23 Exemplary Chinese Soup Dumplings in NYC

"Nan Xiang Express is a fast-food offshoot of the original Nan Xiang Xiao Long Bao, and though it doesn’t offer the dumplings in a rainbow of colors, it does provide pork, pork and crab, chicken, and the rather odd beef version of the famous dumplings." - Robert Sietsema

The beef noodle soup was really delicious — the beef was generous and came in big, tender chunks, which I loved. The broth was rich and comforting. The only small downside was that the noodles were a bit too soft, as if they were cooked a little too long. The staff at the front desk were very friendly and welcoming, always smiling, which made the experience even better. I would definitely come back again.

I stopped by this place for a quick solo dinner. It’s a well-known Chinese eatery famous for its soup dumplings, with multiple locations around New York City. I’ve been to their original spot in Flushing before, and this one in Williamsburg feels like a smaller satellite version — cozy but not ideal for large groups. Since it’s mostly self-service, you order from a screen inside, take a seat, and they bring your food to the table. I ordered a bowl of pork and shrimp wonton soup and their signature pork and leek soup dumplings (the green ones). I’ve had these dumplings at their Flushing location before, and they’ve always been excellent — flavorful, juicy, and perfectly steamed. At this location, though, they were still good but not quite as impressive as the original. The wonton soup was decent, but nothing special. The standout here is definitely their in-house chili oil — super spicy, aromatic, and full of flavor. If you visit, don’t skip it. Overall, a solid stop for dumpling lovers, though the Flushing branch still reigns supreme.

The restaurant's ambiance and decor are truly inviting, providing a pleasant setting for a meal. Every dish presented was prepared with great care, showcasing fresh ingredients and delightful flavors. The presentation of each plate was artistic and added to the overall dining experience. The automated vendor option provided a convenient and efficient way to order. Overall, the restaurant offered a well-rounded and enjoyable experience.

Google
Nan Xiang Express: Dumplings That Deliver Nan Xiang Express is a fantastic stop for anyone craving authentic and delicious Shanghainese cuisine, but their dumplings are the true star of the show. Specifically, their famous soup dumplings (xiao long bao) are a must-try. The delicate, thin wrappers manage to perfectly encase a savory filling and a burst of flavorful, piping-hot broth—a truly satisfying bite. Beyond the signature soup dumplings, their other varieties like the pan-fried pork dumplings are equally excellent, offering a crispy bottom and a tender, juicy filling. The quality, freshness, and authentic taste make Nan Xiang Express a top-tier choice for dumpling lovers. While the "Express" format means it’s fast and convenient, the rich flavors certainly don't feel rushed. It's a taste experience that will absolutely have you planning your next order.

Google
Food is amazing! The cucumber salad is to die for. So fresh and flavorful! Would come back just for the cucumbers. The soup dumplings are pretty good too, each bite exploding with hot pork soup. It’s a self service place and food comes out quickly. It’s a small cozy restaurant, limited seating.

Google
Beautiful braised beef noodle soup and drinks!!! Super tasty dish and it's always my favourite Chinese dish for a hearty meal ♥️ Thank you so much ~ friendly service and easy to find on Google Maps. 🙂

Google
Saw this while walking around and it was soooo delicious. Easy to order and quick to get. The crab + pork soup dumplings were so good. 10/10!

Google
These dumplings are absolutely fantastic, especially the spicy dumplings served with peanut sauce! Each bite is bursting with flavor, and the spicy kick perfectly complements the savory filling. The prices are reasonable too, making it an excellent spot to enjoy delicious, high-quality dumplings without breaking the bank. If you're looking for a satisfying and flavorful dumpling experience, this is definitely the place to go!

Yelp
Very good food and amazing service and the ambiance is very calming. You have to come here

Yelp
I've been hunting for good soup dumplings in Brooklyn, and Nan Xiang Express in Williamsburg is probably the closest I've gotten without trekking all the way to Flushing. The soup dumplings are the star here -- when they're fresh out of the steamer, the broth is flavorful and comforting, and the skin has just the right amount of chew. (Pro tip: eat them hot. They lose their magic if you let them sit.) I also loved the pan‑fried pork buns -- crispy bottoms, juicy inside, basically everything you want in a bun. The cucumber salad with garlic was refreshing and balanced out the richness of everything else. The space itself has this cozy backyard vibe that feels way more relaxed than most dumpling spots I've been to. It wasn't too crowded when I went, which made it an easy place to actually sit down and enjoy the food. Service is fast and friendly -- very "order at the counter but we'll take care of you" energy.

Yelp
Came here on the weekend for lunch with a large group so they seated us in their "indoor" backyard area which was really cute. It was not busy at all when we were there, but I assume most people got food to go. It's especially convenient with the kiosk in the front to order. Food: - Pork Soup Dumplings - Spicy Beef Soup Dumplings: I usually order pork so this was interesting to try. It's not too spicy but does have a kick. - Crispy Bottom Buns with pork filling: dough to filling ratio could be better. - Wonton in Spicy Peanut Sauce - Cucumber Salad with Garlic Vinaigrette: surprisingly good! - Shanghai Stir-fried Noodles with Pork - Nan Xiang Fried Rice: Personally didn't care for this, but I know some people NEED to have rice with their meals. I really wanted to try their Spicy Beef Tendon & Tripe Salad, but I did not see it on their menu in person. Overall, this place is very solid for a fast casual restaurant.

Yelp
the soup dumplings were... ok. nothing to write home about. the pork chop soup noodle was pretty bad. noodle was standard commodity noodle broth was almost just water pork chop was over cooked and the batter was not very good.. everything was under seasoned. dude working the desk barely talked to anyone or any of the delivery dude and just watched video on his phone most of the time.. this is equivalent to a typical, BAD street food shop in china, how the hell people are giving this place anything north of 3 star is.. beyond me. unless they are trying to get the discount from leaving good review.

Yelp
Very good quality dumplings for the price. Food took about 10 min. Restaurant is clean.

Yelp
I wanted some Shanghai noodles so badly and stumbled across Nan Xiang Express. I didn't realize it was a chain restaurant until one of my orders was accidentally sent to Downtown Brooklyn. I ordered so much food on Ubereats before arriving to pick it up. I didn't realize I'd get such a large amount of food. I spent $49 total and it was worth every penny. Soup dumplings were so good and juicy. I ate it at home with my sister and it didn't disappoint. She loved all of the food as well. They even gave us the adorable soup spoons and wooden chop-sticks. The pork noodles were Devine. Honestly it filled me up so fast because it came with such a large amount. The Bokchoy inside the noodles were cooked perfectly and so was the pork. Chefs kiss! I barely had time to devour the other items I purchased. My all time favorite was the beef scallion pancakes. My goodness the beef with sauce, veggie crunch and crispiness of the pancakes were phenomenal, seriously 10/10 I also had the pork Bao buns fried at the bottom, it was so delicious and poofy just as I expected it to be with the small bottom crunch adding to the texture. The chili oil is not too spicy and packed the perfect heat paired with all my food. I really loved everything and will be coming back often. PS- The Passionfruit lime tea is DELICIOUS

Yelp
I love their beef noodle soup and dumplings. Fast casual service. Clean inside. Affordable food.

Yelp
So good! I always come here for the dumplings , super flavorful and delicious. Another go to is the spicy wontons!
google avatar

Brandon C.

Yelp
was in the area and wanted good snack. got the spicy pork dumplings with soup and wonton soup. both were delightful. dumplings were darker than i am used to but the broth was super rich and savory. highly recommend. the wonton soup tastes like home. and the wontons themselves were pretty good too. would definitely visit if in the area (was shopping nearby) cute little shop with good seating and pricing was reasonable. workers were very nice and helpful as well

Yelp
Food service was fast and ready. Drinks are sweet. Ask for 50% sweet if you don't like your drink too sweet. The summer combos are a great deal. The soup dumplings were really good all around. The dumpling skin was nice and soft. You could tell it was freshly made. The cucumber salad was so tasty, had a perfect crunch with a hint of garlic. The braised beef was nice and tender with a generous amount. The noodles however were mediocre. The soup was flavorful but too oily. The back room is a whole vibe with the ambiance.

Yelp
Welcome to New York City, it's time to get into some great eating! So on tap for dinner this time around came a rather unexpected find on my Yelp map! So last time, I was able to make a reservation to another restaurant in Brooklyn before going to dance. This time however, I was checking into my hotel at 7:30, so I needed something a bit quicker but still exceptional dining as I would only have two hours to even get ready to go to the Avant Gardner. Enter Nan Xiang Express, a soup dumpling joint in Williamsburg that apparently has a menu item that is Michelin-worthy. Yep! I had actually read somewhere that the Pork Soup Dumplings are so good that they are worthy of a Michelin star! Well then, I had to try them out, and I did that in the simplest way possible. By ordering the combo that comes along with it! So in addition to the dumplings, two veggie spring rolls and a soy milk (hot or iced) comes along in the meal. I opted take-out so I could just eat at the Pod (the hotel I was staying at this time around). I chose the cold soy milk because I felt like for soy milk cold would be a better fit. Before I got my order and left though, I decided to take pictures of the interior because it was quite fascinating for how small this place was. If you choose to stay in, you can find a tutorial on the wall on how to eat soup dumplings. Of course, I had to just figure it out on my own (more on that in a bit). They do have a backroom you can take your food to if you wanna eat there, and the garden theme is next level stuff. Okay, so back at the Pod, it's time to eat! I'm gonna start by saying that the soy milk was actually really good to have, and soy milk isn't quite what my first choice of milk would be if we're being honest. It helps cool off some of the spicier dipping sauces you are given like the chili oil. And it was tasty. The spring rolls were another hit, and the sauce it came with brought it out even more. The pastry was crispy and delightful. A win in every sense of the word. Now we move on to the dumplings, and for these, you're given a spoon to hold your dumpling in and a pair of chopsticks. I was a total pro at eating with chopsticks, and by total pro, I mean that I completely fail at it. If the chopstick police saw me eating my dumplings the way I did, I would be locked up with the key thrown away and eaten by a tiger. But boy oh boy was it worth it! You get soy sauce and the chili oil to dump the dumplings into, and the soup inside is really good. An herbal symphony dancing in your taste buds like it's the last night of its life! The pork was succulent, and the way it was steamed when it was made makes the dish a heaven on earth! And yeah, these dumplings made me thankful my hotel had a lounge area because eating them in my booked room would have gone terribly! Seriously, if are in Williamsburg and want some Dim Sum, give this place a try! It rules!

Yelp
A must-visit for anyone craving authentic and perfectly crafted soup dumplings. Their dumplings live up to the hype - the thin, delicate wrappers hold light broth and filling that's hard to get right. The restaurant itself is spotless with a clean and inviting interior. Bonus tip: for soup dumpling newbies, there's a helpful poster inside showing you how to eat them step by step - super handy. The staff is friendly and efficient, ensuring a smooth dining experience. If you're in the area, this is a spot you can't miss! -AT

Yelp
Excellent service and great food. The passion fruit and lime green tea is a must try.

Yelp
Clean little place in Williamsburg for your soup dumpling cravings. The cashier in the front was helpful and guided me in my indecisiveness. I ended up getting the crab & pork soup dumplings and the beef scallion pancake. They both did not disappoint! Prices are reasonable as well. Perfect lunch spot or even for dinner if you're not looking for something fancy!

Yelp
Food was great, sserivce was excellent. The beef noodle soupe was very fragrant and tasted super authentic. Came here for a late night snack and it hit the perfect spot
google avatar

Yelp
Opens very late! Their iced soy milk is great, super refreshing. They have a self serve kiosk where you can place your own order too. Dumplings are delicious and very fairly priced.

Yelp
Can your chains set you free? I'm not sure. I don't know you. But Nan Xiang has several locations throughout the city, and I'm always free to eat here. Love the shredded beef and pepper noodles. And the dumplings. The buns are good too! Express interest Available here and there Or everywhere
google avatar

Sydney L.

Yelp
I had no idea this was connected to the actual Nan Xiang xiao long bao but damn those dumps and the beef noodle soup are so flavorful! I will be back :)
google avatar

Megan W.

Yelp
This location is not very busy, we easily found a table for four in the back. We each ordered a drink and several plates of food. Unfortunately, none of them were very impressive. I think the best was, surprisingly, the four happiness sponge tofu. The fried rice was something you can easily make at home. The braised beef noodle soup was tasty, but an awfully small portion. Everything else like cucumber salad, scallion pancakes, dumplings, etc. are nothing special compared to other Chinese restaurants. The fruit teas are pretty good though! Everything also comes in takeout containers, which is wasteful for parties that dine in.
google avatar

Samantha W.

Yelp
A great spot for some comfort food. I got combo A, which came with XLB, Chinese soy milk, and scallion noodles. Three of my literal favorites. Everything was tasty, and I think the value of the meal is exceptional. Will definitely be back!
google avatar

Christopher X.

Yelp
5 stars. Food is good, decent price, came out quick, cold soy milk good, indoor seating, quick service
google avatar

Karen A.

Yelp
Absolutely obsessed with Nan Xiang Express! They bring you the same top-quality dumplings as their Michelin-recommended sister brand, Nan Xiang Xiao Long Bao. Affordable, high-quality soup dumplings with lightning-fast, friendly service? Yes, please! We tried the signature pork soup dumplings, and they were an absolute taste of heaven. 10/10! Every bite of every dish was amazing located right in Brooklyn. If only I lived next door, I'd be here every day.

Steven C.

Yelp
Stopped by Nan Xiang Express for a quick bite and left totally satisfied. The xiao long bao here is legit--super flavorful broth, thin but sturdy skin, and a clean pork filling that hits all the right notes. You can tell they've kept the quality from the original Flushing spot. I also got the braised beef noodle soup and it was unexpectedly great. The broth was rich and savory without being too oily, and the beef was tender with just the right amount of fat. Noodles had a nice bounce too. Don't skip the soy milk--it's subtly sweet, really fresh, and balances everything out. Perfect with the dumplings if you want something other than tea.
google avatar

Frank P.

Yelp
Honestly shocked this place has such high reviews. The dumplings were incredibly disappointing and we tried just about every kind of variety they had. It's basically like dumpling fast food (I also noticed it's a chain and if you look at its other locations the ratings are lower too). The highlight were the pan fried pork buns and the steamed broccoli... The XLB lacked flavor and something tasted off about the beef dumplings especially (had to throw them out after only eating half of them, which I forced down as I hate wasting food). It's also not super cheap either for an "express" so you're not getting much bang for your buck nor is it good food. Would seriously recommend going to other dumpling spots in the general vicinity as this is not it...
google avatar

Patty C.

Yelp
So yummy. Fresh, delicious food that makes it easy to dine in or take it to go The chicken soup dumpling is SO good, it was my fav soup dumplings Cucumber salad was really refreshing. The been scallion pancake is a fan favorite. The spicy peanut wontons, must get! That sauce is delish
google avatar

Shay N.

Yelp
I got delivery from them recently. $62 for a melon drink, pork soup, dumplings, chicken soup dumplings, and vegetable noodles. Not awful, but not great for the price and the amount of food. What I will say is the food was consistent throughout. What I will not say is that it was... Exciting. The food was just terribly boring. I don't mean to put this in a negative fashion but, it feels like Chinese for people who don't like Chinese. Everything lacked flavor it felt like I was streamed frozen dumplings and really dry noodles. There was no Ginger, no scallion, no heat, no nothing. it was probably the most mildly flavored food I've had in a wild. I don't know that really isn't the experience. I'm looking for when I go out for Chinese food. I want some thing that packs a punch. Whether that be salty, spicy, sweet, or umami. I will say that their packaging top notch. Everything came perfectly packaged, even with travel. Loved the soup spoon chopstick combo pack. I will probably not be ordering again, but I gave it a chance and that's what's important.

Christina K.

Yelp
The food was really good and service !! Def recommend. I had such a great time there.

Yelp
Fire dumplings. Enjoyed the clean atmosphere and the wide variety of dumplings. We had the crispy bottom pork dumplings and the crab meat and pork dumplings
google avatar

Jimmy S.

Yelp
Good soup dumplings--for a chain. But the worker in the back was blasting video games on his phone like it was his living room. They offer a free drink if you leave a review, but then demand it has to be five stars--something the sign conveniently leaves out. Of course, anyone can edit their review afterward (like I'm doing now), so the whole review-farming scheme ends up both pointless and insulting. It's hard to suffer fools quietly.

Isabella M.

Yelp
Best soup dumplings in the neighborhood . They have a cute outdoor area that's makes dining in with a kid. Dumplings come out quickly, so it's an overall win for us.

Yelp
Great and convenient location! Looks very clean and quick with food order. There's plenty of space for small and large groups.

Yelp
The food was amazing and the noodles were good and crunchy. Food came out fast. Garlic broccoli was a surprise hit.
google avatar

Grace L.

Yelp
I wouldn't say the food is amazing, but it definitely hits the spot in a pinch and I'm glad they opened one up in Williamsburg. There's a few tables inside and outside, with tableside chili oil, vinegar, and soy sauce so it's definitely preferable to eat there instead of take out. Everything they serve is given in disposable containers though. You can order at the counter or at a kiosk in the front. Pan fried crabmeat and pork dumpling ($10) - I wish these were crispier on the bottom, for a proper pan-fried bottom. It's juicy on the inside, but doesn't have any soup. Didn't taste the crabmeat on this either since I think the pork overpowered it but the filling was nicely seasoned and tasty. Dough was pretty thick compared to the meat. Great snack / light meal though!
google avatar

Yelp
Had dinner here last night after working out and Loved the soup dumplings, hot sour and vegetables rice cakes

Yelp
Really good fresh food would definitely recommend beef soup was amazing wonderful place to bring a group.

Yelp
Good food! I love pork buns and although these are not the best I've ever had they were still very tasty. Short wait for a decent product. Very friendly service. Cute indoor interior with murals on the windows. 4/5 stars!

Yelp
This place was great! We stumbled upon it on our way out of town and wanted a quick pick up to eat on the ride back. We ordered some soup dumplings and a tea. It took all of 10-15 mins, enough for us to go to the dispensary next door and come back. They provided us with everything we needed to enjoy our soup dumplings. Chili sauce, vinegar sauce, soup spoons and chopsticks. The flavors are absolutely delicious! Highly recommend!!!
google avatar

J S.

Yelp
Both the soup dumplings and fried ones are very delicious! Place is clean and well managed.

Yelp
Came here because I was craving some dim sum food on a Sunday afternoon! The beef fried rice cake and the signature soup dumplings were so good and was the perfect portion for two people. We also ordered an extra dish of the beef tendon and tripe in spicy sauce, but the dish was cold. I think it was meant to be eaten cold, but I didn't like it. I would have preferred if the dish was hot. The portions were big since the 3 dishes were too much for two people, so we ended up taking the beef tendon/tripe home for leftovers the next day, which tasted a lot better with rice and heated up. Service at this place was a bit slow. We ordered on the screen, but waited quite a while to get the food. It's pretty much self service, there's a water pitcher in the back that you have to get yourself, and when you are done with the meal, you need to toss the food/containers in the trash and put the tray away. I didn't appreciate that this place used to-go containers and utensils, even if you are dining in. Overall, I did really like their soup dumplings and beef rice cakes, so I'd definitely come back for those items again if I'm in the area :)
google avatar

Lisa Z.

Yelp
I've come back to this place many times and they have such yummy items especially dim sum. Would recommend to anyone looking for a casual spot to eat some noms. I've had a lot of dim sum in my life and can say this place's Shanghai siu mai is one of the best I've had. The soy milk was also incredible. I had some to go when I was sick and it really helped improve my spirits. I come here every month now! It's a chill enough place I can go alone or with friends. The people working here have always been nice (no complaints from me). Haven't been this excited about a spot in a while. Haven't needed to go to Chinatown when there's this spot nearby.
google avatar

Scott S.

Yelp
So went here yesterday since I needed soft food to eat. I was greeted by a nice gentleman behind the counter who helped take my order then I sat a table . He gave me the iced soybean milk very quickly and only a few minutes later already got the chicken fried rice cake that was cooked very well both the chicken and the soft rice cakes! Soup dumplings followed. I don't really like pork so it was nice to have a chicken option both the dumpling skin and the inside was bomb. It was everything I wanted in the moment. I will definitely return here the next time I have a craving and it's great value for money!
google avatar

Matteo R.

Yelp
Nice, tasty addition to the neighborhood, as the world-famous xiao long bao from nan Xiang make their way to Williamsburg, making it a lot easier for Brooklynites such as myself to taste delicious soup dumplings this side of Flushing. Occupying the space of sow-defunct (and sorely missed!) Dim Sum Bar, this is mostly a takeout space, although there are 3-4 small tables inside, and a couple more in the small outdoor space at the back. The decor modern/minimalist, what you expect for a takeout. Service is courteous and the dishes are prepared fast. We enjoyed all the dishes we tried: the crab and pork soup dumplings of course, but also the scallion pancake with sliced beef, the four happiness sponge tofu, and the shrimp fried udon. As this is mostly a takeout business, most dishes are served in takeout containers. This means that, if you dine in, you will produce an inordinate amount of plastic. As there is only one trash can, it's unclear whether any of the plastic used here is actually recycled. I certainly hope so.

Cherylin L.

Yelp
Savoring every delightful bite of Shanghainese comfort food at Nan xiang express From the savory soup dumplings , crispy bottom buns, stir fry noodles, each dish are so flavorful.
google avatar

Chin T.

Yelp
The staffs were friendly. Be sure to check in via Yelp to get free iced soy milk or lime green tea. The lime green tea was very refreshing. We ordered two soup dumplings crab and pork both are delicious! You can add vinegar, soy sauce and/or chili paste to your dipping sauce. The scallion pancake and chicken rice cakes are another good option. The rice cakes have a bit more sauce therefore, it was salty. However, you can get refill unlimited water at the back. You can dine in or take out. You can order your food via the kiosk by the door. There's indoor and outdoor seating. Would recommend coming here again!

Yelp
We love this place, delicious food, great service, place is so clean, as a Chinese, it is super authentic

Yelp
This would be my 4th time coming to this location and I totally forgot to add them a review! This is a must try if you are in the neighborhood! Everything on the menu is bursting with flavor literally! Especially if you order their spicy beef soup dumplings. The people are warm and attentive- and it's quiet which always a plus. Definitely worth coming in every time.
