The 31 Essential Kolkata Restaurants

"By the late 19th century, Calcutta was home to a sizable community of Baghdadi Jews who came to the thriving city in search of economic opportunities. Among them was Nahoum Israel Mordecai, who opened a confectionery inside the city’s historic Hogg Market (New Market to locals) in 1902. Only a fraction of the Jewish community remains in the city today, but 120 years on, Nahoum’s popularity is intact. Everything hearkens back to another era: antique teak furniture, huge glass display cases, the century-old cash register, and age-old recipes. The shop is best known for its classic macaroons, spicy rum balls, jam tarts, almond pastries, and — surprisingly — Christmas specials like mincemeat pies and rich fruitcakes. There are also other global Jewish specialties like challah and caraway-studded savory cookies called kaka." - Priyadarshini Chatterjee

*Nouham and Sons Review* *Rating: 5/5* I recently visited Nouham and Sons, a hidden gem of a bakery shop! Their treats are absolute perfection. I tried their signature cake, and it was moist, flavorful, and utterly divine. The service was warm and welcoming, making me feel like family. The shop's ambiance is cozy and inviting. *Pros:* - Delicious baked goods - Warm service - Cozy atmosphere *Recommendation:* Must-try for bakery lovers and those seeking sweet treats.

This famous bakery located right inside the New Market area has a large selection of pastries, bakes, cakes and sweets. We had gone there in the evening and the whole market was crowded and full of activities. The staff at Nahoum Confectionery were at the peak of their efficiency, catering to the needs of the customers. It is an interesting shop to visit in Kolkata.

One of Kolkata’s iconic landmarks - established in 1902 Nahoum’s continues to maintain its legacy. The baked items and desserts are equally good. However, menu has shrunk considerably when compared to childhood memories of eating at Nahoum’s.

I don’t understand the management of the place. Writing this comment standing in a line waiting for buns when there are racks of already prepared ones in the shop. O don’t understand when there is a huge line and the racks of prepared ones are for the ones who have ordered is not moving, they can give those and replace with the ones that will come. In the end the buns are the same. To too it all, this guy with specs acting all sarcastic telling us how the buns are prepared. Seriously. Guys, standard your game. Don’t put the name of this place to the dogs.

The food quality was actually amazing! The heart cake was simple yet it amazed me so much. It was soft..fluffy and tasty! We had to wait outside as there was a line to enter the shop! It was Friday at 11 pm, still such a rush! The quality has been maintained! Definitely buy their garlic bread too!

One of the most famous cake shops in Kolkata. This was my first time at Nahoums and honestly it was such a delight. This shop has a variety of cakes and savoury items. I ordered their rum balls ( ₹ 45/ piece ) and it was such an unique amalgamation of flavours. Chocolate and rum ....it was an absolute delight to the taste buds. Would definitely recommend this place.

Although I appreciate the great history it is holding however I see they stopped producing many items. I still love the taste of the bakery items. Very unique.

A hugh spread of cakes, pastries, sweets and some snacks were available. The snacks were below par, not palatable and would not recommend it. The cakes, pastries, tarts were decent and ok. Apologies if I have hurt any die-hard fan/s of Nahoum, but this place did not satisfy my palate. Considering the hype, I found the food items just ok...Not sure if the quality has dropped or it was an off day at Nahoum. Anyways I did not enjoy the snacks and it reflects in my ratings of the place.
