The 15 Best Restaurants in Lawrence, Home of the University of Kansas

"Munchers Bakery has been providing students and townies with sugary treats since 1989. Specializing in doughnuts, cakes, and cookies, the shop is open 24/7 to satisfy midnight or early morning cravings. While everything is good, the cream cheese doughnuts are truly special: airy, sweet dough filled with a layer of tangy cream cheese and topped with vanilla or strawberry glaze." - Erin Socha

Google
We had Munchers as the dessert option for our October 2024 wedding. It was easy to place the larger order in-store & coordinate having our planner pick them up her way to the venue. The doughnuts were absolutely delicious and all of our guests raved about them! Munchers always has been and will continue to be the best. You just can't beat the cream cheese & strawberry cream cheese doughnuts.

Google
Best bakery in town, if not the state! The best thing about it is that it's a family- run shop. I love the cream cheese donuts and orange mini cinnis! I've lived in Lawrence KS my whole life and absolutely NOTHING has changed about the quality of this bakery. A cute shop across from the bowling alley and a bar and grill. Most of the staff are very friendly.

Google
This place is AMAZING I absolutely recommend this place it's so good and extremely affordable I got the little cinnamon rolls, apple strudel and the chocolate filled long john so good I would definitely go here again

Google
Munchers Bakery is very bright and open with 2 large amazing murals inside. There is a wide selection of bakery goods from cakes to donuts, cookies to brownies and more. This was our first time here and the bakery goods were pretty good. I was a disappointed with the cookies as they tasted dried out. But everything else we got was ok.

As soon as you walk, in this place smells just like you hoped it would, baked goods and love. The people that work there are friendly. The goods you find are spot on, everything you hoped they'd be. Delicious. The strawberry cream cheese donuts are one of my family's favorites! Highly recommend.

Another staple of Lawrence, after a long night of... studying, head on over to Munchers Bakery for an incredible selection of donuts, pastries, cakes, and cookies. The pecan sandies and orange rolls are among my favorites, but it's really impossible to go wrong, no matter what you get. Open all night and always ready to welcome you in, this is a must visit.

Google
Always a must when I’m in Lawrence. Their donuts are one-of-a-kind, and always delicious! I always bring back a box of donuts for my friends and they tell me that they finally understand my passion for Munchers.

Yelp
When I first came to the area, I was told that I needed to visit Munchers to get some donuts. Well, in fact it was the first thing we "had to do" after a late night out. We had to visit this hole in the wall donut place off Iowa and 9th st... I was dubious. And in fact the place looks like it hasn't been updated since the 90s. There were a lot of empty racks where donuts had been earlier in the day, and the guy working the counter looked impatient that we stumbled in at 1am or whatever time it was. He curtly answered our questions and efficiently moved around to get the pastries we wanted, and we were out of there so fast I thought we might run into ourselves coming in! Gotta say... the pastries were good. I learned that basically you pick whatever is available, unless you get there in the morning when everything is available! And it has started a whole thing with us. Anytime we are in Lawrence (literally anytime, 24x7) and get a sugar craving, we dart over there. Once (1 time), it was closed for some family emergency. But pretty much a 24x7 place to get your donut and pastry fix.

Yelp
Man, who didn't pay the fruit filling guy? I remember when I was a young, strapping Jayhawk, I'd go in here at 1 in the A.M. and I'd have a strudel and a fritter, and would be DELIGHTED to nearly eat a full apple in the process with as much as the saints of old decided to inject into these wonderful concoctions. Boy, have times changed! This was little more than sugar caked on sugar, with 3 pieces of apple per near $2 item. Has inflation hit that hard? Listen, let me know if you need apples; I got a guy, I can get as many apples as you can carry. Good deal too, just let me know. This got me wondering if the wonder years of collegiate yore are more imaginative than I let on to myself. I remember the excitement of KU, and the donuts to follow. I make it a point anytime I'm grazing the myelin sheath of Lawrence, I do right by my past to head 3 miles from any direction to acquire a box of heart attack memory from my alma donut mater. I think I'll give us some space. We need it. My heart needs it after that sugar explosion. Subtly in food is desired. Quit paying the sugar guy, and start paying the apple guy again. Like I said, I'll get ol' Johnny Appleseed to swing by, just let me know.

Yelp
Visited Munchers Bakery after seeking donuts at Lawrence's Farmers Market on 7/13/24. Munchers was fully stocked in the morning around 8:00AM. Tried the cream cheese rolls based on the Yelp comments, as well as the strawberry cream cheese rolls. The rolls are filled with simple vanilla cream cheese mixture. They ice the rolls with a super sweet glaze; vanilla or strawberry. In our opinion, the glaze was too sweet. We also had apple fritters, orange danish rolls and cinnamon rolls. They looked great, but I didn't get to taste any of them. To top off the dozen pastries, I had a simple glazed, yeast donut as they are very telling of the other items. The glazed donut wasn't very good. Not light or airy and it didn't have much flavor.

Yelp
It was 9pm on a Thursday night and we were craving donuts!! Specifically a glazed twisty and a chocolate covered donut. Nothing special, just the basics! We found Munchers Bakery opened 24 hours and so we called first to make sure. We got there and they weren't too busy. They still had a good variety to select from. They weren't fresh, of course because it's late. However, we were satisfied. Inside looked clean and in place. Overall experience was great! Most likely will be back!

Yelp
Beat cinnamon rolls in town. Only place to get mini cinnamon rolls too. A must visit in LFK

Yelp
Do not eat at munchers, unless you want to be addicted to their pastries, cookies and cakes. WOW! Kinda scared that I found this place. The goodies are as beautiful as they are delicious and this place is open 24 hours a day. That could be really DANGEROUS for your waistline. The counter service is quick & efficient, and the prices are great! Highly recommended.

Yelp
The cream cheese donuts are just amazing! No donut is good for you but these make life a little happier for a bit. What sets this place above the rest is the different options like the cream cheese rolls and orange danish rolls. Served by ladies who know what tastes good & they are so polite

Yelp
Munchers is one of the things in Lawrence that defines the town for me. Any time I'm in the neighborhood I have to swing by for a cream cheese donut fix. Often chocolate croissants and cinnamon rolls get added to my order too. I'm more of a walkin customer who carries his purchases out in a paper bag, but they make some amazing looking cakes and and can handle large orders if your the bakery boxes type of buyer.

Yelp
We were recently in Lawrence for a college visit and decided to try Munchers Bakery. It was late afternoon and not at all busy - 2 people were sitting at a table and no one was in line. There were quite a few items available, so lack of selection isn't the reason for my poor review. To say the gentleman at the counter taking our order was rude would be an understatement. He was unwelcoming, hateful, and barely spoke. It was uncomfortable enough that we almost turned around and walked out but didn't (probably should have!) The donuts and cupcakes were mediocre. The staff member we encountered would have ruined the experience matter how great the product was.

Yelp
We are from Oklahoma traveled to Lawrence Kansas for my Sons track meet. My husbands birthday is today and we wanted to celebrate with him so my son went to Munchers to find a chocolate chocolate cake. We tried to find a restaurant that had chocolate cake but no one served it. I am so glad we decided to get this cake it was super delicious!! They are open 24 hrs a day so if your in a pinch they will save the day!!

Yelp
I have never been to a bakery this good for this cheap. We went around 10:30 am on a Sunday. The place was pretty full and for good reason. We got a snickerdoodle cookie, a mini orange roll, an apple fritter, and a strawberry cream cheese donut. The total was under $4! For some reason, the apple fritter has become the measuring stick with which I will gauge a bakery's ability. Their apple fritter lacked the usual apple chunks present in most cases. But, it was still quite good. I will absolutely go back whenever I'm in the mood for a very cheap, very fast pastry.

Yelp
Classic. The cream cheese donuts are so damn good. Only "complaint" would be that I wish they had better coffee.

L R.

Yelp
The cream cheese donuts are fabulous! To die for! However, the bald headed gentleman that works there is flat out rude. He is never friendly and doesn't need to work with people.

Sana T.

Yelp
Nice place. Home feeling with the lights and wooden seats. Service is well. Someone's there at the cash register to help out. You tell them which donuts or cakes you want and they put it in a bag for you. Drinks also available. Milk, pepsi, etc. Variety of fresh donuts.

Levi G.

Yelp
Every time I visit Lawrence I have to get a least a half dozen of these cream cheese donuts they are amazing and out of this world wish they would expand to olathe or even Kansas City

Yelp
My first time at Munchers it smelt really good inside. The prices were cheap and the food there looked delicious. But there were some serious problems I experienced. First of all, my server seemed to serve me in a rushed and uncomfortable way. I didn't know all of what I wanted to order since there are so many choices to look at when at the front, but she asked if I wanted a bag or a box, but I had know idea what I would need because of what I formally mentioned. I saw a doughnut that I wanted and saw that the sign closest in front of it said Sugar Cake Doughnut, so I said that I wanted the sugar cake doughnut. The server reached for another doughnut on the opposite side of the one I wanted, so I had to point out and clarify to her which type of doughnut I wanted. Then she pulled out the one that I wanted and said that it was the actually the Blueberry doughnut. So that was frustrating how the labeling of the doughnuts on display were way off. And another problem, perhaps the biggest, was that when she grabbed the Blueberry doughnut for me, it was with her bare fingers! Yeah, she had a parchment paper sheet in her hand too but it was crumbled up and not really being used to grab the doughnut with. It was quite unappetizing to watch my food get handled in such an unsanitary way. Waste of money.

Yelp
This place is so nostalgic for me because I graduated from KU and went here a lot as a student. I just went back this past weekend while on a weekend trip to Lawrence and was so happy to find it was still the same great munchers I know and love! Best doughnuts in my opinion? Cream cheese, blueberry fritter, strawberry knot, and their cream cheese danish. Thanks for having me back and please don't ever change! :)

Yelp
At the outset of the current Coronavirus pandemic, panic set in across Lawrence as the citizens here and from surrounding communities were faced with the worst possible scenario: we would be without Munchers cream cheese filled donuts until they re-opened. People started frequenting their Facebook page, even causing them to remark that the shutdown had created the biggest ever increase in Likes. And finally, when it was announced they'd re-open for carry-out, we collectively breathed a sigh of relief. Shortly thereafter I entered, and there they were, and I swear their was a glowing light around them in the case, and angels were singing. Or was that the Muzak? The horrible suffering ended, we sank our teeth into one and all was right. As I said in my 2013 review, everything you ever had here, it's still in the same place in the same case for display, just like it was when I walked in the door for the first time in 1983. They taste the same, they look the same, the place is frozen in time, and it gets no better than this. I wonder how many hundreds of employees have worked here since I first entered, and yet, nothing ever changes. Whoever is responsible for this, and the cream cheese filled donuts, genius. That, my friends, is what makes this place special. So at 8:30 on a Monday evening and couple of orange minis in my stomach, the cream cheese filled donuts await morning with a fresh cup of world class black coffee. Awaking to these treats during this crisis, that's the best revenge for what we must endure.

Yelp
Strawberry cream cheese donut is the best donut in the state. Old school family business, friendly and fast.

Yelp
I get why this place is popular in a college town. 24/7 donut shop with coffee and wifi. I'm thrilled about the hours, the service was great. The guy behind the counter was kind and fast. The donuts them selves were pretty good, but they were just covered in sugary glaze. Again, I would have loved this as a college student, as an adult, not as much. I would say there was a tiny bit of strawberry flavor in the twist and no apple at all in the fritter. It was mostly cinnamon. I was really bummed about that. I love a craggy gooey apple fritter. The chocolate cheesecake tasted good, but had lumps of cream cheese in it that were unmixed. A little bit more homemade than I was looking for in a bakery.

Mustafa Y.

Yelp
Very strange way of serving it's customers. No greatings or checking if I am done with my order. The worst part is turning his back even before I said good night or tell of I want my receipt after the payment. Terrible business practices.

Brooklyn H.

Yelp
Customer service was horrible AND i saw a cockroach run across the table. Definitely not the type of person to write a review but i'm not a fan of rude people. Cupcake tasted like a run over squirrel and the cream puff was disgusting. I would have not wrote this review but the guy at the counter was extremely rude.

Yelp
After living in Lawrence more than 3 years, and living next to The Merc Co+op it would be a shame if I didn't try this Bakery. I heard all this commotion about these infamous "strawberry cream cheese" donuts. Although I wanted to be a rebel and get the regular cream cheese donut, but I'm so glad I didn't! Believe the hype over the strawberry cream cheese donut!!! I honestly thought it would be too sweet and overpowering but the filling is light and has just the right amount. The original glazed donut was regular, but aren't they all? The apple fritter isn't what I'm used to, but everyone has their way of making recipes their own. I read other reviews about the cleanliness or how they should remodel, but I personally like the 70s vibe I get from here. It's amazing they stay open 24/7, and even more ironic their business name is Munchers. I'll be stopping by more often when I get the munchies or a craving for something sweet.

Lee P.

Yelp
We love Munchers Bakery, food was awesome! Service was great and friendly. Love the atmosphere and smell of fresh baked donuts.

Justin S.

Yelp
I have recently had two negative experiences at Munchers. On both occasions, employees have been rude, the pastries and baked goods were either incorrect based on item description, or stale.

Clovis S.

Yelp
Excellent baked goods, but service sucks. Was in there tonight and orded about 45 dollars worth of baked goods. Asked clerk to read order back, and he refused. This would have earned him about a ten buck tip had he not been a jerk. As it was, no tip, and I almost just walked and left it there. The doughnuts were excellent, so I guess they think tjis entitles them to get away with crappy service.

Yelp
My favorite place to get donuts in the greater Kansas City area! I will make a trip out to Lawrence just for these donuts. Cream cheese donuts are their specialty and a must-try! The strawberry cream cheese donut is my go-to every time. The plain cream cheese donut is great as well and tastes like a toaster strudel. Their plain glazed is decent, but if you're making the trip out, I recommend going with a specialty donut instead. While I definitely prefer some of their donuts over others (blueberry , you really can't go wrong here. They used to be open 24/7 before COVID. They may have reduced their hours during this time, but I know they still have much longer hours than most donut shops. If you haven't tried Munchers, you're missing out!

Marie S.

Yelp
Underwhelmed. The glazed donut was not even remotely warm. In fact, it seemed stale. I much preferred the old Joe's donuts on 9th Street that always had hot, melt in your mouth fresh glazed donuts!
google avatar

Michael C.

Yelp
Wonderful selection of delicious specialty baked goods very fairly priced. Eclairs were so good

Quinn T.

Yelp
absolutely delicious the classic glazed donut is the best veryyy addictive some of the best donuts in town

Jameson C.

Yelp
Munchers Bakery is like a ray of sunshine on a cloudy day. Their apple fritters are like tiny, sweet pillows of joy that magically disappear in your mouth. It's like they have a secret ingredient that makes you want to do a happy dance every time you take a bite. And their cookies? Well, they're like a warm hug from your grandma - comforting and delicious. You could say Munchers Bakery is the dough-nut to your coffee, the sugar to your spice, the butter to your bread. They really know how to bake up a storm and make your taste buds sing with joy. If you're ever in Lawrence, Kansas, skip the regular old pastry shops and heading straight to Munchers Bakery for a taste of heaven. Trust us, your taste buds will thank you.

Yelp
Best donuts ever! Love the variety & they are the bomb! Always friendly service & quick in and out!

Yelp
#nationaldonutday and we grabbed some yesterday and couldn't help trying them before today when we headed out of town. This little shop is tucked into a small plaza. The lady who welcomed me let me know they were cleaning one case, but had all those to choose from too. I picked three for the hubby-apple fritter, apple streusel, and chocolate glazed. I picked a long john and strawberry cream-cheese. I also got two HUGE chocolate chip cookies for our drive to our next stop today. Couldn't resist the long john after lunch yesterday and was mildly disappointed it was not cream filled, but the maple icing was great and the donut was light and fluffy. Hubby ate the chocolate glazed and enjoyed it. Saved the others for today and that strawberry cream cheese donut was legit amazing. It had a strawberry glaze and tucked inside was a strawberry cream cheese filling. The donut was almost crescent roll like, but heavier with some layers of goodness. Saved my cookie for an afternoon pick me up. Is it shareable? Yes. Did I share? No. I bought my hubby his own. Lol. The cookie hit the spot. Great texture-not too hard and not too soft with perfect amount of chocolate chips.

Yelp
I've been a fan of Munchers for years! I can't believe I didn't find out about them until partway through my undergrad career. As a grad student and part-time Lawrence resident, I love to stop in for donuts. We opted for a strawberry cream cheese donut (one of their specialities!), double chocolate cake donuts, and a maple frosted cinnamon roll. All were delicious! I especially loved the filling of my cream cheese donut! Another favorite is the mini cinnamon rolls, which come is regular and orange. Muncher's also serves other desserts and pastries, like cookies, cupcakes, fritters, and brownies. The space is pretty open with lots of seating. My boyfriend and I had no problem finding seating when we were in today. Overall the space had quite a bit of crumbs and some trash on the floor, but nothing major. We also visited around noon on a Sunday, and they had plenty of donuts in the case! Bonus - they are open 24 hours a day! This is perfect for a late night sugar fix or study break.

Yelp
I gotta say this cake was the most perfect tasting, looked beautiful, and was admired by all, exactly what I hoped it would be. Check, check and check. Thank you. It's been a while since purchasing a custom cake and I winced at the cost but was so worth it. I get it
google avatar

Paige T.

Yelp
There's a reason this place is popular- it's probably the best donut place for hundreds of miles. Selection is vast, prices are low, and most importantly- the donuts have incredible flavor. The blueberry fritters are definitely my favorite. They also have other baked goods that look amazing- cakes, cookies, etc. It's worth a stop if you're anywhere near the KC metro.
google avatar

Kaz S.

Yelp
These people can't do math. If you order more than one thing they seem to get flustered and angry at you for giving them business. Anytime I ask a question the response is always cold and as if I'm doing them a disservice for even entering their shop. I get overcharged regularly and literally everytime I've went there's items missing in the bag that I don't realize until I've already left. Their cream cheese donut is meh, I guess it's iNcREdiBle if this is the only bakery you've ever been to. Do better Munchers.
google avatar

Robert H.

Yelp
I love this place! Great selection of donuts and other bakery items. If your looking for a good donut that's not from a chain, this is your place!
google avatar

Julie S.

Yelp
These were, hands-down, the worst donuts I have ever had. Tough and tasteless. I selected a maple long john and a cake with chocolate icing. Took one bite of each and threw the rest away. The staff was extremely friendly, and the bakery was very clean and inviting, however.
google avatar

Jace K.

Yelp
The staff were kind and everything smelled and looked amazing! However, ALL of the donuts we bought were super dry. I was honestly so disappointed, I've been hearing a bunch of good stuff about them. I'm still giving 3 stars because it was late afternoon when we went, so maybe that was the reason? I'm not sure. I'd probably try them again, preferably in the early morning!
google avatar

Michael S.

Yelp
I was advised this was the place in Lawrence to get donuts for a client meeting. It's an old style, no frills place in a tired shopping center that veers away from Iowa Street. I first drove past Munchers before locating it. The inside was tired too, but fairly busy with customers. The woman who served me seemed tired at 8:30 and filled my order with disinterest. My dozen and a half donuts were stacked on top of each other in the box, meaning donuts had to be handled later to get to those was below. .Where newer bakeries try to outdo each other with inventive recipes Munchers offers dependable and familiar choices.
google avatar

Audrey L.

Yelp
I stopped in here on an afternoon and the line was quite long (about 15-20 minutes). There were a few huge orders at the front in a row and only one guy ringing people so that's not really their fault. I wasn't expecting such a rush either. Really, the focus should be the donuts. The donuts are perfectly sweet-- especially the sprinkles one! I love that I can have one (or two) and not feel sick like I do with most donuts in this world. Donuts are my #1 pregnancy craving and I normally regret indulging but I didn't here. The dough is also DELICIOUS; it's not just a delivery mechanism for the icing. The cream cheese donuts were really interesting-- I've never had anything like that before. All in all-- really awesome donuts and I would 100% come back to try other pastries or donuts even outside of my typical favorites. The atmosphere was shockingly drab for somewhere that sells delicious baked goodness. It was poorly lit and grey-ish? The employee looked stressed out and everything was pretty unorganized. The whole interior could do with a face lift. He was so busy he couldn't restock so they had a lot of donuts on the back racks that weren't displayed. That is always a bit sad because you don't know what you could be missing out on. The donuts & hours are good enough to get 4 stars from me but if they had a better interior/morale they could get 5! Still 100% worth the visit.

Yelp
Can't miss. Excellent selection to take care of your cravings. Highly recommend. Bought 30 dozen for an event. Nice to work with. Recommend.
google avatar

Tim M.

Yelp
While in town for a college visit, we overheard someone on a bus talking about the cream cheese donuts here so we had to try them out. Ordered the cream cheese donuts and some cinnamon rolls. Of course they were delicious! What would you expect? Surprisingly, we liked the cinnamon rolls even better. We're going back in the morning to have some more!
google avatar

Sandra D.

Yelp
I love the fact that this place is open 24 hours! The donuts are great! The Apple or blueberry fritters are so good. My husband loves the cream cheese donuts both varieties. Their small cake donuts are awesome and their pudding balls are rich! I do wish they served jelly donuts---that is the only thing missing. The service is 9 times out of 10 good! You definitely need to check your bag or watch them when they take your order because they sometimes give you the wrong thing!
google avatar

Ryan G.

Yelp
To me, a bakery touting doughnuts should first be judged on the deliciousness, or lack thereof, of their glaze doughnut. Munchers makes a quality glaze doughnut- though I was left neither blown away nor turned away, which is a good thing. Had I left this place based on thier glaze doughnut alone, I would have missed out on the almost numbing joy brought to me in the form of their strawberry cheesecake doughnut. Simply put, go to Munchers and eat one of these. You'll thank me... after thanking the bakery staff. Well done.

Yelp
My favorite snack/treat shop in Lawrence. Locally owned and everything is made with love!

Yelp
Cream cheese donuts. Yep. That was the promise a friend made to me that got me to go to a donut shop at a time I would never even think of wanting a donut. Given I am not from here, I have to say I was a little worried when we pulled into this non descript strip mall that Munchers is located in and and thought it was an odd place for a 24 hour donut shop. Where were all the people? I pulled open the door and a few people were studying or having coffee with a pastry. But there were no donuts. The cases had brownies, cupcakes and cinnamon rolls. There were muffins and other tasty treats, but no donuts, let alone the cream cheese ones I had been lured with. I asked the rather surly guy at the counter if they would be making more and he just shrugged his shoulders. Not very helpful. So I ordered a brownie, bought my friend a cupcake and we left. And while they do now take credit cards, I left my cash on the counter cuz the guy was shuffling off to help someone else. Cream cheese donuts? Sounds delicious. But I think if you want them, you need to be there in the morning cuz at night they are no where to be found!

Yelp
Time to update and upgrade my rating again. To their eternal credit, Munchers seems to be responsive to community feedback. Soon after my previous review, they tightened up shop in a big way, and were reliably safety conscious with masks and food handling. Still the best donut source in town, hands down. A Lawrence treasure.
