Durham Food Hall Review - City Center - Durham - The Infatuation

"Food halls are perfect for large groups and people with different tastes, and Durham Food Hall is no exception. The half a dozen stalls have you covered for something at any hour, beginning with Old North Meats’ $5 breakfast sandwich, which you should definitely add pastrami to. Lunchtime belongs to Ex-Voto, specifically the hearty crunch wraps packed with roasted chicken thighs and chipotle crema. Grab a wood-fired pizza from Napoli for dinner, especially if you’re in a hurry, and stick around for a drink at Auctioneer Bar. Consider ordering your food to go and enjoying it in the nearby Durham Central Park. photo credit: Anna Barzin" - Eric Ginsburg

If you are like us and enjoy having a couple of dependable local places you can get to quickly and easily, have very good food, great service, efficient and friendly staff; then add this to your list! We were there about two weeks ago and were given a sample of the pumpkin seed pesto sauce…. 🙂🙂. Wonderful. If you live in Durham and are looking for good quality at acceptable prices, you should try this place.

They have no revamped Napoli into a similar but worse pizza joint. Speaking only in the gelato, they have half as many options and the gelato was quite runny. Taste was… alright, I guess, not worth the money. Really disappointing considering how good Napoli was. This seems to have been a significant downgrade.

This place used to be one of the better value pizzas in Durham. They used to have huge pizzas, at about the same price as Toro or Hutchins. But now their pizzas are barely bigger than Toro's. The pizzas used to nearly fill the box, now they're a solid 2-2.5" smaller in diameter. That's like a 30% reduction in size. And you can tell because you used to have half a pizza left over, now I can scarf it down in one meal. Shame. Gonna have to skip buying from here until they fix the proportions... That was all they had going for them

I thought the price was a little steep for how small the pizza was, but the pizza itself was delightful. Very light (not thick, doughy crusts) and everything tasted fresh.

Holy cow this pizza is AMAZING. Was not expecting it to be as good as it was. Fresh ingredients. Fresh mozzarella. I couldn’t get enough. The house salad with their homemade dressing was amazing as well. Full of flavor. Thin crust pizza cooked just right.

Napoli makes a consistently delicious pie with fresh ingredients. The fermented dough that is baked in a wood fire oven give its a nice crisp on the edges. My go to order is: the Parma with a drizzle of honey and a house salad. The house salad is large enough to split in between two adults. It has plenty olives, cucumbers, peppers, and the balsamic vinaigrette is strong enough to even out the feta cheese, but mild enough to compliment the cucumber and cherry tomatoes. Each pie is large enough to split in between two adults. The gelato is good, but it tends to be a little too soft. Flavor is very good. The service is the only reason I have deducted a star, as the staff changes pretty consistently. On evenings and weekends the wait can be 25-30 minutes.

Nice pizza spot in the Durham food Hall, tucked in the corner - the pizzas give an authentic Italian pizza vibe, had the Margherita and fungi , definitely the margherita was the better option, I feel there is still scope for improvement as my absolute favorite in downtown Durham still is pizzeria torro however this will probably count as my second favorite. PS : The offer chilli oil as a a side if you are feeling little more adventurous and want to add some heat !!!

Google
I do not post many reviews unless positive. I think others may want to know. The pizza was burnt. We respectfully alerted the staff of the bitter taste, due to burning, this is why chefs work so hard to brown yet not burn. They stated this is how their pizza is. 6 months ago it was not. Not looking for refund or apology. Just letting others know what to potentially expect. Menu looks great but bitter burnt pizza is what it is.

Yelp
Delicious wood-fired Neapolitan DOP Buffalo Margarita Pizza with a pillowy soft crust - you can't ask for anything better than that! The Neapolitan was truly authentic and among the best pizzas I've had in the U.S. The fresh Buffalo mozzarella cheese was juicy and tender and spread evenly throughout the pizza, so you could enjoy a little bit of cheese in every bite with sweet tomato marinara//pomodoro sauce. The pizza was cooked to perfection with a scrumptious, charred crust and bottom. It took 20 min to get my pizza, so just be patient! If you enjoy Neapolitan pizza, definitely check out Napoli Pizzeria in the food hall!

Yelp
Still loving that mushroom pizza and the hot olive oil. Quick, friendly service, lovely ambience with that wood-fired oven dominating the food prep area. Love this place!

Yelp
Worst salad ever. $12 of lettuce and 1/2 a cherry tomato. Fresh greens were wilty and brown. Asked for no olives, came with them anyway. Asked for it to go, came in an eat in bowl. No one else in line so it wasn't like they were rushed. More like they dont care. Not going back.

Yelp
The crust and baking style/time is not vastly off the mark for Naples-style pizza, but it falls apart with the toppings. My partner accidentally ordered a vegan pizza (the one with tempeh). He didn't mean to do that, but he (and I) aren't inherently anti-vegan cheese, and this could still have been an enjoyable experience if the cheese hadn't been the most disgusting, slick, plasticky, artificial-tasting mess. My partner will finish almost anything, but left this one on the plate, and I wasn't going to touch it either. My funghi pizza was decent, but only decent. It was a little watery/soggy, and they really skimp on the amount of mushrooms. And the sauce for that matter. It's mostly cheese, with a few specks of oregano. It really needed the grind of fresh black and red pepper they offer at the counter.

Yelp
This place was honestly no better than your average pizza place. Upon arrival it seemed that the staff members were made up of a bunch of teens and young adults who were too busy chatting to notice us. The pizza itself was overpriced and none of it blew me away. We did enjoy the Brussel sprouts. We later returned to give the gelato a try even though it did not look very appealing. The price for one small cup was 8$!!! INSANE! The gelato tasted more of custard then anything else and was quite rich. Spend your money elsewhere

Yelp
One of my go to pizza places in Durham. Wish they still had the sausage, onion and pepper pizza but still enjoy all their other pizzas. Ingredients are fresh and good quality along with dough. The service is always great and I forget his name but the chef (kinda tall guy who often works the oven) puts out consistent pizzas that are best in town when he's pushing them. The gelato is amazing here as well! Great ambiance for a food hall and always enjoy going to this location since it's not far from my house. If you are in the Carrboro area try the location there. They have a few more options on the menu that are amazing!!

Yelp
So, oddly enough, although we've ordered gelato here several times we never actually ordered the pizza until recently when meeting friends in the food hall for dinner on a Saturday. We ordered the margherita pizza and took our buzzer to our table. When it buzzed, I collected our pizza. Although the crust was great and had a nice char, I'd have to say the rest of the pizza was okay but not great. We liked the pizza better at a few other nearby places. Portion-wise, it was good for two people. We might try a different pizza next time and see if it's any better.

Yelp
It's been a while since our last visit. I got the same pizza i had last time, the Calabria, but not with the same result. It was spicy and lively last time. This time the honey dominated making it overly sweet and one dimensional. Also, the oven didn't seem to have been heated enough. The pizzas sat inside for quite some time. My wife's Pepperoni was better but neither was quite right. Decent pizza but not even close to worth the prices.

Yelp
Had already been to the Napoli Pizza in Hillsboro and Carrboro, so the expectation was high and this location didn't disappoint! It is located inside the new Durham Food Hall where there are several small restaurants set up like a high-end mall food court. It opened a couple of months ago, but as of this time, you are still unable to sit inside the food hall so it's still take out only. According to their website, they get their flour, olive oil, and tomatoes from Italy and grow their own basil. You can totally tell because when you eat this pizza it tastes like high quality, fresh ingredients. I have been several times and usually get the margherita pizza and sometimes add portobello mushrooms on it. I also pick up the Neapolitan breadsticks which are equally delicious. Can we talk about the homemade gelato now? They offer several flavors in either the 16 oz pint or 8 oz half pint size. I have tried the raspberry, blackberry peach, and the orange blossom. I was initially hesitant of the orange blossom because the only orange flavored ice cream I remember having is 1980's orange New England orange sherbet (I'm dating myself here)! I finally did try it and it was epic! Seriously, on a scale of 1 to 10, this orange blossom gelato was a 12! It was creamy, with high quality ingredients, and just the right amount of orange flavor. You will not be disappointed!

Yelp
My kids and I stood for 25 minutes at the register, with no line, without a single person addressing we were there. This dreadheaded man just cut pizza. Mostly spent time staring into space. I asked 3 times if we could just get a scoop of gelato? That is all we wanted. Twenty-five minutes. Not one person picked up a pizza or got in line to order a pizza. Useless. I am sure there is video of this.

Yelp
Really exceptional pizza and gelato! They use local farms and care about producing quality food. Thank you, delicious!

Yelp
Ugh! So good. I had the Apricot pizza, which tasted like a charcuterie board on a pizza! I loved it. It is a bit pricey $14 but worth it. This particular pizza does not have tomato sauce but does have a lot of mozzarella cheese. What makes this location prime is that it's in a food court, and also the food is packaged perfectly for dinning outside. Then, you can venture back for their delicious gelato. The salted pistachio and chocolate were fantastic! Not only is their gelato creamy but packed with flavor.

Yelp
One of my favorite pizza places in Durham! I like their vegan options! The dough/crust is delicious!

Yelp
Love this place! Super friendly staff (the whole Durham Food Hall community is very friendly) and really great pizza. I always get their margherita pizza--pretty simple and basic but so delicious and perfectly made each time. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, they only offer pickup options and recommend you get there according to the time designated on Durham Food Hall's online ordering website. This ensures you get the pizza as fresh out of the oven as possible, and trust me it's so much better!! I don't like to play favorites so I'll say this place is in my top 2 or 3 pizza spots located in the Triangle, and I grew up here for 18 years and moved back a year ago. I'd love to venture out to their original restaurant in Carrboro one day--I'm sure it will be even better!

Yelp
Restaurant in the Durham Foodhall. They have gelato too! I liked their dark chocolate gelato because it wasn't too sweet. Their haw river fungi pizza was good but I prefer more mushroom/different types of mushrooms to bring out that umami flavor.

Yelp
Terrible customer service overpriced and the people that works there specially the manager is a miserable human being. Pizza was bad and soggy. Was there with 2 kids and he can't just be more annoyed by us. Don't waste your time and money there.

Yelp
This was the worst pizza I have ever attempted to eat. The Margherita Pizza was soggy and under cooked - I literally bit into raw dough. I also had to use multiple napkins to try and sop up the water that was sitting on top of the pizza. There was barely any sauce or basil, both of which are key ingredients for a Margherita Pizza. I wish I would have asked for a refund. I would never eat here again. You would be better off saving your money and ordering Dominos.

Yelp
I ordered the Apricot pizza and really enjoyed how unique it was. If you prefer red sauce, this isn't the pizza for you as the base is apricot glaze. It was the perfect mix of sweet from the apricot and savory/ salty from the salami. The crust was great and had that wood-fired crisp and flavor. It's in a great location downtown in the food hall and you can also have it brought across the street to Glass Jug to enjoy with a beer!

Yelp
I was working at the Durham Food Hall late and this place was the only one that was open so I decided to give it a try. There are many vegetarian options but unfortunately, they were out of stock of the haw river fungi pizza, which was the one I really wanted to try. I decided to try the vegan tempeh pizza, and it was not good at all. I've had pizza with vegan cheese before, and it wasn't nearly as weird in texture as the one from Napoli was. My friend tried the Calabria pizza, though, and he said the flavors were very good. This place was also very overpriced, $20 for a pizza!

Yelp
Funghi pizza - 4 stars Delicious when piping hot, right out of the oven. We ordered online and appreciated how they par-baked it and popped it in the oven when we arrived at the counter. I could probably finish 2/3 of this (I'm a relatively small eater), although I'd prefer half with a good side. Guava gelato - 3 stars I was impressed that I could taste the guava flavour, although it was more muted than I would have liked - the creaminess/milkiness predominated, making me feel it was more ice cream than gelato. Ginger gelato - 3.5 stars I love a good ginger ice cream! This was milky as well and tasted more like ginger ice cream, and was milkier and sweeter than I would have liked but the ginger flavour was stronger than that of the guava. Would get it again.

Yelp
I have food allergies to dairy, egg, and tree nuts. I ordered a Vegan Margherita pizza with additional tomato sauce, prosciutto and Calabrian chili oil. The pizza did not have any of the additions, despite paying for them. The pizza itself was poor and bland. I would not recommend going here if you have food allergies or are looking for decent pizza.

Yelp
This review is just of the gelato (have not tried pizza yet although hear very good things). I have half sorbet and half chocolate and it was unfortunately very grainy. I thought the flavor was great for the sorbet but it was hard to enjoy with the texture.

George M.

Yelp
Stopped here first time in town. Staff were indifferent at best. Asked for togo got eat in when I told them it was togo acted like I was an inconvenience. Wish I did eat it there so I could tell them how bad it was so undercooked it was like chewing gum. One of worst pizzas ever like worse then papa John's other places in food hall were very good this place horrible

Dave F.

Yelp
Sorry to inconvenience you by ordering pizza from you. If you don't want to make pizza than close. Otherwise, try not be a total jerk to people. We ordered off of the menu, so it's not as if we were asking for any special treatment.

Yelp
Had the best pizza ever. Picked up the Calabria par cooked with the balsamic mushrooms appetizer and the flavors were amazing. Would highly recommend Napoli in the Durham Food Hall.

Rachel S.

Yelp
I walked in stood at the counter and the two works stood there talking and then said hello to the person behind me and completely ignored me. I was looking forward to ordering something but not after the rude treatment.
