How to Plan a Food-focused Train Trip Through Europe

"A centuries-old town-square market with about 150 vendors that pulses as the city’s heartbeat, overflowing in spring with wild garlic, alpine cheeses, local wines, hand-milled flours, and an impressive variety of white and green asparagus; sampling moments such as freshly baked rye with herbed quark and a pot of raspberry pudding capture the market’s convivial, food-forward atmosphere." - Hannah Howard

I loved the market but the operating hours are too short. It started to drizzle heavily and we had to took shelter in the nearby mall. When we exit the mall back to the market, all stalls are gone by noon.

A large open area near the cathedral, surrounded by many cafes and restaurants, and the nearby streets are full of clothing and cosmetics stores, and there's everything.

Beautiful farmers market in front of the cathedral with tons of produce such as vegetables, cheese, meats, and breads. There are stands where you can try wine or prosecco from the region for an average of 3 euros a glass. There are also flower stands and stands where you can buy small gifts/toys. This is a must do if you visit Freiburg.

I love this kind of market. You can buy fresh produce, pottery, wine...and you can also have some food there. There are quite a fee food trucks at very affordable priced

Beautiful place with many tents and awesome food. You have to try the sausages, they are amazing. Also, there are many vegetables shops, all full of fresh vegetables for an almost good price (yes, everything is expensive in Freiburg, be ready).

I highly recommend this market, there are famous red sausages, Italian products, fresh vegetables and fruits, jams and juices. You can visit the market every day, except on Sundays. Don't miss it!

Freiburg is not very welcoming to all visitors. How many cities in the world close their main square completely for a paid-ticket concert? So any other visitor to your city is not allowed to see and visit your main sights? You either make the event public and free or you do a closed event in a fenced off park or stadium on the outskirts of your city, like most serious cities would do. Or leave ample space to move around, not the 2 meters between the fences and buildings.

A great farmers market with local produce and meats, along with imports, crafts and delicacies. I tried the water buffalo sausage with parsley, sourced from a local water buffalo farm and it was absolutely delicious. There were options for vegetarians and meat lovers alike. Lots of fresh fruit, teas and spices. Many of the merchants take credit card payments. Bring your own bags.

Yelp
A fantastic street market that surrounds the Freiburger Münster church and offers everything from sausages and cheese to flowers and neuer süsser, a carbonated wine that tastes like a fizzy glass of grape juice. I was there around noon on a Thursday, so I don't know if the market is a daily or weekly event, but it does seem to be packed up and moved out by 3pm.

Yelp
So lovely to walk around the Munster and enjoy the towering cathedral and the beautiful buildings in this cobblestoned plaza. The vendors are terrific - there are hand-crafted toys, brushes, soap, herbs, olives, flowers...also several food vendors. Currywurst is a must-have! Then settle down at one of the beer gardens and enjoy a cold local brew.
