The service was amazing, though the server was definitely misleading us when he told us that the mole poblano was too small to split between two people. As two girls whose stomachs have steadily been shrinking during the course of our vacation through Mexico, just half of the serving of mole poblano would have been sufficient, but the soup we were led to order as well was delicious and light, so we don't have much of a complaint save for the increased price on our check.
However, the servers were amazing in dividing everything we ordered in half in advance, so that my dining partner and I could enjoy an amount of food that we could actually stomach, without ending up spending too much and wasting food on top of that. With how much food we got, I can't imagine finishing an entire serving of everything on my own, or perhaps when they divide they give a little extra?
As appetizers, a server came around with fresh warm rolls, of two types that I forget now, but I tried both and couldn't really tell a major difference. One might have been a bit more sour, but with butter they both just tasted like white bread rolls. As another appetizer, they brought out a blend of what looked like pumpkin seeds, a pumpkin blend, and chicken mixed together on a small spoon. It was a bit confusing at first if we were meant to just eat it as it was, but after we got over this initial confusion and stuck the spoon in our mouths it was quite delicious!
The soup came with a variety of vegetables and cheese blocks piled in a cute little cylinder, atop which the server poured from a pitcher a good amount of chicken broth. It was light yet flavorful, and left me some room for the main course, the most important part of this experience.
The mole poblano we ordered with chicken, and it came with corn tortillas to wrap the chicken, as well as the beans and rice if we so desired to make a burrito. The sauces added that kick of spice that I crave with every meal, though my dining partner was satisfied with the spice of the dish without any additional sauces, so it's definitely up to you how spicy you want your tacos to be. The mole poblano itself was strangely flavored at first, as the chocolate notes stood out in contrast to the other flavors, but as I continued to eat, it got better and better...? Such is the case of trying new dishes, I suppose.
The tamale looking thing that came with the mole poblano tasted like licorice, which was unexpected. We used it as a palette cleanser from the strong flavors in the mole poblano, and in my case, to calm my mouth after having engulfed it in the flames of probably too much hot sauce.
Overall, a great first experience of (hopefully authentic) mole poblano, though I'm not really sold on the dish. I don't know if I would try that particular dish again, but I have no complaints about the restaurant itself!
