The 7 Best Japanese Bakeries In London - London - The Infatuation

"Nagare Bankside makes most other coffee shops look like amateurs having a mess around with a French press. Coffee-lovers pull up chairs at the siphon bar, watching in awe like it’s Mark Rylance doing a bit of Shakespeare, but the Japanese-inspired bakery counter shouldn't be ignored. The bagels (chewy, with a thinner and less crispy crust than an NYC-style bagel) served with a pot of velvety, wakatake matcha cream cheese are the best thing here." - sinead cranna, heidi lauth beasley

The 22 Best Bakeries In London - London - The Infatuation

"For: Japanese-inspired bagels and egg salad rolls Nagare Bankside makes most other coffee shops look like amateurs having a mess around with a French press. Excellent coffee and achingly chic interiors aside, there’s a Japanese-inspired bakery counter that deserves your attention. The best things are the buttery egg salad and nori stuffed into a sweet, cake-like roll, and the chewy matcha bagel. You get a choice of spreads and the wakatake matcha and truffle honey butter are best." - rianne shlebak, sinead cranna, daisy meager, heidi lauth beasley

Nagare Bankside - Review - Southwark - London - The Infatuation

"Nagare Bankside makes most other coffee shops look like amateurs having a mess around with a French press. Coffee-lovers pull up chairs at the siphon bar, earnestly watching the skillful baristas work as if they’re witnessing Mark Rylance doing a bit of Shakespeare. Dried flowers and envelopes embossed like love letters are sold as merch, earth-toned aprons hang just-so on brass pegs, and dark wood tables with sprigs of flowers are kept laptop-free for achingly chic catch-ups and contemplative coffee-sipping. This is what reaching peak coffee shop looks like. Unlike its sister spots in Spitalfields and Soho, this Nagare location has a Japanese-inspired bakery counter, which is excellent and shouldn't be ignored. photo credit: Aleksandra Boruch photo credit: Aleksandra Boruch video credit: Sinéad Cranna video credit: Sinéad Cranna photo credit: Aleksandra Boruch Pause Unmute Food Rundown Egg Salad, Nori, Sea Salt Butter Roll Egg salad isn’t the sexiest sandwich filling. It just isn’t. But at Nagare it gets a reputation reset, feeling particularly decadent stuffed inside a sweet, almost cake-like buttery roll. PlayMute video credit: Sinéad Cranna Matcha Bagel With Wakatake Matcha And Truffle Honey Butter A satisfyingly chewy bagel—know that the crust is thinner and less crisp than a NYC-style bagel—with earthy matcha notes that don’t overpower. There’s a choice of spreads and we like the contrast of truffle honey butter best. photo credit: Aleksandra Boruch L’Ambre Cream Bun We recommend this l’ambre earl grey-infused cream bun to anyone who wants dessert but doesn’t have much of a sweet tooth. The tea does a good job of tempering the sweetness and the bun itself is soft and springy. photo credit: Aleksandra Boruch Pearl 40 Bagel Before you start wondering who Pearl is and how you can congratulate her on turning 40, let us explain. Nagare has a signature ‘Pearl 40’ drink and the same flavours—jasmine pearl tea, vanilla—are used in this substantial bagel along with mochi. It’s a pleasant, fragrant mouthful. But we find the glutinous mochi makes this too heavy. We prefer the non-filled, flavoured bagels. photo credit: Sinéad Cranna" - Sinéad Cranna

London’s New Restaurant Openings

"Nagare is one of the best places to get coffee in London. So it’s welcome news that their latest Bankside location is the biggest to date, with an Asian-inspired bakery and a pour-over bar for siphon coffee. On the menu are bakes like mentaiko mochi butter rolls, bonito butter bagels, and matcha cream-filled buns." - team infatuation

This cosy Japanese cafe, situated near Tate Modern, is definitely a popular spot, as there was already a long queue when we arrived around midday. Sadly, all the bagels were sold out by the time we reached the counter! Nonetheless, we were excited to try their signature Uji daifuku mochi bun, which had a texture similar to bagels, so I was still happy. The bun is topped with red beans and butter, creating a delightful balance of sweetness and saltiness, and it's filled with a matcha paste in the centre that's almost like egg yolk, paired with a chewy mochi. The hojicha latte was a lovely addition to the meal, though not exactly a surprise. Since indoor seating is limited it's definitely worth stopping by early if you want to sample more of their delicious offerings!

Truly exceptional pastries and matcha! In London, matcha lattes can often taste very bland, with milk and added flavours masking the taste of original matcha. Here, the ratio of matcha to milk is good resulting in a balanced drink. Same applies to their hojicha. If you come early you will also get to try the most amazing Japanese baked goods. Our favourite was the salt bread egg salad sandwich.

The coffee is great, and the matcha is amazing. Their signature menu is also really refreshing I tried the Gina Yuzu (if I remember correctly). The café is decorated in a cute, minimal wooden style that gives a cozy vibe. But when I went, it was close to closing time, so there weren’t many pastries left and I didn’t get to try them

Went there at 12pm on a Saturday for the mentaiko bread! Not sure if it’s cold or something, the taste is very fishy… their bread’s texture is quite hard, not really Japanese like 🥲 but the flavour(other than the mentaiko one) is good! I also bought the sesame bagel (also hard to chew) but again, the flavour is lovely with a lot of sesame paste/ganache. If the texture of the bread is softer, everything will be perfect! (Also need to fix the fishy taste of mentaiko, of course)

Stopped by for a cup of Hojicha Latte and one of their signature Uji Daifuku Bun on my way to work the other day. Overall quite satisfied with everything. A cup of hot Hojicha Latte with skimmed milk was simply very comforting in a cold and windy winter morning. The Daifuku Bun was nice as well though a little bit pricey.

Ohhh NAGARE is a Dream. Everything was delicious 10/10 but I wish the salt bread was bit soft. If you get the salt bread have it first while it’s warm otherwise it gets really hard. The service was great definitely recommend Hoji cha warm, earthy and delicious. If you are lucky you’ll get a seat so make sure you are there up and bright.

this place is very, very beautiful, and the staff are so kind! i embarrassingly spilt my matcha latte all over the table… and they were very quick to help clean it up. they even brought me a replacement one, which i was not expecting at all. it was wholly the fault of my clumsiness, and they really didn’t have to do this. lovely customer care!! the food was nice too. though asian sweets are becoming more and more popular nowadays, i think the flavours they offer here are still quite “unique”. i had an egg salad butter roll (with nori inside), and my sister and mum had a coconut pandan bun and a matcha daifuku bun, respectively. they were all nice, not too sweet! we all had matcha lattes too, and i enjoyed them because they didn’t just taste like milk (which unfortunately is how matcha lattes taste in many cafes…). my only qualm is how the counter is laid out. it does look very aesthetically pleasing, but even when the cafe was not extremely full it felt crowded and difficult to browse both food and drinks, as menus were only available once you got up to the cashier. also, since the cutlery was right by the cashier i had to squeeze in front of some people ordering in order to get a fork!! it’s a bit cramped.

Really cool cafe in a modern residentiall area. Buildings look cool and the cafe is super stylish. Lowkey would probs just go for the classic drinks but if you want to try something more interrsting could always try their signature drinks. The pasteries were in my experience really good. Verry fluffy and flavourfull. Recommend!
