Nakatani

"After a decade working with Hélène Darroze, Shinsuke Nakatani is at the helm of this elegant, restful restaurant, decked in soothing colours and natural materials. Thanks to his acute flair for seasoning, cooking and presentation, this ultra-talented Japanese chef concocts a pedigree French score in tune with the seasons, in which the flavours and textures are seamlessly combined to create a consistent whole. Guests can savour a single set menu (4 dishes at lunchtime, 6 in the evening and which changes every two months), served by a crack team that is as low-profile as it is professional. Given the limited number of seats (just 16), it is advisable to book ahead." - Michelin Inspector

I made a lunch reservation at this restaurant late the evening before, which required a deposit covering the full price of the meal. Unfortunately, due to a personal emergency, I was unable to attend the following day. I contacted the restaurant promptly that morning — well before any preparation would have begun — but was informed that the reservation could not be cancelled and that the full amount would be retained. While I understand the need for policies, a little flexibility and understanding in such situations would go a long way. It’s a disappointing approach and, in my view, not the most thoughtful way to treat guests.

We had a wonderful dining experience at Nakatani. The 6 course meal was unique, delicious, and memorable. The dining room is simple yet refined and intimate. We had a large party of 8 but the chef and server were very accommodating. From course to course the dishes were beautifully prepared and the flavors exceeded our expectations.

I cannot express the disappointment that I have in writing this review- I have eaten at dozens of Michelin rated restaurants and I cannot understand how this has attained a star based on the degustation we had here in October. It’s a great privilege to eat at such a highly rated establishment, and I fully appreciate the work that goes into a chefs preparation - however I do not think that he tasted the food he was serving. My husband described many of the courses as bland mush, and I can’t come up with a better description. The amuse bouche was best described as boring, and it was frankly the best service of the meal… including the Wagyu steak supplement we had. The desert was inedible and we had already sent so much back uneaten, I was embarrassed. The insult to injury was the price which, when converted, came to nearly $1000 Aussie, including one of the least expensive wines on the list. I was very glad I didn’t order the bottle we had originally planned. The restaurant was empty, and it was a Friday night in Paris… for a Michelin restaurant, that says a lot. Nakatani sadly won’t be keeping their star with that menu.

The food is really not amazing. Not a single dish was really good. I respect the creativity but good should be delicious not just creative. Service is ok but I would expect much better English in such a restaurant. Atmosphere - we came to celebrate my wife's birthday, we were sitted on the opposite sides of a round table. Considering the expectation of a michelin star and the price, it was a dissapointment.

#23 cf MichelinStarsChallenge list A very French Japanese chef Amongst the Japanese chef with a star that we have in Paris, he is one more of the French side. And yet, the name he decided to put on his restaurant could not be more Japanese (it’s his name). That’s interesting because the competition (and there’s a lot of Japanese with a star) are using French name with a more exotic cuisine. So it’s French cuisine with a perfect execution and some personal notes from the chef (very elegant, so little touches, etc..). You ll have a great meal. Also I do appreciate when the chef makes an effort to say goodbye (or come to the tables etc…) it’s a nice touch and not everyone does that. Great for couples. Possible for business lunch and friends. Well deserved star. You’ll have an experience. The mood: I’ll go for a discreet but classy style (Paul Neuman). It’s ok to wear a costume but you don’t have to. Personally I do enjoy, so I d wear a “casual” one. Edit: I went back after a year. I recommend to try the Wagyu as only few have it. It is definitely a well deserved star. I thought it was more in between France and Japan this time. Especially with the “terre/mer” with foie gras. Note that it has only 4 tables.

Came here for lunch, which was a delightful experience. All the courses were beautifully prepared and very tasty. The restaurant can be easy to miss when passing on the street, but definitely a must visit if you get the chance. Highly recommend

Very very fine place ! The atmosphere is calm, simple and cozy. Very few tables. Delicate and efficient service. Choice of wine by the glass excellent. We had the lunch menu, and it was delicious, extremely well executed and very balanced from start to finish. I strongly recommend a visit. Almost forgot: pricing is totally adequate for the quality.

Despite it is quite expensive, yet the food quality deserves the price! This is a private kitchen where the chef decides the menu for you! Well, it is goox to have a try!!

Yelp
A disappointing lunch - even cannot offer a clean cup for water!! Waitress did not seem very friendly too. Starters taste quite mediocre and very very common . The only shinning point is the main course Wagyu beef (which needs 45euro more). The duck is so so.

Yelp
The service was impeccable! I ate at Nakatani a few weeks ago and honestly it was the service that really shone. It is a very small space but put together very well. We were sat in a secluded spot at the back of the restaurant making it very romantic. The table was set beautifully with all that one should expect at such a wonderful restaurant. On to the food - the first few courses were spectacular. However as we continued whilst we both enjoyed our meals and all the courses we, felt that the flavours did not sit well together - maybe a little too much experimentation. However overall it was a great experience and would recommend to friends.

Yelp
An amazing experience. Weekday lunch at Nakatani es not only an excellent value, but an ode to French cooking with the occasional nod to Japanese ingredients. A three course meal is actually broken down in several sub courses, with surprising flavor combinations and incredible precision. Service is agreeable, and the dining room is of a stark, austere quality. Must go if you are in Paris looking for a well priced Michelin star experience.

Yelp
Wow!! What a treat, this is seriously one of the best meal I've had. Everything was cooked perfectly and flavors are explosive!

Yelp
The chef Nakatani opened his own restaurant later last year. He does something..... a little bit different from other fellow Japanese chefs, the way to extract or combine,,,,,hmm that was the first thing I noticed. All the delicate complexes and flavors were there, lovely presentation and all the rest. I liked them though somehow the order of meals was not stacked up very much - at that time for me, it was a bit overpowering for what I expected ;) Probably having the cheese ( it was the option of course ) that much was not a good idea either - I must amid. Anyway I would like to try again to see more how he does... It is in deed a beautiful restaurant and the course menu is very reasonably priced for that quality. So its definitely worth the try!
