Visited Mukai Shibuya ended up being one of the sweetest surprises of my trip. The restaurant is inside a traditional Japanese-style house, and there’s even a table that looks out to a little garden so peaceful in the middle of Shibuya. I ordered their donburi and loved how the purple rice, negitoro, uni, and ikura all came together in such a clean, balanced way. But the part that stayed with me the most was the owner. He was incredibly kind and thoughtful, the type of warm service that makes you feel genuinely cared for. I left feeling full, happy, and honestly a bit touched. A place I’d come back to without thinking twice.

First time visiting Mukai and I really enjoyed everything here! There was only a short line when I arrived and everyone was queuing quietly. Loved the interior of the establishment and I liked that you have to remove your shoes before entering 😆 there’s even a small backyard if you’re lucky to get the outdoor seat. Everything was fresh and good, will definitely revisit the next time I’m in Tokyo again! 🤭

We Love love love the atmosphere and food and staff! There was one party ahead of us and we got seated after less than 10 minutes wait. We were lucky we got seated outside. Everyone was super friendly, food was delicious and good value for money. The ochazuke at the end made it extra special. Will recommend and come back!

YESSS I LOVE MUKAIIII the seafood they used was actually the freshest of the fresh, i also liked how customizable everything was!! i opted to get mixed grain over white rice and it was genuinely such a good decision omggg 😋😋😋 the staff were really accommodating i felt so welcomed 🥹🥹 also DO NOT SKIMP OUT OF THE OCHAZUKE IT IS SO GOOD.

If you're craving kaisendon, Mukai is a great place to go. A bit of a walk from Shibuya station, the restaurant is located in a quaint home. The interior and dining room is very cute and all tatami mats. The tuna, roe, and uni are all delicious and generously served. The homemade dashi they provide is super tasty to finish off the meal but can also be very fishy for some. They do provide hot water instead of dashi if you find their dashi overpowering. Be aware, they are cash only but are very much worth a visit!

If you’re a tuna lover, Mukai is absolutely unmissable! The quality of the fish and the way everything comes together in each bowl was incredible — easily one of the best meals I had in Tokyo. When I went, the line was about an hour long, but it was so worth the wait. This was one of the places I had planned for in advance, and I’m so glad I did. Honestly, if I come back to Tokyo, Mukai will be on my list again without a doubt. I loved it sooooooo much! 💕 tip: cash only, so be sure to come prepared

Mukai is probably not a place you want to welcome others, not because the food is bad, but because the sitting space is awfully cramped. It’s fine to sit on the floor, but it feels like it was meant to be some Edo-jidai punishment for the sake of authenticity. Food itself was good though, fresh and of great value. However, because of how cramped the seating conditions were, I could not properly enjoy the rice bowl. Moreover, the dashi broth was placed in a sharing zone which was difficult to access, coupled with the sitting conditions made it a struggle. While it might be worth trying once, I would probably not go back again.

One of the best meals I had while in Tokyo! Everything was so customizable so you can curate the perfect bowl for yourself. The space was quaint and precious, I felt like I was eating in a sweet family’s home! It was the cherry on top. Cash only so just come prepared
