The Best Irish Bars in Seattle | Eater Seattle

"Murphy’s has been a Wallingford institution since opening in 1981, and claims to be Seattle’s first Irish pub. Whether or not that’s wholly accurate, it’s at the very least the longest-running Irish pub still in existence within Seattle city limits. Though it went through a decade of malaise after founder Chris Barnes sold it in 2001, its current owners have restored its charm ever since taking over in 2015. Murphy’s checks every single box you could want in this type of bar: There’s plenty of rustic atmosphere with prominent woodwork, dark walls, stained glass accents, and a fireplace. There’s abundant seating to accommodate groups, including a snug sofa and coffee table area, along with an inviting back patio. There’s a wide variety of beer on draft, with Irish essentials such as Harp, Smithwick’s, Kilkenny, and (of course) Guinness in addition to local brews, augmented by a good selection of whiskey. The kitchen hits the bullseye with unfussy yet well-crafted Irish-American classics: bangers and mash, corned beef and cabbage, Murphy’s stout beef stew, shepherd’s pie, Irish brown bread. There’s also exemplary cod and chips, as well as a crowd-favorite reuben, a “Paddy melt,” and salt and vinegar potato chips, among other standards. There’s live Americana and Irish music on weekends, along with an Irish jam on Mondays. And the staff is first-name-basis friendly, giving delighted greetings to regulars like, “There she is!” Murphy’s is the kind of Irish pub Irish pubs go to." - Mark DeJoy

Your Guide to a Seattle St. Patrick’s Day | Eater

"Seattle’s oldest Irish bar and a St. Patrick’s Day bucket-list destination, this cozy, lived-in pub goes all out with live Irish music, dance performances, and island-inspired fare. Expect traditional dishes like bangers and mash, proper fish and chips, and Irish whiskey bread pudding, along with classic Irish Coffees made with Jameson; it will be crowded, but the warmth and familiarity of the space make it feel like home amid the revelry." - Vox Creative

We went here last week for lunch! We split the stew, cottage pie, and mac and cheese. The stew is very thick. I enjoyed it. It has a really good flavor. The cottage pie is very pepper heavy. The mashed potatoes are good. Instead of ground meat like I'm used to, they have chunks of beef, similar to the stew. The mac and cheese was okay. It's very thick, but the flavor wasn't as sharp as I was expecting. I did enjoy it, it just fell a little flat. There's much better mac and cheese in the city. They have a decent beer selection and a full bar. The man working was nice enough. The building is quite pretty- lots of stained glass. Plus, a small, free parking lot in the back!

Google
I was really pleasantly surprised. The food was excellent. I don’t mean it like that. I just was not expecting it to be so good and so inexpensive. The fish tacos are 16 and they give you a lot of food. A great spot. My wife got chicken tacos and a steak and hers were great too. Her Moscow mule was really good as well.

I wish I knew the name of the server but he was the kindest, nicest I’ve had in a while. Food is actually pretty good and arrived fast; it isn’t crazy expensive either. Drinks are pretty good too!! It does get crowded fast. Lots of seating as well!

Google
This is a great Irish pub! They have a well-stocked bar and a great menu that includes several Irish menu dishes. I had fish and chips, which were great! It came with 3 pieces of fish, so the portion was perfect. They also have a nice patio area in the back. Parking is street parking or paid lots. I visited on a Wednesday and was able to get a spot out front just a few spaces down from the entrance. They do have live music, though they didn't on the day I attended.

Google
Very classic looking Irish pub that serves really excellent food at a reasonable price. We ate on a Tuesday and came early for dinner to avoid the crowd that rolled in for the Tuesday Trivia Night, which starts after 7pm.

Google
Nice local Irish pub with outstanding food and solid beverages. The Shepherd’s pie and fish were both very good.

Google
Good food, good service, very loud, very hot. This was before the band started playing. Great music that partially made up for the mind melting heat. It was hard to hear myself think, but what can you expect from a lively pub though. And we need more Irish places, so I would definitely come back! Most likely in fall or winter time to beat the heat 🤣

Google
Great location and awesome food. The service was top notch. I got the Ruben which was really good. I opted for extra crout and dressing. The portion was fitting as I needed a to go box. Great atmosphere and has live bands on occasion. All the food looked and smelled so good.

Yelp
A cute, cozy pub with good Irish food! We all enjoyed our meals (though they are definitely hearty & rich!). I've tried twice now to attend trivia night but the place is always packed! Must have to get there very early to snag a slot on tues/Thurs nights.

Yelp
Seattle's oldest Irish pub. Great place to pop into for a sandwich and a cold brew and the service was amazing. Only one person during lunch but a lot of people and she ran it like a pro, hats off to her. My Reuben was outstanding. Food is good, nice authentic Irish feel to the place. Definitely worth checking out.

Yelp
Traditional Irish Pub, late night food great beers on tap and the best corned beef Reuben sandwich well worth going even if it for that.

Yelp
On a quiet Wednesday night, the atmosphere at this pub transported me to Ireland with its charming decor and lively music. Despite being short-staffed, the bartender was fantastic--friendly and helpful. Although the kitchen was closed, I enjoyed a delicious draft cider. A pleasant experience overall, and I appreciated the welcoming ambiance.
google avatar

Colie B.

Yelp
Oldest pub in Seattle. Great beers, service, amazing Reuben, and fries with gravy. Recommend.

Yelp
A fun little Irish pub nestled into the heart of Wallingford -- it's a no-frills spot with tables, booths, and bar seating. They serve up classic Irish pub fare which is filling and tasty, as well as a selection of beers on draft. They have a small stage, occasionally featuring performers. It's a fun spot to catch a game and I'm sure that it would be really fun on St. Patrick's!

Yelp
I came here years ago at the wee hours of the night! We sat near the fireplace! It was my birthday and I missed a flight to be with my bf. My friend came to meet me. I think it was the only place opened near by. I didn't order alcohol at all but the vibe was right :) Now I find myself parked close and it's the only place open. Feels very "How I Met Your Mother" vibe. Food is good. The size of the restaurant is nice.

Yelp
My friends and I came to Murphy's for the first time this past St. Patrick's Day. As expected, this Irish pub was booming with people. We arrived around midnight and were able to get in without having to wait in line. Note there is a $10 cover fee CASH ONLY when you enter. I'm not sure if they have a cover fee every night, or if it's only because they had live music that night. My group made our way to the bar and we're able to get service within ten minutes. Most of my friends got Guinness, but I opted for a simple Two Towns Cider on tap ($9 plus tip). The cider was crisp and fresh. After grabbing our drinks, we found a standing spot in the back as all tables were taken. We probably could've found seating outside on the patio though. We were hoping the kitchen would still be open, but there kitchen closes at 11 or 12 (I couldn't find an exact time anywhere). I was a little disappointed because their famous Reuben sandwich looks absolutely delicious and so I'll have to come back for that! The restaurant itself isn't super clean if I'm being honest. The outdoor patio is fine, but the floors inside are stickier than a frat house floor. It was like I was stepping in honey with every foot forward. There was also food on the ground and someone else's leftover food sitting on the window ledge that wasn't picked up until we left. The live music was decent and the lineup had a good selection of songs. It was very loud, but it was a St. Patty's Day party after all. Overall: 4/5 for drinks, 3/5 for service, 2.5/5 for atmosphere

Yelp
Super friendly staff and consistently great pub food. Go fairly often and am never disappointed. The wallyhood chicken sandwich is a real standout.

Yelp
Stopped by this Irish pub for a meal on Sunday. The service was great, love the bartender/waitress! The meat was a bit bland and underwhelming, we weren't sure if that is an Irish thing or this spot in particular does season their meat/stew. Would be willing to try other things on their menu as it is very extensive!. The whiskey bread pudding with Guinness was the best part.

Angie B.

Yelp
I love this place. Everyone that works here is so nice, and so welcoming. Our group has accidentally become regulars because we always have the best time here. And the food is way better than it needs to be!! It's so good! Shout out especially to Ben, Dillon and Max!
google avatar

Yelp
Fiiinaaalllyyy properly made fish and chips!!! They were awesome. We also had the Scottish eggs and the beef stew that did not come in a bread bowl but was adequately paired with a slice of sourdough buttered bread that was amazing, the bowl might have been too much! The bar tender made me a "black velvet" (Guinness and strawberry cider) it was amazing. The atmosphere was cool and laid back, they had a live band playing soulful bluesy music, good crowd and the service was awesome. Will definitely come back whenever we're in Seattle.

Yelp
This place is exactly as one would expect it to be. Classic pub food and friendly servers. Only downside was having to get up to get water at a sit down restaurant. Would consider going back for trivia

Yelp
21+ cute little joint. The service was good, the drinks were tasty. The food was awesome. We tried the Irish nachos, the crispy brussel sprouts, and the shepherds pie. The Irish nachos were perfectly cooked, and all of the toppings were perfect compliments to the potatoes. I wish I had ordered no jalapeños because I don't do spicy, but after pulling them off the spice wasn't too bad. The Brussels were well seasoned and the bacon and pecans were crispy compliments. I wish the Brussels themselves were a little crispier, but the flavor was awesome. The shepherd's pie was good, not over the top delicious, but good. The bread was decent. It was hearty and earthy and went well with the gravy. Overall, a super good experience. I would definitely come back if I'm ever in the area.

Yelp
We went to Murphy's for the first time last night to celebrate getting married. My wife's last name is Murphy so I decided to have us go to Murphy's to surprise her and there were 6 of us in total. We sat down and after we were all there, an employee came over to our table to check everyone's IDs. My wife is in the navy and she showed her military ID, which has her birthdate and photo, and is accepted everywhere as a valid form of ID. The employee informed her that the bar policy was that only driver's licenses were accepted and her military ID did not show what she needed to be able to be served. We were not talking about the military or politics and I'm not sure why he refused to accept that form of ID. She had her drivers license as well and so he said she was ok. But then he did not return to our table to take our order, but was serving tables immediately next to us. Wouldn't even make eye contact. He told my wife that he was a marine, which is obviously false since he would know that it's accepted everywhere if he had served and didn't even know where to look for the birthday. That false valor in addition to his disrespectful treatment of us and refusal to serve us is unacceptable. We left the pub after waiting for him to take our order for a good 10 minutes.

Yelp
The best Irish pub I've ever been to! Awesome staff, atmosphere, food (including the specials) and selection of beers especially the Guinness! You definitely must stop by on a Thursday night for their trivia. I've never done a trivia like theirs, and now I don't want to play trivia anywhere else! The layout of trivia is just so unique and is very interactive. Get there early though because it gets packed! We also stopped by one morning to try the Irish breakfast, and it was everything I hoped for (and more). Delicious and filling. Can't wait to go back and visit again soon!

Yelp
Got a black and tan, bartender argued with me that it was a half and half whatever that is, real jerk. ordered the special crisp calamari. It was awful. It was so crisp it exploded in your mouth.
google avatar

Yelp
Consistently excellent place to be. Last visit was over twenty years ago and the ambiance and craic are still spot on. Lovely food and great service. Beer is always good. Just wish they had Murphy's on tap or if they could resurrect Caffreys....

William M.

Yelp
Great food, beverages, and atmosphere! The food has been great, everything I've tried has been amazing. This is my go to spot in Seattle!!

Yelp
I love to go for happy hour, where they have great drink prices and tasty food. It is a great bargain.

Yelp
Classic pub with Guinness and games. Always a great time when I'm at Murphy's with friends.
google avatar

Yelp
This is one of my favorite places in Seattle. I had my first date with my boyfriend here and feel a deep connection to Irish pubs in general. The food Ive had is great, always meant to go on the weekend for brunch. Beer is always cold, foods always hot, service is pub style and bathrooms are clean. Its my favorite Seattle Irish pub left standing. I think they may be affiliated with Trinity food truck.
google avatar

Jennifer J.

Yelp
Murphy's is just about as classic as an Irish pub can get. There's lots of dark wood, stained glass windows, and (of course) plenty of Guinness on tap. They offer the requisite Irish pub-inspired dishes, like stew and fish & chips, along with a few healthier options to cater to the active Seattle crowd. They have a pretty well hidden beer garden that's lovely on a warm evening. They have lots of great local beers on tap, but I usually grab my fave Irish bar drink: an immortal Black 'n Tan. Their trivia nights (held twice a week) are super fun. I've been a few times now and there's always a large crowd. Service can (understandably) be a little slow when it's busy, so I try to settle up my tab before the trivia rounds are finished.

Yelp
Continues to be a solid local staple for everything from a cold pint to a solid dish of a variety of food. The Irish fare is on point. Their bartenders are knowledgeable and quick with service. Dog friendly, kid friendly during the day. Great brunch... patio and fireplace. Just wish they were open until two but with all the other awesomeness, I'll settle for noon and day drinking. (Other perks: owners. Trivia. Chef, cuz duh, he is awesome!)

Timmy J.

Yelp
Great staff and great food, and kid-friendly. The wait staff were very attentive and friendly. Good selection of beers. We've eaten at Irish pubs in many cities, and the food at Murphy's is the best. I'm not sure if Irish Gourmet" is a term, but it accurately describes this place! I had the Reuben - really good corned beef, the kraut was just the right tang (tasty but didn't overpower the sandwich like at other places), and the marble rye was excellent. Wife had the Paddy Melt (also on the marble rye) and said it was one of the best she's had. Kiddos had the Mac and cheese and chicken strips and scarfed them down. Happy family = great dining experience :-). Our new favorite Irish pub.

Jonathan E.

Yelp
Went here for the first time with two friends. It was super packed due to the combination of trivia and a UW football game. When a table was opening up, I asked one of the servers if it was open sitting. He said yes but another group was waiting and that my group of 3 could take the spots they left at some couches with a tiny coffee table next to the fireplace. This was fine for beers but I was really hoping to order food. Another table became open, so I asked another server if we could be seated there. He responded asking how big my group was and then told me that another larger group would be seated there instead (our group had 3 people and this group had 4). Other tables opened throughout the night and were given to groups who arrived more than an hour after we had. Ended up going to Dick's since we were never given the option of having enough space to eat. All together it was pretty frustrating to have been relegated to a tiny table and couches and then to have been overlooked for more than two hours. Especially since we witnessed firsthand that they utilized this couch seating as a waiting area for the group that had been there before us. I'm sure my rating would have been higher had I been able to eat some of their food.

Yelp
Came in here as it was one of the only spots to get a burger late night on a Monday - so glad we did. Great spot with live Irish music and friendly staff. Food was quick to come out and fantastic. Great spot to stop by in Wallingford - we'll be back
google avatar

Susan W.

Yelp
Finally made it back yesterday & happy to report they've fixed the Reuben and it's now the best I've ever had and I can't wait to go back and have another one. But, the order of fish & chips for $14 only had 2 small pieces of fish. We arrived at 1:55pm on Sunday afternoon looking for a bite & a pint and the Sounders match to watch. Our excellent server Princess Katie put the TV on the right channel for us. She is a rockstar. Fabulous service. Note: On Sunday they serve Brunch til 3pm with limited other lunch food offerings.
google avatar

Rachel G.

Yelp
Went for the full Irish breakfast, was completely satisfied with it. I wish they offered soda bread but the wheat bread was very tasty. The service was great; the atmosphere super friendly. It's clearly a neighborhood pub. Will absolutely eat here again.
google avatar

Julie S.

Yelp
I came on trivia night and it had its pros and cons. The food was actually really delicious. However, we came early to get a good seat, and they made us move because of a larger party that needed seating. They made us move to an area that was extremely crammed. It was also very loud and hard to hear others. The service was also really slow. I'm taking it with a grain of salt because of how busy it was. The trivia was fun and the food was great.
google avatar

Jeff W.

Yelp
The new owners have really transformed this place. Previously, this place was a hole and just not worth a visit but now I'm considering becoming a regular. The servers are excellent, the owner is friendly and even served our table. They are even kid-and-dog-friendly! The servers are extremely sweet to the dogs and feed them treats, with permission from their humans, of course. The menu is relatively basic but that shouldn't be held against them. They have 18 beers on draught and all well priced. Excellent addition to the Wallingford neighborhood. Slainté Murphy's!
google avatar

Ken B.

Yelp
We love coming here with our dogs, sometimes just for the Irish beers, other times we'll have the great poutine and fried chicken dinner too. Not the place if you're in a hurry- the staff are always very kind and helpful, but they can get busy and you probably won't be in and out too quick. We don't mind, both the pub and the nice back patio are great setting for a relaxed evening.
google avatar

Kristy R.

Yelp
Cool pub! Drinks are cheap. Atmosphere is laid back, dark and comfortable. Live music too! What's not to like?! Two thumbs up! Stop in here for sure!
google avatar

Megan R.

Yelp
Murphy's is a great pub all around! We have been going here for a few years and somehow they just keep getting better. They got new ownership a few years back so if you came here a long time ago and didn't love it, I would give them another try. That's what happened to us. With the new ownership the food is so much better! We love their sandwiches, wings, corned beef and meatloaf. They also have lots of entertainment for you to enjoy. From tvs at the bar to watch sports, an outside patio in the back, live music on weekends and trivia during the week. I think the best think about Murphy's is their service. They treat you like family and are just good people. It has really become one of our go to spots weekly. Apparently, it has become a lot of people's go to spot b/c they are always busy! Must mean they are doing something right!
google avatar

Mark S.

Yelp
Exquisite food and lovely people. One scary thing is the cost of their fine Irish whiskeys and an even scarier thing... It is damn well worth it! A fantastic crew that works hard and still has your back. A little bit of Ireland in Wallingford. Serving good food and drink in the time of Covid.., These essential workers are heroes.
google avatar

Tara H.

Yelp
Mainly came here because we had our dog with us and it was one of the dog-friendly restaurants in this area. The service was great. We were able to pick out our own seats and found seats immediately at the bar. The bartender was fine with just having our dog by our legs. For food, we got the Irish Nachos and their Shepherd's Pie. Both were good, but nothing spectacular. I would say the food is better than average, but nothing super special. The food wasn't very expensive though and filled 2 people up with LOTS of leftovers, so that was great! I'd probably come back here to grab a drink and appetizer again.
google avatar

Ty N.

Yelp
STAY AWAY FRIM THIS PLACE, I placed an order and they ensured it would take 15 these guys a damn lieee... 45mins later they got me waiting so I guess they don't trust the phone call and only start the order when you show up and pay for it. Stupid scum

Jonathan Z.

Yelp
I cannot imagine a better neighborhood bar. Good food, the staff is the best, and there's usually something fun going on
google avatar

Lindsey C.

Yelp
Murphy's Pub is really fantastic. Their staff has always been incredibly friendly, including their owners. We used to go at least once a month for trivia, but since Covid hit have been ordering the occasional take out. The food is always great - good sized portions and really tasty while still having the pub food feel. We ordered last night for St. Patrick's Day and between us and our friends got the corned beef and hash, Reuben sandwich, fish and chips, and stout stew. All of which were great. Highly recommend for take out, but definitely for a visit when you're able to to enjoy the food, atmosphere, and drinks in person!
google avatar

Channing C.

Yelp
Really great fish n chips here! Not super greasy and made with real fish. You can get clam strips for extra. I honestly have to say that the coleslaw was the star of the meal for me. Great flavor, creamy, crunchy and all that good stuff. If you come in the evening on a Friday night, like I did, expect a to enter a party atmosphere. The live band plays classic rock tunes and I remember the lead singer sounded very much like Axl Rose. I was a little annoyed because my friend and I were not able to carry out a conversation because the music was so loud, but that was not a deal breaker. It's live music! Great selection of Irish beers along with a full bar. It's a pretty decently sized space. If ever in the mood for a pub, I will think of Murphy's.
google avatar

Kevin C.

Yelp
This place is awesome. What my lunch box with all my vegetables mymy Guinness gravy. Beer here is great. This place is dog friendly. I love the Irish look at the building inside. The Guinness harp up above the bar. It's a little higher price than what I am used to paying but it is very good and worth the money.
google avatar

Kyle J.

Yelp
We will not be back. The owner (wife) was so rude to my husband. He was trying to order take-out. He was yelled at and removed for trying to order without waiting to be seated (for take-out?) but she sicked her doorman on him. He's 70. Was a time you could order take-out in-premise not on an app. Hopefully all gays in our little village who've gone there for years aren't being treated like that.

Alanna K.

Yelp
Megatron is the ultimate bar tender. Thanks for playing Backstreet Boys! You're the best!

Po S.

Yelp
Was looking for a quick brunch before work and stopped by. My server, Ben, was very kind and helpful! He informed me that they weren't serving fish and chips for brunch but directed me to the Irish breakfast, which was amazing. 10/10 service, Ben deserves a raise!

Pam G.

Yelp
Great place for a beer with the gang! The servers are friendly and it's a welcoming atmosphere. On nights we've been there, a small group is playing fiddle and flute music.
google avatar

Chris L.

Yelp
Nice hangout out spot for a burger and beers. Got the salmon burger, which I was pleasantly surprised to find a fillet of salmon rather than just a salmon patty!
google avatar

Shannon S.

Yelp
I was on a pub crawl in the area and had already eaten by the time I arrived here which I wish I had just a tad more room to sample some of the food here as the menu looked enticing. There were friendly folks here and as you might guess some decent pints of beer to be had as well as a bit of Irish Whiskey as well. My only disappointment is they were not showing the Rugby World Cub and didn't even know anyplace that was so I guess not a big rugby culture in the area or just the wrong Irish Bar to ask? Overall a pleasant place with a pleasant crowd with good food and drink on offer so certainly worthy of a visit.
google avatar

Valerie W.

Yelp
Murphy's was simply OK in my book. They have an alright happy hour...but most of the options were fried. No big surprise there as it's a pub. Beers weren't too bad and they had a decent amount of options. The prices were average overall. +1 for their patio. +1 for live music This place can get crowded inside when there's evens going on. Our last order: Cheeseburger: not bad, not great. pretty average but the fries were tasty. French Dip: only so-so. This isn't a normal french dip...it's a hamburger patty on a hoagie with some cheese and onion. I'd pass next time on this one. $2 extra to add a side salad vs. fries. Might be better off ordering some of their Irish fare as their other menu items have been nothing to write home about.
google avatar

Yelp
Fan FUCKING tastic service from Ben this evening. I've worked in customer service, and just the absolute care and attentiveness form him was heartwarming. Such a treat. Even in a global pandemic, the service was exquisite. Needs a fucking raise tbh.
google avatar

Sara T.

Yelp
I go to this place once a week. One of my favorite places to go, the staff is always incredibly nice (and remembers our order which is not necessary but so sweet), the food is always incredible and everything is served so quickly even when it's incredibly busy. Best chicken tenders you could find anywhere -- and i've tried a lot. I know even when I move out of the area i'll be back often.
