp tempura, chicken and rice as well as the ka soy noodles that most people were raving about, so I decided to try. I chose the medium heat and when my soup arrived it wasn't hot. The noodles seemed to chewy for me and took me longer to eat. The flavors of the soup were rich in taste and the medium wasn't hot. (Mild) The restaurant has in door and outdoor seating. Cute decor inside and outside. If you're on the patio seating you can get a view of the river.

Yelp
Second time visit today with my whole family. Service was kind and friendly and the food was delicious. I had the Khao Soi for the second time. It's my favorite noodle dish and I'm just thrilled that there are so many versions of it in Northwest Oregon. Back in CA, there was only one place an hour away. Now I have like 5 different Khao Soi restaurants to try. Anyhoo, the one at Mugen Noodle is my current favorite. I had medium spicy and it was exactly what I was expecting. The mustard pickles were really tasty and the soft boiled egg was perfectly flavored. The noodles are perfectly chewy. Husband had the black garlic noods and eldest son had the shoyu. We also ordered the shrimp tempura appetizer and it was enough for all four of us to have a taste -well I had the salad and not the shrimp, but the salad was great too! Bonus points for having ramune! Love love love! I don't write reviews often, but this is a new family favorite, well worth the drive from Portland.

Yelp
They get so many things right. The pork chashu was some of the most amazing I've had. The egg was *chefs kiss*. Just really really good ramen. On notes of personal preference I like my ramen noodles on the thinner side and these were thicker. Serving size was just right for me. Not huge, not small. Prices are a little high, but a solid choice for delicious ramen.

Yelp
A surprise fantastic stop on our weekend getaway to Hood River. We came here for dinner on a chilly night, hoping to warm up with some Ramen. We sat outside and had a little heater to ourselves to keep us warm. Everyone was so kind and helpful getting us seated right away and taking our order quickly. We started with crab rangoon and sesame balls, both tasty and warm. We had some tea as well, served in an adorable little owl mug to hold the tea bag. The ramen itself was excellent, the best I have had in Oregon so far. My partner got the black garlic chintan, it was creamy and flavorful. I had the shio chintan, which had a light salty broth. The chasu was tender, the egg was cooked perfectly, and the noodles had a great chew. The rest of our party enjoyed both the katsu and curry tofu rice plate. Above all, it was the perfect hearty meal to warm us up on a cold night.

Yelp
What an awesome discovery! We have been coming home from our ski days through Hood River depending on conditions and we decided a last Ko the to check out lunch spots and found Mugen. Everything we have had has been delicious, well constructed and unique in some way. The buttered ramen was a great kid lunch along with fried oysters and Khao Soi for me. Next time we had Duck Ramen for the boy and I got the shrimp ramen. AMAZING! And then yesterday was Duck Ramen again and the Mazman mix noodles. Just perfect. Great service great spot, just a great find. The kids call it our new tradition.
google avatar

Sandee M.

Yelp
Ordered take out & everything we had was really fresh and good. They were so helpful with gluten free options. The chicken karaage was gluten free, very good & not too spicy. Asked if shrimp salad had gluten, they offered to grill shrimp rather than tempura so it worked well for us. The sticky rice & mango were the perfect way to finish our dinner. We'll be back the next time we're in Hood River!

Kendra T.

Yelp
What a gem! Ramen is delicious, and the staff are welcoming. I went to place a "to go" order and know I will be back to dine outdoors!
google avatar

Morgan M.

Yelp
Amazing! Gluten free options! Happy eaters all around! Service fabulous! Great location to walk around! Even a outdoor area to sit and eat! I wish I would have called to ask about dog seating but we just got take out... I would have loved to have sat down and had our meal!
google avatar

Yelp
Excellent food. Interesting menu. Crowded but the service was fast and friendly. We all found something we liked. Try the grouper!
google avatar

Sam H.

Yelp
I had the garlic ramen with charsiu. The broth was tasty and the charsiu was toasted nicely. The ramen texture was somewhat al dente but tasted good. Overall it was a decent ramen dish. We had the pot stickers and they were fried well but the filling was just okay.
google avatar

Rebecca D.

Yelp
Friendly service, yummy ramen. Cute little spot to grab a sit-down meal. Not a fast-food vibe at all. If we lived here, we'd be regulars.
google avatar

Jay H.

Yelp
Ramen noodles is why you visit this place. Perfect degree of chewiness and taste. The ramen noodles (wet or dry) are super tasty. I had the dry and made the mistake of asking for 'spicy' - it's not your grandfather's spicy - my advice is to get the spices on the side. My partner had the regular wet and w/o spices - oh so very tasty! I also found that their pricing on wine to be very reasonable. That or they don't know how much the other restaurants are gouging their patrons for alcohol.
google avatar

Kim G.

Yelp
One of the only restaurants still serving at 8:30 on a Saturday night, decided to give Mugen Noodle a try. It was so hot outside that we didn't want to have their famous ramen, but there were so many other options. We went with the chicken katso salad (had a fancier name) and it was fresh and delicious! The chicken was crispy yet so tender inside, which isn't always the case. The chili lime dressing gave it a fantastic kick. I'm already craving it again! For an appetizer we ordered the tempura shrimp; it was crispy and delicious. There were five shrimp for $12, a bit pricy, but they were satisfying. Even at this time of the night, the place was bustling! Lots of people sitting outside, some inside and even more arriving for pick up. Families, couples, singles - everyone. While sitting outside there are great views of the river and the windsurfers. Parking right on the street out front or behind the restaurant. Will definitely be back and can't wait to try the ramen!

Yelp
Great food Great service. The view from the restaurant is spectacular Khao Soi RamenMazemen

Yelp
Amazing food and service every time! I've taken many out of town visitors here because it's always great food.

Yelp
Service was great! Food was yummy! Loved the view of the mountains while eating. We both got ramen and it was very flavorful.

Yelp
Super yummy broth, very nice chasu pork and good noodles! 10/10 would recommend and would visit again!

Yelp
Uh oh, I think this is my favorite Ramen spot in ALL OF OREGON and this means I'll have to drive an hour every time I want it. With an infusion of Thai flavors into the ramen, many vegan/vegetarian options, sourcing fine and high quality ingredients from local markets, I'd say Mugen is well worth the journey. I initially balked at the average $20 tag on the bowls of ramen, but when we dove in I discovered it was a fair price! The "Fire Fish" ramen came with an assortment of bright colorful veggies and a HUGE hunk of salmon that was so juicy and lightly fried to perfection. Loved the nutty, creamy, and lemongrass undertones to the broth. Spice warning! The medium is pleasantly spicy and the hot might leave you sweating or your mouth watering. I love me a place that delivers on the spice! The Hazelnut Ramen was so unique and actually delicious. The tofu was cooked expertly and soaked in all the hearty flavors of the broth. For all the ramen, I loved the noodles. Slightly crunchy and obviously fresh. This is not your Cup Noodles experience and you'll never want to go back. "Tako Salad" was fresh and delicious, with their house dressing elevating salad to a new level. I'd definitely order this again!

Briseyda M.

Yelp
I was disappointed in my last visit here. The employees ignored us when we tried to enter and the side door entrance was locked. (We got there at 6:30PM and people were inside.) The food was okay, definitely not as good as it used to be. The service was lacking to say the least.
google avatar

Surya R.

Yelp
We loved the food, but I should say it is pricey for the quantity! Vegan dishes - Kati noodles - really good Tofu Katsu with Japanese curry - the curry was good but less quantity, the tofu katsu was basic fried tofu Khao soy - everyone in our group felt it was tooo salty so we asked if it can be remade. They took it back and asked us to order something else instead. Potato croquettes, egg rolls - good The others in our group loved their meat and seafood dishes as well.

Yelp
Love the vibe here, the great customer service, and the food was always great. I was living in Oregon for a couple of years my go-to ramen spot.
