This New Jamaican Restaurant Is St. Paul’s Best-Kept Secret | Eater Twin Cities

"In a tidy building on Rice Street that replaced a longtime local spot, Chef Okkoy Graham runs a succinct menu he perfected over more than two years, often arriving at 4:30 a.m. to do all the cooking himself. The menu includes braised oxtail stew—marinated for a day or two, quickly seared, then simmered with spices and vegetables until the meat is succulent and clings gently to the vertebrae—served with a soft, tempered cabbage slaw; whole red snapper escovitch fish, shallow-fried until the skin crisps into a fatty, silvery sheath and topped with a vinegar sauce of sliced peppers and onions that cuts the fish’s natural fattiness; jerk chicken and pork; country-style curry goat; festival dumplings; beef patties; and a vegan ital stew of root vegetables in a buttery-feeling coconut broth with little globules of fat floating to the top. Graham learned to cook from his mother in Montego Bay, Jamaica, and he emphasizes cultural context—offering ital stew as a reflection of Rastafari food traditions—and says he’s received a warm welcome on Rice Street. Find it at 969 Rice Street, open Wednesday, Thursday and Sunday 11 a.m.–8 p.m., and Friday and Saturday 11 a.m.–9 p.m." - Justine Jones

Google
Popped in on new years eve to try thr double plate and enjoyed my experience all around. The portions were fair compared to the price, the food was packed w flavor and the service top tier. I got curry goat, brown stew, rice and peas, cabbage and plantains for $28 + tax. The goat was tender and the brown stew chicken was falling off the bone - Def making this a regular spot!

Food was decent. Food was fresh and I didn’t have a long wait time which is appreciated! The restaurant was clean, enough tables and they had plenty of outlets. The beef patty was great $8.5 each and I’d definitely get it again. I got the oxtails about 4-5 oxtails for my meal and no drink. They don’t have free water but I appreciate they offered outdoor seating. I felt like I needed some black pepper but didn’t see any. I’d go back to try the jerk chicken.

Google
1st time trying this place. It was clean, great customer service, and the food was BOMB! We started eating it in the car. 😂 (couldn't resist the smell) We ordered Curry chicken, Jerk chicken, beef patties, and drinks. Everything was fire! It was a lot of food, mine lasted two days. We’ll be returning to try other items. Definitely recommend!

Google
Even with the electrical issues earlier in the day; staff was friendly and unbothered. The menu screen was not working and he was still happy to recite to the customers waiting. The lobby was busy: some checking their order, others waiting patiently for their food and us He had me at oxtails...say less. The meal came with plantains, cabbage and peas and rice. Next time I will ask for gravy on my rice, not because it was dry. Because the oxtail gravy was delicious. Eating meat is a privilege that I dont often indulge in. So this was an extra treat, two of the bones were fatty and barely any meat. Also, were a bit chewier than what I'm accustomed to. Cant say I would order them agai . However, the flavor was delicious. The sides were all fresh. I think the cabbage was my favorite. One thing I appreciate is that Nanny's serves vegetarian patties (beef/chicken) too. There was more bread than filling, I'm not sure what the stuffing was..maybe spinach. Doesn't even matter; the spices and seasonings were tasty!! Plumping them up more would be my only feddback. Will be back for sure Bathroom was clean too. (the little things matter).

Google
This place is glorious. Oxtail stew and plantains are the best I have ever eaten. The work crew is now going to try this pace. 11/30/23 Got some co-workers to order here today, and the food did not disappoint. 12/23/23 I have now ordered from there about 7 times the last month, and it has been great every time. I will definitely miss this place when I leave.

I was driving down Rice Street on the way to a meeting and made a mental note. In my way back I stopped and picked up some lunch. I walked in and it just smelled incredible! I ordered the curried goat, which i love and it was the best I've had! The fried plantains had flavor. So good. I live way across town, but I will make the trek to eat here again.

Google
This establishment was delicious. Came here on a super hot Friday and having their spicy jerk sauce was probably not a good idea but it was delicious and flavorful. The chicken and ox tail were so tender. Their spicy chicken wings really hit the spot too. I have to come back,

Yelp
The food is hot (temp and spice) and delicious. I had the curry goat. It comes with a side of rice and peas, steamed cabbage (very good) and plantains. Everything was delicious. The goat was tender and seasoned perfectly. Note: if you have never tried goat it usually still has some small bones. My wife had the jerk chicken with the same sides. Again the chicken was seasoned very well and was super tender. My sil had the habanero mango wings. Again delish and a real nice heat. There was one person working and there were quite a few to go orders to fill so our order took a few minutes but it would have been worth waiting much longer. The food is that good. There are maybe a dozen seats in this place but we were the only eat in customers so there was plenty of room. Seriously don't miss this place it is a gem.

Yelp
We found this little gym in Saint Paul, and it was very very good Jamaican food. I always get the jerk chicken and it did not disappoint. The perfect amount of spice I would definitely recommend it.

Yelp
OMG I didn't expect to get what I ordered in such short time and it tasted this good. I ordered the two protein mix with three side. Oxtails were really good just wish there was more meat. The jerk chicken literally fell off the bone when I picked it up that's how tender it was. The cabbage was equally satisfying. The speed of service was astounding and with excellent quality. Customer service was very good. The restaurant is a nice little establishment on Rice St in St. Paul, that has earned themselves a new customer.

Yelp
Great service, food hands down is the best Jamaican food place in Saint Paul. I got the goat meat never had it before now and I'm ready to tell everybody about it and the price is worth the meal. we will be back ..

Yelp
Say Flavor 3 times back to back to make it real. Amazing flavor will definitely return. Theres a difference hospitality with people from the Caribbean and the south, and they have it. The restaurant is a little small, but nice. But in all really good.

Yelp
My girlfriend and I stumbled across this place looking for somewhere else and were pleasantly surprised. Hands down the best Jamaican food in the twin cities! I was honestly skeptical because I haven't had decent Jamaican food in the cities yet, but the second I bit into the beef patty I knew this was the real deal! We ordered the mix and match meal with oxtails and curry goat. The meat came with healthy amounts of rice and peas, cabbage, and 2 plantains. I wish there were more plantains but I think that's my only critique. We also ordered an order of 6 jerk wings. The food was amazing! Nothing like I've ever had before. There was so much flavor and it was everything I have been searching for. The oxtails may have been my favorite but dang was the goat fire! We chatted it up with the owner for a bit and learned he bought the restaurant in July and rebranded as nanny's. He was so dope and personable. Talked all about his journey and we felt like we were in the home of a close friend. Two days later my girlfriend and I got food to go again. No shame!! We need to protect this place at all costs

Yelp
I ordered both the oxtails with rice and curry chicken with rice. The food is absolutely delicious. She has excellent customer service. Very kind lady. I recommend coming here if you want that true taste of authentic Jamaican food. I went back to try the Brown Stew Chicken and it was delicious as well!

Yelp
Got the oxtail and it's fire seasoned Really well cabbage is Bomb all goes good together..

Glenroy A.

Yelp
I love the food here my family's from Antigua it feels good to get some home cooked food here in MN only issue I have is the consistency of serving sizes I always get a combination plate this young girl that works there always gives me the littlest amounts I spoke to a family member who experiences the same thing with her I wonder how many other people she is doing this to smh

ahmed m.

Yelp
Awesome place and the food always hits the spot. Wish they use better plates for there carry out to go orders, plates seems to be torn out by the time I get home b/c of all that hot steam and becomes watery but other then that the food is bomb.

Yelp
The best Jamaican food in town!! The oxtails and goat is a to die for. I had Jamaican food in Virgin Islands a few years ago and I couldn't find nothing near home that would compare. But!! This place is!

Tasheika H.

Yelp
We just moved here from Oklahoma. This place did not disappoint. We will be back. Everything was rich with with flavor and customer service was A+

Dwquita N.

Yelp
I am initially from Chicago and most our food is phenomenal and flavorful so I was apprehensive on trying jerk from minnesota to begin with. I won't go into a bashing rant because the owner was great and others seem to like this food. I will just say I drove from coon rapids due to the reviews and I personally was disappointed. My hubby had the oxtails and I had jerk chicken and it just wasn't up to par with what we have had. Flavors and spices were definitely lacking. Either some of the ppl leaving reviews haven't had very many good jerk experiences from other places or maybe we just visited on an off day. Either way I doubt we would return. We spent $50 and I didn't even finish mine. #definitelySad

Yelp
Oxtail and chicken wings cooked to perfection Usual sides except these are excellent cabbage, rice , plantains . The chef here is from Jamaica and well known in Minnesota food scene

Yelp
Definitely a must stop for Caribbean type of foods. Although the menu is not long but they are no strangers to folks who like Jamaican food. We have a combo of oxtail and jerk chicken. Man, it's so good. Will definitely come again. Park your car behind the building; Mama's and Nanny's share the parking area.

Yelp
Neva again!!! NEVA again! Lol. This place is a JOKE!! The girl working the counter was mad rude. My son and I had never been there before so I asked a her a question about the menu and she was condescending with a poor attitude. The food was WAAAAAAAAAAY overpriced, you get VERY little, and WORST OF ALL, it's not even good!!! I'm not Jamaican but how is my Jamaican food blowing theirs out the water?! The meat was super tough, I had an oxtails and curried goat combo. The patties are DRY af!! For my son and I to get two patties and two meals was over $80!!!!! NOT EVEN CLOSE TO WORTH IT!!! I will never return, worst Jamaican food in Minnesota. Hands down. Lol. Save your money, stomach, and time. TRASH!!! And that's exactly where our food ended up!!

K S.

Yelp
Food was ok but the price was ridiculously expensive. Was so excited to finally have a Jamaican restaurant in town but will not be returning.

Yelp
I was blown away with the flavors. My friends and I saw some reviews of this place and decided to try it out. It's a tiny spot on Rice Street and WOW, the flavors were a melody in my mouth. We split the veggie patties, chicken wings, jerk chicken, and oxtail. So many flavors of spicy, sweet, tangy, sour. Not only was the food delicious but the owner and chef made a point to come to our table and chat with us for several minutes during a busy dinner rush to see how we were doing. Such great hospitality. I actually looked and my friends and said, "this is the first food I've tasted in a while that actually feels like it's made with love." Will definitely be back for more wings and next time will try the curries!

Yelp
Oxtail was amazing with the pieces of potatoes. I loved the salad and my favorite part the plantains. Mmm can't wait to go back

Yelp
I've tried out many different Jamaican restaurants in the twin cities and have yet to find one that is as good as Nanny's. A true authentic restaurant with amazing flavors and fast service. I've had the oxtail a few times and each time I'm amazed at the consistency of how Good it tastes and how the meat just falls apart so tenderly. Their Food is definitely made with love and I highly recommend it to anyone hoping to try an authentic Jamaican dish. I wish they were closer to where I live but I definitely plan on continuing to come here when I'm craving some Jamaican flavor.

Tzone A.

Yelp
Being a Jamaican born and raised living in America as a truck driver I traveled to lots of different cities and states jamaican food is always my first opinion but it hard to find good Jamaican food and trust me I think this is definitely in my top two or three when I'm not in south Florida where I currently live the flavor and spices is perfect very surprising to find such good taste in Minnesota WOW

Maiysha G.

Yelp
I ordered the stew chicken and oxtail plate. I was afraid that I would get less oxtail but I ordered it anyway. Everything was tasty. The plate was huge. I will definitely order again.

Jeff J.

Yelp
Went as a group for work. It was awesome. Jerk chicken is bone in, so it's very tender and flavorful. Jerk sauce was really good. Not as hot as you'll get at a place where they try to hide the food quality behind the heat. This means they rely on great flavor to wow you, which they do. The cook is the owner, and the man knows his way around the kitchen. The menu is straightforward and there's something for everyone. Can't wait to go back!

Yelp
Best wings (mango habanero) in the twin cities. Jerk chicken fell off of the bone. Steamed cabbage, rice and beans, plantains . . . ALL excellently seasoned and the portion sizes were perfect. Don't skip the sauce, as it's a perfectly delightful blend of Jamaican sweet & heat. Thank you for the memorable meal and the warm chat, Chef Graham.

Vanessa A.

Yelp
Definitely the best Caribbean food we've had in the Twin Cities. Don't walk, run to try this new place out

Ge'Nae W.

Yelp
Everything is perfect. I have been multiple times and the food just gets better and better. No complaints. And the manager is so sweet. I got off work at 7:30 made it at 7:45 he made me a plate, hot and fresh, even though they were closing. The best Jamaican restaurant I ever been to! 100/10

John B.

Yelp
We had the jerk chicken and curried goat. Everything was seasoned perfectly, matched with excellent plantain and cabbage, perfect rice and beans. Glad we picked this place for lunch.

Andraya R.

Yelp
Delicious food. We got a order of Oxtails; curry chicken; brown stew chicken and a patty. Finally something different and tasty around here.
