LA’s New Falafel Stand Is a One-Man Masterpiece That Hails From Iraq | Eater LA

"In Detroit he used $50,000 borrowed from his brother to build a brick-oven bakery that produced Iraqi samoon breads; an oven-build disaster initially wiped out those funds and was a very sad setback, but he eventually turned the business around and made Naba Brick Oven Bakery a formidable name in Detroit’s competitive market before leaving for Southern California in 2017." - Farley Elliott

I sent my son who doesn’t speaks Arabic, the cashier the short guy rude as hell, so when my son brought the order I checked after him I opened the ka’ak bag. There’s was a bug inside the bag. my boy took the bag back and they saw the bug, instead they were mad at my boy for their mess. The health department need to visit this place ASAP.

I am from Los Angeles and stumbled into a video about this place before my trip to Detroit last week (Sep 23 thru 27). Of course I had to check it out. It did not disappoint. That falafel sandwich was SO good! The falafel itself was soft and green on the inside, perfectly crunchy on the outside. (The cook was nice enough to give me a piece of falafel ahead of time to appreciate what I was getting myself into). The sandwich also had roasted eggplant which was perfectly done, lightly fried cauliflower, French fries, a simple cucumber tomato and lettuce topping with a splash of sauce that was bbq-like that added even more flavor. I’m ready to call it the best sandwich in the entire state of Michigan. We need something like this back in LA. It would be a hit. I highly recommend that sandwich. I also recommend you buy some bread on the way out. Side note: cards are accepted here (including tap) but be mindful that you may not get a receipt (because mom and pop).

Google
I genuinely wish there was a way to give this place less than 1 star. I’ve had a horrible experience every time I’ve been there. Their only redeeming quality is that their falafel is half decent. Otherwise, you would never catch within 50 feet of this place.

This place has the best Iraqi Falafil, and mix falafel sandwich, the also got the best Iraqi cookie (KAAK), the have gone through few owners, recently the remodel the place looks much better, the place manly for carry out.

Google
No menu and little English spoken, so I just asked the man to make me what he would make himself. Ended up with a falafel sandwich with roasted/fried veggies, lettuce, tomato, onion, herbs, and an amazing amba sauce. One of the better sandwiches I've had.....for $5. UNBELIEVABLE value and quality!!!

Google
The best thing about this place is their amazing Iraqi bread, called samoon. They sell it 3 for $1 and its simply the lightest fluffiest diamond-shaped bread you could ask for. Sandwiches where you can add falafel, roast eggplant, and french fries are only $3 and plenty filling. Amba is the delicious spicy pickled mango sauce they put on top that I can't recommend enough. Staff here were nice and happy to explain what anything was to me. Now onto the nuanced part of the review. There's only one small table and one small barstool seating area here, a total of 5 chairs int he entire place, so this is first and foremost just a to-go stop. Unfortunately the front end wasn't very clean and could have used a wipedown or two (the kitchen and serving area looked spotless though). Parking is also somewhat difficult. Only the street parking in front of the shop is available and unfortunately, it's surrounded by rubble buildings on both sides, with a very narrow dirt path in the back that I wouldn't recommend any non 4x4 vehicle to attempt.

Google
Typically I am not a falafel person but Naba bakery falafel is the real deal. It's so good that had it every single day this trip. One of my favorite authentic Iraqi places for sure. Their kubba is good too, I haven't had a chance to try more of their menu items but I'm sure I won't be disappointed. Plus, service is quick 😊 and the staff is very polite and nice. Highly recommended.

Google
my extreme dissatisfaction with my recent experience at your restaurant . The service was exceptionally poor, with staff displaying a lack of attentiveness and professionalism. Furthermore, the overall cleanliness of the establishment was unacceptable, raising serious concerns about hygiene standards. I hope you will take these issues seriously and implement necessary improvements.

Yelp
Dropped by Dearborn to get the Iraqi version of falafel sandwich. This thing is packed with fried cauliflower, eggplant, fries, lettuce and tomato as well as a generous amount of mango hot sauce. Definitely my favorite falafel sandwich. As far as the rest of the bakery is concerned it was okay, but there wasn't a large variety of items on display nor was it pleasing to the eyes to put it nicely. Still the food is where it's at

Yelp
The tomatoes smelled weird and I got bad diarrhea after eating this sandwich. Not sure if its unsanitary or just the ingredients used aren't fresh, but best to avoid it. Also the sandwich itself is really bad and overrated. Really weird combination of flavors. The mango hot sauce was too bitter. The veggies looked stale and unsavory and the bread was tough and just bad.

Yelp
My mom, across the country in Seattle, sends me a recommendation to this bakery 40 minutes away from my place. I have no idea where she got this recommendation, but I have an errand in Dearborn so I decide to check it out. I drive into one of the most garbage-laden neighborhoods that I have seen in the continental US, and walk into a Middle Eastern bakery with no menu and no English-speaking Staff. It appears that they make one thing, and one thing only: a sandwich with samoon, an Iraqi flatbread. After waiting an inexplicable 20 minutes in a short line when all of the ingredients were already prepared, I was handed a sandwich densely packed with falafel, roasted eggplant, roasted cauliflower, and French fries. This thing was dense, like a block of wood. I did have a few nits to pick. I wished there were more fresh ingredients; even though all of the ingredients were vegetarian, they were all dense, starchy, and heavy. The only fresh ingredients was a meager amount of tomato and lettuce placed over the other toppings. The sauce, described as "spicy mango" by another Yelper, would be more accurately described as "sour and salty turmeric". My hands were stained yellow when all was said and done. All in all, it's hard to argue against a $3.50 sandwich, but it wasn't exactly my cup of tea. If you want a dense, cheap, filling vegetarian sandwich, this is the spot for you. If you want to avoid maskless employees loudly yelling as they make your sandwich in the middle of a pandemic in a sketchy part of town, then you may want to look elsewhere.

Yelp
We stopped here after seeing this on No Passport Required. The falafel sandwich with fries, eggplant, falafel, lettuce, tomato, and amba (spicy mango sauce) was really good ($5). They also had a delicious "meat bread" that was a dough mixed with meat and vegetables($1). Come for those things because they don't make anything else. You can buy containers of the amba ($2) and they had a small selection of canned, packaged, and refrigerated food. Watching the guy making samoon in the brick oven was a bonus show. The people who worked here were nice and welcoming to us non-locals. Most of their business seems to be carry out but they do have one table for people who eat there.

Yelp
Saw them on a tv show and decided to try it. The location is easy to get to and the bakery staff are very friendly. It's mostly an "in & out" type place because there isn't much seating. The falafel was great and the sauce was uniquely different compared to most middle eastern restaurants. The ingredients are fresh and well prepared with the right seasonings. The price is hard to beat because I spent $6 for a falafel, fries & a small bakery sweet. Great authenticity and well presented falafel sandwich.

Yelp
Like many who have posted here I also saw this on No Passport Required. My second trip here and this place is amazing. Yesterday the man who waited on me asked if "I wanted everything" to which I replied yes. Then he gave me a choice of 3 sauces. I asked for loads of mango sauce and he smiled. Cost $3. An absolute bargain.
