Google
Very good comfort food, beer selection & fast and attentive service. During cold months they have real wood burning fireplace & right now (June 2024) their TV shows Euro football. In addition, almost every other night past 9PM there's live music. If visiting first time - Irish stew or Bangers & Mash with draft beer - you should be full. And this will be under $25 with tips. The downside - it's popular place, busy even during lunch time or early evening.

Google
Staff was friendly, effective, and flexible. Atmosphere was okay but crowded. And tables were close together. I had the fish and chips then the bread pudding. Fish was okay, could of had more chips. Doubt the chips made up a whole potato. The bread pudding was traditional so no surprises there. Good but nothing special. My group all had the same issues- nothing bad just...meh.

Google
St Patrick's day experience only. Very crowded and extremely loud so if you're into yelling at other parties at your table, then St Patrick's night is the night to go to an Irish Pub. Food was good. Drinks were solid. Had a reservation with people already seated, but still were not let in due to maximum occupancy. Will return to experience normal, non celebretory vibe.

Google
Murphys Tavern offers a trip to the past where good drinks were poured strong and the good Irish food kept you upright on your feet. I hosted a work dinner recently and everyone really enjoyed the outing except for the lack of Air Conditioning given it was 80+ degrees outside. From the Irish Egg Rolls to the Shepherds Pie everyone enjoyed a delicious meal. Whether you like a good beer or Irish whiskey all can be found and enjoyed. The service was top notch for the entire meal. It was truly a great experience and one I hope to repeat soon especially when they fix the air conditioning.

Google
I have been coming to Murphy's for decades and it is comforting to know that some things never change! The food is simple and delicious... I almost always have fish and chips (cod) or the Irish Stew. I changed it up by trying the Irish egg rolls and they were a delicious start to the meal. The live music makes this place festive and fun!

Google
Great Irish fare. Bangers and Mash were excellent 👌. They have Kilkenny on tap. Only place I have found this beer in the states. Live music was fun. Great evening out in Alexandria's old town.

Google
Husband and I stopped in post-Halloween trick or treating festivities to have dinner. Loved the laid back, welcoming energy of the place. The waiter was extremely attentive and hard-working. All the staff were great and in good spirits. Nice beer selection and good comfort food for the cold weather. Stayed long enough to enough the musician who startef playing around 8p. Can't wait to go back.

Google
Came here at the end of the night and they had a live band and everything. Service was great, reasonably priced, good selection of beers 🍻 and liquors as well. The atmosphere was also great 👍. Hockey on the teli as well. Definitely would come back here.

Yelp
Any place that's home to the New England Patriots, is a place I want to be at. The Irish breakfast works. Pancakes, hash browns, and champagne hits the spot. They have pretty decent food, for all of their meals. It's not fancy but I'd say for the area, a rather good value. Yet I go more for the party atmosphere. The staff here are truly excellent. You'll feel welcome. The bar is of decent size, and there are two floors. Can it get crowded? Sure but more opportunity for amusement. Nice crowd of folks here. Please drink responsibly with a designated driver/babysitter. Cheers to all at Murphy's!

Yelp
Murphy's Grand Irish Pub; is very solid. I have been here a few times and always had a tasty pint of Guinness. Friendly service. Filling food. Good price points. If you want to relax and enjoy an adult beverage; Murphy's is my go-to place. Nice variety of beers. Always cold and tasty. As you walk in the front door, there is an entrance to the upstairs bar/restaurant and the main bar. The main bar is 40/50 feet long. Plenty of bar seats and tables. If you're looking for sports on TV. You may be out of luck depending on where you sit. Let's say you want to watch March Madness your choice of games may be small since there is one small TV behind the bar and two or so TVs in the main dining room. Which are not ideally placed. The upstairs bar may have a few more TVs. Overall, Murphy's Grand Irish Pub does a great job. Service good. Beer cold. Lots of regulars. Large food portions. Easy on the pocket. Good for groups. Outdoor seating. What else can I say; have fun...

Yelp
Came here for a work lunch. My stars are for the service and my drink. Unfortunately I can't find the name of the drink on their website but it was delicious. Like a Shirley temple with alcohol. I ordered the fish and chips (it's a pub, cmon) and while the fish was batter well it was super bland. Other than that service was quick and decent enough. Atmosphere is what you'd expect from a pub, nothing notable or worth writing home about.

Lou C.

Yelp
Come for the draft beers, eat elsewhere. Service was pretty bleak and main dishes came out about 3 minutes after appetizers, which made for a very crowded table. The spinach artichoke dip was very dry and the corned beef on the Reuben was a step down from deli sliced corned beef (plasticky). The chicken tenders and the wings were pretty good. It's not a huge place, and there is a stage to one side so they apparently have music on the weekends. Long-ish bar and a decent selection of beer and liquors.

AJ S.

Yelp
The food is amazing I don't care what you get it's good. We've had near everything on the menu and I can't complain. We came after promotion ceremony and let me tell you once we got to the door we were seated and our waitress was outstanding. The music was really nice as always when we've came. It's certainly makes you feel welcomed! It is a place to go if in town to enjoy local Irish food , good Irish music and local fun.

Kevin M.

Yelp
Better than average Irish Pub! I visited the day after St. Patrick's Day, so they may have been just a little off. There was a little cleaning that still needed to be done. But, the service was great. The beer was cold, and the food was tasty. I'd come back for sure!

Maggie M.

Yelp
I came here late on a Saturday night with friends. I can't speak to the food because we all only ordered Guinness, but the vibe was great. The guy doing the live music was both a great musician and a showman. Service was fast and accurate, despite the place being absolutely packed! This is definitely a great late night spot in Old Town.

Sam p.

Yelp
I like the setting. Baked oysters were good. Nice place to hang out. Good cold beer.

Chandler D.

Yelp
Great spot in Old town! Definitely a bit of a divey spot but always a good thing in Old Town! They have live music in the weekends and the service here is awesome! I ordered the autumn mule and it was absolutely delicious!

J C.

Yelp
Figured it was time to try another Irish Pub, other than O'Connells. Murphy's did not disappoint. The appearance was what one should expect in a Pub and we were waited on promptly. Of course, a Kilkenny was the first request and it was poured perfectly. Had the shepherd's pie which was some of the best I've eaten. A companion had a Rachel sandwich and I sampled the corned beef. It was tender and had a very good flavor. Overall this is another great Old Town Irish experience which I would recommend to anyone.

Daira R.

Yelp
I'm coming back weekly and you can't stop me. Came in for Tuesday night trivia and had a great time. The host was really good. The host can really make or break a trivia experience. So, he made it for us. The service was a liiiiiitttlllleeeee slow but they were very busy - so it wasn't a problem for us. It was a bummer there was no non-alcoholic wines or mocktails - but the ginger ale was flowing! I got the the meat pie thing, and woowee it was delicious! 10/10. Imma get it with mashed potatoes next time I think. My husband got the burger (half price happy hour special) and really enjoyed it. I checked in on Yelp and there was a coupon for a free Apple crisp and the Apple crisp IS THE STAR OF THE SHOW. Mein Gott, war das lecker (my god it was delicious)! And at the end, instead of a $250 tab it was like $50. Anyway, wish I could do 4.5 stars, but I can't so 4 stars rounded up.

Taylor M.

Yelp
Greeted immediately upon entry and taken to the back where it was quiet. After a weekend of disappointing "restaurant food," this was a welcome change. Fresh tomato and lettuce on my burger. The meat cooked to perfection and the cheese melted how I like it. Cool artwork on the wall and a pretty grand fireplace behind us. Jimmy M. was a great server and "Happy Birthday" to him.

Shannon E.

Yelp
Just a fun place to gather for good food, good drinks and great entertainment. We enjoyed the Irish breakfast, the Guinness burger and the Sheppard's pie.

Michelle V.

Yelp
The food was good as usual but I've never seen anyone so allergic to work as our server Guido H. When he wasn't bragging to the bartender about getting a giant tip from a heavily inebriated patron he was glued to his phone. Getting service was like pulling teeth... Thus only 3 stars

Samantha L.

Yelp
My friends and I gathered at Murphy's Grand Irish Pub. The second floor was much tamer than the first floor. It was nice and cozy by the fireplace. Jimmy took care of our large party and ensured that we were hydrated. My fiancé enjoyed two pints of New Realm Hazy Like A Fox (NEIPA) while I enjoyed two Green Tea cocktails.

Jacob A.

Yelp
I haven't been here in a few years due to being away for work, brought a new coworker with me who had never been to DC before. I love coming to Murphy's and getting great food and a good environment. Sorry for the already eaten picture, I was hungry haha. We also had the spinach and artichoke dip and my coworker had the Jameson steak which he loved.

Sophia M.

Yelp
A huge thanks to Sean Maguire and Murphy's for hosting me for my meet & greet for State Senate with my special guest Gwen Hickman for U.S. Senate. The staff was very hospitable and the food was great. Murphy's has always been my go-to local bar and I look forward to continue to support! Check out my website to follow where we will be next! www.sophia4va.com

Yelp
We came here soon after arriving in town looking for a drink and snack. We just ordered a drink and a few appetizers to share. The service was great and quick. The food exceeded expectations for an Irish pub/appetizers. Definitely hit the spot

Jay F.

Yelp
Stopped in for tail end of Happy Hour (4pm - 7pm) for some incredible apps. $5 apps (aside from the seafood options) and $0.65 wings. What a deal!! Opted for Irish egg rolls, Spin & Artichoke dip, and wings. Stellar all around.

Joe B.

Yelp
Maybe if I was a little more drunk. Cramped and dirty environment to be expected at a pub. Walked in and immediately ass to balls with a random dude but I was determined to try a shepherds pie so I left and doordashed it. Very unimpressed but I'm sure it's great for some people. Maybe willing to try again but seems like the place that would ash a cig in my nachos after reading this

Stacey C.

Yelp
I had been going to Murphy's for many years and have been a regular for a while now. I love this place! Always a greeting and a chat from the bartenders, the manager, the servers, and the bouncers. Everyone at Murphy's is super-friendly and makes me feel welcome, especially if I stop by on my own. If you are a local, there is always someone you know around. If you are not, talk to the locals, they know what's up and can teach you the words to the Irish songs that play Thursday-Saturday nights. I do love meeting out-of-town visitors and watching them enjoy the Murphy's experience. I absolutely love the Irish tunes to go along with my pint of Guinness. My favorite meal on the menu has to be the Guinness Burger, and the apple crisp is delicious. If you are out for a night of fun in Old Town, Murphy's is definitely the place to be.

Aida D.

Yelp
My partner and I went to the pub without much thought. We were visiting, and it was cold outside. The restaurant was packed on a Sunday afternoon, our waitress recommended the brunch menu so we ordered the eggs Benedict on crab cakes. We got the Irish coffee with Guinness to go with it too. The meal came out and it was phenomenal, the eggs were done just right and the crab cakes tasted so good. The drinks were on point, and my partner confirmed since he's been to Ireland before. We then decided to wing it and got some oysters and it was fresh and light. Overall, I give this place 5 stars simply for the ambience, food, drinks being on point. Our waitress was super cheery and so kind too, we sure left with satisfaction and happy for the pleasant surprise that exceeded our expectations.

Sarah S.

Yelp
It stunk in there, bar tender was not friendly or professional and got angry when I asked why the fish and chips had NO chips just 6 round potato patties which he called cottage fries...I grew up there and these are not cottage fries. Regardless he said 'well you should have asked for fries". to which I responded "I thought I did when I ordered fish and chips? Chips are called fries over here right?" He just huffed and walked off! Sadly I had paid to-go and left a tip ahead of time. Never again. It was much better 10 years ago when I used to go all the time.

Will M.

Yelp
My favorite place in old town to grab a beer! It's an Irish pub but with a splash of a dive bar. Bartenders are always super attentive. Usually don't get cocktails but there is a wide range of whiskey options. The food is not going to blow your mind but the corned beef is what I would recommend. There is almost always live music and no cover which is unusual for the dmv.

Bill Y.

Yelp
BLUF: fair price and pretty good food, but service was lacking I went with a large group for brunch on a Sunday. The place was pretty full. The menu had a nice variety of options, and all very reasonably priced, especially for Old Town Alexandria. I got a sausage and biscuit plate. It was actually pretty good, but a consisted of just one biscuit with gravy on it which was actually a pretty small serving for what's supposed to be a biscuit and gravy meal. It came with a second biscuit but the biscuit was just sitting there playing with no gravy. It does come with a side of apples which is pretty tasty and some very good potatoes. But if I'm getting sausage gravy and biscuits I would much rather have had two biscuits with sausage gravy on them than one with sausage gravy and one plain. Several of my companions ordered pancakes which they enjoyed very much. Overall everyone agreed the food was good, not spectacular but good. The service lacked a little. Went serving our table our waiter just stood at one end and made us pass plates from one end to the other. He pretty much did everything from one end of the table and ignore the other end, to include not giving us utensils until we asked several times. And even then he had them passed down from the other end of the table. The same was true what we had to pay our checks, with him just handing them to one end of the table and having them passed down to everybody at the other end. I would go back because the food was pretty good and reasonably priced.

Megan W.

Yelp
I love the atmosphere of this place. If you want a relaxing vibe with good beer, I feel like this is a great place! I did not get the brunch, but it looked very good. The service was also very helpful and friendly.

Shay E.

Yelp
Huge servings - so much flavor! The shepherd's pie was some of the best I've ever had. The kids cheeseburger was fresh and flavorful. The salsa was a bit more thin than we prefer but it had great flavor. My husband had the stew and said it was also very tasty and had great flavor. We were visiting from out of town but this will be a must-have any time we visit!

Ellie D.

Yelp
Average fair at a fun pub. They had live music after 8:30pm the night we went (acoustic guitarist). I've eaten here before and while I don't remember being knocked out by the food I did enjoy it, so my average rating seems pretty fair across the board. What I got: Lentil soup with Irish soda bread - 3*. Nothing spectacular. When I think lentil soup I thought of mostly lentils but this soup is more half veggies and half lentils. The Irish bread tasted a little freezer burnt to me, it was better when soaked in the soup. Mozzarella sticks - 4* normal mozzarella sticks that hit the spot.

Veronica S.

Yelp
Bartender can't make a mocktail, so drink beer! NO means NO.. CONSENT... worse, the female bartender should always be on the side of a Female client. An old drunk dude, walk by me at the bar and grab my leg and say "hi" I remove his hand and yelled at him. He proceed to sit and then HE complained at the bartender. She didn't do shit, handle another beer. She then asked ME what happen after they paid her. When I explained THEN she acted like she care. She mentioned that they have cameras and they can look at them TOMORROW. Manager never came out. Thank you not sure if I feel comfortable coming to this bar or recommend to any of my fiends that I was planning on inviting.

Theresa M.

Yelp
A fun place to go to with friends - casual, plenty of menu items to choose from, and a fun place to have a beer or two. We all enjoyed our food. Three of us had the crab cake, and, although we thought it was good, we all agreed it had a little too much filler. I was hoping for more of a Maryland crab cake. What I really enjoyed was the Irish egg rolls - corned beef, potatoes, and cabbage in an egg roll wrapper. Delicious! I would have preferred the mustard with it but for some reason we got a soy sauce type dip which turned out tasty, too. The beer our waitress suggested. since there was no Blue Moon, turned out to be a good choice, as well. One friend enjoyed her fish and chips, and the mozzarella sticks were hot and tasty, too! We all enjoyed the chips with our sandwiches. So good! Our waitress was awesome - so friendly and helpful with a great sense of humor - check them out! PS We really enjoyed our Apple Crisp and Ice cream - great surprise when we checked in on the Yelp App!

Jim W.

Yelp
A good, traditional Irish Bar. Nothing great to look at but certainly pretty good food, a very good selection of beers and Irish music now and then. Of all the restaurants in Old Town, this is one NOT to pass up...just don't expect gourmet food.

MaraLee L.

Yelp
If you're looking for a classic Irish pub, this is your place. The ambience, the food, the drink are all spot on! We stopped in on the way up to DC and were lucky enough to find our first choice dinner joint was not serving dinner. Again, lucky for us cause we had the most marvelous time here at Murphy's. Our waitress was so kind, friendly, and fast. She was working lots of tables, but we never felt rushed or forgotten. Big kudos to her. She also made great recommendations. Whereas we almost all were gonna get burgers, we ended up trying lots of options. My friends got the shrimp tacos, crab cake sandwich and a Murphys Burger. I got the French Dip. While I felt weird order something with French in the name at an Irish pub, the waitress recommendation was a good one cause it was delicious! I'm also a cider fan and was excited to see they had Magners on the menu! Got the pear flavor and was not disappointed! My friend's husband, of course, got the classic Guinness. When I checked in we also got a free dessert, so we went with the apple crisp. It was not to bad at all! We all split it then enjoyed the ambience for a second before heading out to free up our table for the ever growing crowd. I can definitely see why this place is a crowd pleaser. Plenty of options and drinks. We have marked this place as a sure fire return restaurant!

Lottie Y.

Yelp
Great location with nice outdoor seating. I liked the Irish sausage the most. It's quite popular place and the service was quick.

Susan H.

Yelp
We were in Old Town Alexandria on a Wednesday (which is a good time to visit as the sidewalks are far less crowded than on the weekends). When deciding where to have dinner, we did some research and came upon Murphy's. Since my husband likes the food in Irish Pubs and the prices were reasonable, we decided to give it a try. We were here around 4:30 p.m. The bar was just about full and a large party was sitting in the dining area. Upon entering, there was no one to seat us and no signage telling us what was up with that. The bartender saw us and said something. Since it was loud in there, we couldn't hear him. Finally, he raised his voice. At the same time, a woman sitting at the bar actually yelled at us! It took a rude greeting to figure that we were to seat ourselves. At that point, I was tempted to walk out of the place. We picked a spot and at that point, things got better. Our server, Erin, wasted no time coming to our table. She was friendly and efficient. To drink, we both had ginger ale. Then we both ordered Bangers and Mash, which consists of 2 sausages (one was beef, the other pork), mashed potatoes topped with gravy and green peas. The meal was okay. I liked the pork sausage which had sage in it. The beef one was very bland. The gravy was full bodied and flavorful. My husband gladly ate most of my beef sausage as I didn't care for it. This was a very reasonably priced dinner, all things considered. Before the tip, it came to just under $30. We thank Erin for making our dining experience pleasant which more than made up for the rude greeting. A bit of advice to management---put up a sign in the entryway telling customers to seat themselves. It's not that hard to do so. Not everybody who comes in there is a regular...

Holly And T.

Yelp
Fantastic bread pudding and you couldn't get more Irish in a pub! Loved it! Gotta love a place that has stained glass in gnomes! You can have a pint and enjoy yourselves!

Claudia Virginia A.

Yelp
For the amount of time that I've been coming to Murphy's Irish Pub, I have fallen in love with many of the food items provided! The service is great! The location is within a 30 minute walk from King Street Metro! The restaurant is very rustic and warm welcoming! Where does one go for great food, high energy, live music everyday?? Why Murphy's Irish Pub in Olde Town Alexandria Virginia of course!! See you next time!!

Mike S.

Yelp
The pho Irish coffee was FANTASTIC, however, the Shepherd's pie was reminiscent of high school lunchroom food; not horrible, but not great either. If you're not a big fan of meh' and salt, skip the Shepherds Pie! I was really disappointed as Murphy's Grand Irish Pub was highly recommended!

Robin F.

Yelp
Maddy was so fun! got our bit o honey drinks & the beer for guys! yum yum! Irish soda bread was pretty good. It's steak night. super 1st responder supporters Lodi, Butte, Vallejo, CHP, Fairfield, Chico, San Jose, Palo Alto, Old CA representing! True Irish bar!

Frankie N.

Yelp
I love Murphy's! This is the place I always come to when I want free live music! Their Guinness is good and their late night snacks hit when you're out drinking. I love their fries and onion rings! Their spinach artichoke dip is ok. But make sure to get the onion rings or fries. Upstairs is usually a more pop guitarist singing. Usually for the younger crowd. Downstairs is where the Irish music is, which is where I prefer to go! I love this place and will keep coming back!

Claudia Virginia A.

Yelp
It was a pleasure being able to close the 2022 Summer Season with live music and great food too! I had the Apple Cranraisins Walnut Salad! So many different flavors and textures that made my tastebuds go on a psychedelic roller-coaster ride! The Apple Cider Vinegrette was out of this world! I recommend it! Thanks again and see you soon!

Seth N.

Yelp
Place kinda sucks. Live Music has been terrible every time I've come. Twice in a row now, it has been one guy wailing at the top of his lungs into a microphone and strumming an acoustic guitar. I had to yell to speak to people across from me and to my side.

Allan T.

Yelp
In just about the most touristy part of Old Town, Murphy's stands out as a regulars' hangout that still draws. Comfortable rustic decor, beat but homey (borderline old & musty). Happy hours specials are a great deal as appetizers are 1/2 price and fresh oysters are 75 cents each. Oysters were a bit deflated (not plump) but still tasty and fresh. (They farm their own oysters!) "Beer battered" Fish and chips were actually breaded and not batter fried somewhat disappointingly. Still fresh and delicious, cooked perfectly. We shared one order and they nicely plated for 2; considerate & solicitous. Good, prompt and pleasant service. Will return for the quality, value & service.

Thomas K.

Yelp
Great food, great ambiance. A wonderful neighborhood spot. And a great place for Irish music!

Carol M.

Yelp
This is a traditional Irish Pub. I had fish and chips which was amazing. My friend had bangers and mash which he was also thrilled with. Have a great selection of beers you're into that. Our meals were amazing. I got apple crisp for dessert that was not quite as thrilled with that. It was a little overdone and there was way too much cinnamon. The cinnamon was pretty much all you can taste. The service was excellent. Staff was very friendly. I wish I had taken pictures of the interior because it had the feel of what I would expect from an Irish tavern.

Jackie B.

Yelp
The egg rolls are why i don't hate the food here. This is Kraft mac and cheese with cheddar cheese on top. I still ate it don't get me wrong, but golly if you're making it Kraft, at least make them shapes.

Brian D.

Yelp
This place was hopping at 12:30 on a Tuesday night and the kitchen was still open. Ten Stars for wings and skins. Then the next night some old dude played the bagpipes at 1am. Yes, I came back. This place is legendary.

Michael R.

Yelp
Really great service and food. I got the Murphy burger and onion rings. Both were tasty. They had live music and the guy playing was really good as well so that was a nice little bonus.

Leigh W.

Yelp
Came here for dinner recently. Our server was amazing. We each tried something different from the menu and we're pleasantly surprised. Definitely worth checking out if you are in the area.

Ashley G.

Yelp
Super crowded but the bar did a good job of getting to everyone. I only got drinks here, which were fine, so I can't speak to the food. Clearly a popular spot.

Nina R.

Yelp
Murphy's is always a great time! I've been here several times over the years. I recently came here for New Year Eve celebrations with a group of 7 people. Our waitress was absolutely amazing, and I even told her Manager personally how impressed we were. Tending to a group can be challenging, especially on a hectic holiday. We received great, personalized service so I am giving 5 stars for service. I will be back!! The food could have had more flavor. Giving that 3 stars. We had a 4-course meal including two appetizers, entree and desert, and champagne toast. The crab bisque was delicious. The soup creamy with nice small bites of crab, and well seasoned with the right amount of spice. The salad was fresh, crisp and refreshing. I ordered the Salmon entree. The steamed broccoli was hard to cut, so I sent it back so it could be more edible and more tender and they fixed it and sent out a corrected order of broccoli. They mixed up my order and sent out rice instead of baked potato. They fixed that as well. The salmon had a white cream dill sauce, which was tasty. Everything just needed salt and pepper. Everyone enjoyed their food, no complaints other than the lamb was a little fatty. The options for desert was either chocolate cake or apple crisp, either with vanilla ice cream. I had the apple crisp and it was so yummy. Everyone loved the desert. We all got a glass of champagne for the New Year toast at midnight. The environment is festive, fun, live entertainment with great guy singing Irish songs and he told you how to sing them and how to clap along. Those songs are so much fun and hilarious!! There are two levels to the restaurant. We were downstairs. Upstairs had dancing and a small live band. We forgot to hang out there after our meal. I wish I had stayed there a little longer! I will be back as soon as I can!
