6 North Carolina Small-Batch Distilleries Worth Tapping Into - Eater Carolinas

"With “luxurious, bold and sophisticated spirits,” Mystic Farm & Distillery offers an unparalleled spirit lineup of bourbon, whiskey, bourbon liqueurs, gin, vodka and spirits. The “soul” of the lineup is barrel-strength Soul of Mystic, a North Carolina spirit distilled from North Carolina farmland-grown corn and wheat. Mystic’s exceptional bourbon starts with 45 percent wheat that is aged for two-plus years for a smooth finish and aromatic blend (think butterscotch and caramel with a toffee, spice, toasted coconut finish). Barrel-strength bourbon offers include the likes of Heart of Mystic with a non-chill filtered base. And for vodka lovers, there’s now Mystic Vision vodka, a luxe vodka with a clean finish. All spirits are available by pickup only at the distillery within 24 to 48 hours of order placement. And, with COVID protocol in place, premium tours/tastings of the Triangle’s only farm distillery are on offer to view the production process firsthand from grain to glass. Two-hour tours are on offer via one six-person ticket (buy one ticket and experience Mystic with up to six total people)." - Melissa Howsam

My husband surprised me with a private tour of my favorite bourbon distillery during our honeymoon week. It was beyond what I imagined. We spent the afternoon learning about the science of making bourbon while sipping on specially crafted cocktails. Mystic Farm is a working farm and event space large enough for weddings. The farm so peaceful and idyllic that you forget you’re in the city. The folks at Mystic love what they do and do it very well. Thank you Mystic Farm for an educational afternoon of sipping delicious cocktails.

What a great afternoon in Durham NC Take a tour of the distillery, get samples if their bourbon, vodka and gin. Try mixed drink made with their spirits all for $20. Would definitely recommend!!! Aaron was an amazing bartender and guide. Take a tour. Walk the property. Relax.

Mystic Farms did not disappoint! They are part of Harvest Host and we stayed one night. The property is large with options to park. The parking area was flat and easy to get around although towing a car. It was a rainy day, so we parked in the parking lot instead of the field. We sampled their Bourbon (it’s so good)! The host was very welcoming. We bought a couple of bottles. The property venue is very nice. Weddings must be gorgeous here!! Such a nice vibe! Mystic, thank you for letting us be your guests and being a Harvest Host. We will be back!

We did the bourbon tasting & absolutely love it. Informative & fun. Good size group but they are well organized & everyone had fun. Afterwards we were able to take a walk around the property which I especially loved. They had a food truck today and we were able to grab food afterwards which was perfect.

Had such a fun time at mystic distillery! My friends and I had a lovely time, very friendly and welcoming staff that made the tour personal and enjoyable. Bourbon was delicious! So appreciated how they walked you through the process and answered all questions. Very generous and a fantastic value for the price of the tour. An awesome place with awesome booze—definitely recommend!

CanNOT say enough good things about this place! Staff was Super sweet and informative, spirits are incredibly delicious, and grounds are just lovely and peaceful. They were kind enough to let me see their barrel room and see part of the distilling process. Can’t wait to come back during the spring for events!

Super cool place and great spirits. The tasting room is great and they have free tastings. It’s super nice to get a drink and walk around the grounds. Great people working here.

The Tour is a MUST. The owner is too funny and you can tell he loves his job. The drinks are tasty and made on sight of course. As a big, “Dirty Dancing,” fan, I need to go back and check on Baby…

Yelp
Wonderful and entertaining tour. Highly recommend this whiskey and the tour!! The grounds are also very nice to hang out at. 10/10 recommend. Great service.

Yelp
Happy Mother's Day to me!! Not only did we find the best distillery in North Carolina and taste some amazing bourbon, we also got to jump in on a Bourbon & Chocolate Pairing Class! We were greeted with so much genuine friendliness and smiles we couldn't help but feel welcome! Along with the chocolate pairing we were treated to tastings of many of the spirits they are masterfully creating as well as an informative tour of the distillery process. The farm is beautiful with plenty of space to spread out, move around and explore. The event space is massive and perfect for any event you can imagine especially when you add in all the outdoor space! Although we tasted most all of the spirits, Broken Oak is hands down the best bourbon ever and should definitely be sipped by everyone! We're sharing our bottle with all who visit!

Yelp
I recently visited during their Halloween event and I really enjoyed the grounds and atmosphere. It wasn't busy at all so we were able to walk right up to the bar and order our drinks. The bartender asked our drink preferences to make recommendations but we just went with the Halloween drink specials. I went with the Purple People Eater and they definitely didn't skimp on the alcohol. There's a BBQ food truck out back so I ordered the loaded fries with the brisket. The brisket was tender but honestly pretty fatty so I'd try something else next time. My wife ordered the BBQ Sundae which is essentially a parfait with layers of bbq, coleslaw, and baked beans. The Mystic Farm Distillery is a great location and it just felt nice sitting outside sipping drinks on a warm October evening.

Yelp
Went here on a Thursday night for a line dancing class. We had so much fun!!! This is a hidden gem. You can't see it from the road and you would never know it was here. I can't believe we have such an amazing line dancing venue so close to our home. We will definitely be back! And the best part is you can bring teens and the younger crowd here for a great time. They don't serve booze during the classes so it's a safe space for anyone wanting a clean place to go without being pressured to have a beer. ;)

Yelp
First time here for - and it was for a wine & design paint night. What a fun spot! Our first drink was included, I had a Dark & Mystic - yum! In addition to their cocktails they also had some beers on tap and canned wine. We had the entire back building to ourselves for the paint night. The staff came by halfway through our session so we could purchase additional beverages if we chose to. The only thing that could have made this evening better was some heat in that building, it was soooo chilly in there!
google avatar

Kate W.

Yelp
We took a cocktail class which included a. tour with many samples . The two founders did our tour which was very informative (and I used to live in Lexington, KY) . There was a lot of humor in the tour which I appreciated and we learned a lot . Congratulations on your 5 year old bourbon award!! I liked that they had a variety of bourbons, rum and even gin so everyone found something they liked. You can even do a group class to make your own barrell. Gotta come back for that! Very fun!! I will definitely come back!

Yelp
My 2nd visit from Florida! This is a fantastic business -- the building & grounds & production facility & tours & product (Bourbons and Gin) and especially the staff. I travel a lot and have friends with breweries & distilleries so I don't gloat randomly on a place. I came back from Florida to stock up and these guys even remembered me. That is customer service!

Yelp
Cool place! We were there for a comedy night. Great fun. The whiskey is excellent! The atmosphere for the comedy venue was cool, surrounded by whiskey aging barrels.

Yelp
We enjoyed a Saturday night with Harvest Host guests camping at Mystic Farm. What a beautiful space! Movie night was the big draw-- outdoor screen just outside the tasting room and near the clean modern restrooms. They offered samples and the spiced was my favorite bourbon, but they were short on supply and didn't offer any drinks made with it. I look forward when they venture into rum next. Right now it's only bourbon (and hand sanitizer). If you join Harvest Host and your camper/van/bus is self contained you can spend one night at a time. Their parking lot has a view of the pond and is pretty level. What a nice way to spend a Saturday night.

Yelp
Great place to visit and try some great bourbon! Took my dad here for the private tour and tasting. Ending up leaving with 6 bottle! Couldn't resist this bourbon. Great ppl run the business and super nice and informative about the history and making process.

Leighton S.

Yelp
My friends and I had an amazing time. Our tour was so knowledgeable and fun. The bourbon was fantastic! I HIGHLY recommend visiting. The bartender was so kind and fun. The ambience of this place was unmatched. 10/10 experience!

Yelp
Fantastic experience. Did the $20 tour and it was enjoyable and memorable -- and I am not a big fan of bourbon. First, they start you with a strong welcome cocktail. Then a short video, followed by walking through the process to make bourbon. Our tour was given by one of the co-owners. It was informative, insightful and fun. One person in our tour group asked a ton of questions and the co-owner was patient and knew all the answers. I learned a ton on this tour but shared in a fun, light-hearted way. His passion was evident. Then they take you back to the tasting room when you can try pretty much all their products, which were delicious, including their BBQ sauce. It was a great value at about $20 and highly recommend if you are a fan of bourbon or not.

Yelp
Went for my husband's birthday, did the distillery tour, everyone was so friendly and the tour was great with lots of personal interactions with the staff due to the smaller size of our tour. Super laid back and beautiful space. My husband is more of the bourbon fan but I loved their gin as well. Will be back!
google avatar

Janice K.

Yelp
This place is worth stopping if you are anywhere near Durham, NC and you enjoy bourbon. They have a great gift shop that has windows into the production area as well as a bar for tastings or cocktails. The overflow parking is in a field that can get muddy.
google avatar

Yelp
New to the area and was looking for a couples activity for 4. We had no idea there was a distillery within 10 minutes of our home. After getting dropped off by our DD, we attended the tour that was full of history, laughs, and amazing science! It was very interactive and we were able to taste everything along the way. We'll definitely be back for the shop and future events. Our husbands had an amazing time too and we were impressed by the quality of product coming out of this family owned and operated distillery.

Yelp
Attended the Yelp Elite event with a friend. It was a nice event and a nice night! A couple of things I would change - near the check in area have a lot more lighting so we can see the table. Also there needs to be more lighting in the parking area, it was very dark going to the cars. Give more instruction, it wasn't until I walked across the bridge that I saw there were games too!! We did have to RSVP so it was a private event and they prepared for more than enough people. Great activities and a good live band that played a great mixture of music! Staff were very nice! The tasting was nice and the food truck was good! Prices are expected and not overpriced for drinks and bottles. It was a very nice event! I can't wait to become a Yelp Elite!!

Yelp
Fine your of a very clean distillery operation with great narrative pertaining to the recipes and preparation of spirits. Excellent stop when you want to see how it's done by professionals. Highly recommend Mystic.

Yelp
Did a chocolate and Bourbon pairing class. It was great fun and super interesting! We got to sample several bourbons and learned about the distillation process. You could also take a free tour if you wanted but we were with friends and didn't have the time. We will be back. Also, the class was inside their air conditioned event center so it was very comfortable. Next time we go we will have more time to walk around the farm. The bourbon was great and there is a wonderful Bourbon cordial which is a great sipping blend they make and sell by the bottle also.

Yelp
Mystic was my first distillery tour, and I thought it was wInderdul. Everyone was so knowledgeable, and friendly. The drinks were very good, and reasonably priced. The did an amazing job of explaining the process, and taking through to view everything step by step. I love that they have an area outside with rocking chairs, to just sit and relax with a drink in hand. The location is great as well. It has this lovely country feel, which I appreciate. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend this to tour to everyone.

Yelp
Went comedy night, Nov. 2023 and it was awesome. This was my first time so if I had known I would have brought food like some of the others. The staff and drinks were amazing. The comedy was top notch and I laughed my backside off. The California Lady was great and the closer Brent should be in Vegas. Can't wait to go back.

Yelp
Went to a Halloween event here. It was so delightful!! There was a taco truck, games like corn hole, connect four and jenga, a bourbon tasting, and delicious drinks. The staff were so amicable, and the live music was great. I wish I'd seen it during the day--even at night, the beauty of the property was astounding! They do weddings as well, and it's now on my list of possible venues. Check them out when you have a chance!

Yelp
I have been here twice for the luxury charcuterie pairing and cocktail mixing class. I waffled between a 3 and a 4. This is a cute little distillery in Durham. They have a bar, pond, and a separate building for events. In addition, the bourbon is tasty. The reason for the less stars is because the event preparations are lacking. First of all, the luxury charcuterie with pairing was actually a single small gherkin pickle, a tiny square of chocolate, a small piece of cheese, and a ketchup container of pulled pork. At the second event, they gave a full donut, which was much appreciated. The other reason for the less stars is that many of the employees, including those who serve food and drinks, do not wear masks. I understand rules are getting more lax. However, at least employees should be wearing mask. The cocktail class was fun but the second of the two drinks taught was really not tasty-Mystic gin and soda. They could ask the guests before the event what they would like to make or give out a survey about the options. Overall, we are lucky to have something like this in Durham, but they really need to put more effort into the details.

Yelp
My boyfriend and I stopped in for some samples on our stop in Durham and ended up having the best time. There are friendly goats right at the front entrance (in a pen) so that hooked me in immediately. The owners and staff were the only people there when we got there, and they were able to share the history of their business - it was really cool to talk with them! The space is gorgeous and so relaxing. We had a few old fashioned and were really impressed. We will definitely make a point to come back next time we're in the state!

Yelp
My family and I absolutely love Mystic bourbon so we took a tour of the facility one Saturday. They do tours on Saturdays at 4:00. Tours are only $10 and if you check in on Yelp it's only $5. The place is absolutely beautiful! They have gorgeous hard wood floors and old sliding barn doors that they made themselves. The bar top is a stunning piece of magnolia that they sanded down and polished themselves. It would be a perfect venue for a small wedding or rehearsal dinner. They are in the process of building an outdoor pavilion and fire pits which will make the place even better. During the tour you learn all about the making of bourbon and get to taste it at various stages of production. They just started making rum and they let us taste that too. The place is amazing, both owners are incredibly nice and informative. I cannot wait to go back!

Yelp
I went for one of their monthly comedy shows. They have a really nice indoor event space (which was welcome because it was hotttt today!)! Little stage, comfortable audience chairs, a bar with a good selection and a very friendly bartender. I had the BEST cucumber mojito! And they had a food truck. The outdoor space looks nice as well. The show was great and I just enjoyed everything!

Yelp
My partner and I did the Deluxe Distillery Tour and Tasting Experience and had an incredible time! Our tour guide Kimberly was both extremely informative as well as passionate about the work she does there. Her excitement made the tour that much more enjoyable. We had such a fun time, we all felt like longtime friends by the end of it. If you're in the area, be sure to support this small, local, women-owned, sustainable business!

Yelp
We came here on a booze bus tour and I was seriously shocked at how amazing the spirits were!! They put in so much time and attention to perfecting every single bottle that leaves the distillery. They gave us a wonderful tour of the facility that was informative and fun. (Not to mention we got to sample the goods in progress!) The bourbon was smooth and worthy of a gold star from any Scotsman (or woman ‍) and the GIN oh my word!! It's easily one of my favorite and I'm a Gin enthusiast!! The even have navy strength Gin that tastes just as smooth as the regular. Now the people.... amazing, hospitable and fun! I highly recommend everyone to visit and/or buy their products at your local ABC store.

Kennedy M.

Yelp
This was my very first time at a distillery and it was a great experience. They welcome you with a complimentary cocktail before your tour and it is STRONG! The tour was cute, funny and very informational. I am not a bourbon drinker so after two sips I was drunk. But they offer tastings at the end of all of their products, I tapped out way before this part. The staff are nice, funny and know their bourbon. A great cold Saturday adventure.

Yelp
This place is awesome and such a great experience!! From the moment I turned the corner and received a very welcoming greeting by one of the owners, Jonathan, I kind of felt at home. He had a big smile on his face and he introduced himself and asked me my name. He really knows how to get things off on the right foot and make people want to be there. If you are headed to Mystic you should know it's not a tasting room really, it's all about the tour. The first tour starts at 2 PM so realistically there's not much reason to show up much earlier than that, but if you do they have merchandise for sale as well as several beers on tap. You can sign up for the tour in advance on their website, but it's not required. The tour is $10 and there's a few options where you could get a discounted shot glass or rocks glass. There is a five dollar off discount listed on yelp, but they give it to you automatically according to Jonathan which results in the $10 fee. They start you off with a taste of their flagship bourbon liqueur prior to the tour. The tour started at about 2:10 because he said there's always stragglers. In my opinion visitor should be respectful and be on time. The staff is very engaging while you wait for the tour to start. I spoke to Jonathan for about five minutes and learned about his background which was great. The tour is very informative, yet not too overly technical. They will go into the more technical aspects of the process if you want to know more. It's a very interactive tour where they ask you questions just to learn your basic knowledge of bourbon. They also provide ample time to ask any questions you may have. The tour consists of engaging your senses like taste and smell of the base elements of the production process. They have very much embraced solar power. They stated that they are the largest solar powered distillery in the world. I thought that was pretty cool. There are several tastings throughout the tour including their bourbon and what is called the Soul of Mystic. There's also an opportunity to taste their gin at the end of the tour back in the main room. Our tour was primarily conducted by Jonathan, but the other members of the staff are very friendly and engaging as well. I spoke with Brian for a couple minutes and interacted with Liz. They really have a great family type of staff there. They have all sorts of merchandise. Obviously you can buy any of their liquor products as well as shot glasses, rock glasses, T-shirts. They even have a cookbook and they sell used barrel staves. Everyone should definitely check this place out.

Yelp
This is just in regards to the hand sanitizer operation and not about their distillery. It's great that they're making hand sanitizer. And actually, we really like their liquid hand sanitizer - we've bought it a few times and they had great safety measures with gloves, mask, and drive up pickup. On the most recent purchase, their protocol is a little different. There is no more drive up area to pick up. Rather, you park and have to go inside. We were really disappointed to find that NONE of the employees were wearing masks. When we walked in and the lady asked for our order number, she came up to me maskless, no social distancing. Good hand sanitizer, but sadly, we won't be back due to poor safety measures.

Yelp
Fantastic distillery, unexpectedly tasty bourbon, amazing staff. Great tour of the distillery and the spirit making process, complete with tastings along the way. Love the venue as well, makes for a nice afternoon out with the family, plenty of indoor and outdoor seating options for enjoying drinks and snacks... and there are goats! Recommend tasting all the bourbons and gins.

Yelp
I gifted my boyfriend the Single Barrel Experience at Mystic for his birthday, and we had the best time! The Single Barrel Experience is an amazing day packed with the hands on start to finish process of whiskey making, tastings, whiskey university, and a delicious lunch with the distillery staff. The experience also included all our drinks throughout the day, including liquor, cocktails, beer, soda, water, anything we wanted. We didn't know exactly what we were getting ourselves into, but we could not have asked for a better day. Bryan, one of the distillers, walked us through the hands on process. We were the ones that got to push the buttons and switch the switches. We got to help physically move the grain, mash, and eventual whiskey through the distilling equipment into a barrel. As part of it, we got to decide what inscription we wanted laser etched into our barrel. Bryan was an amazing guide throughout the day. He's incredibly knowledgeable and all around friendly host. We also had the chance to take part in the Whiskey University program with Blitz, one of the distillery's owners. This program teaches you the really interesting combination of the science and history behind whiskey and the whiskey making process, and obviously includes a few tastings. We learned so much and Blitz was a great teacher! However, I think the best parts of the day happened between what was officially included in the Single Barrel Experience. We felt so taken care of by the team at Mystic. We left feeling like we were truly a part of the Mystic family. We will definitely be spending as much time as we can at Mystic in the future!

Susana M.

Yelp
This was such an amazing experience! I went on a tour with friends. The people, the location, the goats, the bourbon, the maple syrup, it was all wonderful. Staff were all incredibly kind, helpful, and welcoming. It felt like we were all old friends.

Jerry M.

Yelp
Mystic had a comedy night. $10 fee. Advertised tour of facilities, tasting, and food truck. None of this happened. Also restrooms without paper and totally XXX comedy (mostly raw sex jokes, which is up to each person's taste but the only people laughing were drinking). The jokes were terrible and people talking to each other while they were telling what they called jokes. We tried to call and ask about the event but no one answers the phone.
google avatar

Yelp
If you ever sat around sipping a fine bottle of bourbon and wondered 'how is this made', I HIGHLY recommend you driving out to Mystic Farms. They have a tour that takes you from corn delivery to the barrel process. In between you get to sample the soul and the heart of the pure alcohol prior to barreling that really brings it home how much effort goes in to making bourbon. The owner is one of the nicest guys I have met on any distiller tour and he will happily answer any question no matter how weird or 'out there'. The tastings and tour are $10 and include a shot glass. The bourbon Mystic is a nice smooth peppery nice throated whiskey....that I just had to buy. The employees were the best combo of goofy funny and knowledgeable. This is a definite stop for a saturday afternoon!

Nancy O.

Yelp
Visiting from AZ. Came out of my way to buy some of their bourbon liqueur. No one here @ 10:30 on a Wednesday. Really really wanted some of this stuff for myself and gifts. I'm leaving with nothing. Wasted over an hour getting here.
google avatar

Carla Gene R.

Yelp
These guys are making hand sanitizer to address the shortage due to COVID-19. They were amazingly helpful answering questions and making arrangements. Their product is exactly as designed, a wonderful liquid substitute for "old" gel hand sanitizer. I'll definitely recommend their sanitizer to everybody and anybody. And I'll check them out another time for their drinking alcohol

Yelp
Great place to spend an afternoon or evening. Beautiful surroundings and kind knowledgeable staff. I had fun while learning chemistry and history.
google avatar

Jonathan L.

Yelp
This was an awesome experience, upon arrival we were greeted with welcoming faces; and a half shot of bourbon liqueur. The tour started on time, and even with a full house our tour guide was full of jokes; and a vast knowledge of their products. Every step of the way our group was hit with wave after wave of knowledge on how this distillery crafts their spirits, and how they are among some of if not the best bourbon distillers on the market. Form seasoned drinkers with a refined pallet, to novice drinks alike this tour will satisfy the lot. I would definitely recommend this to anyone.

Yelp
I love supporting local businesses. You know your dollars are staying within the community. Mystic Farm and Distillery is such a place. The two men who founded this company specialize in craft Bourbon and other spirits. They've taken pains in producing high quality products. Every time I check with them they're developing a new brew and their efforts in growing their own ingredients is commendable. Their facility is top notch. The tours are educational and I really appreciate the samples.

Holley N.

Yelp
We had been fans of Mystic's bourbon for a while, and recently used their place as a venue for my husband's birthday party. We looked at several different options, but immediately loved the causal, charming vibe at Mystic. We could not have been happier. Jonathon was great to work with on the initial logistics, and was quick to respond with any questions we had. He was also really flexible and offered a few different ideas to consider before sending us a contract we both felt good about. Lisa and Bryan were wonderful to work with as we neared the date. Lisa asked the right questions about our event to get a sense of what the flow should be and how things should be set up. We had food, a little area for dancing and a fire pit outside. Our guests loved tasting their spirits and enjoyed the other bar offerings as well. Bryan offered a tour for anyone interested, and was a fun, knowledgeable guide who is clearly passionate about his work. It was absolutely worth the cost to locate our party at Mystic. The bar, service, music, and lighting were just right - allowing us to just enjoy time with friends. I will absolutely work with them again, and will take family up to the farm for a tour.

Yelp
Very cool farm with super friendly staff. Tucked away off the beaten path, but this distillery is definitely worth a visit!

Yelp
Awesome people awesome time great bourbon. So glad to have this experience available in the Triangle.

Yelp
Took the tour with my wife and father in law and have to say completely worth the price. Our tour guide was awesome. Lots of details both verbally and the drinking taster type. The spirits they have developed are amazing and the staff was just as good. I will be back for evening cocktails!

Yelp
Randomly came across this working distillery and farm on a Saturday. The tours are informative and fun and the bourbon and gin is excellent. I learned more from this tour than the Makers Mark one in KY!

Anitra B.

Yelp
The converted me years ago!!!! Once a devout white sipper, I first learned about Mystic Bourbon at a local business open house, I have been hooked since. I often give as gifts, and have been a faithful customer since. The NC ABC commission needs to step its game up because all of its locations across the state are not carrying the product as the should!!!! No worries because the Distillery is here!!! I had amazing time today touring and look forward to many more visits and bringing others with me!! Visit!!! Sip!!!! Bring a friend and sip more!!!!
