Museum & 500-year-old monastery, with a crypt known for its elaborately arranged skulls & bones.
"Set beneath the 17th-century church of Santa Maria della Concezione dei Cappuccini, this is a series of six small chapels decorated with the skulls, pelvises, and bones of around 4,000 monks, some mummified in their original habitat. While it's not as morbid as that sounds, this is an activity better for older children—very young ones could get a little frightened coming face-to-face with so many bones. The excellent gelateria Come il Latte—a 10-minute walk away—should provide ample distraction afterwards though." - Maresa Manara
"This crypt filled with the mummified remains and skeletons of friars of the Capuchin order is one of Rome's quirkier, more sombering sites. Located just off the glitzy Via Veneto underneath the Church of Santa Maria della Concezione, it contains a series of chambers adorned by the skulls and bones of 4,000 friars arranged in intricate patterns and chandeliers. Though open to children, it's strongly advised to think twice before bringing in anyone who is easily spooked." - Laura Itzkowitz
