How Vermont Restaurants Are Rebuilding After July Floods | Eater

"A small takeout restaurant next to a heavily damaged taproom, this Indian–Nepali spot was described by its accountant as “destroyed” by the flood; the owner was abroad during the storm, language barriers complicate access to aid, and photos of the aftermath were reported as terribly bad." - Jacqueline Cain

My lamb curry was phenomenal! Excellent and fast service. Large portions. My son began crying and they were so kind as to bring him a mango lassi. I highly recommend the food here as I have come several times over the last few years. The goat, chicken, Lamb and vegetable dishes have all been top notch. Keep up the good work!

Google
This was a surprise of a small restaurant. Excellent food with large portions. We came for an early lunch, which shortly became crowded. Excellent food choices. The staff was courteous and friendly. As always, if you enjoyed my review, please smash the "Like" button. Thank you.

This restaurant just saved the day for us in Vermont! Most places were packed or already closed during the fall pick, but it went above and beyond by staying open late to accommodate all the visitors, even though their usual closing time is 9 PM. We ordered chicken dumplings, chicken biryani, goat biryani, veg biryani, and chicken kadai with plain rice. Each dish was flavorful and well-prepared, with the biryanis being standout favorites, perfectly spiced and cooked just right. The chicken kadai had a rich, savory sauce that paired beautifully with the rice. The only slight miss was the dumplings, which could’ve been a bit better, but overall, the food was excellent. What really made the experience memorable was the service. Despite the restaurant being crowded, the staff handled everything with warmth and efficiency, making sure everyone was taken care of. Highly recommend this spot for its food and hospitality!

Google
Namaste is truly a gem and one of our favorite spots since moving to Vermont. The cozy, inviting atmosphere sets the perfect tone, and their service is always attentive and friendly. As for the food, it’s nothing short of incredible—delicious and full of flavor. If you’re in town, we can’t recommend it enough!

Google
Cute space with great mood setting tunes nothing too loud here. This place has a casual vibe that leads to relaxed eating. The food is notably made in house (would suggest the garlic naan bread) and the portions are now than fair. If you like things spicy be sure to make that clear. The medium is mild. I had the lamb and the meat falls apart in your mouth leaving a smooth savory flavor that compliments the curry nicely. Great place for a casual date or introverted get together.

Google
My Boss and I eat here mostly every Thursday - We order the same thing every time because WE CAN'T GET ENOUGH OF THE YUMMINESS!! My all time fave is their Butter Chicken!! They are always so friendly and kind! 100% recommend when your craving Indian food! 😁 Best Around!

Google
Stopped here for dinner and was phenomenal. I really enjoyed the butter chicken and garlic naan. Would come again!

Google
What a nice surprise. Three of us ordered three different curries. (You can choose the heat level). Mine (lamb/coconut milk) was delicious, as were all the others. Friday evening, so most of the tables were taken and service was great. Also a fellow arrived with a guitar set-up and played quiet, perfectly appropriate and pleasant back-ground music.

Yelp
Just great. 2nd time here and another home run. Vegetable Pakora is. *superb*, crunchy, delicious. Must have. Lamb curry is rich, great tomatoey sauce, tender lamb (unlike many Indian places!) Shrimp korma is super rich, coconut/ground cashew sauce, shrimp perfectly cooked. Last time we had a Father's Day special, Cilantro Lamb, that is not to be missed. Amazing sauce. Service is friendly and competent, and the place is cheery and well-kept. All in all Namaste is a wonderful asset for Montpelier!

Yelp
This was by far the best Indian Food I have had in my life. I got butter chicken which is a staple and it was perfect! Garlic naan was delicious and a decent size at that. Chicken pakora was juicy as well. I was greeted at the door by an employee who brought me my pickup order right away. Restraunt itself was quaint and clean, even though I left to eat at

Yelp
My wife, two teenage sons (18 yrs, 16 yrs) and I enjoyed a delightful lunch here in mid-July 2024. We were not expecting to find authentic Nepalese cuisine (i.e., pork momos) in the middle of Montpelier after a fun visit to a nearby vintage clothing shop and a record store. Lots of pluses! First, it has a superb location on Main St. across from the Skinny Pancake. You can find paid meter street parking (during weekday lunch service) along Main St. (about a 5 minute walk away). Second, the chicken chow mein (with a nice combination of Nepalese curry spices) and pork dumplings (momos) were fabulous for lunch. My wife enjoyed the thali lunch combination plate and a side order of garlic naan bread. Third, the service was great at lunch. The staff noted the restaurant opened in spring 2022 (just over 2 years), but I hope it will thrive in Montpelier. It was a pleasant and welcome surprise for out-of-town tourists! Of course, if you dislike curries or have severe nut or other food allergies, this may not be the place for you. That said, we would certainly come here again for lunch on our next trip to Montpelier!

Lisa C.

Yelp
Food and service were both excellent! We will come back next time we are in Montpelier.

Ahrielle S.

Yelp
The ambiance walking in was great, we sat at the bar to order out. With the help of the staff we decided on lamb korma and were very excited to get it back to our hotel. Once we dug in though, our first bite was a STAPLE, not a bone or bug, but the office supply. We are very put off and let down by the food experience. But the staff was kind and helpful.

Bruce S.

Yelp
My wife and I had an excellent meal. Shrimp vindaloo, butter chicken and for a starter delicious pork momos. Highest recommendation!!

Mary H.

Yelp
Outstandingly delicious food - we ordered a wide variety of dishes, vindaloo, korma, tikka masala, biryani and they were excellent. Wonderful and attentive staff.
google avatar

LeeAnn M.

Yelp
The food was amazing - there was a variety of flavors and spices! We enjoyed friendly service, with just the right amount of attention. I highly recommend Namaste!

Yelp
We sat down for a great vegetarian meal tonight. We were greeted and seated right away, and the service staff was helpful and attentive. I had the Dal Saag (mild) and my partner had the Chana Saag (medium) with a side of plain naan bread. Both meals were fresh, flavorful and came with good size portions. We'll definitely be back.

Yelp
this restaurant is amazing! The best and freshest food ever. Service is wonderful and the people are very kind and helpful. My favorite is the dahl bowl. the thick one. And The tandoori chicken! Delicious. The atmosphere is relaxed. They welcomed me to sit at a table outside to have a conference call for an hour really great.

Yelp
We got takeout, but even after the 45 minute drive back our AirBnb--it was delicious. The food comes in huge portions per order and is priced reasonably for what you receive. We got two large orders of rice (that came with our food), butter chicken, mango lamb curry, coconut lamb curry, and a goat dish. The goat dish had a lot of bones which other reviews also state, but it was no issue for us. We also got two sides of vegetable samosas (one order = two samosas) and they were quite big. They were also very spicy! The spice level can be adjusted based on personal preference and we were all happy with our dishes. This was plenty of food for our group of 4 and we had leftovers.

Yelp
Table for 2 on a Saturday evening... wonderful service, wonderful staff and customers and wonderful food. We ordered dinner and were approached by another couple asking if we would like to join them. We did and it was a lovely experience with a renowned artist and architect. Both wonderful and engaging people. Such fun! We ordered butter chicken, coconut curry chicken, butter naan, Kashmiri naan and a wonderful tasting High Noon drink. Can't say enough good words about the food and customer service - outstanding all around! Look forward to a return visit and more good times and good food here. Yum!

Judy G.

Yelp
One of my favorite places when we are visiting VT. The Dal makhani is like no other that I've ever had. I had it there years ago and loved it!! Started ordering it at other restaurants and its doesn't even come close!! All the food is excellent. The waiter was super friendly and helpful when I had a question or needed something. We would definitely go back again!!

Ben T.

Yelp
The flavors are so good, balanced. Just completely mackable. Good value. Loved the naan breads and chicken tikka masala.

Kara W.

Yelp
delicious and super nice staff! Quiet atmosphere. super creamy magi lassi, not too sweet.

Linda C.

Yelp
My sister and I were visiting relatives and ate here for the first time. The food was fantastic and the staff was extremely friendly - We highly recommend.
google avatar

Lily H.

Yelp
The food is good every time we go which is 1-2times a month. We have only gotten take out (versus dining in), and especially love the samosa chaat, chicken vindaloo - medium spicy, chicken tikka masala - very spicy (found that the medium spice is barely noticeable for this dish), and garlic naan. The staff is friendly, but often get spelling or name wrong if you call in a phone order. If waiting for your order in the store, list off what you ordered because they could have an incorrect name listed on your order. Overall food is great, fair to generous sized portions, friendly staff, and would definitely recommend to others.

Yelp
Great to find this place, the staff was really helpful and the food tasted amazing. Try the rolls and Paneer dishes l, bet you won't be disappointed

Kayren H.

Yelp
Fish curry and lamb tikka masala with chili naan were all delicious! Service was on point. If we lived locally, we would eat here weekly!

Ann A.

Yelp
Amazing food and great dairy and gluten free options! So happy we found this!! Good size servings. We be back!!

Uriah K.

Yelp
We ordered off of DoorDash when we saw this place had become available, we ordered the chicken tikki masala, the coconut chicken curry, garlic naan bread and some Samosas. It was all very tasty and the flavor was great. The portion sizes were a little surprising, with just enough food for two people, a rice bowl we had to share that was pretty small, the total was almost $60, before the door dash fees. I was expecting really large portion sizes for the price of almost $20 per entree dish. That being said, it was delicious and the flavors were great!

Rusalka N.

Yelp
Amazing food! One of the best Indian dishes I had. Service was amazing and everybody smiley. Thank you

Kelly E.

Yelp
So good!!!!!! The saga paneer are best I have ever had. Really wonderful excellent service

Katie M.

Yelp
Outrageously good food! Really incredible. Chicken tikka masala, garlic naan were incredible. I am baffled by the mixed reviews! Service was great. Seems like a lot people are upset that the food wasn't to their preferred spice level... just ask when you order, not that hard.

James D.

Yelp
This is a well run place with very reasonably priced food. The folks who work there could not be nicer. I had the Coconut Chicken Curry and the Garlic Naan. Simple room, not fancy, quick attentive service. I'd for sure return the next time I'm in Montpelier
google avatar

Samantha A.

Yelp
Excellent food and friendly service. Worked well for a group of picky eaters. The food was very flavorful and portions were a good size.
google avatar

Jason M.

Yelp
Great food. Heriyali paneer is great. As is coconut chicken. Mango lassi was great. Chai tea was only meh. Despite what some reviewers said service was great.
google avatar

Marie D.

Yelp
This place gives amazingly delicious, giant portions. The flavors are so good and make sure to go here every time I'm in Montpelier. One of my favorite restaurants in the area, for sure! I recommend the Aloo Gobi and Naan!

Yelp
I love Indian food and have had a fair amount of it in my travels for work. I don't get to Montpelier often and had no idea this new restaurant had opened last year, so when I found out I had to try it right away. Ordered up my favorite go to for Indian which is chicken tikka masala and garlic naan. I was hoping to be blown away, but sadly I'm not. I ordered the chicken tikka masala "hot" which it couldn't have been further from. Besides having zero heat/spice, the sauce was actually extremely sweet. Way too sweet for my taste and compared to any other tikka masala I've ever had. It was just not balanced well with the acid from the tomatoes as it should be. This made the garlic naan the highlight of my meal, which was really good. I would try Namaste again, but would definitely ask for a recommendation for something that is much more savory/spicy. For people who want to try Indian, but are afraid it might be too spicy, the chicken tikka masala here would be for you.

Yelp
Literally sat for 40 minutes and no one took our order. Other people that came in after us were served and we kept being told that the server would get to us soon. We left without ordering. It's too bad... I'd been looking forward to eating there for a while. I guess I'll be sticking to ordering out from Rickie's in Barre.
google avatar

Laura S.

Yelp
Each dish was so delicious! We ended our meal what the hell food coma. Some guy came in and played a bit on his guitar. You won't be disappointed if you order in or take out! Make sure you order as much as you can handle! Even the mango lassi was to die for!

Aubrey M.

Yelp
Amazing authentic Indian food at a decent price. Tikka Masala is dope! Highly recommend for take out!

Debra D.

Yelp
Delicious food! Nicely priced and friendly waitstaff! I will be back! Comes out hot and scrumptious! Looks clean!

Yelp
This restaurant has exquisite Indian cuisine. Having eaten at Indian establishments in NYC and Washington D.C. I can attest to the fine good found here in Montpelier, VT. Thank you. So wonderful
google avatar

Srijata C.

Yelp
One of the only places open on Christmas night, really appreciate that. Food was okay, but again, not a lot of options last night. What really brings it down to the 2 stars is that we found a strand of hair embedded in the filling of the samosa chaat, and when we pointed it out, the guy spent a good 5 minutes trying to look for it and tug at it to prove us wrong. That took away my appetite for sure!
google avatar

Kit G.

Yelp
Had a great dine in lunch with friends. Everything was delicious, service great. Such friendly people. And there was a wonderful cauliflower dish, and an eggplant and squash one,all great. And perfect naan. Highly recommend!

Yelp
I have no choice but to apply the lowest possible score. We went in last Saturday without a reservation. The place was packed but they found us a kind of adjunct table right by the wall adjacent to the kitchen entrance. My wife and I were hungry and therefore happy for it. We love Indian food but being from further up north in Vermont we had never been to this restaurant. It became obvious that we were not on any of the regular wait staffs' normal circuit and so, after a time, the check out guy who had procured our table came over himself and took our order. We set about working out the NYT Sunday crossword as we waited in keen anticipation of our meal. We waited awhile. About halfway done the puzzle the checkout guy returned and expressed surprise that we had not yet gotten our food. He ran off into the kitchen to investigate but never reported back to us. We completely finished the puzzle, which takes about an hour. Still no food. I got up and went up to the cashier guy and inquired. "You still haven't gotten your food!?" He exclaimed. He was surprised, acted disappointed, but made no kind of move in the direction of what one might call an "action step." It was obvious we weren't going to get served, so we left. He apologized repeatedly us we walked out the door.

Robert F.

Yelp
I would give this place another shot. The samosa chaat was excellent, and the mango pickle was very good. The veg korma came in white gravy so sweet it tasted like kheer. No spice at all, and fairly bland. Maybe next time, I'll order the bone-in goat curry. Menu looks extensive, goat meat is bone-in, and they serve pickle. Definitely hallmarks of good Indian cuisine. Looking forward to trying a different dish there.

Maggie M.

Yelp
Do not go here if you have food allergies. Even if you warn them tell will and say you can order something else if that's an issue they will sell you food claiming it is fine when it is not.

Andrew M.

Yelp
So good this will haunt you dreams and stay with you forever! The Peshwari Naan was unbelievable! Off all the towns in all the world, Montepelier is lucky to have such access to this cuisine! Don't pass the chance to visit this place! Worth the wait.
google avatar

Yelp
Good authentic Indian food, hard to find in this area! The customer service was outstanding. The waiter made sure we had a great experience and that we enjoyed the food. We stopped by on a road trip from New York, the waiter made us cups of coffee to go for our trip just because we looked tired! Really I have not experienced such tasty food and such a kind environment in awhile. I highly recommend this place.

Gregory F.

Yelp
Not impressed. First my wife pulled up her chair and the seat was loose, so her finger got pinched badly and blood was dripping. The waiters made no attempt to help, and they did not replace the chair. Fortunately we had bandaids. It took two to shop the bleeding. Then the food: The reviews raved about the Biryani so I ordered that with goat. The goat was mostly bones and grissel with a maybe two bites of rubbery meat. Everyone else enjoyed their meal. I paid $19 for some good spicey rice with bones. We won't be going back

Reggie R.

Yelp
We've eaten here before a number of times. Of late there seems to have been a decline in service, as well as in the cooking. Not sure if there's a new chef(s), staffing shortage, or both. Ordered takeout and was told the food would be ready in 30 minutes. Since they usually run a little late, I came in around 45 minutes post-ordering to pick up the order. It wasn't ready yet, and there were many people in the dining area waiting. Only one woman working the register, taking orders, interacting with those waiting for food, and running back and forth to the kitchen. I was told it would be a few more minutes before my order was ready. Fine. When we finally got the food home, the order wasn't quite right. Dipping sauces were missing. The samosa were overdone and a bit greasy. Some dishes seemed over-salted. My (normally) favorite dish, the non-veg thali, has changed and the chicken part of it in the tasty sauce has been replaced with bland lentils & beans. Disappointing, and at $64 total, not cheap. Not sure we'll order from them again.

Steven B.

Yelp
I got the goat curry and garlic naan. Good flavor. The goat curry was full of sharp bones and joint parts that I had to pick out of every bite. Easily 12-15 bits, two were over a half inch long and sharp. I showed the waiter/cashier the bone bits and he told me that's normal for goat. That is not normal for goat meals. I live 1/4 mile from this restaurant in Montpelier. Never going there again. It's a shame because the curry was pretty good. I don't have much hope for this restaurant's longevity. Sad.

Crabby N.

Yelp
Finally, tandoori chicken, lamb saag, momos and more just 11 miles from home. Big portion of biryani. Had mango lassi. That's it for first visit. BUT THE NAME OF RESTAURANT IS NAMASTE Nepali & Indian Restaurant. Difficult to find on Yelp.

Fran L.

Yelp
These days I don't eat in, except at home , but my recent take out with this place has been very satisfying. Good, plentiful food. Tasty Tandoori chicken and biryani.
