"Off the beaten path on a Manhattan side street called Extra Place, fiancés Stevenson Aung and Angelique Chmielewski, have just opened a bricks and mortar showcase for their e-tail shop, full of off-the-beaten-path extras. In their careers as industrial and fashion designers, respectively, they’ve spent years amassing quite the collection of Japanese-inspired design—that mix of style, craft, function, and a little wabi-sabi—and finally have the perfect glass-fronted location to showcase it all, from Azmaya tea accessories to Sunao cutlery, to Fog Linen baskets. Had a truly terrible experience ordering a gift from the online store and recommend you avoid these guys. TLDR: Items are marked in stock when they are not (maybe this a drop ship business?), communication from the team was TERRIBLE & unapologetic, service was shockingly slow. Avoid, avoid, avoid. DETAILED RECAP: Purchased two items as a birthday gift which I noted in the included birthday message during time of order. Even though the items I purchased were marked "in stock", the items were actually out of stock. I only found this out 4 days later when the staff got around to sending me a note (just a couple of days before the item should have arrived and too late to find and arrange another gift). They said that the items would be back in stock in two weeks. About a month after my purchase, I emailed them requesting a change in the shipping address as the recipient was no longer going to be at the original address. Two days later, after no reply, I got a shipping notification indicating delivery to the original address. I wrote a few emails and forwarded the request I had sent to change the shipping address. Finally I got my first communication from them since their note telling me the item was out of stock weeks earlier. Two more days after generating the shipping label, the item has still not been delivered to the shipper.

Nalata Nalata is a design store and studio based in New York City that is dedicated to promoting the work of independent designers and craftsmen from Japan and North America. Founded in 2013 by partners Stevenson Aung and Angélique Chmielewski, the store has become well-known for its carefully curated selection of objects that showcase the beauty of simple, yet functional design. At Nalata Nalata, you can find everything from handcrafted ceramics and artisanal textiles to sleek home appliances and minimalist furniture. Each item is chosen for its exceptional quality, timeless appeal, and ability to inspire joy in everyday life. The store also hosts exhibitions and events that bring together designers, artists, and other creative thinkers to explore the intersections of art, design, and culture.

This is perhaps my favorite boutique retail location in New York. The store owners and the store manager are incredibly knowledgeable, passionate, and kind. All their products are hand crafted by master artisans that if cared for, will last a lifetime. I highly recommend Nalata and Nalata!

I got these for my friend and she loves them! Nalata Nalata has really great quality pieces that are handmade with craft. The staff person helping us was super nice and knowledgeable too. Definitely coming back here :)

Gorgeous little shop for well designed and handcrafted home wares at astonishingly accessible prices. The quality of every item in the store is magnificent. You can tell they curate the collection carefully and it's really fun to browse through the craftsmen's work.

I’m sure in person the shop and the owners are great like the reviews state here, but never again will I place an online order. First off, their inventory is reflected falsely. When i had placed my order back in October, 2 items which were listed as available were actually out of stock. After a week had passed after initially placing an expensive order I received no updates after automated confirmation email. I reached out 2 weeks later only to then be told a few items were back ordered and that they were waiting till they received the stock to ship. Long story short, i had to keep reaching out as opposed to them providing me updates on my order for the next 5 months. EDIT: After leaving my review, I was disclosed that this team is quite small and that my situation was apparently one off (paraphrasing, not verbatim). So fair warning to any online patrons that YOU the customer will have to be proactive and monitor your order.

I purchased the pine and sandalwood incense sticks and I have never smelled anything so beautiful. They are shipped from Japan. Since they were on back order I had to wait a bit longer than I had anticipated but it was well worth the wait. As long as Nalata Nalata continues to supply these little sticks from heaven I will be a forever customer!
