23 Best Things to Do in Montreal

"Jewish food historian Kat Romanow knows her bagels, bialys, and rugelachs. She holds a Masters in food studies from Concordia University. She knows the history of every nook, cranny, and back alley in these neighborhoods, and is completely integrated into the community. Her Beyond the Bagel walking food tour, offered through the Museum of Jewish Montreal, is a highly informative, well-organized romp. The Plateau and Mile End might be known today for their posh hipsters and nightlife hotspots, but this tour pulls back the curtain on the layers of history found in this part of the city. It's a much more fulfilling dive into Montreal cuisine than just grabbing a bagel or smoked meat sandwich on your own. As much of the excursion is outdoors, just note that this one is not generally offered between November and March." - Todd Plummer

Beyond the Bagel – Museum of Jewish Montreal – Tour Review | Condé Nast Traveler

"What can we expect from this tour? Jewish food historian Kat Romanow knows her bagels, bialys, and rugelach. Her Beyond the Bagel walking food tour, offered through the Museum of Jewish Montreal, is a highly informative, well-organized romp through the Plateau and Mile End's Jewish culinary history. Groups are kept small, and with 16 stops over three hours, there's a lot of ground to cover. Tell us about your fellow tourees. It's mostly tourists who sign up, but you'll be heartily embraced by the local proprietors and vendors you meet along the way. How's the guide, then? Romanow is an expert on Jewish food culture in Montreal; she holds a Masters in food studies from Concordia University. She knows the history of every nook, cranny, and back alley in these neighborhoods, and is completely integrated into the community. What are some of the highlights on the tour? The tour covers a staggering 16 stops, many of which having tasting elements, from the famous bagels at St-Viateur and Fairmount, as well as Schwartz's smoked-meat sandwich. Come with an appetite. So why would you recommend the Beyond the Bagel tour to a visitor to Montreal? The Plateau and Mile End might be known today for their posh hipsters and nightlife hotspots, but this tour pulls back the curtain on the history found in this part of the city. It's a much more fulfilling dive into Montreal cuisine than just grabbing a bagel or smoked meat sandwich on your own." - Todd Plummer

10 Places That Do Justice to Montreal Bagels | Eater Montreal

"This spot on St. Laurent inside the Museum of Jewish Montreal is open for brunch Friday through Sunday, and thankfully, bagel boards grace the menu. They’re served with salmon, but the twist is that it’s cured with lapchang souchong tea for a smokier take on the classic bagel and lox." - Mallory Frayn

Great way to spend an afternoon exploring the older neighbourhoods of Montreal! Tour leader Nicolas was fantastic and extremely knowledgeable. I highly recommend and will definitely sign up for a different tour next time I am in Montreal. Merci!

Google
We went on the Making Their Mark: Montreal Jewish History Walking. Shannon was a great guide with a wealth of knowledge. The couple who was on the tour with us had personal connections to the history and Shannon was able to make the tour interesting for them as well as us, who had little knowledge of Montreal’s Jewish history. Worthwhile tour.

I have been looking forward to doing this food tour for awhile and the experience did not disappoint. I learned a lot about Jewish culture/history in Montreal while enjoying some incredible food. You did not go away hungry. I would highly recommend this tour.

Google
We had a great history and food walking tour with Samara on Sunday. She was really knowledgeable about the history of the Mile End and the Jewish families who built these businesses. She also had lived experience in the area that she referenced as we visited each location. We saw a number of classic places - the St Viateur and Fairmount bagel shops of course - but also some we wouldn’t have noticed, like a 1930s era corner store diner that feels like a time machine to that era. Also a bakery that was out of this world good. We stopped at various points in the Mile End to just get some history of the people who lived here. For instance learning about the development of grocery stores and backyard food production. It’s clear the museum and staff like Samara put a lot of effort into these tours, and we appreciated the care she put into this one! Tips: wear walking shoes, as you will walk almost the whole time, and bring an umbrella or jacket in case it rains.

Google
I went in two walking tours with the museum: rabbis, writers and radicals and making their mark. I thoroughly enjoyed both, a great window into understanding montral jewish history and seeing the layers of history. As someone who appreciates jewish history and community, I found both tours to be a treat. And look forward to more tours with the museum on future trips.

Rachel was the most amazing tour guide - her lively, animated commentary made the 3.5 hours whizz by. We loved all of the food and particularly learning more about the families behind the stores and her personal anecdotes. Would highly recommend to anyone interested in learning more about Jewish culture and food in Montreal. Thank you Rachel!

Google
Beautiful space, incredible interior architecture. I really enjoyed the information on Maxwell M. Kalman, not the architect of this particular building but someone who's had a major impact on architecture in Canada.

Yelp
This physical brick and mortar museum centrally located on The Main at Duluth serves as a hub from whence a multitude of experiences have their provenance. Walking tours serve to enable the public to more vividly and viscerally interact with the past history of and the present-day life in Jewish Montréal. These walking tours showcase different aspects of life in the Jewish community. There is the Beyond the Bagel walking tour which focuses on the historical culinary traditions and institutions that have shaped the tastes (as well as whetted the appetites) of Montréal denizens. There is the fascinating architectural walking tour wherein we explore the many landmark buildings which served the Jewish community. This is a very special museum ... and a great concept! #Urbex has come to the museum scene in the city folks and I enthusiastically implore you all to come check it out. There is also a lovely café attached to the museum where you can have a knish or three and maybe some borsht. You must try the most sublime and decadent ice cream sandwich you've ever dreamed of ... rosewater custard ice cream sandwiched betwixt two cardamom spiced cookies ... what?!? Have you ever heard of such a thing. They've got very very good and exactingly measured drip coffee for your Java jones-ing pleasure. There are cool totebags and postcards as well as many books and buttons to peruse. The Museum of Jewish Montréal adds an historical and complex dimension to the intricately woven multicultural mosaic that is our beautifully vibrant city. The museum is dedicated to preserving and sharing the history and profound influence that Hebraic culture has had in the shaping of Montréal. Maps play an essential role here; even more essential is the role of the observer, whilst one studies and explores the cultural topography afoot, one must also observe the history that is hidden beyond the ornate façades and stained glass. Jewish Montréal is ubiquitous because Jewish Montréal is Montréal. From our love of food to our history, from the central (Main) artery of our city radiating outwards until island meets river, we see how Montréal has been beautified and made more radient by our Jewish community.

Yelp
Our "Beyond the Bagel" Jewish food walking tour was a fun and fascinating way to learn about the Jewish community in Montreal. Our guide Colin was (as billed) a culinary and historian superstar, and he was patient and thorough answering our many questions. Every moment was informative and delicious! The history of Jewish Montreal is rich and colorful and well-told through the medium of food; our favorites were the cheese crowns from Boulangerie Cheskie and, of course, the grand-finale smoked meat sandwich from Schwartz's. We also enjoyed the art exhibit and gift shop at the pop-up location where we ended our tour. Highly recommend, and thank you!

Yelp
There is something the glowing reviews posted don't tell you, this isn't really a museum . The people who work here are super nice and I bet the walking tours are good but they are only offered when the weather is warmer. In short the museum itself is not a real attraction.

Yelp
We loved the tour, walking and stories about the Jewish life in Montreal, mainly after WWII. Don't miss it!

Yelp
I'd call this more of an exhibition than a museum, but I'd like to note that the staff was extremely helpful! The walking tours sound great (unfortunately we did not have enough time to go on them), but the staff answered all of our questions and even directed us to explore Jewish sites on our own time. I would absolutely be willing to donate to this museum in order to secure a larger space - the exhibition was great.

Yelp
Rabbis, Writers, and Radicals walking tour of Mile End lead by our tour guide Sophia was a great way to learn about the history of one of our favorite Montreal neighborhoods. Our guide had a wealth of historical information to share about the "downtowners" who settled into Mile End. We stopped at different locations in the neighborhood where the buildings were used as a jumping off point to delve into the stories of different institutions. This is less of an architectural tour of buildings as it is an exploration of the variety of institutions and the communities that built them. Sophia used historical photos and a wealth of research notes to bring the stories to life and capture a vivid sense of the difficult lives of these poor immigrant Jews and their rich cultural history.

Yelp
My husband and I took the " Making Their Mark" tour and we really enjoyed it. Our guide was very knowledgeable about the Jewish history of the area and she made the tour fun and interesting!
