My friend and I went to the Capitol Theater, for the first time, yesterday, to see Roberta Flack and we came away with mixed feelings, regarding this venue.
First off, a little back story. My friend is blind. She also happens to be a nurse practitioner, with two degrees, s she isn't stupid, she just can't see.
I am a disabled vet, who though can walk, can not do so for long distances.
Due to our "situation" we tend to inquire ahead regarding disabled parking, access, etc as to avoid any problems or confusion.
Imagine our surprise when we were told that there was no specific handicap parking, and that we could park somewhere "in back of the building".
Any attempt to get the lady on the phone to elaborate or give us more specifics was met with a "just go to the back and park, and then walk around to the front.
Not good, but we decided to press on.
As we wanted to avoid traffic and give ourselves plenty of time to find our way, we arrived at the venue around 4:30pm, with the intention of parking, grabbing a bite to eat, and then see the show.
Imagine my surprise when I found that the back of the building consisted of a bunch of reserved parking spaces, reserved for local businesses and the utility company, each with tow away signs.
We circled the block 4-5 times looking for these magical parking spots we were told about, but there were none to be found.
Finally, at 5pm we decided to bite the bullet and park in the public utilities lot as they close at 5 and I figured we wouldn't be towed.
We managed to make it to the front of the venue, and went across the street, for a bite to eat, returning at around 6:30pm to pick up our tickets, at Will Call.
The doors finally opened around 6:40 and we were ushered inside where we were told we had to wait until 7:00p before we could go to our seats.
Everyone was instructed to wait in the lobby until then. (in other words, buy some drinks and buy a raffle ticket)..
There was only a single 2 person bench available, and my friend and another lady sat, while the rest of us (some quite old /or disabled) were left to our own devices.
As we had a box seat, we were taken up by elevator, where an usher showed us to our seats.
Now the box was pretty nice, and the chairs comfy enough, but I found the seating and interior to be quite lacking and the seats, themselves, to be rather cheap looking. I guess I expected more ornate decorations, or something, but all in all, not bad.
I will say the theater is fairly intimate, and there didn't appear to be a bad seat in the house...our seats were quite nice, indeed.
The acoustics were wonderful, and really captured the nuances of Ms Flack's voice, as well as the band.
Now comes my biggest gripe.
After the show, we attempted to wait until the crowd thinned out due to my friend's blindness and my disability making it harder for us to maneuver, but we were repeatedly rushed and told we had to leave, NOW.
Mind you, the show hadn't ended 10 minutes prior when we were told we had to leave.
I tried to explain why we were waiting, and I was told we could wait downstairs, and that they were waiting for us at the elevator.
I asked if my friend could at least use the rest room first and was met with a grunt.
We used it anyway, and then fought the remaining crowd, in order to leave.
A VERY disappointing end to an otherwise pleasant evening.
Yes, the place looks nice, in the lobby, and most of the staff were friendly, but it is obvious that they either lack the training or the concern regarding disabled people.
That coupled with us being treated like cattle and rushed to the exits, is just ridiculous.
We are both on a fixed income and going to shows is a luxury, and at $85 each (plus added fees) we would hope to be able to expect to be treated at least politely, and professionally, if anything else.
I rate the building and most of the ushers/staff a 4, but the gentleman that was being rude, rushing us out, the poor parking situation, and general apathy towards the handicapped deserves a 2 (at best), so I will rate the venue a 3.
If we return, I will post a follow up review.
