The 7 Best Japanese Bakeries In London - London - The Infatuation

"Nagare Bankside makes most other coffee shops look like amateurs having a mess around with a French press. Coffee-lovers pull up chairs at the siphon bar, watching in awe like it’s Mark Rylance doing a bit of Shakespeare, but the Japanese-inspired bakery counter shouldn't be ignored. The bagels (chewy, with a thinner and less crispy crust than an NYC-style bagel) served with a pot of velvety, wakatake matcha cream cheese are the best thing here." - sinead cranna, heidi lauth beasley

The 22 Best Bakeries In London - London - The Infatuation

"For: Japanese-inspired bagels and egg salad rolls Nagare Bankside makes most other coffee shops look like amateurs having a mess around with a French press. Excellent coffee and achingly chic interiors aside, there’s a Japanese-inspired bakery counter that deserves your attention. The best things are the buttery egg salad and nori stuffed into a sweet, cake-like roll, and the chewy matcha bagel. You get a choice of spreads and the wakatake matcha and truffle honey butter are best." - rianne shlebak, sinead cranna, daisy meager, heidi lauth beasley

Nagare Bankside - Review - Southwark - London - The Infatuation

"Nagare Bankside makes most other coffee shops look like amateurs having a mess around with a French press. Coffee-lovers pull up chairs at the siphon bar, earnestly watching the skillful baristas work as if they’re witnessing Mark Rylance doing a bit of Shakespeare. Dried flowers and envelopes embossed like love letters are sold as merch, earth-toned aprons hang just-so on brass pegs, and dark wood tables with sprigs of flowers are kept laptop-free for achingly chic catch-ups and contemplative coffee-sipping. This is what reaching peak coffee shop looks like. Unlike its sister spots in Spitalfields and Soho, this Nagare location has a Japanese-inspired bakery counter, which is excellent and shouldn't be ignored. photo credit: Aleksandra Boruch photo credit: Aleksandra Boruch video credit: Sinéad Cranna video credit: Sinéad Cranna photo credit: Aleksandra Boruch Pause Unmute Food Rundown Egg Salad, Nori, Sea Salt Butter Roll Egg salad isn’t the sexiest sandwich filling. It just isn’t. But at Nagare it gets a reputation reset, feeling particularly decadent stuffed inside a sweet, almost cake-like buttery roll. PlayMute video credit: Sinéad Cranna Matcha Bagel With Wakatake Matcha And Truffle Honey Butter A satisfyingly chewy bagel—know that the crust is thinner and less crisp than a NYC-style bagel—with earthy matcha notes that don’t overpower. There’s a choice of spreads and we like the contrast of truffle honey butter best. photo credit: Aleksandra Boruch L’Ambre Cream Bun We recommend this l’ambre earl grey-infused cream bun to anyone who wants dessert but doesn’t have much of a sweet tooth. The tea does a good job of tempering the sweetness and the bun itself is soft and springy. photo credit: Aleksandra Boruch Pearl 40 Bagel Before you start wondering who Pearl is and how you can congratulate her on turning 40, let us explain. Nagare has a signature ‘Pearl 40’ drink and the same flavours—jasmine pearl tea, vanilla—are used in this substantial bagel along with mochi. It’s a pleasant, fragrant mouthful. But we find the glutinous mochi makes this too heavy. We prefer the non-filled, flavoured bagels. photo credit: Sinéad Cranna" - Sinéad Cranna

London’s New Restaurant Openings

"Nagare is one of the best places to get coffee in London. So it’s welcome news that their latest Bankside location is the biggest to date, with an Asian-inspired bakery and a pour-over bar for siphon coffee. On the menu are bakes like mentaiko mochi butter rolls, bonito butter bagels, and matcha cream-filled buns." - team infatuation

Nagare Bankside – aesthetic, airy, and beautifully brewed. • A minimal Japanese café serving specialty coffee, matcha, and bagels with a twist. • I wanted the filter coffee (sold out 😢), so I went for the americano — bold, smooth, and just strong enough. • My friend had the matcha — creamy, earthy, and unsweetened. Just how we like it. • Sunlight spills through the big windows, and the vibe is calm — a mix of quiet workers and casual catch-ups. • Staff was warm and welcoming. • Already planning a return for the bagels.

Yes, it might be a bit of a wait to get in, but it’s worth visiting. Great filter coffee and delish bagel with pork and aubergine with a nicely spiced green sauce. All sweet bagels were not exactly to my liking, but the one with cream was really good. There are a lot of benches outside, so if lucky with the weather, you’ll find a place to sit.

Every time I come in I have to try something different! The coffee and matcha are great. I already knew that having been to their other locations. I’ve so far tried their egg bread roll and mentaiko mochi roll which are definitely my favouites! The mentaiko roll is heated up and is so soft and slightly chewy. I was so pleasantly surprised! The uji matcha and red bean roll is also really light and subtly sweet. I was too hungry to have it in, so I took it home to have in the evening and it was still delicious. I’ll definitely keep coming back and can’t wait to try their other pastries and drinks.

Dropped by Nagare Bankside a bit late and sadly missed out on their bread selection. 😂 The café itself has a cozy, lively vibe that makes it a nice spot to unwind. Tried the matcha latte and it was perfectly smooth and balanced. Definitely planning a return visit, hopefully earlier, so I can finally try their green tea cake!

☕️ Nagare Bankside, a little slice of Tokyo in London Japanese breads, bagels and croissants that are dangerously addictive. My favourites: mentaiko croissant with mochi, hōjicha pretzel bun, sea salt croissant, and the bacon and apple bagel. Vibes are perfect, staff are lovely, and yes… it is pricey, but worth every bite.

Really lovely cafe with a great variety of food and drink. It’s a cosy place to work or meet up for a bite. The staff were really lovely and helpful. I really enjoyed the Mentaiko mochi bun - it was spicy, different and filling. The matcha latte was definitely one of the best I’ve had in London. I wasn’t the biggest fan of the matcha cream bun (bit tart) or the maple fizz (rather plain). Otherwise, a good experience.

Nagare is my new favourite coffee shop if not the BEST in town. It’s perfect for meet ups and there is ample space for serious laptop work whilst indulging in the most unique and delightful delicacies. The coffee was off the chain and I had the most glutinous chocolate bagel. Thank you for opening up this wonderful branch which is 10 times better than the other ones and has a toilet! Hooray. I will obviously be back again.

We stumbled upon NAGARE by accident after leaving the Tate Modern and the sleek design from the outside drew us in. So glad we did! One of the best coffees we have had in a while (coffee beans from Ethiopia) prepared with care and attention by the baristas. The food also looked amazing, did not order anything but will next time. The decor inside was simple and calm. Recommend!
