New Bay Area Restaurants: Bandit, Maker of San Francisco’s Best Breakfast Sandwiches, Opens Dogpatch Restaurant | Eater SF

"Building on the pandemic-era reputation for quality sushi at affordable prices in Oakland, Mujiri expanded with a second location in Hayward (opening June 20) that promises the same neighborhood appeal." - Lauren Saria

Google
If you're a sushi lover in Hayward, Mujiri is a must-visit. This spot is all about quality over quantity—you won't find your typical rolls here, but what you will get is incredibly fresh, high-quality sashimi that’s absolutely worth the price. Yes, it's a bit pricy for the area, but once you take that first bite, you'll understand why. It’s a small, cozy spot so I definitely recommend coming early—we came on a Wednesday around 6pm and got seated right away. Perfect timing! Will definitely be back for another top-tier sushi experience.

Google
Mujiri is a decent place to get quality fish at reasonable prices. They had some options, like Ocean Trout and Atlantic Char, that you won't find at lower tier sushi restaurants. Though nothing really stood out as great. It was on par with other places I've been to. The staff is spot on with friendly and attentive service. Given how small the restaurant is, the service never felt rushed or chaotic. However, also because of how small the restaurant is, the atmosphere is not that great. Especially if you are seated next to a loud party like we were. All the diners are so close to each other that it is easy for loud conversations to ruin your experience. I was really looking forward to trying Mujiri, but I am sad to say I probably won't be back.

Google
My favorite sushi restaurant! I used to drive out to Emeryville to get their sushi. It's delicious and you can taste the freshness. So glad they opened a place closer to home. I ordered the nigiri combo to go and they had it ready when I got there. Wait staff are always friendly and helpful. I highly recommend them!

Google
Good quality sushi, and sashimi. Already tastes good without wasabi and soy sauce. Our server was excellent. The restaurant is small, only good for group up to 4 people. The only thing I didn't like is they provided the bill to you after you finished your meal. It made me feel that they want us to leave now. If they have customers waiting, I understand that, but they are not busy at that time.

Google
We had a delicious time trying out Mujiri in downtown Hayward for my husband's birthday! They do a 7-piece nigiri + 6-piece maki roll special for $25, which is a pretty good deal. Very fresh fish. I quite enjoyed my spicy tuna maki - no mayo sauce here! And the ume-shiso hosomaki, which is salted plum and mint leaf, was a flavor adventure! Will definitely go back. It's a small space, so reservations are recommended if you're dining in.

Google
Mujiri – Their combo offers incredible value! I visited their Berkeley location, and the quality of the nigiri was outstanding. Fresh, well-crafted, and definitely worth trying!

Google
This is a great place for an intimate date night. It's small, with about 5 tables and counter seating. Food is great! Menu is mostly nigiri and just a few simple rolls. Don't bother coming if you don't eat raw fish. Nigiri combo was great. Loved the spicy salmon roll. Wasabi looks and tastes legit..... Not the fake stuff.

Google
Finding a nice sushi place in Hayward has been a challenge, and this place rivals those nice sushi restaurants in SF. It started put as a takeout only place but has since opened up a small dining room with about 4-5 tables and a sushi bar that seats 6-7 people. This place is lnow for their high quality nigri combo, which comes with 7 non-repeated pieces of your choice from a rotating menu of fresh fish, some of which I believe comes directly from Japan, as well as a chef choice maki roll. Some of the choices include Toro (fatty bluefin tuna) and Kanpachi (Amberjack) Hotate (Hokkaido scallop) and Kurodai (black snapper), but they have different fish every week. Needless to say, everything was fresh and delicious, and at $25 per set, you really can't find a better deal! The sashimi combo is also very good. They do have some exclusive dine-in options as well. During our recent outing, we tried the chanwamushi, which is a steamed egg custard dish, and it was delicious. Overall, I highly recommend this place if you want high-quality sushi without the crazy rolls. Note for all the parents of little kids, this place does not have high chairs.

Yelp
Pro Tip: The Nigiri Combo is the best bang for your buck. If it's your first time dining in or taking out, definitely go straight for this and order the following: 1. Sake (Salmon) 2. Hamachi (Yellowtail) 3. Iwana (Artic Char) 4. Umi Masu (Ocean Trout) 5. Kanpachi (Amberjack) 6. Kurodai (Black Snapper) 7. Toro (Bluefin Fatty Tuna) These are the best options without any additional costs. If you want to get anything from the additional menu I would swap out the Toro for the Santa Barbara Uni or the Hokkaido Uni because those sourced fresh here and are bomb. Also please stop asking if there are baked rolls here. They do not serve anything baked and this may not be the place to bring your kids or friends who aren't familiar with raw fish.

Yelp
I had this place bookmarked for awhile, so I was glad that I finally got a chance to try Mujiri. The restaurant is charming, intimate, and cozy. Several tables and seating at the sushi bar. Not a good place for a party larger than 6. Soft house music is playing throughout the restaurant. One unisex restroom only. Chawanmushi: Japanese steamed egg served in a cup. Mixture flavor of dashi and house soy sauce. Contains shrimp and REAL crabmeat, chives, and topped with ikura. Nigiri Combo: chef's choice or your choice of 7 different fishes (they cannot be duplicate). Maguro (big eye tuna), Hamachi (yellowtail), Sake (salmon), Hotate (Hokkaido scallop), Umi Masu (ocean trout), Iwana (artic char), Toro (fatty bluefin tuna). It also comes with 1 chef's choice hosomaki. The fish was fresh on their house-flavored infused rice. The nigiri is on the smaller side. The service was attentive, polite, and nice. Support your local business. BTW, this was my 2000th review!

Yelp
Yes it's good. Yes it's fresh. Yes the take out box is fancy. It's one of two take out sushi I have thus far experienced serving their sushi rice similar to fancy omakase joints. HOWEVER, I did not appreciate how they gave me a salmon bomb literally. I intentionally ordered the salmon and shiso hosomaki separately based on the pictures and the hope they'll serve my favorite negi roll with the nigiri set. Thus, I intentionally did not select the saki/salmon nigiri since I thought I was reducing the chances of a salmon bomb on my plate. Boy, was I wrong. Therefore a major one star deduction for the lack of even trying to provide the customer with the chance of tasting a variety of fishes and flavors. I wanted to give three stars but I resisted. Brownie points for not giving ultra neon green wasabi. The server looked as if he was in ordinary clothing so I totally mistook him as a customer. Sketchy area. Super sketchy and very heavy door with lights as their sign (inside the window to the right) but when I went/when I drove by it wasn't turned on nor the open sign. I saw a white paper posted and I thought they relocated or something so I kept driving but grrrr you can't turn right after you see the wheel/mechanics shop on your right. But thankfully I saw street parking up ahead. If you're coming from the A street direction, Google maps will say "Montgomery Ave" but it's actually "Montgomery Street." 100% street parking. Will I come back? I would but I definitely will never order a separate side of any hosomaki roll ever again. And to anyone and everyone reading this, I highly recommend against ordering one too as you might risk the chance of them misunderstanding that's the type of fish you enjoy and therefore resulting as a bomb of it too on your plate. Very simple menu of nigiri, sashimi, hosomaki rolls, spicy rolls, and beverages.

Yelp
I love mujiri. This will be the second time I've visited this restaurant. I walked in without any reservation since I'm only by myself. If you have a group of more than 3 or 4 people I would definitely make reservation. I arrived right when they opened so no wait for me. I got my usual with some other addition to it since I was hungry. I always order the yuzu sparkling soda, that is my favorite. I then ordered the Nigiri Combo was amazing as always. The fish here is not overwhelmingly huge and it is fresh. It is very tasty. When you don't need soy sauce for your sushi, it's usually because the fish is of good quality. I ordered the squid ala carte and hamachi I believe. Both items were so good. Very good quality fish. For dessert the matcha cheesecake was really good and I had it with the green tea. I've enjoyed mujiri everytime I go there. I highly recommend them and their chefs are all amazing. Shout out to this crew.

Yelp
I haven't been this excited to try an East Bay sushi restaurant in a while. $25 nigiri combos with rave reviews?! Who can resist? We each ordered a nigiri set, shared a negihama roll, and followed up with à la carte scallop and toro nigiris. Sooo good! The fish was generous, fresh, melted in your mouth, and wasn't fishy at all. The rice was slightly brown and was on the dry side- yet didn't fall apart at all. The only criticisms I had was the location (Hayward isn't the greatest), and the small interior of the restaurant. Nevertheless- upon leaving, we both agreed we'd come back. Make a reservation, find parking at the lot across the street, and enjoy!
google avatar

Joanna F.

Yelp
Super good! Such good quality food, nice vibe inside. Get there early if you don't have a reservation! Outside very unassuming. The combo plate was perfect portion-wise but I don't know kind of expensive considering Hinata is right there, but maybe I'm biased because of the AYCE mindset. Really good quality, great for a fancy dinner!

Yelp
I love coming to Mujiri when I'm in the neighborhood! The restaurant is small, charming, and also pretty popular so there can be a wait, especially on Friday and Saturday nights. For a party of 6, we waited for about 15 minutes before being seated. While waiting we ran across the street to the brewery and got some beers, which was convenient. We ordered a fatty tuna, Omakase, and seaweed salad, and they did not disappoint! Each nigiri was perfectly portioned, and the quality of the fish was definitely there. Each fish had a buttery texture to it, and honestly I should've ordered two omakases when I was there because that's how good it was. This is probably my third time visiting, and I'm already thinking about the next time I'm coming back .

Yelp
Whenever I'm in the area, I try to make it an effort to pick up an order from Mujiri. Online ordering from their website makes it convenient for pickup. My go-to is the nigiri combo. The fish is fresh, staff friendly, and service efficient. I haven't dined indoors yet but the interior of the restaurant is a cozy atmosphere with both table and countertop seating available.
google avatar

Yelp
Authentic Japanese, the place was small but very cozy it reminded me of Japan sushi restaurants. The service was amazing and the food is a 100/10. Unbelievably delicious.
google avatar

Khiem N.

Yelp
This restaurant is a great package. The fish here is fresh and the service here is really helpful. They explain every fish on the combo to you and tell you the order they recommend you to eat it. Same with the sake, they have it all lined up on the order you should eat it. Seating here is limited. The normal nigiri combo is the most filling and the best bang for your buck. I wasn't a huge fan of the premium nigiri combo. They torch more of the fishes but the taste was not as crisp or profound. Sashimi combo was better for the higher price.
google avatar

Lauren M.

Yelp
Very fresh fish and a great, unique diversity of fish to choose from. Prompt service and everything was delicious. Good value. Will be back!
google avatar

Peggy C.

Yelp
This is my ABSOLUTE favorite sushi spot in Hayward, hands down! They are small but mighty. It's actually one of my favorite spots to go as a special treat, ie taking a friend out for a birthday lunch etc. While seating is limited, it's got a very chill vibe inside, the dim lighting and cozy corners, you do really feel like you're getting upscale sushi even if you're downtown Hayward around the corner from Cookies and a questionable adult shop. Parking is street or nearby lot (also questionable lot haha) but it is WORTH it for quality sushi. You can also order to go which I've done before but again, this is a special treat!
google avatar

Anh T.

Yelp
this was not the easiest to find since the exterior looks sort of abandoned. but don't worry because inside is a cute little sushi bar. you order on your phone through a QR code which was very convenient. and it was great that they let you choose your fish for the nigiri combo. $25 for the nigiri combo is such a good price. we also got the $35 sashimi combo. the only thing that was slightly annoying was their bar counters were really sticky. but i'd definitely come back here again.
google avatar

Benson Y.

Yelp
This place slaps. While it's not super spacious, it definitely feels roomier than the Oakland location. We ordered the Sashimi Combo and Nigiri Combo, and did a little switching up, but the chef's choice was also a decent selection. The presentation of the food was on point, and everything tasted fresh and delicious (also, I never had this type of seasoned rice before but it's a hit). The staff were really attentive, and even though there was a lot of construction outside on the street when I visited, the dark ambiance inside the restaurant set a nice mood to enjoy the meal. Plus, it's not overly pricey for the quality of sushi you get versus other sushi places in the bay. Definitely coming back for more.
google avatar

Alexis M.

Yelp
Mujiri is one of the most affordable omakase spots I've seen in the Bay Area! For $25, you get a 7 piece nigiri set and the chef's choice daily maki. I love that you can build your own nigiri box since I'm not a fan of raw scallop, and I was able to customize it the way I liked. The restaurant is a bit small, so I'm glad I made a reservation in advance. Once we ordered, it took a while for the food to come out, but I didn't mind because the presentation was beautiful and everything tasted delicious. My favorite piece was probably the black snapper. I'd highly recommend giving this place a try, and I'll definitely be back!
google avatar

Sirina L.

Yelp
First time having mujiri and I thought it was pretty solid! We went on a Thursday night and there was no wait. Menu is a qr menu and you order through the QR code but I wish the waiter explained that everyone can scan it and order on their own phone. At first thought it looked like everyone at the table had to order through one phone but that's not the case. The food itself was great. I ordered a nigiri combo for $25, great for a special dinner night out but wouldn't come to get it often as I prefer a combo of nigiri and sashimi rather than nigiri and maki as it had too much rice and I felt bloated after. Parking is relatively easy, we parked at the lot across the street. Would come back but not super often.
google avatar

Jessica C.

Yelp
Best sushi I've had in the bay and at a great price point. We got the regular nigiri combo, premium nigiri combo, sashimi combo, and a roll from the day's specials. Perfect amount of food for the 2 of us. Premium is worth the extra $$ because of the uni. But I'm good with the regular combo. It's a small intimate dining experience. We sat at the bar so got to see the sushi chefs making nigiris. Highly recommend!
google avatar

Kenny N.

Yelp
This spot is hands down one of the best sushi restaurants in the Bay Area for taste and value. Each nigiri is crafted with a lot of care using fresh seafood imported straight from Japan. Their uni and scallop was delicate and sweet. Paired with their house-made sushi rice, I was in heaven. It was absolute perfection. We tried both the regular nigiri omakase and premium nigiri omakase, and some items from their limited menu. I highly recommend getting their premium omakase set of nigiri, but you cannot go wrong with anything. My favorite piece of nigiri is either the amberjack or ootoro, which just melted in your mouth and had a hint of yuzu. The restaurant seats a very few number of people, which makes the experience more intimate and the service exceptional. I will definitely be back!

Yelp
After seeing Mujiri on social media for years since we were deep in the pandemic, it stayed on my bucket list for the longest time. I finally had a chance to go by for a dinner date with cousins. The place is small and intimate; either make a reservation or expect to wait for a bit (utilize Yelp Waitlist!). With 2-hour dining limits, they are doing their best to allow as many patrons to experience their food. We all ordered the Mujiri Combo - chef's choice 7 piece nigiri and 1 sushi roll. Hands down, AMAZING. You can tell right off the bat how fresh their fish is and how much care they put into each of their pieces. Literal poetry in a meal. We topped our dinner off with some warm sake and sake cocktails. The service was incredible; they continued to check on us throughout our meal and made sure our water cups were full while we continued to catch up over years of not seeing each other. We will be back! Street and lot parking are readily available all over the Downtown Hayward area; do a quick search of the area to see where to go!
google avatar

Ruth C.

Yelp
By far our most favorite sushi in east bay, and the other one is the Emeryville branch :) Every fish was so fresh and tasty. The sushi chefs are amazing! We were admiring how they diligently crafted this beautiful food art, tasting as good as they look! The restaurant is cozy just like their other branch. We were extremely lucky to be seated right away. We look forward to coming back soon!
google avatar

Daw M.

Yelp
Best portion for price, hands down. $25 for the set! Small and cozy little nook serving yummy nigiri. I finished the entire set, miso soup ($5) & chanwanmushi ($5) and it was so fulfilling. Parking sucks, all street parking. Fast friendly service. Thank you!
google avatar

Lisa N.

Yelp
While the place is quaint and unassuming from the exterior, the sushi is exceptional. I went with the chef's choice nigiri combo, and every piece was fresh and buttery. The seared pieces stood out to me with their smoky flavor. I ordered online and it was done before the estimated pickup time. For $25, I would consider it to be a bargain due to the high quality. I will definitely be back to try the sashimi combo. This place has quickly become one of my new favorite sushi spots!
google avatar

Yelp
Yes, I finally made it here! I guess we are finally branching out of San Leandro and Castro Valley and continuing to go south. Quality/Quantity - Wow, I mean wow. The quality of food here is amazing! The reviews are accurate. Today we got the following: Nigiri Combo - Maguro (big eye tuna), Hamachi (yellowtail), Sake (salmon), Kanpachi (amberjack), Kuroda (black snapper), Hotate (hokkaido scallop) and finally Toro (bluefin fatty tuna). All of which were so fresh, tender, and flavorful. Also good textures. Spicy Tuna Maki - This melted in our mouth! So tender and flavorful. Kanpyo Hosomaki - First time trying this. Pickled and dry gourd strips. Again, pretty good. Do keep in mind that you are here for quality, NOT quantity! We are light eaters, so just the right amount of food for us. Oh, and the ginger was so flavorful also. I had to ask for more. Sorry, no happy hour. Atmosphere - Very small local business. Not busy at all. Well, it is a late Tuesday night. Indoor seating only. Approximately 5-6 tables, and a small sushi bar seating area. Probably another 5-6 seats. Free 4 hour public parking around the corner. Clean unisex restroom, all the way in the back. But it was nice to walk by the open kitchen. Service - Good. QR code ordering, so almost self service. He did offer me an old paper menu, but gave the disclaimer that it may not be accurate. I made the QR code work... Price - $47 + tip. Reasonably priced for what we got. Owner Comment - Congrats on your success at this location since 2023. And your Oakland location since 2020.

Yelp
I'm a fan. I would like to come here more often. I came across Mujiri on Tiktok, and sent it to my friend. We decided on the Hayward location since it was between our houses. Mujiri is really close to Bart in downtown Hayward and is only a 10 min walk from the Hayward Bart station. The walk wasn't bad at all. Not dangerous. Very nice architecture. I arrived at Mujiri around 1:20PM on Saturday and it not crowded! I thought it would be due to the reviews and already had made a a reservation. My party and I each ordered a Nigiri Combo Set that came with Maki. The server kindly told me what each fish was and I took notes on what I liked: Salmon Yellowtail Amberjack Artic Char Black Snapper Scallop Toro Yellowtail Maki Thank you server, because I now know what fish I like. This is such a great deal, and I would highly recommend coming. I surprisingly liked this place more than Aji Kiji. Can't wait to come back. So worth.

Yelp
My husband and I had this spot bookmarked on our list to try for the longest time and finally was able to grab take-out today. We ordered through the website beforehand for convenient pick up. We each got the nigiri combo which we selected scallop, big eye tuna, iwana, umi masu, kanpachi, kurodai, and the toro nigiri. The combo also came with a hamachi maki roll (6 pieces). We also ordered the salmon & shiso hosomaki and the spicy tuna maki. Total with tax came out to $76. Pick up was efficient and the each piece of nigiri and maki was delicious. The fish was very fresh. Like many others have mentioned, the rice is already seasoned so there's no need to use additional soy sauce. My favorite was the Hokkaido scallop nigiri and the toro. The quality of the nigiri is definitely worth the price. We can't wait to come back to try out more nigiri and perhaps, dine-in in the future.
google avatar

Kaitlyn L.

Yelp
7 pieces of nigiri and 6 pieces of chef's choice maki... for less than $30?! So glad they have one in Hayward because I remember enjoying the Oakland location! I ordered for pickup at opening, and the order was ready in about 25 minutes. You can choose the 7 pieces of nigiri yourself. I chose: hamachi (yellow tail), salmon, iwanna (arctic char), umi masu (ocean trout), hotate (hokkaido scallop), ika (squid), and the toro (bluefin tuna) - In order from left to right in my photos. To go into depth, the must-get's are definitely the toro and hotate to make the meal worth. I wouldn't think to order iwanna or umi masu on a reg day, but I enjoy it every time. The Iwanna/arctic char was surprisingly a favorite for us. Ika was personal preference. The maki was also delicious and overall, made the meal the perfect amount of food for our lunch. They gave us containers with ginger/wasabi, soy sauce, chopsticks, and napkins. Server was super nice when I stopped by to pick it up, inside was fairly small but intimate in a welcoming way. Definitely a gem in the East Bay for reasonable omakase and a cute IG story post!
google avatar

Sarah T.

Yelp
Still the best sushi in the area and the only in the area worth a special trip if you don't live nearby The fish is both fresh and high quality. Presentation is nice both for takeout and dine in See my older review for other details.
google avatar

Alison K.

Yelp
Affordable (ish) sushi that's as close as you can get to a fancy shmancy omakase in Japan, without breaking your wallet. I've only ordered takeout from here so can't say much about the dine in experience. Though I do hear that it would get busy during rush hours. Be smart and order online ahead for pick up and have a picnic date somewhere close by lol. Or take it back to your house to enjoy. My boyfriend and I each got our own 7pc nigiri combo, and it was inhaled in seconds. Ok jk, minutes. And we shared the salmon shiso maki and spicy salmon maki. The fish is very fresh. My favorite was surprisingly the scallop. And I believe the ocean trout one but I'm not entirely sure because it looks like salmon but it's not lmao. & of course, the toro is always a banger. I saved that piece for last lol. The rice is also seasoned very well. It needed minimal to no soy sauce. Depending on your appetite, you can probably order about the same or maybe even more. As you wish. Our order total was around $75, which I think is not too shabby for this level quality of sushi in this economy. We will definitely have mujiri on our takeout rotation. And maybe even one day dine there for a date!

Yelp
Finally tried Mujiri after months of living in Hayward and it did not disappoint! We ordered online through DoorDash and picked up at the storefront. Parking is easy if you park off the lot near Main Street. It was surprisingly not too busy inside on the Friday night when we picked up, but I've seen the pickup wait time get very long on DoorDash which is what deterred us from trying this place sooner. The restaurant interior is small and dim. I would only recommend coming here by yourself or with one other person - definitely not a place for groups. We ordered the nigiri combo and the salmon and shiso hosomaki. Everything was fresh and delicious, and I like that you can customize the combo with your choice of nigiris. Highly recommend Mujiri for sushi in the Hayward area! This will be our new go to spot near home from now on.

Yelp
This is a little unique sushi place with a reasonable price tag Small warm and cozy sushi restaurant, with no kitchen food..... and pretty much Nigiri and Sashimi only...... Dnt normally eat rice but their sushi is legit..... not only fish is fresh, and the sushi rice is well balanced...... Service was also up to the par..... never needed to ask to refill on anything..... Recommended to make reservation via thier website!

Yelp
My daughter and I came in randomly last Tuesday night. The dining area was small and minimal, but with a lot of character. Intimate with dim lighting and overall a chill, relaxing space. The quality of the fish was... wow! The rice seasoning was delicious and the fish was fresh. We were both amazed by the food. It is absolutely worth the price. The menu is pretty simple, but they craft their sushi so well, they don't need extra offerings. Quality over quantity is definitely present. The service was quick, even with only 1 server. I think it was a full house when we were seated. We didn't have to wait long for our food, and we enjoyed just being there and eating. We'll return soon!
google avatar

Belinda T.

Yelp
Not a place you want to come to if you are hungry unless you are rich. Also, not a place to come if you have a huge party, the actual location is fairly intimate and the wait could be a while. The takeout is super cute though. So pre-order online and go on the picnic to the park or somewhere nearby. However, this isn't your frills of fancy rolls and deep-fried items. You definitely come here to taste the fish. The fish is fresh and buttery. We opted for a nigiri box and a sashimi box and a Yuzu cheesecake. The fish in both boxes were delicious and expertly cut. The soy sauce was hardly needed because it was so flavorful. Next time we'll skip they use a cheesecake. It was just OK and for that price. It was a tiny slice. This combo ran us about $75 before tip.

Yelp
This is the place to go if you're looking for quality omakase with the best price you can get in the bay. Their 7 piece omakase where you get to choose which 7 pieces you want with options to upgrade is unbeatable. I love being able to customize and the set also comes with a maki roll. I've also tried their other rolls and dishes and all were delicious and filling. I love that they season their rice and that the sushi comes out at the perfect temperature. Their staff is also super helpful and friendly. The only downside is parking can be tough. There's street parking and a lot across the street. The restaurant is also small so if you want to avoid waiting then call ahead and reserve a table!
google avatar

Nurbek T.

Yelp
Probably the best sushi place in the Bay Area for the price. Tuna belly hand rolls are so delicious
google avatar

Jacky K C.

Yelp
Complete respect and admiration for serving only traditional nigiri and sashimi. It's a sigh of relief when I don't see lion king roll or California roll in the menu. 0% gimmick, 100% quality. 99% of the fake sushi places should learn from them. The temperature of the fish was perfect. You know they are legit when they use 赤醋 in their sushi rice. This is pretty much what you get at omakase places. Excellent service and good sake selection.

Yelp
Solid sushi spot in Hayward. I've been here a couple of times and haven't had a bad experience. I went recently for their valentines pre fix omakase and it was definitely unique. Food -- 9/10 Nigiri Combo Set has great variety for the price. The iwana (artic char) was my favorite. Toro is always good. Appetizers I've tried so far were ok (chawanmushi and seaweed salad). I would stick to just nigiri. Valentines pre fix menu was definitely outside of my comfort zone. I'm glad I was able to try some unique delicacies but my favorites of the night were the nigiri's on their standard menu. Service -- 10/10 Great service all around. Yelp
Amazing service & team! I had to call in to adjust my reservation. They were very nice about it! The indoor dining is a very tight and intimate space. Not great for parties 4+ but I do think it's perfect for date nights! The nigiris were amazing!!! & their yuzu cocktail is a must get! We had to basically try everything on the menu because everything was tasting so fresh and delicious! I love the way the sushi chefs would pair sauces and garnishes on some of the rolls and nigiri! I am absolutely a fan of this restaurant, I just wish we had one closer to the South Bay!

Yelp
I got the nigiri combo with chef's choice hosomaki. For the price, the nigiri combo and roll are a very solid deal for the quality, especially when you can pick the nigiri you like. There are other places that have a nigiri and roll combo for similar prices, but they tend to be less flexible on what you're going to get (you can just pick the ones you want when ordering via QR code here). Those other places might let you pick the roll instead, but that tends to also be limited to a spicy tuna roll, california roll, etc. Nigiri Combo and Chef's Choice Hosomaki: - maguro, hamachi, sake, umi masu - decent/good - kurodai - the dark horse of the bunch, the sear was pretty strong and led to a very smoky flavor. Not sure how others would feel about this, but I loved this one - hotate - sweet but somewhat fishy, I've had better but still good - toro - rich as expected - chef's choice hosomaki (hamachi) - very good, nori was fragrant After the nigiri combo, I ordered an additional negitoro hosomaki which was pretty good, but I wouldn't get it again just due to the inherently price of toro. I will definitely go back here when I'm in the mood for nigiri and makizushi. The fish is good, but the rice is also good and seasoned properly. I can't identify if they're using akazu (vinegar) as mentioned in recent review because I'm too noob and akazu is typically too expensive for me though.

Yelp
All I can say is.... GO TRY IT! When I tell you that that was probably the most raw fish I've ever had in one sitting, you probably wouldn't believe me! I tend to gross myself out and overthink about the texture and the taste of the raw fish, "is it going to be too fishy? Is the texture too slimey and chewy?" Nope not at all!! Every single nigiri I had did not taste fishy at all and was really good and fresh! AND FOR $25 minimum? Come on, you really can not go wrong with that price!! The restaurant is small, really small, they do take reservations but it seems like if you don't get there, I'd say 10-20 mins before your reservation time, you'll probably be waiting past your reservation time. They do take walk ins as well, which is what my husband and I did. We both got the nigiri set which came with 7 pieces and a hosomaki( I think that's what they call it) roll on the side. You can opt for chef's choice nigiri or choose your 7, which is what we both did! We also ordered a drink each, I got their yuzu highball and it was delicious! There was only 1 server tending to all the tables but he was great! Our nigiri set did take a bit to come out but we didn't care too much since it was delicious and it was our first night out in a LONG while after having 2 kids now lol. But overall, 10/10 we'd definitely be back. I'd probably come a bit before dinner time rush, like 530-6, we got seated pretty quickly!

Yelp
Finally got the chance to try Mujiri in Hayward! It's a small, tucked-away spot--we almost missed it. The interior is quite dark, which adds a bit of an intimate vibe. We ordered the nigiri combo, which includes 7 pieces of sushi and a roll for just $25--a total steal for the quality. The fish was incredibly fresh and flavorful. I also had the chawanmushi, which was warm, comforting, and topped with delicious crab. A pleasant surprise was finding they serve my favorite sake, Dassai 23! The combination of high-quality ingredients and fair pricing makes this place a gem. I'll definitely be back!

Yelp
ordered takeout for lunch. It was pretty good, but not my favorite. I noticed that there were some tables inside it's quite small. It was around 1pm and there wasn't much people inside. The sushi tasted alright to me, the fish wasn't as fresh and what I had at other spots.

Yelp
Mujiri might be the best sushi restaurant in Hayward at the moment. When I say sushi I'm not talking about the typical lion king rolls or caterpillar rolls. They make fresh nigiri rolls and serve fresh sashimi here. Nothing but fresh simple and good quality ingredients. Who knew there would be a gem tucked away in Hayward next to a auto shop. The restaurant is perfect for a date night or even a solo treat yourself evening. I think the max capacity in there is around 20 people. Either sit at the bar and chat with the chefs or crammed in the corner table that can fit 4 max. A friend recommended this restaurant and told us they import their fish daily from Japan. Which I don't think is very common with a lot of Japanese restaurants in the Bay Area. I doubt the fish on your Lion King is imported from Japan. The menu here is simple. They serve nigiri, sashimi and a variety of maki rolls. It might sound small but it's actually a vast selection. Also a nigiri combo for $25 is pretty good deal. That's a price I didn't pass up. First bite and you can tell the quality is up to par. Every piece tasted fresh and the sushi rice is addicting. In my opinion, soy sauce is not needed here. The flavor from just the fish and rice alone is enough. So high quality food and great staffs all around. I will be back for another meal.

Yelp
Delicious and authentic sushi in Hayward? YES!! Caught up with an old friend here for dinner on a recently Tuesday evening. We got here a few minutes after opening and half the tables were already taken with a couple others reserved. We were fortunate that there was one open table for us besides at the sushi bar. The restaurant sports a small and intimate setting with just a handful of tables plus seating at the bar. There's a QR code on the table where you place your order. Multiple people in your party can scan the same code and add items to the "single tab/order". You pay for the meal at the end through your waiter or waitress and not online. We ordered two rounds of food which included 11 pairs of nigiri and a spicy tuna roll. The wall displayed a handwritten menu of fresh fish from Japan, offering unique options we hadn't tried before. All which could be ordered via the online menu. The fish was fresh and was presented in a suggested order from which nigiri to start and end with. Service was attentive and welcoming. I also ordered their two vegetarian sushis togo and they were packaged in a cool wooden tray with a plastic cover. Great presentation even for a to-go order! Street parking can be tough but there is a public lot directly across the street with at least 30-40 spaces. I can't wait to come back...but this time I'll make a reservation.

Yelp
Definitely a hole in the wall and can be hard to miss! It's a small Japanese restaurant so I recommend making reservations ahead of time. You order through a QR code on your table. Their $25 nigiri combo is such a steal! You're also able to select which nigiris you want for your set. I've never had Arctic Char and it was so flavorful. Every nigiri piece just melts in your mouth!

Yelp
I discovered Mujiri during the pandemic is it's awesome to see that their still going strong. In the most recent visit, I went two nigiri combo sets, and every piece was fresh, fatty fish sliced with precision and paired with rice that was really well made. What stood out was the seasoning for the rice. They seem to be using akazu, a japanese rice vinegar that you usual see utilized at much more expensive sushi restaurants. To experience that flavor here at this price point fantastic. The restaurant space is small and intimate. Fortunately, it doesn't seem to get as overcrowded like the Oakand location so I actually prefer this spot. The shop is part of this larger dt square area that can get crazy so check if there are any local events before heading out as parking can become a nightmare. Our dine in order was pretty simple but service was great overall. The staff were friendly, attentive. We dined in once, did takeout the other times and the quality held up both ways. If you're looking for fresh, well-crafted sushi with a touch of upscale technique but without the upscale bill, Mujiri should be on your list.

Yelp
Finally checked this place off my food list and it was everything I imagined! Great sushi at a great price! The prices can't be beat for the quality and amount of food you get! $25 for 7 piece nigiri and a chef choice maki? YES PLEASE. The warm rice was lightly seasoned paired with the buttery fish that just embraces each other. After devouring my nigiri combo, I ordered the sashimi combo as well. You get 16 piece for only $35! I would say that the sashimi cuts are on the thinner side but in this economy, this is still a steal. Presentation of the food was beautiful as it really showcase the effort being put into making our food. I got bar seating so I have the opportunity to see the care that the chefs put into making each piece. The restaurant seems a bit tucked away since there is a lot of road work happening outside the building. The interior has clean minimalist decor (black walls + dim warm lighting) which makes me feel like I'm dining in the alley way of Japan. The restaurant is pretty small so try to make a reservation if you can! Customer service: friendly but since we were sitting at the corner at the bar, it was a little difficult to get the attention of the server to place our order. Final verdict, this has now become one of my favorite places to grab sushi! I just wish that it was little closer to home so that I can come here on a weekly basis lol.

Yelp
My go to place to bring friends, a night out, or to pop in and grab a solo bite to eat. I live nearby so this is a great addition to the neighborhood without having to drive a ridiculous distance for good sushi. I have also ordered a crazy amount of take out from here too. It's always a hit and still fresh by the time I get home. Service can be a little hit or miss but it depends on how busy they are. The one guy who runs the host stand/waiter is great and always quick. My go to is their nigiri combo which comes with 7 pieces of fish and a hosomaki. I also love their spicy salmon roll.

Yelp
I was craving some nigiri and had to stop by for the 7 piece nigiri + maki combo ($25). I went for hamachi, toro, black snapper, amberjack, ocean trout, arctic char, and hokkaido scallop. The maki rolls is the chef's choice and seemed to be hamachi. I ordered for takeout so I can't comment on dining in, though the restaurant is on the smaller side. I would say the pieces are on the smaller side, but are higher quality than most. I love the fact that you can taste the freshness of the fish and that each nigiri is unique. They share the same rice base (I think) and don't need any additional sauce in my opinion and I enjoy that you can choose the nigiri you want. The nigiri and maki make for a pretty filling meal, though I'm always dying for more! My favorite was the hamachi, toro, and black snapper but they were all delicious. The price and quality has held steady even with other places increasing so I'm really happy that Hayward has such a great sushi spot. I can't wait to get more.
