There was an elderly man who were serving customers (as many others mentioned, it's really more of a shop than museum) who was blatantly rude. My husband and I visited last week, initiated hello but the man avoided our gaze, grunted a hello and walked away. We then had to get his attention again, to request for samples. One of the mustards sold was "riesling mustard", we wanted to understand more and so we asked, "what's resting?" The man then said, while rolling his eyes, "wine". Still, we tried to be cordial and responded, "ah okay, wine." Somehow he felt the need to wave his hands around dramatically and repeated, "yes, riesling is wine!" - while frowning and in a very "duh" manner, as if we were supposed to understand German when it is not our native language (we are Singaporeans). Obviously, we left shortly after as we were not obliged to give him any business. In general the shopkeeper was behaving in a racist manner as he was being very friendly to Germans. It was disappointing to encounter such behaviour in Germany but thankfully he is a minority. Do not visit as a foreigner (or non-German speaker) if you don't want to taint your Cologne experience.
