"This South Park scoop shop from the owners of Dark Horse Coffee Roasters does a great coffee ice cream, naturally, but it also excels as creative flavors like cookies and goat cheese cream, roasted banana ice cream with homemade dark chocolate peanut butter cups, and vegan mango coconut cream." - Roxana Becerril

Golden Hill’s Favorite Restaurants | Eater San Diego

"Dark Horse jumped into the ice cream game with the opening of Mutual Friend last year, showing the roasters aren’t a one trick pony. You’ll find more than plain vanilla and chocolate here, with flavors including raspberry ricotta, double chocolate chip cookie dough, and Dark Horse coffee, in a nod to its parent business next door." - Mario A. Dark Horse Coffee Launches Golden Hill Ice Cream Shop - Eater San Diego

"This weekend, Dark Horse Coffee Roasters will debut Mutual Friend, its new gourmet ice cream shop next to Dark Horse’s cafe on 25th Street in Golden Hill. Starting at 11 a.m. on Saturday, October 6 and Sunday, October 7, the first 30 customers in line will win giveaways including branded t-shirts, keeper glasses, and enamel pins in honor of the store’s grand opening. Ice cream-making has always been a hobby for Randy Charlson, who joined brothers Bryan and Daniel, who founded Dark Horse, to launch Mutual Friend. Head ice cream maker Mai Marche along with consulting Bay Area chef Spencer Huewill develop the shop’s monthly-rotating menu, and Marche tells Eater that there will always be at least two or three vegan flavors available. The opening lineup, scooped into freshly-made waffle cones, includes dairy-free Chocolate, Coconut Chai, and Melon Sorbet along with traditional Roasted Banana & Peanut Butter Cup, Fresh Mint Chip, Julian Apple Pie, Roasted Strawberry, and Madagascar Vanilla Bean. Randy’s in-laws own a citrus farm, so expect local produce to also be incorporated as well as, of course, Dark Horse coffee. And the shop plans to tap local breweries for a variety of beer-based flavors. In addition to coffee flavored ice cream, Mutual Friend is offering affogato and cold brew floats as well as ice cream flights. Future menu items will include doughnut ice cream sandwiches made with Dark Horse’s vegan Skinny Donuts. There will be a freezer stocked with pre-filled pints for those who want to skip the line, and the ice cream will eventually be available at all other Dark Horse coffee bars along with other select locations. Mutual Friend will be open Monday through Thursday from noon to 9 p.m., Friday and Saturday from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. and Sunday from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m." - Candice Woo

Google
EXTREMELY disgusted and disappointed. I was really looking forward to getting ice cream today and thoroughly enjoyed the first few spoonfuls in the car, until I thankfully looked down and noticed a hair in the ice cream. Which looked disturbingly similar to a PUBE. My stomach instantly revolted, and the bites I had just enjoyed turned into a complete nightmare. Realistically speaking, this 100% falls on the lack of MANAGEMENT. There should be a clear policy requiring employees to wear hairnets. This shows ZERO food safety and quality control standards being enforced on their end.

Google
I was curious to try this creamery since the flavors sounded unique and interesting and the prices are very reasonable. I left disappointed because I could not find a flavor that I liked. The vast majority of the flavors are salty (even when the flavor description doesn't mention salt). I came for Haole Pie and it was too salty. Milk & cookies was salty. Banana cream pie was extra salty (to be fair it's in the flavor description). The Hawaiian Latte had very strong unpleasant coconut flavor due to the vegan base. Location is inside of a coffee shop, and the counter is by the door. Street parking was easy to find weekday afternoon but probably tricky in the evening and on weekend days. The staff was very friendly in answering questions and offering flavor samples.

Google
I got the dragon fruit with lemon flavored sorbet. I find the texture really interesting. It’s like this stretchy type texture, but I really like it. And the flavors combination were really good. The menu is constantly rotating so not sure about other flavors that they come up with, but for Halloween looks pretty good.

Google
Having been here a few times I can say that this is one of the best ice cream shops in San Diego. Really great and unique flavors and enjoy the flight of ice cream which let's you try just about every flavor if you get two 😉 My only wish is that they would make or stock cookies to go along with the ice cream as last time we brought our own and it was a great combination. Many customers asked us where we got the cookies from (we offered them some) and they agreed cookies are what could set this apart from other ice cream joints in San Diego.

Google
They have a variety of flavors that seem to be trending for christmas (like PSL/pumpkin spice latte) but I find all of their flavors to be wayyyy too sweet and artificial-tasting. For instance the vanilla bean just tasted like vanilla syrup, and the almond cake tasted like too much almond extract. Favorite flavor was Holiday sugar cookie which ironically enough was the least sweet and had yummy chunks of snickerdoodle in it

Nathalie Lawrence

Google
Place was mid but ice cream was reallllly gooood. service was average NPCs Choice of 6 different ice creams so don't expect a lot to choose from

Aldo Mason

Google
The ice cream coffee and service here are amazing everytime I come but lately the store has been incredibly hot making it unbearable to stay inside. The relief of returning outside has become better than the ice cream itself. Please fix this I love this shop and would hate to find a new place.

Brent Smith

Google
Very disappointing experience today. The sorbet I ordered came as a melted mess, like it had been sitting in the sun. The texture was very odd almost like marshmallow fluff. The flavors were nothing noteworthy other than being very sugar forward and having very little true fruit flavors.

Yelp
Cool little ice cream shop located INSIDE dark horse coffee. I got confused looking for a stand alone shop but realized it's in Dark Horse. I went around 6pm and they were sold out of a few flavors so keep that in mind. I got the milk and cookies flavor this time but I'm going back to try to the others. The ice cream itself is not too sweet or creamy. It had a light texture to it. The mix of little cookie chunks were great as it gave it an extra flair.

Yelp
Stopped by Mutual Friend for dessert after having dinner in the area - so glad I found them! I loved their menu selections as they had a few Hawaiian/tropical influenced flavors which are harder to come by. I ordered their Haole pie ice cream and it was delicious! It is part of a coffee shop so you can also get coffee or espresso beverage here as well if you aren't in the market for dessert. Service was friendly and quick!

Yelp
Delicious and unique ice cream flavors served in South Park! Mutual Friend shares its location with Dark Horse Coffee in a convenient corner establishment. Parking: Street parking only-- be aware that you might have to circle around a couple of blocks if you go during busy afternoons and weekends. Ambiance/Service Nice, bright coffee/ice cream shop decorated with string lights above and a large neon sign that says "Dark Horse Coffee." Not a lot of seating inside-- only a couple of 4-person benches and maybe one or two 2-person tables. A large electronic menu resides next to the ice cream counter with descriptions of each flavor. The guy serving us was very patient and nice as we tried out many flavors! At around 7pm on a Wednesday, there was no line. Food: Split singe scoop ($6.50): I ordered the Buttermilk and Blueberries & Couch Potato (I loved the combination of sweet and salty on this one). My husband ordered Vanilla Bean with Olive Oil and Milk and Cookies. What I noticed is that the ice cream is a bit on the runnier side so it might be difficult to eat with a cone. Overall: I'm impressed with the flavors available and I'd love to come back to try out other seasonal flavors when they come out!

Yelp
Was walking from dinner nearby and came across this awesome shop! Simple menu with unique and delicious flavors, part of a Dark Horse Roasters coffee shop, and a few indoor seating! I got the split single scoop of Haole Pie & Strawberry Balsamic and both were DELICIOUS! Walk friendly area and plenty of street parking nearby.

Yelp
Came here after dinner in South Park. Really cute decor inside. They had holiday special ice creams. The service was friendly, and the ice cream was delicious. Worth a check out if you are ever nearby.

Yelp
There's a ton of ice cream shops to choose from in San Diego, and I love seeing what each of them have to offer that differentiates them from the others. Mutual Friend Ice Cream definitely serves up unique flavor combinations that can't be found in other shops! - PARKING - Street parking only - it gets quite busy and the streets are usually packed with cars, so be ready to circle around the neighborhood! - SERVICE/ENVIRONMENT - You walk in and directly below the menu is where you can get some samples. No limits to how many you can try, which I love!! The shop itself isn't too big, just three tables that can seat 4 people. The outside does have a patio area, but I wasn't sure if it was shared with the business next door. Staff is very patient and very friendly! - FOOD - Split Scoop ($6.50): We had two flavors we really liked so I'm glad we were able to do a split scoop on a single! They consistently update their menu, so flavors are always coming and going! You can see their updated menu on their Instagram page. - OVERALL - Really fun flavor combinations here, and they're always playing into nearby holidays and making flavors based off of them!

Yelp
I love ice cream! We were in the neighborhood and stopped by this shop. There was a line because there was a street fair that night. I wanted a flight, but they weren't offering those at the time. I ended up getting a scoop of the tropical guava and te lemon almond cake with raspberry swirl. That flavor was so yummy! Too bad I didn't get a waffle chip like the ones I saw in other photos. I'll need to go back and try their other flavors!
google avatar

Bernadette S.

Yelp
Loved the flavors! They give samples! surprisingly, the blueberry was my favorite. I think the hint of lemon was just the right touch! We came here for something sweet after visiting the Mothership across the street. Staff was so friendly, they let us sing happy birthday to our friend. There are about 3 tables inside to sit down and enjoy. What i liked was that you can get a split scoop to try 2 flavors. Definitely something to try if you are in the area. No parking lot. Just street parking. There's plenty in the nearby neighborhoods!
google avatar

Yelp
We stumbled across Mutual Friend ice cream on Instagram and saw some holiday themed ice creams that we needed to try! We went in and tried the molasses cookie and cranberry orange biscuit which were both seasonal and incredibly tasty. There isn't a parking lot, but there is pretty of street parking around so there isn't any issue if you're okay walking a little way. It shares a shop with dark horse coffee which smelled delicious so we will definitely be back to have a cup soon.
google avatar

Andrew G.

Yelp
I got the coconut based Hawaiian themed ice cream. I can't remember what it was called but it was fantastic. South Park is a cool neighborhood to spend an evening. Parking can be rough.

Yelp
I came to this place twice in the same hour, first time alone, the second time with my friends who were jealous of my discovery when I came back lol Delicious and Unique Ice Cream Flavors, Complete with Samples to try out and Friendly and Approachable Staff! Shout out to Brandon for Recommending me Both The Hawaiian Sweet Roll Ice Cream and Dark Horse Chocolate Chip! My friends also really liked the nice, relaxed environment with the cool, relaxed and comfortable vibes! They run out of their more popular flavors relatively fast so if you want to try their best choices, try to get here early on in the day!

Yelp
I've heard about this place for a while and finally decided to check it out! Its a cute little coffee shop that's part of Dark Horse Roasters. They are always coming out with specialty flavors and holiday-themed ones! We got the classic dark horse coffee and the smores-flavored one (i forgot the name). Both were so good that we got a pint to go!! If you love ice cream, give this place a try!
google avatar

Yelp
The haole pie! This unassuming ice cream shop tucked into the corner of a coffee shop is surprisingly delicious. The haole pie was so good. A cookies and cream with macadamia nut pieces. I got a waffle cone and it was perfect. Really good ice cream!
google avatar

Yelp
So happy that I was finally able to try Mutual Friend, and it has officially become one of my favorite ice cream spots! I've been following them for a while and they've always had some cool and unique flavors (and great marketing, check out their IG page) but for my first time here, I had to try one of their staples. I got the Haupia Haole Pie which is their homage to the classic Haiwaiian flavors. It has coconut and macadamia, plus some oreo bits. Such a subtle flavor blend and they go awesome together! The texture isn't the creaminest and there's some grit to the different elements, but I say that in a positive way. This is not gelato style ice cream. Such a cool and unique flavor but it doesn't go overboard. My gf got the sea salt chocolate w/peanut butter cookies. This one was much creamier than the haupia. A very strong and sweet chocolate flavor with the added peanut butter makes this a must get if you love Reeses pb cups. Lastly, the pricing for what you get is extremely reasonable and probably the best around that I've seen. I got a kids scoop on a cone and my gf got the single scoop on a cone. The kid scoop is the perfect size IMO and she even said she wished she got the smaller size because it's a lot!
google avatar

Julie R.

Yelp
I've gone 2 times for flavors they publicized they have on their Instagram and both times they were out of the flavors....if you are out , please don't post on Instagram you have them or at least update it. Also they never have cones. I've gone 6 or 7 times so don't expect cones. Wish they were more consistent about this.
google avatar

Yelp
I had the pleasure of eating at MF during the South Park walkabout, right after dinner at Curryosity. I've been wanting to try this place for a long time so I got at the end of the long line and it was so worth it. Go for the Haole Pie. All gluten free. The cookies. The macadamias. The best part are the macadamias. Big chunks. Little chunks. So good all together. Can't wait to try the other flavors.
google avatar

Justine H.

Yelp
Such a cute creamery with 'classic with a twist' flavors. I LOVED my cookies and goat cheese cream scoop with just the perfect amount of cookies and goat cheesy flavor. The ube also had a delicious, nutty coconut undertone that complimented the ube wonderfully. Our scoop size was pretty decent and very satisfying for each of us and we sat outside to enjoy them. Of course the service was lovely and let us try all the flavors we requested too.
google avatar

Denise A.

Yelp
Tried this place as it was recommended. I was thinking it was in the caliber of the likes of Stella Jeans or Salt and Straw. Not sure that the flavors rotate? We sampled the Haole Pie which has Oreos, sweet cream and macadamia nuts. This was interesting... we also sampled strawberries and cream as well as milk and cookies. The milk and cookies was a sweet cream with cookie batter in it. We eventually opted for strawberries and cream. But idk, something was lacking. I couldn't finish my 1 scoop. There are only three tables inside which were all occupied at the time of our visit. Further there is bar patio seating outside on the street, but no heaters available.
google avatar

Joey W.

Yelp
Was in the area and looking for ice cream and found this spot. There's some seating inside. Grandpa Badger's Citrus - creamy and citrusy. I normally only have citrus in sorbets but I enjoyed it in ice cream. It makes the ice cream feel a little lighter. However, I felt like the ice cream was missing something bc it didn't have much flavor aside from the citrus. Milk & cookies - creamy with brown butter chocolate chip cookie chunks. Out of the two flavors, I definitely enjoyed this flavor more because the cookie chunks added more flavor. Overall, the ice cream is very creamy but the cream base lacked flavor. It was just sweet but felt a little one dimensional.
google avatar

Jenna B.

Yelp
Ice cream and coffee in one spot. They have a fun menu with a few staples but mostly rotating. I tried the cookies & goat cheese (very delicious) and cultured shock (lemon curd was excellent). A bit on the expensive / splurge price side, though you're paying for quality and innovation.
google avatar

Vina R.

Yelp
Have been craving Mutual Friend ice cream for a bit since I saw the fall flavors on their IG. Was holding off as the nearest location to me is the South Park one and parking is not the best. After circling 2 times I was able to find parking. Thankful for the samples you can get bc off of the names I was having a hard time picking a flavor. I ended up ordering a kids scoop of the Spiced Chai Cardamom as it was Xmas in ice cream LOL. it was sweet, but somehow the cardamom pulled through and gave it that Xmas flavor I was looking for. I really appreciate that Mutual Friend has awesome dairy free options for the vegans/lactose intolerant people. I had to ask if their other location on 25th(?) Street that is no longer open and was told no as that is now just the kitchen for creating all this yumminess. Def coming back for the apple cider sorbet if j make it in time for the fall menu, if not, I'm sure I will be enjoying a Xmas menu.
google avatar

Tiara W.

Yelp
Ohh mannn! I didnt even get a chance for pics because it was so hot my ice cream cone started melting lol but it was really good. It was a vegan chocolate ice cream with cookies inside. I enjoyed it! Service was blah. They seemed bothered but im sure it was because there was no A/C lmao
google avatar

Sarah G.

Yelp
A coworker said this is the best ice cream in San Diego, so I had to check it out. And boy, is it good!!! I got the buttermilk and blueberries in a waffle cone (kids size), and it was a lot of ice cream. It's a little pricey, BUT it's so fresh and really high quality. Soft might be a weird way to describe hard ice cream, but the texture is has a nice mouth feel for homemade ice cream. There are tons of dairy free and vegan options which are nice if you're with a group. They also sell pints to take home. Some of the reviews say they have bad service, but we had no issues and were served immediately.
google avatar

Meagan E.

Yelp
Dang. Delicious. Brutally hot up in there though so no sitting at their tables. And the seating outside has no shade which forced us into our car which was whack. Anyway the dark horse flavor was delicious but gd the caffeine is strong in this one. Paired great w the Holei pie (which tastes like cookies & cream). Oh and the waffle cone was the best damn cone I've ever had. It was a whole lot like a sugar cone in that it was denser with a firmer crunch and nice and sweet (as far as cones go). In my top 2 spots!
google avatar

Tracie M.

Yelp
I'm glad to see that another ice cream shop is back after Juniper Scoop closed at this location. They share the space with Dark Horse Coffee Roasters and offers seasonal flavors of ice cream and also has vegan and gluten free options as well. The names of their ice cream are very creative and I wonder how they come up with them--lol. Love that you can sample as many flavors as you want before making a decision. They also have pint sized containers of their popular flavors that you can purchase to go. My favorite right now is the Apple Cider Sorbet which is very light and refreshing, even for a cool night. All the servers are always so friendly and helpful. Great addition to the community!
google avatar

Tiffany S.

Yelp
What's better than ice cream paired up with a great coffee shop?! We love both. They always have unique flavors, and several times throughout the year they do themed flavors.
google avatar

Yelp
We were finishing lunch at an eatery on 25th St. in the Golden Hill neighborhood and decided to walk a few blocks north to get some coffee and ice cream. I think Mutual Friend Ice Cream might be under the same ownership as Dark Horse Coffee Roasters. The two businesses were adjacent to each other just north of Hwy 94. The inside of the suite was quite small with only a couple of tables for seating. It had more of a café type of ambiance rather than an ice cream shop. The menu was made up of holiday flavors. The top half was the Xmas selection while the bottom half listed the Thanksgiving Leftovers. The normal price for one scoop was $4.75, and a pint costs $9.75. A bonus was that the latter flavors were being sold at a discount ($3 for a scoop, $6 for a pint). I sampled the Hawaiian Sweet Roll and Sweet Corn & Cranberry Sauce from the Thanksgiving category before purchasing a scoop of the second flavor. The sweetness from the corn flavor was subtle while the cranberry had some tartness to it. The creaminess of the product was very good. If I had one regret, then it was the fact that I didn't ask for more taste samples. I may have bought a second scoop or asked for a split scoop which was an additional $0.50.
google avatar

Bryan P.

Yelp
Very good quality ice cream. Kind of a less extravagant salt & straw (which is a good thing).
google avatar

Kenneth R.

Yelp
I'm definitely recommending this ice cream spot when i'm in the South Park area! They share their location with Dark Horse Coffee so I had to try their coffee ice cream and wow I was hooked! I split it with the Chocolate Milk & Cookie and it was so good. The Choco Milk flavor was very chocolatey and heavy so keep that in mind! My friend thought it was too much haha. The price for a single split scoop was fair! The people behind the counter were friendly and there was enough space and tables for everyone to sit
google avatar

Emily A.

Yelp
Unique flavors that rotate! We love walking around South Park with a new flavor from Mutual Friend.
google avatar

Jules F.

Yelp
Well let's just say that I would buy these ice creams just for the cuteness factor. Cute names, cute servings, little waffle cone slices inside. Oh yeah and they even have sprinkles. Pretty cool. But it goes so much further than this! The flavors are delicious and they have a pretty versatile range of vegan and gluten free flavors as well. The ice cream is apparently smile inducing even before trying it, but also happens to be delicious to the last drop. Father tested. Child approved. This place is the bomb.
google avatar

Christopher T.

Yelp
Our first and last visit to Mutual Friend Ice Cream was on 8/7/22 around 7pm. Talk about really bad ice cream, this is the place you should never go to! After finishing a really good sushi meal, we were gonna go to our two favorite ice cream parlors but thought we'd give this place a try. The first indication of a bad experience was the bland atmosphere which felt down-beaten and had no light or joy. This is because the interior has absolutely no character, charm, or personality...this was reinforced by the 2 guys that didn't greet us (there weren't serving anyone) and they never smiled. In fact they looked like they couldn't care less. We waited until one of them decided to look at us and say "What do you want." I was about to walk out but as I thought that this guy needs to be fired, I thought I should at least try something. The board of flavors offers was less inspiring compared to their better counterparts which offer unique names. The guy didn't say a word about offering to taste anything, looking around as much as possible to avoid having to work. We both tried a few of the flavors and quickly noted how disgusting they all are!! Let me say that again, all of the flavors are disgusting. No treat for the tongue or pallet. I could get the same so-called quality at any supermarket, paying $2 a gallon. I decided to get a small Guava which looked sad in the cup while my friend got something that supposed to have banana but was clearly artificial.
google avatar

Anna H.

Yelp
What gets better than a place that has coffee AND ice cream? Mutual Friend offers lots of fun seasonal flavors and fresh ice cream. I got the 'oh my gourd' which was basically a pumpkin pie in an ice cream (literally I found a chunk of pie in there!), and it was sweet and just like heaven. There's places to sit inside to enjoy either Dark Horse or MF. I'll be back to try the other flavors. The neighborhood is great to walk around and enjoy your cup or cone.
google avatar

Christine D.

Yelp
The pear goat cheese sherbert was very satisfying and refreshing on a hot summer day. It's a mild flavor. Not so overwhelming or strong that you won't want to finish the scoop. My kinda of flavor. I was looking for a light treat and this was just that.

Kendal C.

Yelp
MOST DELICIOUS AFFOGATO (espresso and ice cream) I HAVE EVER HAD! Wish I got the young lady who made its name (she was working evening of 2/7) and I got the vanilla bean flavor ice cream. Seriously, for only being two ingredients, that was the most delicious thing I've had in a while. It was a quiet and nice, clean shop too. Great vibe. Will definitely be back!
google avatar

Julia M.

Yelp
The vegan ice cream is amazing. I especially liked the cold brew sorbet. The sugar cone is a bit thick, but it was tasty.

J C.

Yelp
Love their ice cream and the fact that they have vegan options BUT their cones kill me every time. I don't think I've gone their once when the cone hasn't leaked. Really wanted to give 5 stars if it wasn't for this
google avatar

Tiffany Y.

Yelp
Although I've only been here once and they only had their holiday flavors, I can tell this is a great ice cream place. The fact that their peppermint chocolate ice cream was chocolatey and the peppermint wasn't artificial flavoring (actual peppermints!) made this a super delightful place. I can tell that their ice cream is high quality. I will need to come back to try their other flavors! They were super cautious with covid. They had a class protector to protect their employees from customers. I saw that they were wearing gloves and their masks. I appreciate a business taking the proper precautions.
google avatar

Daniel A.

Yelp
Came in on the 4th. The staff were incredibly kind and helpful. They recommended the Cookies and Goat Cheese Ice cream. It was incredible.

Mateo C.

Yelp
This has been my favorite ice cream shop I've been to in San Diego! I have struggled finding an ice cream that doesn't upset my stomach and i finally found Mutual Friend Ice Cream with their gluten free and vegan options! The service has been great every time that i go, and i go pretty often now! I also love that i can easily walk their from my neighborhood which makes me feel not guilty eating ice cream, the staff is always so friendly and great ambiance for a neighborhood ice cream shop! And of course all the ice cream flavors have been amazing and delicious, especially with the waffle cone, so i Highly recommend!:)
google avatar

Casey M.

Yelp
I wish I would've taken a picture of how huge the cone and ice cream altogether was! Super yummy!!! I got the happy camper, and I was in fact a happy camper after my ice cream! Great pricing and quality! The only reason I took off a star is due to limited flavors and they were out of a couple. Otherwise great ice cream spot!

Yelp
A shared location with Dark Horse Coffee Roasters, Mutual Friend is a convenient little ice cream shop for beautiful San Diego nights in South Park. They offer a variety of flavors across the palette and have vegan and gluten free options. We came in on a Saturday night and it wasn't too busy. They offer samples which is a plus but unfortunately they were out of their top flavors, Haole Pie and Roasted Banana PB Cups. We ended up getting the milk & cookies, chocolate milk & cookies, and dark horse coffee flavors via kid scoop in a cup. The portions were massive for kids scoop and the texture was rather creamy and almost gelato-like. The milk & cookies was pretty good with great flavor and cookie bits but the chocolate milk & cookies flavor had a very overpowering chocolate taste which was not to my liking. It was vegan chocolate though so still a plus for the vegan community. The dark horse coffee had a good strong coffee flavor, though the beans felt like weren't recently roasted so a tad of bitterness came across and it was not contrasted with anything else so it fell flat after several bites since the texture was so rich. They have a couple benches inside and the place is overall pretty clean. For the relatively cheap price and location, i felt like this place was above average in value but would definitely want to come back to try the 2 flavors they didn't have when I was there as well as to try their lovely looking waffle cones
google avatar

Yelp
Mutual friend ice cream always hits the spot. They have the best selections and who doesn't love vegan options .
google avatar

Missy F.

Yelp
Quite disappointed they were out of a lot of flavors for it being my first time here. I got there about 6:45pm on a week night. I got a flight. Thought the ice was good , but nothing that wow'd me. I can say I absolutely did not like the Double Chocolate Cookie Dough! Yuck.. something was off about it and it had a gritty taste to it. I did like the Dark Horse Coffee ice cream( coffee ice cream is my all time favorite) very bold flavor to this one! The Raspberry Ricotta was also pretty good. Very smooth rich taste. I can't remember my last one because I ordered double Caramel.. but there's no way that's what she gave me.

Yelp
This ice cream / coffee place opened a year ago in South Park, and I'm bummed that this here ice cream lover didn't discover it until now! Some flavors rotate and others are fixtures. We tried the buttermilk with blueberry jam (sadly, not a fixed flavor) and OMG. It was divine. The salted caramel chocolate with peanut butter cookie was creamy and nicely balanced. The kid's cone is a nice after-dinner size; and you can get a split single scoop if you want more than one flavor but don't want to overload. (Salt & Straw does this. It's nice.) The orange blossom sorbet with chocolate flakes just wasn't my cup of tea, but not every flavor is for everyone. The four stars rather than five is because the sorbet's texture was a little icier than I prefer, and the cones, while tasty (love the dash of cinnamon) are thicker and a little hard on the teeth. But they don't get soggy on you! Paired with the buttermilk ice cream, it was like taking a bite of the past. Friendly staff. Can't speak much to the shop, as we took our ice cream to go. But I look forward to returning and trying more flavors! Might check out the coffee and pastries next time, too.

Yelp
The ice cream was good for it being vegan and gluten free. It's a thicker consistency than regular ice cream but the flavors are pretty good. Still prefer Stella's

Yelp
Came here after having dinner in South Park. Theres no parking lot but easily found parking across the street in the residential area. There were a few core flavors Guatemalan Vanilla Dark Chocolate sorbet (vegan) Roasted Banana with PB cups Gradpa Badgers Citrus (taste sort of like a creamsicle) Dark Horse Coffee Double caramel The other "Hawaiian" Flavors were Tropical Guava (Vegan) Lava Flow (Vegan) Haole Pie Pina Colada (vegan) I asked why there was a Hawaiian theme, they said besides their core flavors, they rotate their other flavors about each month and usually have some kind of theme, so the previous month was based on teas, this month was Hawaiian. I ended up getting a single scoop of Haole Pie which was Macadamia Nut with Cookies..OMG so good! I did sample a few before hand and they were all so good. I think they start with a sweet cream base which makes them so smooth and sweet! I did try one of the vegan flavors and you wouldn't know it was vegan at all. They were out of a few that i wanted to try; Coffee and Guatemalan vanilla, so i guess I'll just have to go back again! It was so good, i wish i had seen the flight of 4 for $7.50, they also have pints for $9 in the freezer by the door, they did have some of the previous months tea flavors and the coffee that i wanted to try but I'll wait till i try it next time. I did see they also serve coffee, i bet this ice cream would make the best affogato. Much better than Salt and Straw. Salt and Straw was founded in Portland, Mutual Friend is founded in San Diego! I also feel better about support local businesses! So good, My new favorite Ice cream spot!

Yelp
Unbelievably good. Situated right off the 94 freeway on 25th St. next to Dark Horse coffee, Mutual Friend ice cream is a true gem smack dab in the heart of Golden Hill. First off, shout out to Jordan for taking care of us on our recent visit. She couldn't have been more friendly, patient, and generous. Thank you! We had just wrapped up a meeting in East Village and thought about heading to Salt & Straw in Little Italy for dessert. However, the prospect of renting a scooter or taking a Lyft then waiting in line diminished the appeal of this option. Plus, none of us had been here, so we decided to give it a shot. Best decision we made all week. Upon arriving in, you're greeting with a diverse but not overwhelming menu (pictured). After sampling to our hearts content, we decided to share a flight of the following: Vanilla bean: perfection - soooo smooth with an incredible vanilla flavor. I don't usually order vanilla when going out for ice cream, but this was so good that a friend ended up buying a pint to take home. Coffee: as you might expect, incredibly delicious. A clear coffee taste balanced with cream and sugar. A true delight. Haole Pie: Like cookies and cream featuring a decadent, rich taste. Strawberry balsamic: tastes how it should, delicious fruit flavor contrasted by a hint of balsamic. All in all - an unforgettably amazing experience. Go for it!

Yelp
Creamy, delicate flavors, homemade waffles, in short, perfection. Employees were very friendly, patient, more than willing to provide multiple samples to the indecisive buyer. Loved the hipster neon sign look. Their coffee flavored ice cream was delicious, esp since they used dark horse coffee for it. Bathrooms are v clean. Parking is easier than expected.

Yelp
FOOD Bonus already for having vegan friendly options! I tried the roasted banana with peanut butter cups and milly brownie. I also got to sample some from my boyfriend's, who got the vanilla bean. They were all so delicious! STAFF So friendly and cheerful! They were so nice to offer and let us know to sample anything we want so we didn't even have to ask! I was so pleased by how comfortable they made us feel. OTHER Seating inside is limited, but there are four benches right outside. Dog friendly. WILL I COME BACK? Absolutely!
