"Off the beaten path from the so-called Golden Triangle comprised of the Thyssen, El Prado, and the Reina Sofia, this private collection is well worth the side trip. Beyond the individual pieces, which include decorative art over the centuries along with several works by Goya, Lucas Cranach, Velázquez, and the like, it's the way this collection, amassed by banker, publisher, and collector José Lázaro Galdiano himself, is displayed in his former mansion. While it's not a house museum per se, the collections are grouped in a way that has the feel of an old stately mansion mixed with a cabinet of curiosities. Galdiano is well loved in Spain for having bought back many important Spanish artworks that were almost lost during the Spanish Civil War."

THE MUSEO LAZARO GALDIANO IS AMONG Madrid’s most overlooked art museums, seldom visited by the crowds that converge on the city’s more famous galleries, such as the Prado and the Reina Sofia. But what this small museum lacks for in size it makes up for in the sheer quantity and quality of its collection. Built in 1903 to house the enormous collection of the eccentric banker and art collector Lazaro Galdiano, this ornate mansion-turned-museum has been open to the public since 1962. Among its exhibits you will find some stunning artistic and historic treasures, such as sprawling medieval manuscripts, baroque Renaissance paintings, an armory featuring suits of armor and some rather deadly looking weapons, and numerous ancient Greco-Roman sculptures and ceramics. The highlight of a visit to this museum, however, is to see the wonderful Gothic masterpieces that Galdiano collected throughout his life. Here you can find many of El Greco’s melancholic paintings, the bizarre and esoteric works of Hieronymus Bosch, and perhaps most interesting of all, the disturbing art of Francisco Goya. The museum’s collection of artwork by Goya is particularly noteworthy as it contains some of his “Witches Sabbath” oil paintings and the entire “Disparates” print series, which features haunting black-and-white sketches portraying visions as if from a datura-fueled waking nightmare. Free from 3-4:30 Tuesday through Sunday, 2-3 on Sundays.

Nice museum with a large collection of paintings and other art works. The building itself is worth a visit. It is well organised thematically and with some must seen paintings, in particular Goya’s. The museum is easily reachable with public transport and is located is one of the most selective neighbourhoods of Madrid.

I have visited the Museo Lázaro Galdiano twice, and it continues to impress me each time. The museum offers an excellent price-to-value experience, given the extraordinary range of works on display. The beautifully designed rooms and the architecture of the building alone are worth a visit. It is truly remarkable what José Lázaro Galdiano achieved in his lifetime and the exceptional collection he assembled. If you are in Madrid, it is without doubt a must-see.

Google
Incredible museum with the collection of José Lázaro Galdiano. It is a varied and amazing collection from Goya's to swords, Bosch's to stunning ceilings, medieval art to an El Greco that took our breath away. We spent 2 hours here and could have stayed half a day. There are lockers before ticket booth but they seemed not so secure to us.

Everyone fusses about the big three museos in Madrid but this is the Mueso to visit. Like the Frick in NYC, the Lazaro is in a mansion owned by Lazaro which now houses vast collection of gothic,Gothic, baroque masters, treasures, furniture, armor and one of the oldest elevators in Madrid. The current special exhibition is from Dora Maar. Surrounded by a gorgeous garden. Quiet and heavenly this is a must visit when in Madrid. Outstanding.

Well put together Museum with beautiful collection of art and objects. The palace is a piece of art by itself. There you will find dem medals, pottery from more then 2500 years ago to beautiful paintings from the XX century. Note that the museum offers more then a visit but its agenda offers music, dance and poetry in the evenings.

The free visit time here is from 14:00 to 15:00 in the afternoon from Tuesday to Sunday. No reservation is required, just enter directly. The staff is relatively friendly. The four-story exhibition hall needs to be experienced slowly, and it can be completed in an hour. The ceiling and armor weapons inside are wonderful.

Yelp
If you've been to Madrid a few times already you may be interested in checking out this lesser known museum. While it may not have the abundance of show stopping masterpieces of the Prado, Reina Sofia or Thyssen, it like the latter is a former private collection which is fascinating of itself as you marvel at how one person chose/accumulated all these works. Unlike the Thyssen, there is a lot here besides paintings, including textiles, pottery, ceramics, bronzes, silverware... The information about Galdiano's life is also impressive - how did he find time to buy ALL that art as well as founding a publishing house, being a banker, journalist etc etc. I popped in for about two hours on a Friday from around 1.15pm and the museum was basically deserted so it was very cool to have the place to myself (plus the docents awkwardly checking that I wasn't breaking or stealing anything). Admission is only 6 euros so do check it out and then walk back down high fashion the Calle de Serrano afterwards!

Yelp
Jose Lazaro Galdiano was a publishing millionaire who left his private art collection to the Spanish state in 1942. His palatial home has been converted into a wonderful museum. Many of the rooms have richly decorated ceilings. The collection is vast but the museum retains a small intimate atmosphere. There are collections of jewelery, armour, items from ancient Greece and Rome, porcelain, coins, furniture, textiles and, of course, wonderful paintings. Goya, el Greco, Bosch and Constable amongst them. Most of the rooms also had handy information sheets in various languages, including English. Well worth a visit!

Yelp
Small private museum in the middle of Madrid, with an incredible art collection: Pictures by Constable, Cranach, Zuñiga, Goya, El Greco, Murillo, Madrazo, Zurbarán, Velázquez, El Bosco... It also accounts with armours, weapons, sculptures, yewels, furnitures, tapestries... Incredible and mostly unknown! After visiting it one can also have lunch in one of the many good restaurants around it.

Yelp
There are so many museums in Madrid that choosing where to go can be daunting but this hidden gem should be added to everyone's list. Even after visiting all the large, famous museums this remains my favorite. The collection is amazing and the intimate, quiet, almost reverent feel of the place adds so much to the experience.
