Mystic Pizza to Become a Musical With Songs by Melissa Etheridge | Eater

"Best known from a 1988 romantic comedy that follows the romantic entanglements of three servers at a small Connecticut pizzeria and helped launch Julia Roberts’s career, this locale is culturally notable for evoking the feel of a small resort town — a quality highlighted by Roger Ebert — and for showcasing early performances by Vincent D’Onofrio, Lili Taylor, and Matt Damon. The film is now being adapted into a stage musical by Broadway veterans with singer-songwriter Melissa Etheridge providing new music; the creative team includes writer Sas Goldberg and director Gordon Greenberg, and Concord Theatricals will handle publishing and licensing, though production dates and venues have not been announced. Observers caution that movie-to-musical transfers can be tricky, but successes like Waitress offer a cautiously optimistic precedent." - Greg Morabito

Mystic Pizza – Groton, Connecticut - Gastro Obscura

"Mystic, Connecticut was a relatively sleepy New England town until Hollywood’s attention turned to their local pizza shop, Mystic Pizza. Opened in 1973 by the Zelepos family, the corner pizza joint enjoyed decades of success in their titular town thanks to their “secret sauce.” However, business exploded after screenwriter Amy Jones, who had spent the summer in Mystic, used the restaurant as the setting for her latest screenplay. The resulting film, Mystic Pizza, was released in 1988 and not only shared a title with the Zelepos’ business, but also told the story of three fictional women working at the restaurant. The coming-of-age story received critical acclaim and gathered enough attention that the original Mystic Pizza soon had to deal with lines around the block. The movie proved so successful for the restaurant that they were not only able to open a second location, but Mystic Pizza also now sells frozen pizzas in grocery stores around America. Fans of the film still flock to the restaurant to take pictures at the backdrop of one their favorite romantic comedies. Not bad for a local pizzeria that simply happened to catch a writer’s eye. Ranking Chef Movies Based on the Food

"I only see Leona’s Mystic Pizza in a bit part of the film, but it looks absolutely delicious: a nicely risen crust, well-distributed red sauce, and a generous but not overwhelming amount of cheese, and everyone in the movie keeps talking about how good it is." - Nikita Richardson

Came here with babers and his friends after a weekend in CT. Cozy restaurant. Staff and service were very nice and quick. Food was top notch. Never seen this movie though. I heard it was a hit in the 80s. I love a good pop culture sight. Soda was so crispy, craving some right now. 5 stars all around!

A truly iconic and wonderful experience. The atmosphere is warm, nostalgic, and full of charm, making it special from the moment you walk in. The pizza is delicious with fresh ingredients, great flavor, and a perfectly baked crust that hits the spot every time. What really stands out is the overall experience—friendly service, a welcoming vibe, and the sense that you’re enjoying a piece of local history. Whether you’re visiting Mystic for the first time or coming back again, Mystic Pizza is a must-stop. Highly recommended for great food and an unforgettable, classic Mystic experience. 🍕

Forever living in the 80s. They have that theme restaurant vibe. There is plenty to look at around the restaurant. A lot of movie memorabilia. The decor is, well, Julia Robert’s everywhere. But I couldn’t find a Pretty Lady reference. ;) They even have the movie playing on a tv screen above the dining room. I sat there and wondered what the restaurant would look like if it hadn’t been influenced by the movie and would they ever consider modernizing the joint, separating themselves from the movie since at this point it is very old and millennials and certainly Gen Zers don’t know of it. But I digress. The pizza is good, not excellent. I’m biased because I’m from NYC and my preferred style is different but that being said I like how they do it. The thick crust pan style. Lots of cheese and toppings, lots of sauce. This place is a must visit when in Mystic. Back to the pizza, We went with the eggplant and meat pie and also a margarita pie. They did not disappoint. The cheesey garlic bread was a worthwhile mention. I hear the clam chowder is a 8 out of 10 The waitstaff was very friendly. She offered and brought soda refills and was otherwise very attentive. We sat at a booth table in the main finish area. Somewhat tight for 3 grown adults per side we still managed comfortably. It was a large meal so we took a few slices in a box to go. Very convenient.

I visited this place after reading reviews and the place is really worth visiting when you visit Mystic, we tried the pizza and Calzone and it was amazing. Fresh food , fresh ingredients and full of flavors. Their Marinara sauce is special and i wonder if they sell that seperatly. I am going again to try their pasta spefials today. I would highly recommend this place if you are in Mustic CT.

Visiting Mystic Pizza was such a delightful surprise! Growing up watching the movie, I never imagined I’d actually get to stop at the real place. On our trip, we were just driving by, saw the sign at the exit, and decided to stop—and I’m so glad we did. The food exceeded all expectations—absolutely amazing, fresh, and delicious. But what really made the experience special was the staff. Our waiter, our waitress, and everyone working there were not only friendly and attentive, but they clearly knew the movie inside and out. Their knowledge and enthusiasm made the visit so much fun and added an extra layer of nostalgia for fans. If you love the movie—or just love great food and a fun atmosphere—Mystic Pizza is an absolute must-visit. It was a perfect day!

Great gluten free dough and regular dough!! We stopped in around 6pm and were quickly seated upstairs. The atmosphere was very pizza shop—-large wooden tables, Mystic Pizza playing on the TV and photos of the movie and celebrities. We ordered the garden salad. It was plenty big enough to split for 2-3 people. We each got the small pizza in pepperoni. The gluten free crust was tasty, it had a nice buttery flavor and good texture. The regular pizza I asked for it to be well done so that it had crispy pepperoni, which it did. It was oozing with cheese, but wasn’t super heavy and a perfect amount of sauce with a nice flavor. We each had a glass of wine, which was priced from $8-10 each. The server was really friendly and stopped by several times to check on us. Overall a lovely experience! We would definitely return.

The movie “Mystic Pizza,” gave this Pizzeria a lot of fame. Unfortunately the prices reflect that the place is for tourist$. Pizza was good, and their beer own was excellent. Service was very, very attentive and the staff is probably the best part of the experience. Lots of fun movie and celebrity stuff hanging on the walls.

Travelling to 10 states in 14 days we diverted to Mystic because of the movie Mystic Pizza but mostly because of the movie Mystic Christmas which showed Mystic off in a great light. We weren’t disappointed on a beautifully sunny day… great Main Street with interesting shops, the pizza, the bascule bridge, the river, the houses and at that time of year the Halloween decorations. Bliss 🥰
