18 Places To See Uncanny Specimens of Wax Anatomy

"The Anatomical and Obstetrics Collection at the Museo di Palazzo Poggi in Bologna contains some of the world’s rarest and most beautiful 18th century anatomical waxworks, including work by masters of the craft such as Clemete Suisini, Ercole Lelli, Giovanni Manzolini and his wife and fellow anatomist, Anna Morandi. Artist and sculptor Ercole Lelli was considered one of the finest anatomical artists of the late 18th century. His ecorches, or “flayed men,” used real skeletons covered in artistic wax representations of flesh. Trained by Lelli, anatomist and professor Giovanni Manzolini later taught his wife Anna the art of life-like wax sculpting. After his death, she became a professor of anatomy in her own right and lectured in his place. An incredible wax self-portrait created by Anna is in the collection, along with many other educational models created by the couple. Clemente Susini’s “Venerina” wax Anatomical Venus is considered to be one of his finest. The torso of reclining figure of a beautiful nude woman contains removable organs, allowing anatomists of the day to understand the inner workings of the human body. Susini’s models, painstaking to produce and incredibly fragile, can be seen in only a few other locations throughout the world, including the Semmelweis Medical Museum in Budapest, La Specola Museum in Florence, the Josephinum in Vienna, and the Wax Anatomy Museum ot University of Cagliari." - ATLAS_OBSCURA

Museo di Palazzo Poggi is one of Bologna’s most fascinating and unexpected museums. Tucked inside a former university palace, it’s a beautifully curated mix of science, art, anatomy, and exploration. One minute you're looking at Renaissance maps and navigation tools, the next you're in a room full of anatomical wax models or early obstetric training figures—equal parts eerie and amazing. The space itself is elegant, with frescoed ceilings and grand halls that make the displays feel even more surreal. It’s the kind of place where curiosity leads the way, and every room holds something surprising. A must for anyone who loves history with a twist of the weird and wonderful.

Absolutely brilliant quirky museum. Features anatomical models of the human body, skeletons and muscle models, variety of biological aid etc. I personally loved all the botanical prints and etching and my partner variety of large size historical ship models and world maps from the 1600s and 1700s.

An incredible discovery. The best museum I have seen by now in Bologna. The museum has a lot of different discoveries from XVII, some already seen elsewhere, some totaly new to my eyes.

As a museum lover, singlehandedly the best museum I’ve ever visited! Something for everyone and such unique exhibits. The museum and university’s history could be felt in the air; these exhibits aren’t curated for sales, they’re discoveries of scientists from the past. The library looks and even smells exactly like the old-timey ones from the movies. And love how affordable the tickets are!

This is an awesome place to visit, there are several amazing museums you can visit, I really enjoyed seeing all of them. They are all very educational, informative and interesting. The collections are very well preserved and displayed. It’s fairly big with lots to see and do, I really enjoyed my time here and I would definitely recommend visiting some of these lovely museums if you have the time.

Truly fascinating and especially educating if you have kids. A must stop very close to the opera. All sections were truly interesting with that of anthropology a bit more. Ticket price 5€, worths every cent. Don't miss it.

Simply extraordinary, one of the best museums I have ever visited. Every exposition is beautifully displayed and explained by short but detailed descriptions and the different halls (natural science, human anatomy and naval history) are all great. My personal favorite was the human Anatomy exposition, composed by an extremely rich collection of 1700s anatomical wax models, truly wonderful to look at. Expecially for the cheap price it is a must-visit in Bologna.
