The 15 Best Breweries in Charleston | Eater Carolinas

"This Belgian style brewery brings European beer to Charleston. Munkle Brewing lives on the north side of the peninsula with an outdoor patio and ample food trucks to keep the party going. Think blondes, pils, lagers and wit beers with occasional collaborations which bring on heavier and higher octane brews." - Barbara Skidmore

Google
It seems to be hard lately to find a new-ish brewery that produces creative, but traditional craft beers at such a high level. This isn’t hyperbole. This brewery is producing three impressive styles of beer with incredible craft and precision. The Belgian style beers are true to the process and yet adapted to the unique climate of Charleston, SC. The Belgian Brown is drinkable on a hot summer day, but also so wonderfully complex to be paired with a nice filet or some local shrimp and grits. The Pils is German perfection. The two American style ales I tried were also perfect. No pallet wreckers! Craft is alive and well at this brewery and it’s a lovely place to drop in for an afternoon. Can’t wait to come back and try some of the other special offerings at Munkle. Thank you!

Google
Have lived in Charleston for 5 years now and have tried every brewery in the area. This is by far the best beer in Charleston. They produce creative but still traditional beer that always brings me back for more. The only downside is that they do not allow dogs. This is quite literally the only reason i visit other breweries. If you look across the street at Edmunds, there are dogs galore and I am sure that more folks would come to Munkle if they were to allow pups. But other than that, this place rocks and I 100% recommend it.

Google
Great brewery with some honestly delicious beers. Creative brewing too, with flavors I haven't seen much elsewhere. They are super cool people and it's a great place to hang out and game with a tasting flight!

Google
Love this place. One of my favorite breweries in Charleston

Google
Had a wonderful time with more traditional brews which was refreshing after feeling like everywhere else had a way too many IPAs. Especially enjoyed the saisons and the brunes. Great barkeep and cozy atmosphere. Smaller interior tap room and uncovered patio but a great stop and would highly recommend while visiting in the area. Cheers!!

Google
Great atmosphere, the views of the surrounding area are nice. The bartender was exceptionally good, great selection of Belgium beers. The beer selection was exceptional. They had core beers that were excellent and some for the adventurous of palate. The only mark I can see truly against is the parking is limited so... Get here early and have a awesomely crafted beer.

Google
My wife and I are making the rounds of the many breweries located in the Charleston area. We spent the afternoon at Munkle enjoying some great beers . Pale Ale, Pilsner, porter and stout. They don’t do flights but offer hefty 7 oz half pours . Today they had a food truck offering great Alabama BBQ. Real nice venue Polite and helpful staff. Certainly rated 5 stars.

Orlando Smith

Google
Great atmosphere and great beer. Not much more information needed. The staff were friendly and polite and were very knowledgeable about the beers. I got the 66 blonde which was a nice light beer. Note*- the food in the picture was from a pop up called foxes fried! And they were amazing. Try and catch a night when they have another popup all around a great place to go and spend time with friends.

Yelp
One of the many stops on the CHS Brew Trolley to which I've been meaning to try Munkle for their sheer Medieval / Bavarian decor and tavern like energy. They offer a mix of ales, lagers, IPAs, non beer items, and wines. I loved the outdoor seating so plenty of space for folks to enjoy their beers. One of my favorite breweries to enjoy a cuppa

Yelp
I recently visited Munkle for a meetup with Charleston Green Drinks. Even though the brewery has been open for a few years, it was my first time visiting. The outdoor area in the back is small but cozy, and Munkle also hosted a seafood pop-up that night. Inside has a very European feel that I enjoyed. The mural that says heaven doesn't have beer, that's why we drink it here is my favorite. That phrase will be a permanent part of my vocabulary. Munkle's beer is Belgian style, so if you want to branch out with craft beers, this is the spot. They offer a few 0% options in the cooler for Dry January, such as Kombucha and Jones Soda. When I told the beer-tender I'm a sour fan, he quickly recommended a canned apple cider in the case, and it hit the spot. The parking lot is super small, so I recommend either parking on the street, or using the Brewery Shuttle to get around if it's a Saturday.

Yelp
Great beer with a solid Belgian backbone. Can sit and enjoy the slow rolling train while drinking great beer. Bartender was great at suggesting different beers to try. Definitely going back very soon. Several left to try. They also have to go beer. Try the BBA Grand National if you can get a bottle.

Yelp
I came for a private event for my sister's wedding. She rented out the place and had a private chef come in for food. I love all the seating outside and for a brewery they have alot of non beer options. They've got two ciders I loved the grapefruit cider ! They've got Prosecco, white wine, and a red. The inside had plenty of seating ! Definitely recommend love the twinkle lights makes the ambience, so beautiful and welcoming

Yelp
3 stars, extra star for the amazing Spanish food from Castejons that day. It was kind of a weird vibe here. There was a younger lady who was the only one with any personality or friendliness here. The beer was really good, exceptional even, it was just one of the weirder feeling breweries we visited that day, and if it's always like that I'd be grabbing beer to go. That food though, good lord. I'm going to be dreaming about those smokey chicken empanadas for a looonng time. My mouth is watering right now. Castejons is next level.
google avatar

Yelp
Great outdoor area, could've sat inside but there was such a nice breeze today. I told the sweet bartender what types of beers I liked and she chose one for me. Next time I think I'll ask for a sample, she was close but I liked my friends better. I'll definitely go back and ask in the future for a small taste. It still was a lil hoppy for me. But I'm sure really good for those not as picky as myself.

Yelp
A great little place, slightly out of the way up on Meeting Street Road, with the back of the property adjacent to the railroad tracks where a slow train came by with cars for hauling motor vehicles, perhaps BMWs from the upper South Carolina factory. Tables outside for the afternoon sun next to the tracks which are not a distraction at all for the brews being made and served here. I had two, starting with the Gully Washer Wit, a wheat style brew without any harshness but great for the taste buds. For the second one, I went different with the Munk Pils (obviously a pilsner by its name) but still my taste buds were enjoying the brew in the afternoon inside in the cool as it was another warm Charleston afternoon. One large TV playing college football on Labor Day Saturday. Enjoyable place and a stellar brewery. A place to return to!

Yelp
First time stopping by Munkle Brewing today and so glad I did. The hefeweizen was light and refreshing on a hot day and their patio was gorgeous. Stepping into a busy brewery and getting quick, friendly service was also a bonus. Can't wait to go back with a group next time!
google avatar

Madison R.

Yelp
chill place! beer was super awesome. Environment is super laidback & the staff are really kind. We will be back!
google avatar

Melissa F.

Yelp
Munkle just feels like home tbh. My sister had her pre-wedding drinks here. We've been here more times than I can remember. It's such a staple spot! Their wheat beer (Hefeweizen) is my favorite. Always fun to see what food trucks / vendors they have. Outdoor area is my favorite!
google avatar

Jen X.

Yelp
I've been on the hunt for a saison in Charleston and this place was the first place that truly had one that tasted like a saison. It was light, fruity and didn't have that typical "beer" aftertaste. Once again munkle didn't disappoint and this is probably my favorite brewery in Charleston consistently
google avatar

Jessica B.

Yelp
I loved the whole vibe at Munkle! Even with inside seating closed due to Covid, I enjoyed it. The outside area is set up nicely and even has a really great (gas) fire pit. We went on a very chilly evening and it was perfect. Trent behind the bar was knowledgeable and helped me choose a beer that I'd like, since I'm not really a beer drinker. He let me taste a few after asking me about likes and dislikes. I felt very relaxed and comfortable at this location. I'll certainly be back! They have food vendors/trucks visit the brewery, no on site kitchen. The parking lot is small but street parking is plentiful and free. We were there on game night, which was super fun. Games + friends + good drinks. What more could you ask for!
google avatar

Wendell W.

Yelp
Great small brewery. They sort of specialize in Belgians, (which I don't drink) .But all of their beer so far is really good. They don't have any food, but usually have a food truck. Staff is really nice, They really know their beer. A lot of to go cans. And the only place that I know of that has a crokinole boards that you can use.
google avatar

Andrew J.

Yelp
Really cool view without a view out back of this brewery. You're really not looking at anything except some railroad tracks and office buildings on the other side, but the space is great and seating is awesome. The inside also has a lot of appeal as well. Oh! And they have good beer. Bartender recommended the Bull Blonde and I really liked that one, then I tried the Gully Washer Wit as well which had a really nice unfiltered taste to it. Friendly service, good beer, food trucks (check their schedule), and a really nice space will have me back here soon.
google avatar

Evan G.

Yelp
Munkle Brewing Co. on Meeting Street Road in Charleston is a great place to go for drinks and more in a cool and relaxed atmosphere. I really like the space and everything that they have available here. The staff here is very friendly and makes sure that you have everything that you need.
google avatar

Ashton M.

Yelp
Munkle continues to be an excellent spot to grab a Belgian with my dog and friends. The wit and saison are my favorites, but they also offer a few other funky options. Their indoor space is cool in the summer, and their outdoor space is dog-friendly and kid-friendly (although next to railroad tracks). Service has been prompt and knowledgable. They often have food trucks as well.

Yelp
One of our many stops on the brewery circuit that is the holy city, we landed at Munkle. My first time here and I am super happy we came. The first thing you notice as you walk in is the giant mural on the wall that says, "in heaven there is no beer, that's why we drink it here". Hey, any excuse to drink beer is a good one. The bartender was super personable and witty ready to steer you in the right direction. The beer is mostly Belgian or German. With selections for everyone from pills to stouts to ipa's. The couple that we had were Heavenly If you haven't been to Munkle Brewing I would highly recommend stopping by, they will make you a believer.
google avatar

Tony L.

Yelp
Thanks to the team from Munkle for entertaining me for 3 hours when my flight was delayed. I loved the beer and the establishment.
google avatar

Karla F.

Yelp
Their stouts are amazing. I cannot say that enough. We absolutely loved the vibe and service we received at Munkle. Our only complaint is that we wished a train would have come by while we were there to really set off the atmosphere. They have been added to my list of top breweries in Charleston for both atmosphere and quality!
google avatar

Jen R.

Yelp
Amazing experience, service, and Belgian beers! Outdoor patio was beautiful and the beers were true to style, refreshing and flavorful. Would recommend the triple and pale ale if you're a looking for something refreshing!
google avatar

Christy M.

Yelp
Outside seating is open, easy parking, food truck! Thankful for a place to hang but, get a drink and eat some yummy food!
google avatar

Crystal O.

Yelp
Munkle's specialty is Belgian-style beers and it does them very well. There is a large outside seating area with covered areas from rain and sun. A food truck was there offering some fantastic Philly Cheese Steaks. We split one with an order of fries. It hit the spot! We had two beers, the Brugge City Brown Ale. Great body and flavor without being heavy. The Gully Washer Wit is a clean and refreshing Belgian Wheat. Food trucks are available most nights. Check them out#
google avatar

Alandria M.

Yelp
I really enjoyed this brewery! I tried it for the first time over the Memorial Day weekend. It was super low key. A bunch of draft options! Cute and clean and intimate with ample outdoor seating, which we got to enjoy on that beautiful day! There was also a yummy food truck, who's name I cannot remember but I really enjoyed their fries! This picture is of their loaded totchos. A lot of flavor. I preferred the fries though but I'm biased towards sweet potato tots lol! Anywho, great spot! Can't wait to go back.
google avatar

William S.

Yelp
Great space and nods to historical accuracy. The brewery stays committed to making their style and doesn't pander to the haze bro's or beetus banditos. Big beer hall space and outdoor area by the tracks. I only drank inside. Great European feel.
google avatar

Robyn S.

Yelp
Finally got to stop in here! It was a rainy afternoon, but I love the building and how cozy it feels inside. Great selection of beers for all of us to try.
google avatar

Caitlin R.

Yelp
Did a little brewery tour around town and I'm so glad we found this little spot! Incredible beer, cute indoor space, and awesome service. To top it off, they've usually got a great rotation of food trucks.

Yelp
Thanks to Michael M., a UYE was created and our brewery crawl started here. This was the first stop of 4 breweries in the area. I enjoyed each of them for different reasons. Munkle - I'm not sure what that word means, but it's a great new spot. It's a large tall brewery with plenty of seating and great bar area. We were lucky enough to enjoy a beautiful sunshiny day in December and sat outside at one of the patio tables. At each of the stops we made this day I asked if they had a sour beer. Munkle did not so I went with a light beer. Unfortunately I did not write down or remember the name of any of the beers I got this day, but I do remember the one I selected here was good. It seems like they had 6-12 selections and after a sip of a few others, I didn't find one that I didn't like. This is a great new location in a part of Charleston that just keeps growing and surprising me.

Shane P.

Yelp
Great beer and atmosphere! Palmer and his staff treated us like family. I can't wait to go back next time I'm in Charleston. Cheers!

Jose L.

Yelp
This place never updates their website and they do false advertising too. They advertise a food truck menu and there never is a food truck. They misrepresent themselves and make constant excuses for lying on their website. No food and they close early and don't follow business hour's advertised. Be weary of them. If you want food and beer - go elsewhere.

Yelp
In the hip brewery area towards downtown a drop in for some brews at Munkle Brewing co is a must. Set right near the rail tracks that add a unique character to the breweries backyard lounge area , Munkle serves a short menu of cold traditional Belgium beers. Co owner and brew master Palmer Quimby has created a relaxing pet , family friendly environment that quenches your thirst on a hot day . Don't expect IPAs these are tasty "Chimey" type beers that pack a punch along with their flavor. Try the Bourbon barrel Brune The Brugge or Gully washer in your flight . Challenge your Friends at the indoor Pool table or Hook ring game out side . Its great sunny afternoon retreat Look out for the artistically graffitied BMW train that sometimes slowly cruises past for a view, all adding to an enjoyable tasting experience.

Logan F.

Yelp
This place is just pure class. Their beer is old World Belgian, with the highest of quality ingredients. The gents behind the counter know their beer and are happy to have a conversation and explain the processes. I always enjoy Munkle, the beer is phenomenal and the staff are even better. Cheers
google avatar

Luke S.

Yelp
Out of all the breweries in Charleston, Munkle is just Meh to me. To be fair..I am not a huge fan of Belgian beers which is Munkle's main style they brew. The outdoor area is great, dogs are allowed throughout the brewery and it is pretty cool when a train rolls by. Out of all the beers I've had here the Porter is my favorite. My biggest pet peeve is that the wall between the taproom and brewing area prevents you from seeing all the equipment. It takes some of the charm from the brewery experience.
google avatar

Matt R.

Yelp
Munkle is making the best beer in Charleston. They are focused on Belgium-style beers and have an outstanding barrel aging program. Rum Barrels, Whiskey & Bourbon Barrels- they just pair perfectly with the sweeter Belgium style beers that Munkle are serving. Don't expect to find any IPAs. They have a light beer with raspberries called "Munk Light" that clocks in under 4% ABV that is a perfect beer for the beach, boat- anytime you're out in the sun. It's absolutely delicious. They have an excellent line up of rotating food trucks. Great outdoor patio that is kid and dog friendly. Very careful around COVID- I felt completely safe bringing my family here. Everyone is wearing masks and they were wiping down each table after people left. They do offer beers to go in bottles, cans, and crowlers. Prices are very reasonable for their beers. Just top notch beer and a wonderful experience all around.
google avatar

Yelp
Wow, why has it taken me this long to come to Munkle? We came here on a Friday night and enjoyed delicious food by the Castejons. The weather was perfect for sitting on the patio and there was plenty of outside seating. I tried the Pout House Pale Ale, the Gully Washer Wit, and the Pilsner. My favorite was definitely the Pout House Pale Ale, which was slightly fruity and light. They definitely have a beer for every type of beer drinker. The space itself is huge (both outside and inside), so I doubt it would ever feel overcrowded. We spent the night playing pool, drinking beer, and snacking on delicious food. We also pet a couple of dogs (which is always a win). Overall, we had a great night and the crowd seemed to all be having fun as well. I will definitely be back to check out more of the pop-ups/ make my way through the beer menu.

Yelp
Solid Belgian beers at Munkle! I think Munkle is my new Charleston favorite! Located right on the beer trail that has now become part of Charleston's beer district, Munkle is a fun, modern yet unpretentious brewery that specializes in Belgian style beers. The atmosphere is great and dog friendly both inside and outside! The beers are all solid. I love their Triple and Dubbel. Their Saison is also impressive. I look forward to trying many of their new styles as they continue ramping up production, but I consider them to be extremely solid for being so new to the scene and so early into mass production mode. Definitely a "must stop" on the brewery hopping circuit in the area!
google avatar

Ailin J.

Yelp
UNIQUE CHARACTERISTIC Cute barn feel with card games, board games, pool, etc available for people to enjoy themselves while drinking beer. FIRST IMPRESSION This place deserves five stars right now for being a great new business! They were so incredibly friendly and the beer was so cheap!! We bought a 7oz for only $3 and the bartender just filled the entire glass full anyways for my friends and I. ALCOHOL Though a small variety of beer available, it tasted good! Good combination of some light and dark beers and for only $3 you really can't complain!
google avatar

Patrick W.

Yelp
We happened onto the MBC after a visit to nearby Edmund's Oast. One of their regulars suggested we stop in and recommended the traditional Belgian style beers. They have a nice breezy patio alongside the railroad tracks. It's a unique and fun experience for beer and train fans alike. We loved the Gully Washer Wit (a classic wheat ale) made with 3 different types of citrus peels, chamomile, and Indian coriander seeds; Literally perfect and refreshing for a 100° day. After the light start I chatted up Matthew (the affable and knowledgeable bar man) about the beers on offer. He suggested we check out the 3rd Floor Tripel. This dark, lovely rich beer may be the over all BEST beer we tasted on this trip to Charleston. Again, not ideal to throw back three or four pints, it's the equivalent of a black Forrest cake.
google avatar

Yelp
Great beers. Great service. Great atmosphere. Can't wait to go again Staff was really helpful in choosing beers. For such a small place I didn't expect it to be that good
google avatar

Virginia S.

Yelp
My friends and I stopped in today I'm a brewery bouncing tour. It was awesome! The beer is delicious with lots of choices. The brewery is decorated like a German brew haus. The beer tasted great too with no bitterness and you can do half pours! Can't wait to go back. For sure it reminded me of Bavaria.

Yelp
This could be my new favorite brewery around town. It's located a little out of town on Meeting Street Road, but easy to find and get in/out of, with on-site parking in a gravel lot. They told me they just opened mid-October, but they already look and act like a very established brewery. You can immediately tell it's a friendly, welcoming environment when you hit the door. Speaking of doors, there is a medium-sized bar that services both inside and outside patrons, and the outside is accessed via a roll-door like in garages. There is a nice sitting area inside with couches, tables and chairs, and a pool table. The brewery welcomes dogs, but please make sure they play along well with others. In fact, the brewery has its own "resident" guard dog. He's very friendly once you buy a drink and take a seat. ;-) He (Brugge) might even ask you to play with him if you feel so inclined. There are picnic tables and rocking chairs on the "porch", and a tv at the bar if you need to catch a game. The place feels very spacious, yet homey. I think it's the people. The beer was good, although I only had one since we were participating in a brewery tour for the day. Our group spaced out and enjoyed the beautiful weather outside, some in the lawn in direct sun, while others took up a shady spot under the porch roof. A few people, along with two dogs, joined us outside and commenced to playing a game of corn hole. I must admit I believe only one of them had ever played before and might have been trying to show-off a little for the others. There were a few others inside, so a pretty typical brewery attendance in the early afternoon. I will definitely keep this place on my radar and bring others out soon.

Yelp
I cannot rave enough as a Beer Enthusiast from CA. If you don't know beer, you won't know how much this means. I don't give any reviews away, you earn them and Munkle not only met my expectations, they surpassed it on my 6/28/21 visit. Palmer went out of his way to give the best tasting I have ever had and it was the only beer I made room for in my checked luggage. He is a purist and no BS on what he brews. I called one of my favorite OG 30 plus yrs. home brewer friends while still there that visits Europe regularly about how much I loved their brews. I came for their Belgian and I left with a huge grin. I am bummed I cannot visit them on a regular basis. Munkle delivered on Southern Hospitality and I am so very thankful!

Yelp
Checked out the brewery today for the first time. It was great weather so it was nice there were so many tables outside. The outside area was very nice and clean. There's a fire pit that I definitely want to come back when it's cold to see in action. the inside has plenty of seating space and has a cool atmosphere. I ordered their silver shoe shout and it was great! Very bold and full of flavor. I did try another beer and I forget the name but I think it was a triple. Very good! Love that this brewer Is close to a few others. Will definitely be back.
google avatar

Erika W.

Yelp
This brewery was my favorite on our UYE brewery crawl. Great space, great vibe. I love the outdoor seating and that there is corn hole. I thought the beer was good and my husband enjoyed it too. I do wish they had some football on though because that's how I can lure my husband back on a Sunday again! I also love that they had a private parking lot.

Yelp
Just like everywhere else in the world, there's a micro-brew revolution going on. I was in Charleston for the 3rd time, and I don't remember ever going to a brewery in this town before. But here I was heading to the newish Munkle Brewing for a beer. It didn't hurt that I had a Belgian with me to test the Belgian style beers. It was in the middle of nowhere, more or less, but we ended up meeting the owner and that was kind of the point. He wanted to create a destination that's not just another bar. We ended up sampling all 5 of the beers on tap, and all of them were good. I don't remember which I liked best, but I'd happily drink here again. The owner took us in the back and showed us the brewing room as well. Good spot to hang out and have some decent beer, maybe play a game of pool. Super chill. Just keep in mind it's Belgian STYLE, not authentic Belgian beers.
google avatar

Craig S.

Yelp
Belgian Beer Spot. Definitely carving out that niche is Munkle. Belgian beers aren't light or over hopped IPAs. Usually Belgians are considered complex; sweet and sour, fruity/citrus, etc. They have 4-5 beers on draft; all in the Belgian style. And although I'm not a Belgian-style fan, I'm glad I went and thought my Belgian porter was pretty good. Big open space with a nice outdoor patio. Pool table and corn-hole available. The brewery puppy was a ball of energy and a blast to watch!
google avatar

Lucas E.

Yelp
Such a great spot! In a world of IPAs, give me Munkle. Don't get me wrong, I love IPAs, but with much of America's craft beer scene cranking out great (some not so great) IPAs, Munkle is throwing back the clock and brewing some of the oldest beer styles in history. I lived in Germany near the Belgian border for 5 years and these delicious beers take me back to those Trappist tastes that spurred my love for beer. Fantastic Belgian beers at Munkle. Great service. Great setting. Nice pool table. Laid back feel that fits so perfectly in Charleston. I can't wait to return, and I can't wait to see where Munkle goes, I'm guessing far! Drink local!
google avatar

Christopher B.

Yelp
So this place is pretty good. Serving traditional Belgian style brews. Usually pretty busy. They have a pool table inside. Air conditioning, patio and dogs are allowed as well. So why did I give them 3 stars if I like them. They don't have beers that I like. So this is not a negative review about their venue. It's my personal preference. When I go out to grab some craft brew, Munkle won't be at the top of my list. Sorry guys. However, I go back for those that like tripels or pale ales. So that'd be my advice, get some other beers on tap. Branch out a little, maybe get some small bites or food trucks to come visit.
google avatar

Tyler K.

Yelp
The best staff, great vibes, plenty of games to play, and SOLID beer that never disappoints.
google avatar

Ashley G.

Yelp
This place is great! The space is comfortable, clean, and inviting! Inside they have a great pool table for free play and some nice outdoor seating as well. Their beer is very good for being a newer brewery! They absolutely know what they're doing. The bar staff, who I'm pretty sure is generally the owner(s) is always very friendly and personable and they have a sweet brewery dog that hangs out too! This is definitely my go to brewery in the new Charleston "brewery district".

Yelp
Stumbled upon Munkle Brewing Co when looking for some spots to check out for a one day/night stop in Charleston! When Yelping, I saw that there was a good concentration of breweries in this "industrial area" and it wasn't a super far walk from Downtown! I absolutely loved it here. We came on a Sunday afternoon, and it wasn't busy at all. There was a great outdoor area, where my friend and I sat on rocking chairs while watching a few other people play corn hole on the lawn. The weather was perfect, and there wasn't much traffic on the road on the other side of the train tracks. The beers themselves are all Belgian style. I wasn't a HUGE fan of the ones I had, but my friend seemed to really enjoy his! They had a pretty decent selection, and the price was right. Inside, there is more seating at tables and right at the bar (indoor and outdoor), a pool table, and lots of space to hangout. It is right next door and across the street from a couple other cool places, so definitely a good spot to hit on its own, or if you're looking to brewery hop!
