Where to Feast on Palestinian Food in New York | Eater NY

"Owned by Abu Mohammed and named after a city in the West Bank north of Jerusalem, Nablus Sweets was founded in Paterson, New Jersey, in 1991. It was followed 10 years later by a Bay Ridge branch. Both specialize in knafeh, a giant orange sheet pastry of shredded wheat and melted cheese invented in Nablus, which exists in several variations, sold by the square or entire pastry. Many other Middle Eastern cookies and pastries are available here, including burma, basboosa, and baklawa." - Robert Sietsema

We drove from Philly to check out the Great Falls and stopped by for their famous kanafa. The folks were incredibly welcoming and pretty much gave us a tour of their desserts, gave great recommendations, and was so patient with us even with the long line. I can’t tell you the names of all the desserts we got, but anything that’s creamy and cheesy was delicious. There was also a dessert that I think had black cumin seeds—incredibly savory and sweet. Never had anything that tasted like that before! Go to the Falls! Go to Nablus Sweets! And order enough so that you can eat it in the car and for the week 😁 Also make sure you stop by the other businesses on Palestine Way—amazing food is everywhere.

If you have a sweet tooth, Nublus Sweet is a pastry shop you absolutely must visit! The variety of pastries and sweets is impressive, and everything is freshly made, exceeding all taste expectations. Each bite is a delightful temptation, making it hard to stop at just one. The small seating area is perfect for enjoying your treats on the spot. I’ll definitely be considering Nublus Sweet for my future orders during the holidays and festivities. A truly sweet experience!

Great spot with delicious food and generous portions. The menu has plenty of options, and everything tastes fresh. Service is friendly and efficient, and the atmosphere is welcoming. Prices are fair for the quality. Definitely worth coming back and recommending to friends and family.

I absolutely loved this place, the assortment of middle eastern desserts is amazing.

Google
Lovely bakery, a wide assortment of Palestinian sweets to choose from. The inside area is also quite nice. The staff are also really friendly and willing to help with any inquiries you may have.

First time here. It was delicious. The Knafah was my favorite. Service was good.

I've loved Nablus for years and still do, but the "pistachios" are getting tiring. Real pistachio are not that expensive. Either give real pistachios or dont say whatever you have are pistachio. This is actually ridiculous and embarrassing.

Google
One of the best experiences I’ve ever had! Laith was incredibly helpful, warm, and knowledgeable. As we picked out an assortment of treats for my coworker, he took the time to explain each one, sharing insights about their flavors and cultural significance. What started as a quick stop to grab a few random sweets turned into a meaningful and fun learning experience. Laith made the whole process enjoyable and memorable. And of course—everything was absolutely delicious! Highly recommend visiting; you’ll leave with both a full bag and a full heart.

Yelp
Let me start by saying that I generally do not like desserts that are very sweet, so take this review with a grain of salt (sugar?). Middle Eastern desserts, including the ones here, use a lot of syrup, giving me too much of a sugar rush that I feel a little sick after consuming even one or two items. This pastry shop has a large selection if you don't mind (or even embrace!) the sugar rush: baklava, kanafeh, basbousa, Turkish delight, and many desserts that I don't even know the names of. My favorite is probably the kanafeh, although the kataifi dough could be more crispy (1 star off). The basbousa was more creamy pudding than semolina cake, so I wasn't that into the texture (1 star off). The area around the shop is somewhat shady. I only stopped by for five minutes to grab a few items, but there were few men loitering outside. I wouldn't be surprised if my car gets broken into if I stayed longer. Nablus is a good shop with a large variety of Middle Eastern desserts, but I just don't think it is my cup of tea (dessert?).

Yelp
If you're craving sweets, then Nablus is your spot. Their goodies are baked daily. We got couple orders of Kunafa.( crunchy buttery dessert from shredded pastry layers and creamy soft milk pudding). I took one bite and that was enough for me. The kunafa were delicious though. All the goodies were nicely displayed and they had plenty of varieties of items. I also grabbed a piece of bakhlava which had pista pasted on it. Can't remember what was the actual name of the dessert. The ambiance is nice and chill. I saw stairs at one corner, so am assuming they have an upstairs sit down area also. Parking can be a hassle as the shop is located on the Main Street. U can find parking in the neighborhoods adjacent

Yelp
Looking at the Google reviews I dropped in Nablus sweets .. shop was kinda empty when I went and I didn't know where to order because there were some people on the left line and some on the right . Service was pathetic ! I went right side to order and I was asked to wait . The lady was really grumpy ! As if I know the names of all sweets , she also didn't want to help. Then a group of people come in , starts talking in Arabic and the lady starts helping them !!!! Not knowing Arabic and we feel treated different !!!! I asked the lady what the name of sweet in the pan is - and she starts complaining to her co-assistant in Arabic that I didn't know the name and keeps shaking her head ! How would I know ?? Then another lady told its khunafa and asked to pack that . I would have given 5/5 if not for the service and treatment in the store.. Sweets were really good z baklava was awesome . Khunafa was good too .. was a bit expensive though. Spent about 40$ for a pound of mix sweets and khunafa . Will probably not go this place again just because of the service ! Average experience overall ..

Yelp
Ever since my husband moved from Michigan, we've been woefully lacking in good Middle Eastern food. By chance, I realized that there was a whole strip of restaurants in Paterson, so I suggested we stop by after running errands in Paramus. I miss kunafa so much, all the time. I stepped into Nablus to pick up some kunafa and also some other sweets. They were so nice and helpful here. I even got a free date cookie! The kunafa was fantastic and almost as good as the ones we used to get at Shatila's in Dearborn. I am definitely coming back.

Yelp
We got the knafe and rice putting and one nut Mamoul. I think this is the best knafe I've had so far in New York and New Jersey area. I didn't really like the rice pudding, everyone make it different and I perfer rose water rice pudding, this one tasted very vanilla. As far as the mamoul, it was the best I've had, I liked how thin the nuts were crushed and blended. Very good service, it was fast. The restaurant was very clean and big, there is also a prayer area upstairs which is nice. I love this place and will forever drive from New York City to Patterson for their knafe and sweets.

Yelp
A well deserved 5 stars for this place. We walked by this place after having dinner and it was packed. We decided to try it and ordered a bunch of stuff. I have no idea the names but I can say that no matter what you order you won't be disappointed. Everything tasted AMAZING! I'm totally coming back! And the staff was so kind.

Yelp
Ordered: Knafeh Khishneh slice (~$5): crunchy pieces of shredded phyllo Knafeh Na'meh slice (~$5): smooth top with ground semolina dough Aya's take: My absolute favorite Middle Eastern dessert! This dessert is filled with soft, sweet cheeses and soaked into a sugary syrup (typically orange blossom water or rose water), then topped with pistachios. Both were delicious and fresh; I actually usually prefer the Knafeh Na'meh (aka the smooth top one) but their Knafeh Kishneh (aka crunchy top) is so much better! My only complaint is my slices were completely different sizes and I would prefer the option to have both square slices. Otherwise, Nablus will not disappoint.

Yelp
Best baklava ever! I preorder for big parties. Never disappointed. It's fresh and delicious

Yelp
Not quite Nablus level knafa but it's still pretty darn tasty. Go while it's busy and catch a tray fresh out of the oven for the best experience.
google avatar

Semina B.

Yelp
If you have a major sweet tooth, Nablus is the place to satisfy it. The desserts are baked fresh daily and they offer lots of variety. Parking is a bit of a hassle as it is located on a major street.

Yelp
Perfect desserts. Nice Variety. Clean. I recommend this place. During Ramadan there is a larger variety of cookies.

Yelp
I always have to stop at this bakery at least twice every time I'm in Jersey. In love with their sweets and this means a lot because I'm picky! Freshly made Middle Eastern ma'moul to basboosa to baklawa. The ma'moul tastes just as fresh even after two weeks of purchasing it (I didn't finish it in one sitting only because I didn't want to gain 20lbs in one day but if it wasn't for that they would've disappeared. They do an amazing job! Prices? Very reasonable for the amount and quality of sweets that you buy. I don't recommend stopping late at night for the chinefa/knafeh because it won't really taste fresh since it's most likely done much earlier. Customer service? Best customer service by the woman that wears the hijab(scarf)...I believe her name is Sameera. Make sure she's the one to attend you because she's so kind, helpful, and sweet mashaAllah. One other woman attended me but she had an attitude. This is a bakery you MUST try! Let me know how you like it.

Yelp
FOOD - the sweets are so good! I got them at night around dinner time and it didn't taste super fresh but still tasty. I had the Kanafe (delicious ooey gooey sweet), a sesame flavor sweet (which was my favorite), something covered in coconut shavings (coconut-y and not too sweet), and a few others that were meh but those three I recommend! SERVICE - chaotic. Not friendly just very businessy. I went and it was busy time (around dinner time on a Saturday). They do work fast for taking orders and packing them up which is great. However when multiple employees are helping multiple customers at the same time is gets chaotic. I wanted to see the name of what I was ordering from the tray behind the long counters but I couldn't because there was another customer standing there putting in his order and then right behind him was the order line. COVID - not good. The tables inside for seating are spaces out from each other but the line to order is right next to them which defeats the purpose of spacing out the diners. The line is squished inside the store and up the stairs, people didn't really distance themselves while waiting in line. Also staff could do a better job of wearing the masks properly, above the nose.

Yelp
This is one of many places in the area serving sweets from around the Middle East but this place is well known for their kunafeh so I stopped here and caught the next bus. The woman here was nice (and surprised I was there.) The kunafeh/kunefe here is ridiculously good and pretty cheap. Nice and hot and stuffed with cheese and not too syrupy sweet. Excellent and easily the best of this style I have had. For people who don't want the more pistachio laden ones and prefer the Middle Eastern variety, I'd go here instead. I'd stop at Antepli otherwise for the Turkish variety though you have to wait as they make theirs to order. The date/pistachio ma'mouls was good as well but nothing can compare to that kunafeh. Good specialty place.

Edward K.

Yelp
After lunch at a nearby restaurant, I grabbed a small tray of desserts for the rest of the day. The woman working the counter was helpful, as they have a large selection of items I hadn't tried. The pistachio baklava was excellent. I had two different types of cookies which were also quite good. Sweet pieces of a thin cake were delicious. My favorite of all was their kunefe in a log shape. It was crispy with an incredibly creamy filling! I'll be back to try more of their selections.

Yelp
I had a disappointing experience at this establishment and feel compelled to share my feedback. The lady working at the counter was extremely unpleasant and lacked basic manners. We placed a sizable order and were provided with a large tray, for which we had to put down a $50 deposit. When I went to pick up the order, I politely asked for two small disposable trays, as I intended to transfer any leftovers from their tray to the disposables and return the store tray as agreed upon. However, the lady refused to provide me with the disposable trays, despite my explanation of the situation. I requested to speak with the manager, but she claimed he was busy, and I didn't want to cause a scene, considering it was an engagement party and time was limited. To add to the frustration, the cash register stopped working, and when the owner or manager finally arrived, I had to argue with him to get just one disposable tray instead of the two I had initially asked for. I was even forced to inquire about nearby dollar stores to purchase additional trays. It was disheartening to spend over $250 on our order and be denied such a simple request, especially when it would have cost them just a couple of dollars. I strongly believe that the lady at the counter is not suited for customer service and should be assigned to other tasks within the establishment. Her lack of manners and unfriendly demeanor made the overall experience deeply unsatisfying. I hope this feedback serves as a valuable suggestion for improvement, as it's crucial for businesses to maintain a courteous and customer-friendly environment to retain loyal patrons.

Yelp
Loveee this place!! Both kinds of kunafa are so good, i can't decide which one I like more. The basbousa is also delicious. Highly recommend this place for some authentic middle eastern sweets.

Jill R.

Yelp
Delicious kunafeh and mahmoul. Tastes just like in the old city in Jerusalem. Staff were friendly and welcoming.
google avatar

Anisa S.

Yelp
My husband and I went on our last day in the area. We walked this long strip and we were so happy when we found this area. Nablus Pastry was delicious! There weren't many tables upstairs because of social distancing but their prices were fair and the baklava was divine! We took 4 trays back to florida with us to share with the family! It was one of the best baklava and knafa fingers we have had in a long time! We can't wait to go back there when we visit again!

Yelp
Best place for hot fresh kanafa and other Middle Eastern sweets in the North East Region.

Yelp
Love it Really Mediterranean desserts Enjoyed everything Prices are very cheap Quality is very nice Staff is so friendly

Noha M.

Yelp
The pastries are great but the nastiest customer service I have experienced. One lady behind the counter is nasty , rude and unhelpful. Shame losing customers due to her inability to just be welcoming and nice.
google avatar

Mohammad A.

Yelp
For many years, this establishment is without competition... many tried and failed. What's "Eid Holidays" without sweets? From Mamoul to Kaek... and of course their legendary "knafeh" ... just look at the photos or visit and sample ...

Yelp
I had a reservation at a restaurant near to this but could not stop without getting inside this place at first as it was full of people and looked very attractive from outside. We parked our car in front of it so could see everything inside so went inside to check it out. They have so many dessert options, including different variety of baklavas, biscuits(I have posted a picture as they have a different name, calling them biscuits because they are shaped like them :D) and Kenafa. They also have mini baklava packs. After dinner, me and husband came here as we have to try something from here because everything looked amazing when we first came here. We asked for their best dessert and the lady gave us a slice of Kenafa and some other things to try as well. She said taste them first and whichever you like the best she will give more of that, she was so kind. Kenafa was really delicious, I ate half of it. The other things that we got were amazing too but kenafa was the winner. We ended up buying more. As we were there, people were coming and ordering kenafa. It is the most popular dessert of theirs. I also noticed that they had tons of kenafa plates, as soon as one finishes, they replace with another one. I would definately come here for Kenafa. If you are near by, this is highly recommended sweets place.

JC D.

Yelp
Come here for every type of Middle Eastern pastry you didn't know existed - and all of those you do know about. Pick a tray size, and get to work pointing out all the delicacies you want. You'll get a free sample and that will only serve to make you want to pick one of the larger trays. Very busy, but despite crowds, the server who helped us with patient, explained what things were, and made recommendations. Many of the desserts have nuts (which I'm not so fond of) or dates (which I love). I basically missed the WHOLE WALL of baklava so don't make my mistake!
google avatar

Mo Y.

Yelp
I tried this place for the first place last night. I love Kenafeh as this is truly my favorite dessert in the whole world. Whine the owner was very nice lady and extremely very friendly, the service was very slow. There was a very long line of people and it mostly her alone helping everyone with a young gentleman who was helping her but had to run to the kitchen at the same time. I had to wait for a long tine for my take away order after they ran out if Kenafeh and I had to wait for the next tray. Then I realized after I left that she did not put enough syrup on my order which is so important. She did not even ask how much do I need. It all has to do with the level of service as she to rush to get to the rest of the customers. They did not have enough staff working and they'd don't have a good system to help customers during rush hours. Overall the Kenafeh was good but it was not the best. I will stick with the other place I visited few days ago during my next visits.
google avatar

Allie C.

Yelp
So good ! You're likely to wait in a line before ordering. Let me tell you...it's well Worth the wait ! Sometimes they run out of the hot kunafe (sweet cheese covered in orange semolina, Pistachios and syrup) because it's the most popular dish, but there many other delicious options to chose from. Check this place out , even if you haven't tried middle eastern sweets before.
google avatar

Laila D.

Yelp
Here, I ate the most delicious knefah I could ever imagine eating, in two warm varieties. And that became my most sumptuous dinner. They were so kind and hospitable. We also ordered a tray of varied baklava and pastries to bring home to share with our family with some tea. I most highly recommend this incredible pastry shop. Thank you so much.
google avatar

Starr M.

Yelp
Not worth the hype. It's good for ppl who are home sick and can't make these things themselves. They need to also hire some extra help because this place gets overwhelmed very quickly.
google avatar

Lena S.

Yelp
Best knafeh you can have in the US. Both nameh and kheshneh. Their halawet el jeben is delicious too so is the warbat.
google avatar

Jay F.

Yelp
Definitely should give this place a try, their desserts are top tier and the owners are so nice and always give me free samples to try.
google avatar

Yahya S.

Yelp
Best Palestinian knafeh in New Jersey, potentially New York too. Yea I said. The baklava is solid here too. But there's nothing else you need to know stop reading this review, go get that knafeh & then come back & upvote this review because I was right & this recommendation changed your life.
google avatar

Nel S.

Yelp
This place is amazing. I got the assorted desserts but that was a mistake.. not that it wasn't good but they had this cheesy dessert which was out of this world. Amazing.. I wish I knew what it was called
google avatar

Rheem A.

Yelp
Loved this bakery. I had the knafeh khishneh with cheese, basbousa (namoura), harissa, hilbeh and the knafeh with custard and warbat. This is probably the best knafeh khishneh I've had outside of Palestine. I only wish I had them heat it so the cheese was a little more gooey. She offered but I declined so not her fault. But regardless of that the cheese was perfectly sweetened and the shi3riyeh on top was really was crunchy and not soggy. My next favorite was the namoura (Palestinian) or basbousa (Egyptian) as they refer to it. Same dessert, just different names in different countries. Its like harissa but thin and less cakey. Next fave was the hilbeh. Basically namoura but with fenugreek seeds. Fenugreek is bitter and its hard to get the flavor out of the seeds without the bitterness creeping in but they nailed it. I didn't taste the warbat but my mom did and she loved it. The staff is super helpful, knowledgeable and patient. Can't wait to return.
google avatar

Heather L.

Yelp
I've heard rumors of how great the knafeh was here but had yet to try it. Lives up to the hype and then some. Gooey cheese, flavorful syrup soaked pastry and a sprinkling of pistachio. I would eat this every day if I could. Will definitely have to return and try some of the other desserts sold here.
google avatar

M J.

Yelp
Always on point and always delicious. Kind of pricy but you get what you pay for. Great quality and portions are decent.
google avatar

Jay M.

Yelp
Three of us had lunch at a nearby restaurant, so instead of coming back later in the day, we made it a point to stop by before leaving the area. The bakery is clean and has an almost cafe-like feel to it. All of the pastries are displayed on the counter behind glass panes, while assorted cookies, macarons, and tortes among other goodies are in a glass bakery case. SWEETS and TREATS: -Palestinian-style Kanafeh ($5/slice): Interesting and tasty! It's kept warm on a heating tray near where the line starts, which I thought was pretty neat. The kanafeh itself is sweet and cheesy, while the firm phyllo topping complimented the soft and creamy base. Nablus' Kanafeh must be popular because there were only 5 slices left at around 2:30pm! -Warbat/Kullaj ($1.50/ea): Flaky and addictive! This was probably my favorite of the two. The flaky layers of phyllo soaked up the perfectly sweet syrup, adding more richness to the already tasty cream filling. A sprinkle of crushed pistachios tops off this decadent pastry. SERVICE: The owner was friendly and accommodating, and she was kind enough to describe the different pastries she offers at her bakery. OVERALL: Both the kanafeh and kullaj were good, but I plan on coming back to try the other pastries, particularly those that are heavy on pistachios.

Yelp
A go to place if in Paterson. Especially for some knafeh!! I got all sorts of treats for my family and they absolutely loved It.

Yehya S.

Yelp
worst place everyday vertigo bad attitude rude staff
google avatar

Maddie P.

Yelp
I had one of the women at the counter choose for me. She was very nice and choose 3 treats for us. I wish I had taken down the names of what she choose because everything was good, especially the treat in the attached photo ( I think it's Basbousa?).
google avatar

Monica K.

Yelp
Very good, not overly sweet desserts! Prices were decent too compared to turkish dessert places. We'll def stop by when we are in the area. Only downside is that they are taking cash then using a spatula to put the desserts in boxes, i wish they would have a better system to do that...i understand washing hands is not always an option when you have only 1 or 2 people working and it's busy but maybe gloves or having a cashier would be better.
google avatar

Mo M.

Yelp
If you looking to have an authentic Kunafa taste, same as what you would get in the middle east, then this place is for you. It will not disappoint. This is a huge 2 floors bakery full of wonderful stuff and the woman served us was incredibly sweet. The Kunafa tasted seriously delicious and authentic! They serve it warm with syrup and pistachios sprinkled over it. I enjoyed every bite of it with out feeling guilty of putting on some 600 calories, smh.
google avatar

Rupin K.

Yelp
One the best assortment of Middle Eastern sweets we've had so far..better than the ones we had in Dubai! Reasonably priced, hygienically packed and served. Wonderful staff
google avatar

Sajida F.

Yelp
I've never had knafeh before and had really high expectations for this place because of all the rave reviews but honestly, I just wasn't all that impressed. I couldn't even finish my slice; perhaps knafeh just isn't for me. Aside from that, the little shop was cute and surprisingly spacious. The portions were generous and the woman at the counter was also really sweet!
google avatar

Asma A.

Yelp
Loved the baklava and the kanaffe here. One of the best I have had in my life. The turkish tea- was 3$- totally worth it. My recommendation is the double pistachio baklava. Would love to go back.
google avatar

Joanna P.

Yelp
Delicious Middle Eastern sweets! My favorite is the Knafeh. Can't find anywhere else thats makes it as good as them!
google avatar

Dias J.

Yelp
This bakery is a gem and has one of the best knafeh we have tasted. The server behind the counter was very friendly and explained to us their best sellers. We got sweets to go as well and he explained how to store them and for how long they would stay fresh for. Parking near the storefront is hard to find but you will be able to find some a few blocks down by the residential area. Credit and debit cards can be used only for purchases more than $10, however there is an ATM machine on site. We will definitely be going back to try some of the other sweets and cookies they have on display.

Kanika G.

Yelp
Very authentic and flavorful! Specially harissa and baklava. People behind the counter are very sweet as well! :)
