V-Nam Cafe Review - East Village - New York - The Infatuation

"A small storefront less than a block from Houston in the East Village, V-Nam is a place that you could walk by time and again without even noticing. Next time, take notice, and head to the counter inside the four-table space. The bánh mì here are about the size of Subway footlongs, so they're great to split with someone else. Order the classic version with cold cuts and sweet BBQ ground pork, or get the beef bánh mì with medium spice. (The spiciest level comes with Thai chilies that tend to overwhelm the juicy meat and vinegary vegetables.) For something on the side, get the crackly fried spring rolls, and complete your meal with a Vietnamese iced coffee. photo credit: Emily Schindler" - Team Infatuation

Very disappointing. Went here to get a banh mi to go (cold cut) to eat on the plane. They told me they don’t have cold cut ..?? This is the most basic banh mi, mind you. Ordered their popcorn chicken, and it was the driest chicken i had in years… couldn’t even chew it properly. The table seating is very uncomfortable for people above 6 foot Service was slow as well. 2 stars only because team was nice.

Decent pho spot with plenty of parking. The pho is good—not too oily—and the toppings come on the side, which I like. The place is clean, and the pho tastes homemade. I ordered the brisket bowl, and it was solid. Sriracha, sauces, and water are self-serve near the cashier. It gets busy during weekday lunch, so expect a bit of a crowd. The cashier could work on their customer service—blunt and not very friendly when asked a question. Some servers don’t speak much English, and the cart they push around is pretty loud and distracting. The place has a no-frills vibe, which makes sense why people keep coming back. They have a big menu, including bubble tea. The chairs and booth benches could use some fixing, as they feel unstable. Overall, not bad—the chalk decorations add a nice touch.

Nam Eatery is an absolute gem in the Heights and a must-visit for anyone craving fresh, flavorful Vietnamese cuisine in the neighborhood. Conveniently, they offer a few private parking spots out front shared with the neighboring business. The restaurant itself has a laid-back vibe—order at the counter, take a number, and find a spot while they prepare your meal. Everything is made from scratch, and you can truly taste the difference in each dish. Their menu is packed with Vietnamese classics, including a variety of pho, banh mi (Vietnamese sandwiches), vermicelli bowls, and more. [PHO] +Pho Tofu for $13 - I love the pho here, and this is the one I order almost every time. It’s perfect when you’re feeling under the weather, during cold days, or whenever you’re just craving something comforting and satisfying. - 5/5 Nam Eatery has earned its reputation as a neighborhood favorite for good reason—every meal feels like a home-cooked masterpiece, served with care and flavor. I would highly recommend checking this place out!

Google
First time ever to this place. You order at the counter and you pay at the counter and when you pay the the first thing that comes up is how much you want to tip. How would I know how much I want to tip when all I’ve done is order my food at the counter. I don’t like to tip before I get my food I like to see how the services and how the food is. So that was a turn off.. they also add a dollar for being a local business to stay open to contribute to the cost of the to go containers and napkins and stuff like that. I guess that also was a turn off. I didn’t notice that until I read the paper menu when I sat down, I think they should include prices for containers and cups and such in the price of the item you’re buying. I had the barbecue pork sandwich it was good. I also ordered pork fried rice with the pineapple which $16 or $17 seemed kind of pricey for an order of fried rice. I had to ask them to include some soy sauce and some hoisin sauce for the rice for when I got home since I only want the fried rice to take home and I ate the sandwich there. The fried rice was OK. It had red and bell green peppers in it. I’ve never had pork fried rice that had bell peppers in it. It made it have a different taste than I was used to, but not in a good way. I probably will never go back because I don’t go to Houston that often but if I do, I’ll get it without the bell peppers and I want to pay $17 for fried rice and nine dollars for sandwich. I don’t see the point of chipping before you get your food because the person who took the order at the register didn’t even bring the sandwich or the rice out . I drank water and you have to get up and get it yourself, so what exactly are you tipping for before you actually get your food and be served. a waitress for many years tip means to ensure prompt service or to ensure proper service. How would you know what kind of service you get if you have to tip when you pay before you get your food. Basically, I spent $25 for one sandwich and an order of pineapple pork fried rice. They should cut the pineapple up smaller it was too big for the rice.

Ordered from here and was excited to try finally! Until I took a bite into my pho! A sharp piece of the container was broken into it. Not a great experience. Please be more careful when packing the food this could have ended up badly. And just realized I didn’t get my pork buns I ordered. (Not a great experience).

Came here for the first and we ordered tofu vanmi! I love the subtle tartness and salt and peppery taste of it! :) Also I like the vibe inside the store! :) If I’m around there, I’ll come visit again. I love the vegetarian option so keep it up your good work! :) Cheers 🥂

Google
The pho and banh mi are delicious. I highly recommend trying the beef filet banh mi with a fried egg—it’s absolutely amazing. The owner is very friendly too. If you prefer not to have the fried eggrolls that come with your meal, he’s more than happy to replace them with a fried egg. The only downside is that the cleanliness of the restaurant could be improved a bit. The floors, tables, and chopstick containers could use a little more attention.

Google
This place is semi-spacious with plenty of seating for individual, couples or small groups to dine. The majority of orders are take-out, so if you just want to eat in peace, seating is normally not a problem. The bahn mi sandwiches are great tasting and texture. Don't forget to pair it with a steamy bowl of pho as they both are fair priced, quality and flavor. They also have plenty of drink options from beer, to tea, to soft drinks and coffee.

Yelp
The food was amazing and exactly what my wife was craving. It came out quick and tasted awesome. The service was very friendly and helpful with anything we needed. The restaurant itself is inviting and has very nice murals in the walls.

Yelp
Pho is great , spring rolls bomb with a crunchy twist , & the lunch deal for the popcorn chicken is a must ! Service is always fast & super friendly !!

Yelp
Pretty decent Viet food! I came here for a quick weekday dinner. They have a good selection of pho, banh mi, and noodle dishes. Their spring rolls were one of my favorites in a while! $7 but they are large and have crunchy filling in the middle that make them worth it. Banh-mi was also solid. Mango smoothie was great. The lettuce wraps I wish were made easier to eat - the meat was very tasty but it very messy to eat as it was essentially a bed of meat on a bed of lettuce vs individual lettuce wraps that could pick up. All in all this was a nice place for casual dining.

Yelp
Food was good! My boyfriend was disappointed with the filet mignon bánh mì, which naturally disappointed me as well, because it didn't have enough meat in it... The tofu vermicelli I ordered was pretty good as well as the spring rolls!

Yelp
After a few days of traveling, I was excited to come home and eat some asian comfort food. I live in the area and have seen this spot a few times. I didn't feel like going to Chinatown so we decided to stop by. We had the dry chicken pho and the beef pho. The portions were smaller than what I expected for the price. The pho did not have much meat and the broth tasted artificial. The dry chicken pho was the better dish of the two but still not anything very impressive. There were probably only 4-5 pieces of chicken in it. The one thing I did really like was the ginger dipping sauce it came with. Overall, I probably won't be back as there are some other more authentic and affordable asian spots popping up in this area.

Yelp
It was quick and easy to order like a fast food pho. Everything is self serve. Also happen to have Girl Scout cookies on site too $6. Small place not for huge parties. Parking at incline and small lot.

Yelp
Meh. Stopped to pick up some food since it's less than 5 min from my house. Had not been in a while so ordered a few things to try - pork belly buns, hot honey wings and the grilled pork rice plate. Pork belly buns - regretfully a waste, 2 to an order - each bun had 1 tiny piece of dry pork belly, a small slather of sauce, cucumber slice and cilantro. I couldn't even force myself to eat the 2nd one (sorry) Hot honey wings - drenched in chilli oil, they were cooked well Grilled pork rice platter - the grilled pork was overcooked and not marinated like most places - the fish sauce was meh, I used my own, the egg was over medium so thr yolk was in that not cooked.all the way but not runny either state, the rice was good It was a lackluster dinner. Maybe it's fresher and tastier when it's dine in or maybe I just ordered the wrong things, I wasn't impressed this time and was looking forward to some tasty Viet food.

Yelp
We go here all the time. Usually Saturday for lunch, great lunch special till 2pm. Place is always clean and well maintained and owner always at the front, to take your order. Usually get the Bench Mi pork and shrimp spring rolls. Changed it up today and had the meatball Pho. Very good. Only issue was the fly's they seemed to be everywhere today. Service was quick and efficient as usual. Plane and simple good food for a good price.
google avatar

Yelp
Too expensive for what it is. Ordered a pho rare beef with meatballs--$13. Pho came out with 95% noodles and barely any meat. Asked if I can have more veggies--said I would have to pay extra like why did you only give me 5 pieces of basil Business model no longer works. Serving basic food for high dollars. I rather go to pho Ben instead. Extra star since it was edible.
google avatar

Jay C.

Yelp
The food was overpriced. The quality doesn't match the price. The shrimp tasted over cooked and reheated. I couldn't finish my plate. The mango lemonade was good however.

Yelp
Love coming here for a quick and delicious lunch. The food is authentic , reasonably priced and hits the spot every time. I've tried multiple dishes here-- pho, banh mi, rice plate, and I always enjoy my meal. Their lunch special is great because you can get a spring roll or egg roll + an iced tea with select dishes. Service is quick and friendly. I never have to wait long for my food when dining in or grabbing take out. Make sure to stop by this restaurant for your next meal!

Yelp
Food is amazing, every time! On time and great service! I've got nly gotten my food to go so I can't speak to the Ambiance.

Yelp
If we are ever in the area, it's no question that we are going to stop here to eat. We've tried a good chunk of the menu and everything is more amazing than the last! You seriously can't go wrong! They have the best spring rolls! Seriously wanting some while I write this. Only down side is that they are closed on Sundays. The owner is also very kind and hospitable every time we come in! Overall great place!

Yelp
Had a very nice bahn mi here, and the pork belly bao appetizer was very yummy. Quick take out. Friendly service

Yelp
BEST PHO in Houston!!!!! I have eaten a lot of Pho in Cali, especially in the OC. When eating pho, it's all about the soup. The depth of the soup, the taste of the soup, the color, the temperature, and smell. This place checked all the boxes. I was told by the worker, that they made the soup fresh everyday, early in the morning. I ordered the combo bowl and I was not disappointed, the soup came fast and hot. The aroma was incredible, I noticed that right away. The first sip of the soup brought joy and kinda back to my childhood. Next was the noodles, perfectly adente, not too soft and not too chewy. I ordered it with semi cooked bean sprouts, which IMO is the best way to eat it. It keeps the temperature of the soup hot. The combo bowl had four kind of meats, filet, brisket tendon, and meatball. I like the brisket the best, it was tender and buttery; melts in your mouth. The meatball was the second best, vietnamese meatballs, should have a bounce when bit into it, this had that, with a very meaty taste. This is a must try spot for pho in Houston. Thanks Nam Eatery for a wonderful meal.

Yelp
A new place to eat pho in heights ! The restaurant was clean and staff was decent. You order and pay before you sit. The food was enjoyable, had a tasty pho and banh mi. I would definitely come back if i'm in the area.

Yelp
Decent Pho and Vermecelli. Vermicelli bbq pork could be a little less fatty. Saving grace was the zucchini noodles for the girlfriend. A little on the pricey side but expected for the area.

Yelp
I decided to give this place a try from searching the yelp engine for a pho spot. The place is relatively small in size. As I entered the premises, I could smell of mop/cleaning odor which was somewhat strong. I ordered my food at the counter and pre paid. I went with a beef pho, an order of soft spring rolls with shrimp and a beef banh mi. While in my past experiences, I have witnessed stinginess with the meat serving in my banh mi, so I decided to pay extra for "more meat". The spring rolls arrived first and they were on point. They were served with peanut sauce. Next came the pho. The bowl was small in size. While it tasted fine, my biggest issue was the serving size. Last came the banh mi. Sad to say, even with paying extra for more meat, my pho did not have enough meat. I think I was served the regular serving of meat. While the food may have tasted fine, serving sized should never be compromised, especially if the customer has paid extra for that perk. I wont be coming back.

Yelp
We used to come here regularly before COVID, this was the first time back and we really enjoyed what we ordered. We had tofu spring rolls, a shaking tofu with vermicelli and the tofu pho. Everything was really tasty and we thoroughly enjoyed our dinner. Service was quick. We're planning on going back soon.
google avatar

Yelp
If your looking for some of the best pho and spring rolls your in the right place. I been coming here since I found this spot and let me tell you it does not disappoint. Hands down some of the best food it town. I also tried the sesame chicken and it was also really flavorful and appetizing.
google avatar

Maritza Z.

Yelp
Delicious Pho was beyond tasty the broth was perfection! Spring roll were YUM!!! We ordered take-out & I let them know that it would be about 20-30 minutes before we could pick up order & they were super accommodating.
google avatar

Leanne E.

Yelp
I ordered the vermicelli bowl with tofu since it's Friday and I can't have meat. I also ordered the shrimp spring rolls which comes with two. I am full! Both were delicious!!! We came for lunch, no line. Quick ordering and food came fairly quick. I didn't go to the restroom, not sure how that is. Parking is not great. Small suite. Busy street so it's a bit of a pain getting in and out.

Yelp
Super Delish Pho in Houston Where have you been all my life, the Soup is incredibly tasty, just like how my parents used to make it. They are hands down the best Pho soup in Houston. You can taste the richness in the broth, some places, it taste like water, but here, the complexity of the soup is off the charts. From the first taste to the last, you get a wide range of flavors, it's savory, sweet, and aromatics. There are so many different flavors in their soup, plus they don't use MSG like many other Pho places. Which in itself is hard to do. Overall, the place is clean and cheap, you can't go wrong coming here for Pho.
google avatar

Camille P.

Yelp
I have only ordered takeout and I love them! We always order pho brisket and meatballs. So good. I also love their caramelized pork ribs. They are sweet, salty and spicy. The man working the phone and register is always there and is very organized. This place is a lifesaver when I'm craving authentic Vietnamese food.
google avatar

Diane K.

Yelp
Today I stopped in for a quick lunch. I had a tofu baguette, which had quite a bit of veggies, and the bread was ever so fresh. That's what makes a good sandwich after all. The soft shrimp rolls came out with a finer presentation than I expected, considering this location is in a small strip center. They were on a cute porcelain plate with a built in Peanut sauce holder. Prices here are very reasonable, parking is directly in front where you can watch your car. Very friendly counter service. Not a date night place, but extremely suited for a quick and casual lunch. Nice ambiance.
google avatar

Lauren C.

Yelp
Wow! I love this place. Ordered take out on a chilly night. I got the dry chicken pho and it was delicious. Probably the best soup I've had in Houston. So much flavor and not oily or salty. Portions are good for the price you pay. We also ordered the pork fried rice and that was very good too. Definitely will try again!
google avatar

Yelp
Food was excellent, service was great will def be back. I would def recommend giving this place a try!
google avatar

Yelp
As a person that hates the taste of star anise I've always been opposed to pho. My sister brought me here and I had the spicy combo pho and it was AMAZING and reallyyyyy spicy the spring rolls are heavenly with the little crunchy thing inside and the peanut sauce is amazing!!! Definitely a must try for foodies! I've come several times since and it's been great each time.
google avatar

Cynthia V.

Yelp
I have seen this place several times and always meant to try it, so I was pleased to finally make it happen. I used UberEats to order delivery. I am a sucker for all things appetizers when it comes to Vietnamese food, so I did a selection of the finger foods - pork belly buns, egg rolls, pork spring rolls, and pan-fried dumplings. It was all great, but I would say my standout favorite was the pork belly buns; the pork belly was tender and flavorful, topped with freshly sliced cucumber in the perfectly textured boa bun. The portions were all very satisfying and affordable. I look forward to trying this place in person one day!
google avatar

Melyssa W.

Yelp
This place is so delicious! The pho is one of the best. The spring rolls are fresh and have large shrimp in them. The restaurant is very clean and the people are friendly. It is a great spot to stop in for some Vietnamese food. It has a convenient location with plenty of parking in the front. I definitely recommend checking it out!

Adam G.

Yelp
Food here was amazing!! I had the pho, spring rolls, popcorn chicken, and smoothie and it was all delightful. This pho was the best I ever had. I never thought eggrolls can be so good until I went here.

Yelp
Fast, tasty and clean! Chilled ambiance Will definitely come back. There is a wheelchair ramp

Yelp
Great little Vietnamese restaurant in the heights. Really loved their chicken pho. The broth is savory and authentic. Also enjoyed their pork buns. This is a fast casual kind of place so come as you are :)

Yelp
I had the Spring rolls with chicken, which was actual chicken and not sliced deli chicken, huge thumbs up; another added touch was the fried scallion gave a surprise crunch and a nice flavor. Their peanut sauce was mild and had a good flavor, I added the chili paste to it to give it some heat. That is a personal preference for my dipping sauce. The Vermicelli bowl with Chicken and an added fried egg. Plenty of vegetables, good seasoning on the chicken, chicken was moist, the egg just runny enough. I enjoyed this plate, it was exactly what I needed after a day of suffering from a very bad meal, the day before. The ingredients were prepared well, very fresh, and tasty. Not pictured is the eggroll, which is one of the best I have ever had in one of these dishes. It was not greasy and the meat inside was so yummy I wanted to order more, but I did not want to eat more oil fried food and risk upsetting my stomach. The restaurant was very clean, and nicely decorated, a picture that did not turn out was their Vegetable cart for the Pho. I think it is wonderful they allow you to choose your vegetables for your Pho, that way you only take what you like. I will be back to try more.

Yelp
Delicious huge spring rolls and egg rolls !! Pho chicken was really good, will come back again

Yelp
Wow!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Incredible PHO!!!!!!!! I was driving around the Historic Area looking for a home, and stumbled on to this unique place. Not knowing what to order, I asked the counter person (Mikey) what is the best, and he said, "try the PHO". I ordered the brisket, meatball, and shrimp PHO and was definitely surprised. Do not judge the book by its cover. I have eaten PHO all over Texas, this PHO is good as any that I have eaten. Eating PHO is really dependent on the SOUP, without a good soup, you can have the best ingredients and it will not matter. The soup had a lot of depth and abundance of flavor, super rich with seasoning and vietnamese spices. It was done really well. The meats and noodles were outstanding, but it was the soup that captivated my taste buds. It held them hostage until the last drop of broth.... Another surprise from Nam was their smoothie, I ordered the MANGO smoothie and watched them make it. They used a whole cup of fresh mangos and soy milk. Top notch ingredients makes for good eats. Really good PHO experience, and super CHEAP for high quality eats. Good job Nam Eatery, will be back when I buy a house in the area.

Makoa C.

Yelp
When I walked in, there were no customers, but I still ordered. Then I noticed the place was neglected and had dirty tables and peaked in the kitchen and it was dirty. When I saw this woman who works there put her fingers inside her mouth to dig in the back of her teeth, I knew I didn't want to order from them. I told the owner and the nasty woman got angry and started cursing. She said she wasn't making my food. However, that is no excuse since she is still packaging people's food and that is just something you don't do especially in the times we are living. Skip this place and go to a cleaner restaurant with better service.
google avatar

Olivia W.

Yelp
I really like almost everything about this place. I come because they have the Zoodle option for all their Phos which is healthier! The broth is very flavorful and not salty. There is no MSG added (I asked). The Pho Thai meat was not too thick and tasted great! I really like how here they store their veggies in a refrigerator for you to go and grab. The only con is that it's MORE EXPENSIVE to eat squash as opposed to regular rice noodles! I paid $14.00 for my bowl! Wow! Now, it was very good...but my pocket hurts when I come here. I also really like their freshly made spring rolls. In the middle theirs a small fried piece which gives the roll a tiny bit of crunch. Very yummy and fresh! Although I complain about the price, I'll keep coming here. They've been consistent. I just don't understand how Cucumber is more expensive than using regular rice noodles...but hey...I'm not in the restaurant business. Definitely check this place out. It is very good!

Yelp
I had the Pho Tai here, and I ordered it delivery. If you're craving Pho, this will check every box. And if you're not craving Pho, THEN YOU HAD BETTER START CRAVING PHO, MISTER!!! There is so much bad food in this town--when it comes to ordering in. I suppose a lot of places figure you won't send it back, so who cares, but this place is a safe, solid bet, and you'll enjoy it. Unless you don't like Pho at all, in which case, why are you reading the reviews for a Pho place??? Are you some kind of masochist or WHAT? Oh, I also got the fish sauce wings to split, and could've eaten an order of them by myself, AND the Pho. I could drink the sauce they come with, and I like that they get sauteed with bell pepper pieces. It makes them less one-note, like wings too often are. This'll be my go-to Pho joint, and for the record I've eaten more food in Vietnam than I have in Orange County, and I've eaten up and down that place, mama.

Yelp
I am very disappointed to have to write this. Nam was the best Pho place in town. It has gone to crap! I have been visiting and ordering from Nam 1-2 times a week for years and will now stop. Here is why: - The food quality has plummeted - They are cutting corners, mess up deliveries and have lowered the quality and amount of ingredients. - when I call them to politely ask, I get non-answer responses and bullshit. So sad. This used to be such a great place. Looking for alternatives now.

Yelp
Love me some Vietnamese pho. This place does not disappoint, I ordered the filet mignon pho, beef was so tender, broth was clear and full of flavor. My wife's rice dish with grilled beef was a tad dryer than she cared for, when she brought it to the servers attention, they offered to make another dish, or even offer any other protein, my wife kindly declined and they surprised us minutes later by not charging for my wife's dish at all. These folks deserve all the good business coming to them. It is great to see an eating establishment that still has integrity in customer service and cooks up great food. Support our local eateries.

Yelp
My favorite Vietnamese restaurant in the heights the bahn mis are perfectly made bread is a perfect blend of toasted and soft and so flavorful, the pho broth is phenomenal and with the chicken pho you get this amazing ginger sauce that goes perfectly, the spring rolls are always huge you really can't go wrong with anything here! As a plus fast and always friendly service!

Yelp
Nam Eatery never fails to impress me time after time! This time I had to say something! The bread for banh mi was so hot and fresh! My pickled veggies were so fresh! The tofu was the best tofu I've had in so long! It being so lightly salted and peppered just showed the craftsmanship! My strawberry lemonade was delicious! My spring rolls were perfect! Loved it all!

Lyla O.

Yelp
This is a local favorite of ours at my work office. Always great for you. Friendly owner and great Thai tea. I like the pork ribs. They're small and delicious. The Pho' is good. My coworker raves about it, parking is a bit rough not enough spaces there's a nail shop next-door but I'm not sure if they tow if you're going into NAM; this place is worth it if you can find a parking spot. Definitely worth going back.!

Monica T.

Yelp
Love: I have ordered the Pho Ga Kho (dry chicken pho, broth comes on the side) from here at least 6 times, the Bo Ne (sizzling beef, fried egg, french bread and pate + butter on the side) is the only one I'm willing to eat again in the loop so far and it has an amazing pate for my fellow pate fanatics, and I also really enjoy the Bun Thit Nuong (vermicelli with grilled pork) from here too. They pay special attention to the flavors in their dishes, and it tastes so much more like home to me than nearby places like Les Givrals, Pho Binh on White Oak, etc. Pass on these: Pho and Banh Mi. These are basics where you can find better versions of at Viet restaurants that specialize in these dishes. Obviously, it won't be as good at a place like Nam that doesn't focus on these dishes. Be aware that the price point is higher here. For some really great Viet food, I'm 100% willing to pay the same amount of money for a dish as I am at an any other Italian, French, and American restaurant!! Highly recommend, and I love to support a business in the loop that is Vietnamese owned and operated!
