MOCA Miami has redefined art to be mere self-expression, with its curators valuing art only if it communicates stories of oppression, inter-generational trauma, or identity. Art is universal; it is not simple partisanship or identity politics.
The current installation of Andrea Chung's work, "Pride and Prejudice," consists of cyanotypes of extremely poor quality. In addition, several prints are warping severely from humidity changes; on one print made with sugar, the sugar has fallen to the bottom of the frame.
The Museum describes Chung's work as "layered," but it is just a facile indictment of tourism, which generates wealth that allows its people to solve important problems.
This is a shame because the Museum could be a gem with a different curatorial staff.
