The 27 Best Things to Do in Mexico City

"The Tamayo Museum (Museo Tamayo) was founded by Ruffino Tamayo in 1981, when the Mexican artist donated his own works, in addition to a massive collection of international contemporary art, with the goal of showcasing 20th-century art for the public. The building, designed by Mexican architects Teodoro González de León and Abraham Zabludovsky, is made of reinforced concrete and white marble stone. You would assume such heavy materials would feel like an intrusion in the middle of Chapultepec Park, where the museum is located. But the low-slung design and natural tones allow the building to hide in and among the trees. Inside, glass walls and light wood floors make the gallery spaces feel contemporary, open, and spacious." - Scarlett Lindeman

"While the arrival of the Museo Jumex certainly brings some stiff competition in the contemporary art arena, the Museo Tamayo, open since the 80's, housing muralist Rufino Tamayo's entire collection, has still got it. They've brought everyone from Sophie Calle, to Wolfgang Tillmans, to Francis Alÿs, to Yayoi Kusama—whose exhibition last year broke attendance records—to the Mexican audience, complementing each show with film series, talks, educational programs, and their famous jazz nights. Originally designed by two of Mexico's most prominent modernist architects, Abraham Zabludovsky and Teodoro González de León, the museum, which is nestled in Chapultepec park, has recently undergone an expansion and refurb. Meanwhile, the newly appointed curator, Juan Gaitan, will undoubtedly continue to shake things up in the years to come."

"During or after a walk in Bosque de Chapultepec (Chapultepec Park), head to Museo Tamayo. Though Mexico City is known for having the most museums in the world, Tamayo specifically is zen-like in its captivation." —MGA

This museum is so enjoyable. It's small, and the art is contemporary and somewhat political. We loved it. And there was a little concert going on in the foyer as we left that had drawn quite a crowd! No cafe, but there's a cute little coffee and snack spot in the park across the road from the parking lot.

Google
Innovative contemporary art museum. Unfortunately, many of the galleries were closed during our visit and only 2 special exhibits were available

Google
One of my favorite museums in Mexico City, great place to hang around and enjoy good art. The expos are temporary.

Very nice expositions and everyone is really friendly, nice little cafe on the back, pretty cool and chill date. Note: They have a free storage for your backpack or whatever you need to leave at the door to enjoy your experience

The art was beautiful and exhibits were thoughtfully placed. It was the museum staff that ruined the experience for me. One lady followed on my heels throughout one of the rooms. Another told me I was too close to an art piece (despite being the distance I was instructed to stand by staff in the previous room)—when I stepped back and asked if my distance was okay, she did not respond. Instead she walked to a spot 2 feet behind me and with an attitude told me where she was standing was the appropriate distance. I will not be visiting again and would not recommend to others. Maybe check out El Museo de Arte Moderno across the street.

Honestly I was delighted by this museum! The installation downstairs made me think and laugh. Also all of the employees we encountered that we asked questions of had so much information about the art!

Google
Five star architecture, two star exhibits. It’s so close to the other two large museums in this part of the park that it would be almost rude not to visit. The building truly is a marvel, and the star of the show. The art itself, a bit meh. It’s all subjective, of course, but expect to spend no more than 45 mins here, unless you’re a 100% fan of often absurdly abstract modern art.

Google
They have great exposition and the building is modern and well taken care of. However, they were more than one expo that was closed and the museum is not too big, so it is noticeable.

Yelp
While walking around the Chapultepec Park, we stumbled across this museum and wanted to check it out after seeing the building itself. The interior is super cool and the rainbow glass windows they have make a great impact on the space itself! We didn't resonate with the exhibitions themselves but enjoyed the short walk around.

Yelp
I want to start this review by saying I'd like to visit this museum again in the future, but our visit a few weeks ago wasn't the best. They were honest when we walked in that some of the exhibition areas were closed, but we were only able to see two temporary exhibits - all of the permanent collection areas were closed. (There were even signs in the park advertising for a Tamayo exhibit at the museum through April, but nope.) So I know the museum has an amazing permanent collection - Picasso, Miro, Bacon, Calder, Dali, Ernst, Barbara Hepworth, de Kooning, Magritte, O'Keeffee, Rothko... but we didn't get to see any of them. We also didn't see a single work by Rufino Tamayo, the artist/founder of the museum - and I read that the museum has a collection of his work. Unless you're particularly interested in one of the temporary exhibits, I would avoid visiting this museum for a while in case a lot of the museum is still closed.

Yelp
I've been coming here for so long that I thought I had already written a review. I first visited here when many of Rufino Tamayo's works still lined the walls. (Unfortunately, on this visit, I could find only one.) It's often a bold museum in its choices. I remember seeing an exhibition years ago titled 'Cuerpos Pintados' where most of the galleries were given over to larger than life photos of nude bodies painted in wild colors. It was an incredibly joyful experience combined with music and video. The museum was packed with visitors of all ages -- even children. (That's not something you'd see in the more prudish United States.) This visit was interesting because of a recently opened exhibition featuring the sculptor Isamu Noguchi's works for playgrounds. Known primarily for his abstract sculpture, he is far less known today for his playgrounds and other outdoor works. It's another reason I love this museum: it often presents art that is esoteric but no less important. Seeing Noguchi's models on display allows greater insight into his oeuvre. The museum even had some of his equipment recreated and it's outside right now. I was ready to take a ride on his swing set but the skies darkened and a rainstorm ensued. One of the big reasons I enjoy this museum so much is the building itself. It's a large squat Brutalist concrete structure that is filled with natural light inside. Each gallery flows into the next by a few steps or long ramps. It's a great venue for art. I just wish more Tamayo canvases were on display. He's one of my favorites that deftly employed a limited color palette to great effect.

Yelp
We were at the museum at lunchtime and saw the restaurant and decided to stop to eat, and really were happy with the decision. The food is delicious, the staff is just the right amount of attentive and are knowledgeable about what they serve, and the location is great, especially on the patio. (The interior of the restaurant is really cool too.) Kudos to the chef who wandered by during the meal to check on everything, service and the food, and who answered our questions about the recipes and techniques used, making a very good meal into something extra special. Highly recommended!

Yelp
Don't both visiting this museum between March and June 30th. They close down almost all of the museum for a holiday. For the same amount of money you could visit the Museo de Arte Moderno and see two floors of art instead of just two rooms.

Yelp
An ok museum. Nice to catch with the others up near the castle but not a must see. I have to say the restaurant (beautifully decorated with an urban feel) was a highlight. After a long day of museum hopping it was very nice for lunch.

Yelp
This museum was a mess when we were here. Poorly curated with mediocre art. The museum itself is not worth the visit but the adjoining cafe is an excellent lunching spot if visiting the other museums in the area. AND DO NOT GO TO ANY MUSEUM IN MX CITY THAT'S FREE ON A SUNDAY! They are jam packed with families and kids with lines forever!

Yelp
Amazing place! I was there last year for the Kusama exhibit, great experience. Totally recommended. I want to try to visit it this year since I will be in Mexico City in a few days.

Yelp
The interior of this building is just marvelous. I didn't really care for the exhibitions inside. Free for students.
