Whenever I'm in the Thousand Oaks area and the timing is right, I like to stop by Namaste Spiceland. Their hot food is what attracts me and if you go at 9:00 am when they open, the food is not ready and you can see being prepared in the kitchen. It all comes out around 11 AM so you know it's fresh, there's a different menu every day and even though they are priced high, their selections have intense flavor, In addition, there is texture, a good mix of a variety of Indian spices, distinctive for each dish and a limited but attractive menu. All the food is vegetarian, but it is prepared daily, every morning. I started with the appetizer of aloo tiki, and then one medhu vada. The first with the two chutneys, the tamarind and the mint, and the second with the coconut chutney. I'd say the vada with coconut chutney was my favorite appetizer. As a carryout, I took the two item combo where I had garbanzo beans and lentils with rice. It comes with raita , and instead of pickle, I asked for chopped red onions. For the bread I chose the chapati, which turned out to be rubbery by the time I ate it (after 2 hours) and instead of plain rice, I had the coconut rice which was flavorful, but not soaking in coconut fragrance. That's the way I like it. This is a good place to visit if you're in the mood for wholesome vegetarian north Indian and south Indian food, to dine in, or to go.
