London’s Best South Indian Restaurants Serve Kerala and Hyderabadi Food | Eater London

"Idli and dosa are the two main ‘tiffin’ snacks in South India, sold in small casual joints where people drop by on their way to work, often eating quickly while standing up. While dosas have been heartily embraced in the west, idlis have been somewhat slow to catch on outside Indian communities. Part of a 25-year old chain, this small Tamil tiffin joint is unusual, then, as it specialises in idli rather than dosa. The simple, neat café is a newcomer to East Ham, having opened only a few months ago. There’s a relatively short menu of plain idlis that are soft and squishy, and ones wearing a feisty red cloak of podi — ‘powder chutney’ made from dried red chillies, lentils, peanuts, sesame seeds, and spices mixed with ghee. Other items of note are kara paniyaram — mini pancakes that are South India’s answer to Dutch poffertjes — and sweet pongal made from split yellow moong beans, rice, jaggery and cashew nuts, here deeply musky with camphor, cooked Iyengar style in a version that’s served in temples." - Sejal Sukhadwala

This is a branch of Murugan Idli from Chennai. They have been here for 2 years now. The Idli’s are soft and fluffy like the ones you get in India. The rest of the food was ok. Good filter coffee.Service needs to be better but understandable in this situation with hospitality sector and post NYE.

If you are expecting service with a smile then go elsewhere. If you are looking to have delicious dosa then do not come here either. If you are looking to have tasty starters then this is the place. The service is somewhat cold. The dosas are mighty thin, oily and the potatoe masala inside was some sort of instant mash concoction. All starters including the idlis were super tasty, pipping hot and fresh.

The food was delicious, clean, and reasonably priced. I highly recommend giving it a try!

I went with a friend who speaks Tamil and grew up eating the food served here. What I personally liked about the place are cleanliness, small menu (find it often confusing when restaurants have too many foods on their menu), good customer service and good value for money. The food was authentic, also verified by my friend. We went on a Sunday at 2pm so it wasn’t too busy either. We tried lots of different dishes with coffee; and the food + coffee were delicious. I will return soon again with more South Indian friends.

Great South Indian food. They have another chain in Singapore as well (which I have tried previously). Food didn't disappoint me at all Podi ghee idli is a must try. I would rate their dosa's above saravana bhavan's.

The quality of food is the best of all the Indian restaurant on East Ham. They have the best variety of chutneys. The prices have been hiked. They are doing some form of Eat Out to Help Out for September.

Probably the best-tasting South Indian food in London. I am happy to ride the tube 35 mins every other weekend to eat there, despite the poor service (e.g. incorrect orders, cold sambhar). However the people there are super nice and fix everything when you ask with a smile. Will continue to visit! 6-star food, 2-star service for an average of 4 stars overall.

I was not expecting to find a Murugan idli shop in London - and oh boy, it didn’t disappoint. The filter coffee was perfectly frothy, the idlis were like spongy pillows, the dosa was perfectly spiced, and the medu vadas as well as the paniyarams were crispy. Above all, the prices blow the nearest South Indian food chain out of the water. I will definitely be back to devour the rest of the menu.
