Mulkirigala Ancient Temple in Sri Lanka is an awe-inspiring site rich in history and spirituality. Carved into a massive rock, the temple features intricate statues, ancient frescoes, and inscriptions that reflect centuries of cultural heritage. Climbing to the top of the rock rewards visitors with a breathtaking scenic view of lush green landscapes stretching to the horizon. The combination of historical depth and natural beauty makes Mulkirigala a must-visit for anyone interested in Sri Lanka’s ancient roots and stunning landscapes.

Beautiful views and not crowded at all. If you go, please bring some food. There are street dogs living at the temple entrance and also a really sweet, poor street dog couple with a puppy living inside the temple grounds next to the police post. They approached us because they were obviously hungry and we felt so bad we didn't have any food to give them and there is no place to buy food in walking distance. Thank you so much for helping ❤️ I wouldn't recommend to visit the temple on a rainy day, the stairs are steep and look like they can become very slippery when wet. Be aware: At the entrance there was a quite intrusive local who immediatly came to us, started talking and walking with us an tried to trick us into using his services as a guide (without openly offering them as such). When we asked, he named a price of 2000 rs and when we told him that we would rather visit the temple by ourselves he left us alone. It just wasn't a very nice way of him trying to make business.

Mulkirigala Raja Maha Viharaya rises about 676 feet from the surrounding land mass. There are seven cave temples situated in five Terraced areas of different altitudes. They are the Lower Terrace (Patha Maluwa), Bo Tree Terrace ( Bodhi Maluwa). Great King's Temple Terrace ( Raja Maha Vihara Maluwa), Upper Bo Tree Terrace (Uda Bodhi Maluwa) and Chetiya Terrace (Chaitya Maluwa). These terraces can be accessed comfortably through well paved granite paths and steps going right upto the Dagoba Terrace. The temple can be reached coming along Beliatta -Weeraketiya main road and turning off at Mulkirigala Junction. The temple is situated 2 kM from the Mulkirigala Junction. If you are traveling through the expressway, take your exit from Beliatta Interchange. This is one of the unique temples and has a great historical value. It has more than 500 steps in total.

Mulkirigala - Little Sigiriya.. ⛰☸️🙏 Mulkirigala Rock Temple Today we are not going to talk about Sigiriya but about little Sigiriya... To explain further, about the cave temple complex known by the nicknames Mulgirigala, Mulkirigala, Seagiri, Muwathitigala, Mulagiriya... This temple is called Punchi Sigiriya because this temple is built on a rock like Sigiriya. BC History proves that it was created in 2-3 centuries... This is how the name Mulkirigala came to this temple. It is said in one story that this stone was shown to the king by a Vedda who met him when he was hunting, and said that it is suitable to build a temple here, and it broke with the sound of "Moo Kiw Gala" and then became Mulkirigala.... This is also depicted in one of the paintings in the Mulkirigala temple. The Mulgirigala temple was built around a 350 feet high rock... The Buddha statues and cave temples here are believed to have been built earlier by kings like Dutugemunu, Agbo, Dhatusena, and Mulava, who was a minister of King Waragamba... It is also mentioned that the Keerthi Sri Rajasingha kings have rediscovered and restored it when it was overgrown with weeds. This cave temple complex consists of seven cave temples... Each of these caves has a huge reclining Buddha statue and many sitting/standing statues.... do you know The rock where the cave temple is located is huge... The temple complex can be seen as if it extends from the ground to the top... It is arranged as lower courtyard, middle courtyard and upper courtyard. If you want to enjoy the uniqueness here, you must go... This temple has many paintings belonging to the art tradition of the Kandy era. Mulgirigala Temple is a Buddhist shrine that attracts the attention of many pilgrims in the southern town of Ruhunu. This is how it goes here from the Mulkirigala junction on the Beliatta - Weerakitya road, after about a mile on the Mulkirigala - Makewala road, you will find the entrance road to the Mulkirigala temple...
