Railway Heights Market Landlord Shocks Houston Restaurant Owners With Eviction | Eater Houston

"This Latin-Asian restaurant's owner says landlords encouraged tenants to stay by promising increased traffic from a new downstairs beer garden and reassured them during rebranding efforts, but promotion ceased and business declined sharply. Once capable of earning up to about $62,000 in peak months, recent months saw revenues drop to roughly $3,000, prompting relief that the uncertainty is over even as he criticizes the timing and lack of notice; he plans to focus energy on an existing South American outpost and redeveloping a ceviche concept elsewhere." - Brittany Britto Garley

Chef Guerrero knocks it out of the park again. Great, varied flavors and imaginative Latin/Asian fusion. The Lomo had a wonderful umami, crispy pork belly was terrific. Everyone really enjoyed their food. Excellent cup of Chicha morada to wash everything down. Upstairs at The Heights Railway Market, a space full of artisan vendors and interesting street food. Go!

Extremely delicious! I would come back every week to eat again. The dish presentation is high quality. Sauces like no other. Even the dressing. Despite it cuisine food it also tastes authentic and homemade. The flavors are amazing! I ordered the following: Mykuna Ramen Chicken Yakitori Skewer Ribs Uchu Salmon Kama Special of the Day Fish & Chips Nikkei Pork Belly Bao Fried Bao Dessert

Google
Really enjoyed the fusions of flavors here. It was different in a good way. Serving size was nice for the price and came out quick. The ramen had good heat and the noodles were cooked well. I also liked the deconstructed sushi/Sushimi appetizer where you made your own ‘rolls’. Lots of cool options that I can’t wait to try when I am back

Google
Food was delicious and was very well presented even though it was just in a disposable open paper box. The staff were extremely polite. It was a self served service but it was not too busy when we were there so the staff brought the food all the way to my table. Highly recommend. Thank you.

Very delicious food!! I order Pork Belly Fried Rice and Yuca fries, even though I really wanted to take some home with me I just couldn’t stop eating 😋as it was soooo good! Highly recommend this place, they have a good variety menu .👍🏼

Google
So so good!! I wanted to try multiple menu items because everything sounded so good but we were only getting one item from a restaurant so that we could try multiple different restaurants in the market. We ordered the Pork Belly Bao and it was delicious!! We will absolutely be returning!

This was my order of Lomo Saltado (optional 2 fried-egg add-on pictured). The eggs were delicious, yolk at perfect texture and not over/under-cooked. The fries were golden and with just the right crunch. So tasty to dip those fries in the yolk and flavor them with the savory juice from the meat (lomo). The accompanying cilantro, herbs, onions, and tomatoes added a depth of rich flavor for the palate. The Mexican drink jamaica (AKA hibiscus 🌺) was from Churrazon (across from Mykuna). Service was excellent, attentive and fast. 📢 If you love both Ramen and Latin-American victuals, I 💯 recommend Mykuna to you! ¡Buen provecho! Today I was really amazed when I had an excellent experience with the food from MYKUNA. The Ribs Uchu and Fish & Chips Nikkei were super delicious... to lick my fingers 😋 and the portion size great and the price reasonable. I'll come back!

Yelp
Mykuna is a Peruvian restaurant located in Railway Heights. I've checked it out twice. Part of what really excited me about Mykuna is that it's from the same chef as Andes Cafe, a restaurant that closed down several years ago. They now have an outpost at Post, another food hall. I was also excited because it's Peruvian food---in my opinion, one of the most underrated cuisines out there. I ordered the lomo saltado which is a classic Peruvian dish. Take some stir fry beef in a delicious brown sauce, add white rice and fries, and there you have it. The meat was tender, the fries soaked up the saucy goodness, and the rice was, well, rice. I will say Mykuna is a little pricier than I expected. Even their soft drinks cost more than you would think. With that being said, they have Inca Cola which is a Peruvian soda. I ate half of my food and brought the rest back to work. When I was leaving work, I was walking to my car and accidentally dropped my to-go box on the concrete. The lomo saltado spilled all over the ground. What a fail on my part. Delicious leftovers no more.

Yelp
We stumbled upon this restaurant purely by accident. My family and I ended up at Railway Heights Market/Food hall for a yelp event at Croff'd (a waffle croissant restaurant downstairs) and afterward found ourselves in need of a dinner plan. We decided to go with Mykuna, which is marketed as a Latin Asian fusion restaurant. However, based on what we ended up ordering was definitely more Asian heavy. We ordered 3 items (two mains and a starter) which was plenty of food for two adults and a toddler. The salmon sashimi starter was a little underwhelming, so don't expect same level quality as a dedicated sushi restaurant. The tonkatsu ramen was a good size portion and very tasty, though will say the flavor is more on the non-traditional side. We also ordered a friend chicken dish which was a special of the day, which was def the star of the show- though I can't remember the name of it. The staff was friendly and the food took about 15min to come out, which was an appropriate wait. There is a bar directly across the way so we had a couple beers while we waited and sat outdoors on the shaded patio area. Overall we had a great time. We probably won't make a special trip to come back here, but I'd eat here again if I'm in the area.

Yelp
I was in Houston for work and my hotel was just down the street, so I came to Railway Heights for three meals in a row. I spotted Mykuna when I was here on a Wednesday at 3 pm, and asked the person there when they close that day. I was told 9 pm, consistent with their published hours of 11a-9p. I came back at 8p that evening, and there was someone there, but he said they were closed. Came back the next day at 11:20a. Again, there was someone there, but he said they were closed. Call before you go to make sure they are open.

Yelp
I was looking for something hot and fresh and I found it. This was my first time visiting the place and I can say it's pretty cool. They have so many shops and restaurants to choose from. We left the restaurant and went to a pastry shop and I had chocolate chips cookies. Houston Texas is saturated with beautiful restaurant's and I said I'm in the mood to try them all... Happy fooding and enjoy your day...

Yelp
Where to start... Placing the order was easy and the lady taking our order was super nice, but then it kind of goes downhill from there. The wait time for our food was extremely long and we tried to be understanding because it was a busy Saturday...but I was able to order food from two other places after placing my order at Mykuna. I got those dishes and my order still wasn't ready. The kitchen was really backed up but they kept taking order after order. They finally decided to stop taking orders and told people to come back in like 20 minutes. I went to ask the lady how much longer it would be and she thought I had already gotten my food. My Pork Belly Fried Rice was really sad, y'all. Like I can't even...it is the smallest portion of fried rice I've ever seen. You can see it in the picture, the rice doesn't even fill half of the food tray. And the menu states it comes with scrambled eggs, but no eggs were in mine. The rice wasn't fried all the way and the pork belly was seriously overdone. The Fish and Chips Nikkei was decent. I really liked the tempura seaweed and the fish was not dry. The seasoning at the bottom of the tray was pretty good. The Lomo Saltado was also okay, could use a little more salt. Although this was my first time trying it so I don't have anything to compare it to. The meat was tender, I like red onions, and who would say no to french fries? I would honestly try them again on a not-so-busy day. But I am steering clear of any fried rice.

Yelp
Overall, I was excited to try this place out since it was uniquely serving latin asian fusion food, but I guess my expectations were higher. My review is based on two dishes: Mykuna Ramen (not good) and Lomo Saltado (good). Mykuna Ramen: The tomato broth tasted too light and lacked thick, bold, slightly salty broth flavor you typically find in ramen. The albacore tuna was also dry. The ramen noodles were actually okay while the purple egg was cooked properly. I tried this with an open mind knowing it wasn't your typical pork based broth, but it definitely could have been better. Lomo Saltado: This was a solid good dish. Meat, fries, and rice were cooked properly. I would definitely try other dishes next time, but not the ramen.

Yelp
Horrible service. After being told of the bad service and that we would write a bad review, instead of offering to make things right, the server says "ok." Ok? It's not okay. Make things right! On a tangent, what is a 2.5% "eco" fee? Are we in California?
google avatar

Maria V.

Yelp
Service is terrible. I ordered food specifically asking for no spicy food bc I was ordering for kids. I didn't know the ramen came as spicy. What "regular tonkotsu" comes as spicy? Shouldn't it be named "spicy tonkotsu" instead? Well anyways, I asked for some plain broth so my 10 year old niece could eat it and they refused. So I threw the whole thing away. Doesn't matter though. My one bad review isn't what's going to sink this already abandoned place.

Yelp
Tasty but small portion for the price. On weekends, wait can be quite long as each meal is cooked to order and there's a tiny kitchen with one chef.
google avatar

Jonathan T.

Yelp
Food: I personally only had the Lomo Saltado, but the portion side was incredibly small for the price (17 pretax) Was hoping to taste more of a mixture of Latin and Asian spices in the tenderloin, but it honestly tasted like a simple beef stir fry with a serving of rice and vegetables. Service: Nice cashier even though it was a busy Saturday. Didn't have to wait very long for food. Overall: Didn't get to try anything else, but I probably wouldn't give it another chance after this.

Yelp
Loved this spot. First time ordering here. Ordered the Lomo Saltado (vegetarian with tofu). Definitely recommend. Soo good! Friendly staff and great flavor. Will definitely be coming back!

Yelp
Came here for the Asian Market Night and told us they were closed. Clearly they didn't closed at all and still took orders after a number of us asked. The hours are clear on yelp. But it seems to me they were selecting who they served would serve. Wouldn't recommend for the service in market style location.

Yelp
fantastic menu, brilliant idea fusing latin & asian, edamame was quite memorable, had to go get a couple bags from the store to make my own!

Orlando L.

Yelp
I paid $45 dollars for 2 water bottles and 2 Tonkotsu ramen bowls which were of very small portion. The pork was inedible, and the noodles itself had absolutely no flavor which tasted like boiled noodles. The soup tasted like water as if there were no broth in it at all. I would never recommend this to a fellow peer. Me and my friend received stomach aches after this so called "ramen" bowl. I would much rather cook ramen at home then to ever come back to this place as both of us didn't even touch our dish after a couple of tastes.Save your money and go to Jinya or a actual ramen place for a cheaper price.

Iphon E.

Yelp
First off this isn't a complaint, this is criticism. The service here was absolutely awful. They were rude to me right off the bat, then they have the audacity to make me wait 30+ minutes. At this point I was already out of it but I just wanted to see how the food was. The food finally arrived, the picture speaks for itself. I have no idea how this place even exists, but it does. I guess there has to be a balance between good and bad in life and this is an example of the pure evil in the ramen industry. Stay safe out there, there's always people that don't want you to succeed in life and want you to have shitty ramen.

Anuar J.

Yelp
I hope the chef takes this constructive criticism to improve this dish. Wife and i were intrigued by the latin asian fusion and wanted the ramen. Was told the egg wasn't perfect but it was the least of our concerns. The ramen we got was very thick and grainy, more like a curry; the tuna chashu was quite dry and overcooked on the top and worst off the two got stuck together. Mushrooms were good as well as the noodles themselves and green onion. But the raw purple onion was totally unecessary and you just can't serve a fatty fish like tuna with such thick and rich 'broth'. I suggest the chef considers making the broth more watery like a caldo de pescado (which i think was the inspiration for this dish) and ditch the purple onion. This dish has potential but the execution just wasn't it unfortunately.

Yelp
The food here is really good. The only reason I am giving 4 stars is because I feel it is a bit high priced for what you are receiving. Also the wait to get your food may be a bit long depending on when you go. Overall I like the concept and thought the presentation was nice. The food was tasty and I would order again.

Susan A.

Yelp
The steak was really tender. I love when food is hot and fresh and this was. Very flavorful as well. The rice was fresh and sticky like it was supposed to be. I want to try everything on this menu! The Railway Heights Market location is fun!

Yelp
It's AMAZING! 5 star cuisine food quality meal at a casual yet gorgeous food hall. I took my mother and friends and we each tried a different dish. Seriously, no plate was better than the other. They were all delicious...full of flavor, juicy, perfect portions and great presentation. My favorites: Fish & Chips, Lomo Saltado, Chicken Skewer, Fried Bao Dessert, Strawberry Ramune and even at my age mid 40's I love their gummy bag! The 20 minute wait was quick considering it's made fresh and not a fast food place. Sitting outside in the patio and then walking to see the indoor shops was an added treat. You will love the ambiance and energy of this place.

Yelp
Food was excellent. The service great. Our food was ready fairly quickly. Maybe they have worked out the grand opening kinks. We ordered the Lomo Salteado, meat tasty and that rice was amazing. Eggs are extra. Also ordered the chicken yakitori skewer dish, well marinated and delicious take on the chimichurri. Portions are small so good for a nice lunch or light dinner.

Yelp
Lovely place at the Heights Railway Market. Ordered the fish and chips. Unfortunately, fish batter was SUPER salty. It otherwise would have been very good. Liked the crunchy fried seaweed on top, fish was hot and crunchy as well. Enjoyed the lime included and the sauce. Hoping next visit will produce a non-salty version and therefore will be perfection! Ordered the yuca fries. Not a fan/felt it wasn't worth price.

Yelp
Great place, great customer service, the food was really good, I love their lomo saltado, my only regret is not knowing about this place sooner, definitely recommend

Camilo L.

Yelp
This place is amazing, the wait wasn't bad at all, and the food was so delicious, the flavor was very rich, the meat was soft and very well cooked, i love the flavor of this place. Will be coming back soon, just be prepared to pay good money for this plates.

Maria R.

Yelp
Paid $17 for a lomo saltado that has 3 pieces of meat. The flavor wasn't good and definitely not worth the money. There are better Latin restaurants in the area. Would not recommend.

Connie G.

Yelp
We ordered the fish and chips, lomo saltado, and fried bao. The portions were smaller than what I expected but I think the food tasted good. The presentation also made the food look appetizing. I would gladly pay for good tasting food even if it was smaller portion. If they just added 1/4 more of the serving (fish and chips/lomo saltado) I would have no more complaints. Bottom line, I would definitely come back.

Michael K.

Yelp
Absolutely delicious! Great mix of asian and latin foods, plenty of options, and nice staff. Got the chaulafaun sensei(spelling?) And it was just the right amount of meat, veggies, egg, and rice. Plantains were a nice touch!

Julian G.

Yelp
One of the best lomo saltados in houston. The food is very tasty and the place is great. I will definitely come back to try their entire menu. My wife and I loved it.

Jon F.

Yelp
About time a food joint where you can savor the flavors of South America the guys who prepared our meals we say this THANK YOU!!! You guys did amazing and I look forward to explore more your cuisine. Thank you David and I look forward to the adventure of Great Ecuadorean and South America food.

Leandro C.

Yelp
We had the lomo saltado (USD17) and the pork belly bao (USD11) - the food was ok, but the portions are VERY SMALL for the price. The store is clearly new and you could over-hear the discussions in spanish going on in the kitchen about lack of speed (we had a long wait, but understandable considering that they cook everything as you order, so no major complaints there). Interesting concept, but there are much better places out there in terms of price vs quality - we will not return

Freddy S.

Yelp
Great place to enjoy delicious food with a twist . The sashimi salmon with leche de tigre is on point as well as the lomo saltado, a Peruvian favorite. I'll be coming back to try more of the dishes in the menu soon. Happy to see Chef David Guerrero mixing it up with a Latin / Japanese fusion. I can't wait to try out his upcoming Cafe Andes featuring ceviches from all over Latin America .

Zach S.

Yelp
If you are making a trip to Heights Railway Market, this place is a good place to eat. I got fried rice with egg, shrimp, plantains, and chicken. The portion was generous and meal was delicious. Staff were very friendly!

Andres G.

Yelp
fried rice was good ramen was bland even with the spicd. there is definitely better ramen
