What’s the Point of Store-Bought Overnight Oats? - Eater

"Mush, if you are unaware, is oats that have been 'soaked in plant based milk blended with real food' (per its packaging) and marketed as overnight oats." - Rebecca Flint Marx

It’s unfortunate that I have to give it such a low rating. Like many others, I was very excited to try this place, something different for vegans! The guy at the counter was helping in suggesting things. I chose the Banhi one, and my buddy chose the “shrimp” Po boy. I thought the presentation was decent , we got the meal, so I chose fries and he got the greens. I think all the sandwiches need to come on the hogie roll, because it’s impractical to eat this mushrooms on that bun, half the contents kept falling out. As far as flavor, fries didn’t seems fresh, but the seasoning they put on them is A lot! Would have been nice if some sort of sauce was offered, we only received ketchup. Not sure exactly if that’s a good thing or not. And the mushroom on my sandwich was definitely not fresh, it seems Re-Fried. It was hard and not juicy. I know what fresh fried oyster mushrooms tasty like… these were not it. My friend sandwich seemed to have the fresh mushrooms. The green things are cooked in this interesting sauce… it was ok. Nothing amazing. I’m willing to try it again, but I think I’ll go with a bowl. Ooh, it’s located in a quaint food hall, so there’s plenty of seating.

Recently, I celebrated my birthday at Mush with my family, and it exceeded all expectations. Here's why: 1. Flavorful Mastery: Mush's dishes were an explosion of flavors - each one a masterpiece. 2. Texture Perfection: The attention to textures was impressive, from crispiness to tenderness; everything was just right. 3. Affordable Excellence: Remarkably, the quality of food came at a reasonable price, making it a great value. 4. Attentive Service: The staff was friendly and helpful, adding to the overall experience. 5. Universal Appeal: Even my non-vegan family members enjoyed it, demonstrating Mush's broad appeal. In conclusion, Mush delivered a great experience that's hard to beat. It's the ideal choice as a vegan or any time you crave exceptional flavors, textures, and great value. Highly recommended!

If you are looking for a vegan/vegetarian food spot then Mush is a place to try! The mushroom chicken sandwich was fantastic (wife's favorite)❤️ The fries 🍟 were perfect (asked for extra crispy). Also enjoyed the chickpea sweet potato curry & the Peruvian Bowl.

Google
Everything was amazing! The po boy was spectacular and that bahn mi burger was simply incredible. Every sauce and seasoning, even on the fries and it’s aioli selection, is perfectly thought out. Amazing flavor and great service. If you love oyster mushrooms, this is a must. And if you don’t, this will change your mind. Can’t wait to go back and try more of the menu. Thanks for everything!

Google
Everything was so delicious! i forgot to take a before picture but I got right into it. The food is beautiful in presentation. Great customer service. Meals are made to order, fresh. We had the Caribbean bowl, mushroom tenders, fries, and my brother ordered a sub(not sure which one) but he devoured it. I’ll definitely back. Its great to find vegetarian/vegan restaurants that does not add soy or fake meat to the menu! I’ll be back to take more pictures.

Google
I was so excited to see Mush has a stand at Nats Park. It was delicious. The gentleman working there were really kind. So fantastic to have high quality vegan options at the park. I can't wait to try the full restaurant options.

I try to come here every weekend or every other weekend! The food is amazing, fresh and made with love. I always get the Caribbean Bowl, I replace the corn with extra arugula, and my heart melts each time. The jerk mushrooms does it for me ever. Single. Time. I love It here!

Google
Great food and vegan! We tried the jerk bbq sandwich, the flavor and texture were spot on. I could have used more salt in my fries but everything was fresh, tasted great and otherwise well seasoned!

Yelp
I've ordered here a few times and the service is always great! This is definitely a place for a vegan cheat day, but the flavors are always there. I prefer their barbecue sandwich over the po'boy but you really can't go wrong w anything on the menu! The reason I wouldn't give five stars is because their mushrooms can have a lot of oil on them and have a lot of excess. My po'boy had a lot of that and not enough meaty mushrooms.

Yelp
I still love this place, however, the service can be hit or miss. Sometimes staff can be unfriendly, they may not even tell you your food is ready or tell you your number. You never know what's happening behind the scenes but customer service is important. There is one gentleman that is super kind and gracious, but I have not seen him the last few times I've visited :( The food is consistently great otherwise.

Yelp
Don't get scared by the prices. Vegan food is not cheap, especially if it's fresh ingredients, and when I tell you this is fresh? He seasoned, breaded, and fried the mushrooms in front of us. That's fresh!! Portions are large; 3 of us shared 1 side of fries, and with the sandwich size, it was enough. No beverages; you would need to buy at the booth next to Mush; it's like a bar or at the convenience store. This is located Inside the miXt Food Hall. Drive pass it on Rhode Island ave (Rt 1) make a right into 39th St, and you will see the free parking garage entrance to your right.

Yelp
Food was great! Service was top notch and it is a quiet ambiance during lunch time. I am sure this place gets pretty lively after 3pm because it is located in between neighborhoods on Rhode Island avenue. Oh, and they take cards only. No cash.

Yelp
yummy! a delicious place to get vegan food for the soul in DC. I got a brunch plate and the chef/employee even offered to let me try the chickpea grits on the house which was so sweet. I had the oyster mushroom and french toast w/breakfast potatoes. The place is nestled in a food hall with other restaurants and merchants. I definitely loved that me and my friends could sit at the bar and enjoy our different foods as most of my friends aren't vegan or plant based. It's super chill and inviting. Love 10/10!

Yelp
Mush Sandwich is worth the visit to MixT food hall. Garage parking is a bit sketchy and the service was slow. I went on a Sunday before 1:00 pm and they were out of most of their sandwiches. I honestly cannot remember the name of my sandwich but it was good. I also enjoyed the potatoes on the brunch menu. I am going to pay them another visit in the future... hopefully, they will have more sandwich options. S/n ~ The smoothie was purchased at the market across from Mush.

Yelp
Mush is located in the Mixt food hall with other food vendors. It is a truly unique vegan spot where thte use mushrooms as their base. The mushrooms were seasoned very well and my sandwich was delicious and the brioche bun makes it a very solid and stable sandwich. I definitely want to come back to this spot and try other items on their menu.

Yelp
I would place a zero star but it does not exist. The challenge was it was tasteless, and very, very greasy sandwich. Avoid it if you visit the establishment. Shocking, considering it's advertising vegan dishes. Greasy

Yelp
Finally...after wanting to visit Mush the past 3 weeks I was able to try their food today. The food did not disappoint and my craving for a zesty and crunchy sandwich was answered. As always I ordered multiple sandwiches and sides. The Banh Mi was really enjoyable. It was my favorite as the ginger/cabbage slaw delivered extra flavor, while making the sandwich complete in composition (fried w/ a hint of freshness). The other two sandwiches were the Jerk (which was more like BBQ than Jerk), and the Izzit Chick'n was pretty much a repeat of the Izzit Tenders served on a bun with toppings and dressings. The mushrooms on all sandwiches and the Izzit Tenders were heavily coated, which lends to the crunchiness I was looking for. However, because the coating is so thick, you compromise the actual integrity (texture/taste) of the mushrooms. My daughter wasn't as big of a fan as I was because she said she missed the actual taste & structure of the mushrooms. I ordered the mush & cheese for her to try, which is a grilled sandwich but unfortunately it was left out of the bag. For sides I ordered the fries; Rice & Jerk Black Beans; Greens; and Chickpea & Sweet Potato Curry Stew. The fries are fresh cut and when they come out the fryer and hot and crispy. They were well seasoned but unfortunately by the time I got back to the car to open the container so they wouldn't be soggy, it was already too late. My advice, open and eat before you even leave the building. The greens were lovely with a hint of coconut milk, curry and peppers (just a bit of heat). I enjoyed the Rice & Jerk Black beans as well as they were will seasoned with a tad of heat. Something was clearly off with the chickpea & sweet potato stew bc it lacked seasoning so I believe it was human error. It's impossible to believe the other food is well seasoned and the stew lacked complete seasoning intentionally. So I'll give a break on that dish. Overall, I really enjoyed the food and will definitely be back.

Yelp
Finally my way out to Brentwood's Mix It Food Hall to try Mush. Mush's food is undeniably seasoned well and satisfied my craving for fried chicken but through the magic of crispy fried mushrooms. The brioche-type roll was a worthy vessel for it all - soft yet sturdy (I had the banh mi); the fresh slaw helped balance the rich, plentiful sauce; there were also ginger chunks. The chef was helpful in the decision making of what to get and the open bar concept made it easy to linger. Overall, I'd come back to try more offerings from this solid vegan spot.

Yelp
I went to this place after looking at the pictures that were posted for some reason my eyes were seeing chicken but it was mushrooms, the only two reasons I didn't give it 5 is the fries could be better they r okay and I was craving chicken. The Friendly staff and I really liked the fact that this place has garage parking that's really cool. I recommend you try it with the jerk sauce. The food court was really nice also . It's definitely worth a check out for vegans and non vegans .

Yelp
Mush is a hidden gem! The good was delish! I went with my friend, that's vegan. It was absolutely no accident that I ate mushrooms for the 1st time! Go Get You Some!

Yelp
I was in the area and decided to check out this spot for lunch. I wanted to keep it simple so I ordered the izzit tenders and green things/ collards. They offer a few bar seats and tables to sit in and dine. It was a nice day so I sat outside. The izzit tenders were good with the BBQ sauce. Not sure if I enjoyed them as much without the sauce. The greens were tasty, different than traditional greens so I like that. I'd be interested to try other items on the menu if I'm in the area.

Yelp
Currently switching over to Vegan and I may have found one of my go to spots! I got the mush and cheese with seasoned fries and it was 10 outta 10 good will definitely be coming back to try more!

JD D.

Yelp
Amazing the mushroom tenders were better than chicken tenders. You definitely get the bang for your buck!

Yelp
OMG!!! AMAZING! The food was soooo good. I had the chick'n sandwich - fired oyster mushrooms! I only noticed one person taking orders and cooking but the wait wasn't long; just the time to cook the food. The restaurant was inside of a an open market place. Street parking doesn't exist so I doubled parked in the building guest parking. I recommend eating everything hot. I wish they had a wrap on the menu See you again soon.

Yelp
I was looking for something new and different to try for dinner and Mush popped up as a recommendation. Mush is located in Mixt food hall in the Brentwood neighborhood. I was able to grab a spot in the underground parking garage. This is my first time being in Mixt. It's such a cool open space and I wasn't aware that it's also an art gallery. I was pretty tired since I was stopping by after work but I will definitely come back to explore the space. I had placed an order online and it was ready when I got there. I ordered the Banh Mi Izzit sandwich which was piled high with fried oyster mushrooms, herbs, cabbage slaw and sesame sriracha aioli on a toasted brioche roll. This sandwich is incredible! The oyster mushrooms were fried to perfection and the slaw and sesame sriracha aioli compliments it perfectly. I also had the seasoned fries, braised collard greens and chlorophyll lemonade. The seasoned fries were not my faves since I don't care for shoe string french fries but those greens though!! Omg! The greens are seasoned with a kick and braised in coconut milk. I could eat them for a meal! Such a delicious meal and the chlorophyll lemonade was not too sweet and refreshing. I have to come back and try some of Mush's other offerings and of course get the greens!

Yelp
Food is super yum. I'm trying to get my husband to enjoy vegan food and so far we have eaten here twice. The price is reasonable and they young men there are very friendly. I love that there's plenty of seats and the parking is accessible. Great location as well. We will definitely be back.

Yelp
As a plant based individual it's really hard to find top quality vegan food that doesn't have soy or other meat substitutes as the main ingredient. So I was very happy to come across Mush on Instagram and was even more excited to try their brunch options on this Sunday. Upon arrival, we stood behind a group of women who appeared to be in the business of promoting the restaurant as they began taking pictures as they ordered food and gazed the menu. They continued this behavior for 3-5minutes when I politely asked if they were ordering because I was ready to order. They let me go ahead of them when I ordered my breakfast platter, paid and went to browse the other store and restaurant options (bought some seamoss from the corner store in the mixfoodhall 10/10 experience). As someone who fries my own oyster mushrooms, make my own French toast and home fries, I expected a 10-15 minute wait time from ordering. Ordered at 2:26pm and the food wasn't ready until after 3:05pm. However, the group of ladies who ordered after me food was bagged and given to them just before my order was completed. The owners stated they prioritized the group of ladies' order because they "paid them for promo." As a paying customer who's actually plant based, I was quite offended and my anxiety was shot through the roof. Is it wise to prioritize people you are paying to be there over a paying customer who could potentially return and recommend the option to vegan friends if they have a positive experience? The girls probably weren't even plant based truly, would leave there and go get some salmon, grits and lamb chops from a real brunch spot. Long story short, I won't be returning. The food was good but wasn't worth the wait. The scramble was ok, didn't resemble eggs at all and tasted like mashed beans with turmeric. The oyster mushrooms were good but fried so long the only "meat" was in the stems. Most of the home fries were burnt. French toast was tasty but again not worth the wait. Mush had the least appealing ambiance in the food hall and that's including the workers. They looked like they just rolled out of bed and into work. I'm black and try to support black owned businesses, but this won't be one of them moving forward. As you can see from my pictures $23 for a half eaten plate. You do the math.

Yelp
I went to Mush.DC today at the Mixit Food Hall on Rhode Island Avenue and it did not disappoint! OMG I had the best oyster chicken sandwich called Banh Mi Izzit it had oyster mushrooms, fresh herbs, cabbage slaw, sesame sriracha aioli and homemade pickles. It was outstanding. It was a bun packed and could easily feed two people. I also had the spiced French fries and they were so yummy! I have a lot to come back for to try too. See you soon. I could eat here everyday.

Nga N.

Yelp
This was the best food I ever had in my life. The shrimp po boy and greens were very satisfying. 10/10
google avatar

Kyle D.

Yelp
The food was great and the portions were super generous. There was an art show going at the same time so after the meal it added a little extra thing to do.

Kendra H.

Yelp
listen! this is my favorite plant based spot in DC. MUSH is the reason why I eat and love mushrooms!!! Not only is food quality great and the portion sizes are nice, the customer service is top notch. I highly recommend the Izzit Jerk BBQ sandwich, the Caribbean mushroom bowl, and the creamy collards. Lastly, I love how they have gluten free options and they sell really great chlorophyll lemonades.

Tierra J.

Yelp
Service was terrible, only 2 people working there & they were standing around chilling & talking then when they began receiving back to back orders they began to rush. My food was overcooked and a waste of money. When asked to speak with the manager they said there is no manager there or anyone for me to speak too. This right here is one of the reasons that make it hard to support black businesses and one of the crucial downfalls to the business, they don't care about the quality of their food or the service they provide as long as money is coming in. Totally hate the experience I had after everything I was told about this establishment.
google avatar

Yelp
Simply put the food was fire!!! The service was friendly and attentive and the ambiance was chill. It was my first time having a sandwich like this and it was delicious. I highly recommend this spot and will be a return customer.

Yelp
MushDC is the best vegan restaurant in the DMV!!! EVERYTHING in the menu is soo good!!

Yelp
Saw a photo of their vegan chicken sandwich on IG so came by this weekend and it is so so so good! I tried the original chicken sandwich and their version of a Philly cheese and thought both were excellent. Everything is perfectly seasoned, including the spice fries. Loved the aji verde sauce as well. Service was fast and prices super reasonable.

Yelp
Today, was the second time I have ordered from Mush. The first time, I ordered a friend went and picked it up. So Today was the first time I physically picked up the order. For one I love being able to order online for pickup (helps with some of my social anxieties). Parking, was available out front or in a garage (first right past the building) . Staff was super friendly and went above and beyond with my order. Apparently, there was a mixup with my order and led them to independently decide (I had yet to get my food so had no idea anything could of been off) to remake something for me...and I ended up with a free sandwich. I really hope that employee is recognized cause it really made my day...not only was the attention to detail their kindness ensured why I will keep coming back. Did I mention the food was amazing? Ingredients are all super fresh! Definitely recommend the plantain aioli if you want a sweet take on a mayo! The sandwiches are amazing cold (remember we got an extra sandwich) so if you're a slow eater like I am ..it definitely holds it's deliciousness. Thank you Mush we will definitely be returning. P.S. for those wondering Mush is located in a food hall setting. If entering from Rhode Island Ave they are the first food spot walking in) Coming in from the garage keep to your left and walk to towards the front Mush can't be missed!

Ron C.

Yelp
I may have found my new go to vegan spot! Great food and quality customer service! I will be back again in the near future!

April S.

Yelp
The customer service was excellent! I ordered the mush & cheese and the shrimp bo po that had fried oyster mushrooms as the "meat." That one was my favorite! The mush and cheese was kool, the flavor of the mushrooms had a grilled taste which was nice but when I opened the sub it wasn't filled with the toppings or the mush & cheese. I was expecting for it to be loaded especially considering the prices. I would go back for the shrimp bo po.

Amber S.

Yelp
Very delicious. Visited twice. It's my go-to when I want vegan food. I try something new each time and I haven't been disappointed with my choices.
google avatar

Rae C.

Yelp
This place is amazing!!! Food is made FRESH and tastes SOOO good. Anyone who hasn't been here is missing out. You can taste the passion in the food and it's all vegan. Can't go wrong with Mush. #blackbusinesses

Isaac B.

Yelp
God this food was good. Just such the right amount of spice and tremendous flavor. It was like I won a prize.

Yvette W.

Yelp
Today was Friday, and I wanted something different for lunch. The answer was Mush! I ordered the "shrimp" po boy. It was absolutely delightful. The mushrooms were abundant, they were seasoned to perfection, and the accompanying sauce complimented the perfectly fried mushrooms. I thoroughly enjoyed the time out with my hubby as we sat at the counter enjoying the informal open space seating. This is a must try.

Tammi S.

Yelp
Although this is only my second time at this establishment, I must say that the food is excellent and the customer service and professionalism is on point! I look forward to future visits with this establishment!

LaTonya W.

Yelp
OMG everything is to include the greens, french toast, fried mushrooms, chickpea scramble, banana grits, mushroom steak and cheese, and fried oyster mushroom sandwich.

Daniel B.

Yelp
I saw the menu automatically assuming that there was meat on the menu and after eating the Mush'n Cheese, I couldn't even tell that this was a vegan restaurant! The flavors were out of this world and fries were so properly seasoned that I should've bought two. I definitely recommend this place to vegans and non-vegans alike!

Anthony T.

Yelp
I've been coming here for about 4-6 months now. Love consistency so after eating here yesterday for brunch figured it was time for a real review. I've never been let down. I'm plant-based for the most part. This is the perfect place to go if your starting your transition from meat to vegan. Most vegan restaurants have a lot of soy based products which is still really bad for you, so I mostly cook from home. But if I want some amazing vegan food without the "impossible meat and soy" I come to Mush for the amazing oyster mushrooms, meals, and sides. Very flavorful, cooked with high quality ingredients, just delicious. This has definitely completely replaced my need for a chicken box and fries, chicken and waffles, any beef, chipotle bowls, and more. You don't need chicken if you have Mush mushrooms for sure. Also owner and staff are all welcoming friendly, really knowledgeable, encouraging, helpful, nice , and definitely doing the best they can to provide a great service to their customers.
