Mystic Pizza to Become a Musical With Songs by Melissa Etheridge | Eater

"Best known from a 1988 romantic comedy that follows the romantic entanglements of three servers at a small Connecticut pizzeria and helped launch Julia Roberts’s career, this locale is culturally notable for evoking the feel of a small resort town — a quality highlighted by Roger Ebert — and for showcasing early performances by Vincent D’Onofrio, Lili Taylor, and Matt Damon. The film is now being adapted into a stage musical by Broadway veterans with singer-songwriter Melissa Etheridge providing new music; the creative team includes writer Sas Goldberg and director Gordon Greenberg, and Concord Theatricals will handle publishing and licensing, though production dates and venues have not been announced. Observers caution that movie-to-musical transfers can be tricky, but successes like Waitress offer a cautiously optimistic precedent." - Greg Morabito

Mystic Pizza – Groton, Connecticut - Gastro Obscura

"Mystic, Connecticut was a relatively sleepy New England town until Hollywood’s attention turned to their local pizza shop, Mystic Pizza. Opened in 1973 by the Zelepos family, the corner pizza joint enjoyed decades of success in their titular town thanks to their “secret sauce.” However, business exploded after screenwriter Amy Jones, who had spent the summer in Mystic, used the restaurant as the setting for her latest screenplay. The resulting film, Mystic Pizza, was released in 1988 and not only shared a title with the Zelepos’ business, but also told the story of three fictional women working at the restaurant. The coming-of-age story received critical acclaim and gathered enough attention that the original Mystic Pizza soon had to deal with lines around the block. The movie proved so successful for the restaurant that they were not only able to open a second location, but Mystic Pizza also now sells frozen pizzas in grocery stores around America. Fans of the film still flock to the restaurant to take pictures at the backdrop of one their favorite romantic comedies. Not bad for a local pizzeria that simply happened to catch a writer’s eye. We were driving from Boston to New Haven, and made a detour to eat at Mystic Pizza. We found it worth the trip. We did not try their new cocktails, but they sounded interesting (included a photo of the cocktail menu). The fried artichoke appetizer was delicious (esp with the dipping sauce), and the portion was generous. We also had a BBQ chicken and a cheese pizza (the kids' fave). I have never had a BBQ chicken pizza that also has red sauce on it, but it was quite good. Pizzas are a little small for the price, but we enjoyed them. Service was friendly but slow (but I get it as it was a Saturday evening), and it was a nice atmosphere. I would definitely return if in the area again.

Stopped here during a 2025 road trip from Philadelphia — of course, I had to check out Mystic Pizza, made famous by the Julia Roberts movie of the same name. It’s a bit of a nostalgic stop if you’re into classic films or pop culture spots. The pizza itself? Not bad at all. I appreciated how the cheese had a bit of a crispy crust — a nice touch that added some texture. The slices weren’t your traditional size or shape, but they had character. Flavor-wise, it was solid, nothing mind-blowing, but definitely enjoyable for what it is: a laid-back, small-town pizza joint with a big screen legacy. Worth it for the experience and the bragging rights. If you’re a movie buff or just curious, give it a try.

Very fun atmosphere and with a good selection of pizza and sides. We didn’t have to wait long for a late lunch and got seated within minutes. The pizza is on the thicker side but the crust was still crispy and had a crunch to it. It was fluffy and so easy to eat. Loved the moussaka pizza! Would definitely recommend dropping by if you’re in town.

By the slice - cheese, pepperoni, and daily option ( California something ?) You can order pies too Cali slice was very good. Texture and droppings were spot on. Crust was good. cheese was not as good as the cali. Crust gave beach or school pizza. But was tolerable. I liked the crust Slices were small. The shop was decorated around the Mystic Pizza movie with Julia Robert’s which was cute. This was only shop I was able to find a mystic magnet for a souvenir.

It was everything we anticipated! Everyone was super friendly. We LOVED our server, Juan! He had such a good positive attitude. They literally have the movie "Mystic Pizza" playing all day long. We really enjoyed the food, our pizza crust was crispy and the cheese perfectly toasty! We would totally eat here again if we are ever back in the area. As a travel agent I will absolutely encourage my clients to stop by if they are in the area.

We decided to visit Mystic for the weekend. The question of where to eat was not an issue. I have long seen Mystic pizza on the lists of the best pizzerias in the country. We ordered a basic pizza with mushrooms and artichokes. We liked the pizza. Cozy and calm atmosphere, . The service was good. The waitress was polite and helpful. There were few people, soft music from the 70-80s was playing

Curious about the food from watching the movie years ago. The food was not good. The Moussaka pizza wasn’t bad at all. The crust was crispy, the put on a skillet that had air pockets so it kept the bottom of the pizza crispy. Staff was very nice. A bit pricey but it’s now a movie landmark so they play on that. The decor is charming and nostalgic.

Would definitely recommend. Pizza and fries were awesome. Great atmosphere, service was great, love the nostalgia, music was playing but low so you could hear each other talking and not have to speak loudly! Will definitely be going back!!!
