"This women-owned and family-run Vietnamese kitchen started out as a food truck before going the brick-and-mortar route in Takoma Park. Muoi Tieu, which means “salt and pepper,” specializes in fresh spring rolls, banh mi sandwiches, rice vermicelli noodle bowls, sizzling crepes, and hearty pho. Home-cooked favorites include banh beo (small steamed rice cakes), braised pork belly, and fried branzino with a savory ginger nuoc cham. If there’s room for dessert, don’t skip the Vietnamese flan or steamed banana cake. They also serve beer, wine, and sake." - Claudia Rosenbaum

This is a DMV hidden gem!!! A small Vietnamese restaurant with a small menu but everything taste really good. I live 5min away and never knew it exist until a friend told me. Food is fresh and clean. I got a small table outdoor by the alley and the atmosphere is fantastic My favorite is the sauce on top of the steak!!!! It is WOWWWWW. I would definitely come back and try more on the menu.

Great service and the food was great too! I ordered a passion fruit iced tea and it was very refreshing. The pho was also great and so were the shrimp rolls.

We had a wonderful lunch at Muoi Tieu today. The fresh spring roll has layers of flavor and texture coming from the complex ingredients of stir-fried purple cabbage, fried shallot, jicama, fresh veggie with hint of herb (mint). The rice paper has the perfect elasticity to hold all contents together. The traditional dishes Bahn Mi sandwich and Vermicelli bowl are very nicely done. For desert we tried Steamed Banana cake - soft and flavorful. BTW, the Vietnamese coffee is one of the best I’ve had in the DMV region.

10/21/24 - updating to 5 stars based on a recent visit. Great food, great service, and great atmosphere. The owner, Thuy Tu, was really nice and took time to share her philosophy on cooking, her menu, and on life. She's also a _______ Starwars fan 😍😍😍. See if you can find all the homage to Starwars hidden all over her restaurant. Hint: Be sure to look up! 😃 ------- Great food at a charming neighborhood restaurant. Their menu selection is small, but everything is made with care and love. I had the pork Banh Mi and the sandwich was superb; bread had great texture and perfectly crusted, pork belly was nicely cooked with a lot of flavor, and the veggies nicely complemented the generous portions of meat in the sandwich. I ordered carry out, so I didn't experience the service, but I've heard it's superb. Give this place a try!

Great small place to have lunch, have not had a chance to eat dinner here yet. We had beef pho, bahn mi , and pork egg roles. The broth for the pho was crazy delicious. I regret not picking the bowl up and slurping the rest of the liquid. The bread for the bahn mi was a nice crusty bread with a nice chew to it. We also had a Vietnamese coffee with condensed milk. I need to come back and order more!

I was a little skeptical cause pho is $18 but it’s new add close to home. Glad we gave it a go. Food was fresh, well executed and unique. Enjoyed every dish. Great for a couple but not for larger family style eating as each plate has limited portions. We shared an appetizer, two big plates and a dessert with a glass of wine. Paid about $75, not bad for today’s DC small plate dining. We cleaned our plates and I felt like I could have eaten just a hint more.

Everything was amazing and thoughtfully executed—from the appetizers and entrees to the design, vibe, and customer service. We walked in and sat at the bar, and the bartender/server was so friendly and attentive. We also had the pleasure of meeting the owner, who was so kind. It’s obvious that she pours her heart and soul into the restaurant. We had the fresh shiitake rolls, bánh bèo cakes (tofu), watercress soup, and shrimp and pork bánh xèo. All excellent and yummy, with fresh and clean ingredients, which we could easily observe from the bar. Can’t wait to go back!

Yelp
Micro Review Visited the restaurant on a stormy Sunday. Plenty of parking on street or paid lots. Definitely worth a visit to Takoma Park. Foods fresh and they sell snacks and delicacies. Try the chili crisp with any dish. The hot tea and Vietnamese Coffees are perfect to awaken you, especially mid-day. Restaurant has indoor seating and some seating at the bar. All staff were kind and helped explain menu. We LOVED the fried chicken and beef noodle soup

Yelp
A couple of friends and I came to this place because we were in the neighborhood so I decided to try this place because I wanted some pho. Unfortunately they were very busy and so they told us to come back in an hour so we went next door to get appetizers. Shortly after sitting down at the other restaurant, they called us and told us to come back. I was a little confused on why the beef pho was not available during this time, they only said they had chicken or vegan available. I was so looking forward for a hearty soup on this cold winter night. We ordered the following below: -goi cuon - I thought this was pretty good and fresh and very tasty and there was something inside that was different which was jicama which I got was delicious. - lemon grass chicken - I thought it was pretty good and nice and grilled and moist. I do feel that the prices are a little higher than other places. I would have thought this dish would be a little less. - braised pork belly - The waiter raved about this two people in my party ordered this. I would say that I wish it was a little warmer when served and it was okay. Overall, I would say the food is good but I feel like the prices are a little bit high compared to other restaurants I've frequented. There's parking on the street with the meter so you can easily find a spot along the street.

Yelp
This restaurant has single handedly changed my perception of Vietnamese cuisine and turned it into one of my favorites. I come here every week and am always excited to try a new dish. Everything I've had from here, has been incredibly fresh, flavorful and generously priced. The chicken banh mi is also the best sandwich I've ever had, period. Service is always warm and friendly and the restaurant has a great ambience for dates. HEAVILY recommend, this place is a must try.

Yelp
Amazing local Vietnamese spot in Takoma Park. The service and food were amazing!! Everything madr fresh in their open concept kitchen. Cute decor inside with some Vietnamese products at the front of the restaurant. Definitely worth checking out!!!

Yelp
Enjoyed my dinner here. I was sad to learn they don't do banh mi for dinner and only have beef pho a couple days a week (Thursday and Sunday I believe). We came on a Monday night bc we were in the neighborhood. We didn't have a reservation and were told it would likely be an hour wait but it only ended up being about 20 minutes. I opted for the braised pork belly at our waiter's recommendation and it was very tasty. I also really loved the fried egg rolls. We were charged for someone else's drinks... they fixed it when we pointed it out but double check your receipt when you leave

Yelp
I had a impromptu dinner at this restaurant with friends, and I'm so pleased I did. There was a short wait on a Monday evening, so I would recommend planning ahead, but it was absolutely worth it. The food was exceptional, the ambiance was great, and our waiter was friendly and offered helpful suggestions. I would definitely comeback.

Yelp
Great atmosphere and superior service. Small menu but well prepared food. Tasty but small portions and over priced.

Yelp
The restaurant seemed inviting from the moment I walked in. I sat at the bar, which sometimes means slow/inattentive service, but this was not the case here! Everyone was friendly and consistently checked in to make sure my experience was positive. I ordered the vegan egg rolls, which were fresh and flavorful. I loved the dipping sauce as well. The bronzino was cooked to perfection! Perfectly crispy on the outside and flaky in the middle. My only complaint is that the portion was pretty small. I also tried the flan, which was faint in flavor, but I still enjoyed it. I am already looking forward to going back and trying other things!

Yelp
This place is new-ish and deserves all the praise! We stopped in for a weekend lunch and had great food and service. The place is very cute and well decorated and you can just tell the food is FRESH. As someone who doesn't eat pork or beef, the menu is so appealing to me as well. We had an order of the fresh spring rolls with shrimp and split a chicken pho. Both were delicious and we enjoyed thoroughly. The price point was great and we can't wait to return.

Yelp
A fine addition to the Takoma food scene and worth a visit. Friendly, prompt service, and a welcoming atmosphere make this restaurant worthy of checking out. The chicken pho was well received and even in its small size, there was plenty for one person. The pork belly banh mi was very tasty as well.. The turmeric tea and lychee mogu mogu were also good. The shrimp spring rolls were eaten quickly (although I don't like shrimp, my companion ate them both). The menu is still quite small and I hope they will continue to add more fare in the future. I would suggest a pork or chicken spring roll with more Thai basil. For the Banh Mi, my suggestions would be instead of mayo to have a lemongrass spread like they use in Hoi An. It would be great if they could get Vietnamese style French bread that it thinner and allows the fillings to be the star.

Yelp
A great addition to downtown Takoma Must eats: -Fern cakes - come in beautiful small plates to eat like an oyster shooter - "Crepes" - more like lettuce wraps that you put an egg-like "crepe" mixture in with pickled vegetables - Pork Belly Great classics of pho and spring rolls as well, along with yummy flan with a splash of Vietnamese coffee. Consider skipping: - We'd pass on the Pandan Jelly for dessert next time as it was not sweet at all to our American palate, but I'm sure it's authentic (I love less sweet Asian desserts, but usually they are sweetened more with fruit or use red beans but with some added sugar). Drinks are basically beer, wine and soda (lots of NA options!), but would love a cocktail addition (lemongrass, perhaps?) The ambiance is cute, but the lighting is a bit bright for dinner -- would prefer dimmer lighting.

Yelp
Finally got to check out the new place in town. Very strange to be in Mark's space and have it not be Mark's. But the place looks better than ever. Very stylishly done. The spring rolls were ok. But the bronzino was amazing -- just totally delicious and perfectly cooked. Will be back.

Yelp
Muoi Tieu--salt & pepper--is one of the first in the DMV serving traditional Vietnamese fare, that isn't pho (though they have one chicken pho), or some fusion thing. In particular, (as certainly Viet customers will attest to) the Thit Kho and the Banh Xeo -- are two family staples in every Viet family, where each has their distinct version. Muoi Tieu's thit kho trung was pretty good-- some sway towards the sweeter or salt (like mine), but theirs is somewhere in the middle (I couldn't tell if there was any nuoc mam used; if they do at all, it's very light use). Overall, a great addition to the TP Hood

Yelp
I love this place and come here from Bethesda because it is so much better than anything we have closer by. Easy parking and a pleasant interior withlots of hidden Star Wars stuff. Service is friendly and helpul. But I come for the food. Every place has summer rolls, but these are the best. There's some flavor in there that is different and way better. I've had almost everything on the menu. Many dishes can be vegetarian, which is nice. Fern cakes and salad are particularly good appetizers, as are the pork belly and vermichelli bowls for entrees, but you really can't go wrong.

Paula P.

Yelp
Charming restaurant in Takoma Park. Quaint restaurant with friendly staff. Had the braised pork belly (signature fatty pieces for those who like those bits). Very flavorful and full meal for dinner.

Rachel M.

Yelp
Got the rice noodle bowl and spring rolls - both were flavorful and filling. It can be hard finding Asian cuisines that cater to gluten free customers, but they really delivered on both the variety of what they offered and the taste itself. I ordered takeout and everything was smartly packaged - think banana leaves around the spring rolls to keep them from sticking and fish sauce tucked inside the bowl to keep it from spilling. Can't wait to go back!

Yelp
A delightful place for delicious, moderately priced Vietnamese food. The crepe was a standout, but really everything we ordered was delicious. Service was prompt and friendly, and it was nice to get a visit from the owner. Best of all, while the restaurant was almost full on a Thursday night, it was quiet enough that we could hear ourselves talk.

Xiomara Z.

Yelp
This is a poorly run restaurant. I'm watching 2 people behind the counter barely doing any cooking. 2 other people are just standing around barely doing anything and they only have one waitress with no one to assist her. Currently the restaurant is full and it is literally taking them 30 minutes to prepare a vermicelli bowl which is just grilled meat on top of noodles. There is no activity in the kitchen/ grill behind the bar and it looks like folks are just idling and standing around instead of preparing food. They also seem to cater to an American palate because they don't serve pho with beef and barely have any pork entrees. Pork is a major part of Vietnamese cuisine. It will take forever to get your food and the menu is limited. I can't recommend. The food is okay - nothing to write home about.

Yelp
Enjoyed the outdoor seating area. Tried the small dishes of Vietnamese Salad and Fried Chicken. Beautifully prepared and presented. Friendly and helpful service.

L T.

Yelp
Each dish on the menu is meticulously crafted with care and boasts surprising uniqueness. With Pho options of Vegan and Chicken, both varieties are bursting with flavor, requiring no additional condiments like hoisin sauce. Muoi Tieu caters excellently to vegans, offering exceptionally flavorful dishes that even picky eaters can enjoy without feeling like they're missing out on tasty meat options. Try vegan egg rolls, vegan Pho, vegan sizzling crepe, you won't be disappointed. Their flan is the best flan I've ever tasted. Infused with a rich coffee flavor, its smoothness is simply unmatched.

Yelp
Living in California, I am blessed to be exposed to best Vietnamese cuisines available. Last week while visiting the area just for a few days, I stumbled upon Muoi Tieu (Salt & Pepper) a lone Vietnamese restaurant in Takoma Park, MD, without much expectation. I was pleasantly surprised to find one of the best Vietnamese restaurants encountered. The crispy Soft Shelled Crab was heavenly. All dishes chosen were equally delicious. The place was simple yet clean. The two restrooms were spotless. The service was friendly yet attentive and prompt. I hope when I come back a few years from now, Muoi Tie is still there waiting for me.

Yelp
What an absolute treat to have this new spot (3 months old at the time of this review) in the neighborhood! I've tried 3/4 of the menu and everything always tastes so fresh. A few standouts to me are the Bun with grilled pork (pro tip: order the Cha Gio on the side and cut them up and add them to your salad), the steak chimichurri, and of course the Vietnamese coffee. Always served with kindness and respect. Add this to your "must check out" list if you're in the area!

Yelp
The restaurant is small but bright and inviting . The menu is quite limited and is split between small and large plates. We started with the Vietnamese rolls which were just ok - the rice wrap was very sticky and the filling lacked much taste. The peanut sauce was fine. For the main courses we chose the Pho (large) and a noodle bowl. Generally, pho is served with a variety of cuts of beef. Here the choices were chicken or tofu. The small pieces of chicken were tender but the broth lacked the flavor intensity of a good pho. May be the base of the pho was vegetarian instead of beef. The noodle bowl with tofu included lots of noodles and a few square pieces of tofu. The waitress recommended that the sauce should be poured over the dish. We followed her recommendations but overall the dish was bland and boring. The flan was quite good. The wine list is limited but the selections are interesting and the prices are quite reasonable.
