The Best Restaurants in Medford | Eater Boston

"Nappi’s doesn’t have a menu in the strictest sense of the term, but rather a list of ingredients that diners can pair together a la carte. A good bet is any kind of pasta tossed with Nappi’s bolognese. The restaurant — which began as a butcher shop and Italian market before transforming into a sub shop and finally a full-service restaurant — accepts cash only, and it’s BYOB." - Terrence Doyle

The most authentic and down to earth experience you will have in Boston. Cash only. No formal menu, all from the memory of the amazing waiters. Almost anything can be made within reason, amazing Italian combos of various proteins, sauces, and hand made pastas. A ton of options to choose from, so you are bound to find something you will enjoy. BYOW/B. Even with a large party taking up half the dining area, the staff were personable and attentive. Food came out quicker than expected and every. single. dish. was amazing. The owner of the restaurant was coming around checking on tables striking up conversations, and you could feel the passion for the food in the space. Since there was no formal menu, you might expect prices to be a shock or surprise but everything is fairly priced at around 10-20 dollars for great portion sizes. An absolute must try if you are in the area craving an authentic meal.

Google
Unique family restaurant with no menu. Bring your own bottle. Delicious food. The waitresses are super awesome. Felt like I knew them for years. Will definitely eat here again.

Scott Mellott

Google
Nice place and unique way of no printed menu. They tell you what they have for sauces, meats and pasta..... You pick one of each. I had the chicken Parm which was ok but not amazing. My gf has shrimp carbonara which she feels did an excellent job. So our experience was mixed depending upon the dish. I'd recommend you try it. It is cash only and BYOB.

Spencer Lynch

Google
Cash only and BYOB was all I needed to know about Nappi’s before we booked a reservation. I knew the food was going to be good, but it exceeded all expectation. House specials are posted on a chalkboard and the staff were very nice, knowledgeable, and efficient.

Jim Haynie

Google
Great service! Small restaurant. No menu. They tell you what proteins they have and way to make it. Food was good but a little pricey for dinner. No alcohol, but BYOB!

Kevin Huang

Google
Cash-only, no menu, all available food read out loud to you by the waitress. A real local spot for quality Italian food, we came on a Friday night and it was pretty packed and rowdy so try to make a reservation. The bread was delicious as well as the chicken parm with spaghetti. If you’re ever in the area and in the mood for home cooked Italian food, I would suggest Nappi’s.

Holly Lascko

Google
We ate our mussels and mushrooms so quickly, we didn't even think to get a photo. The chicken and veal parmigiana, bolognes sauce, and meatballs were all absolutely delicious! Loved that we could bring our own wine! Great service and never felt rushed.

Feels like stepping into nonna’s kitchen, an extension of your grandmother’s house :) Down to earth, local hidden gem vibes for the win in the middle of Medford. They can make you almost anything, but I HIGHLY recommend getting the Joey shrimp appetizer and the pork chops with vinegar peppers dish (add sausage). Shrimp is so juicy and the tomatoes so fresh it’ll rock your world. And the pork is so satisfyingly mouthwatering and savory, especially if you like all things vinegar.

Yelp
I grew up with my dad as an Italian restaurant owner and chef. This food is very much like a Nonna or my Aunt Mary would have cooked on a Sunday. We had our first visit to Nappi's last night. Shocked that I didn't know of it until friends filled me in. Impressed by the verbal menu. Service was excellent as were the two appetizers and 4 meals. Dining out for well prepared food is not cheap but I didn't find the prices anymore expensive than other small local restaurants. Veal Parmesan with pasta was just under $30. We opted for the homemade fusilli which was extra. Chicken piccata with pasta $26 was very well prepared and seasoned nicely with strong wine finish. Excellent eggplant with pasta $26. The artichoke heart appetizer was fantastic. Dipped in egg batter then pan fried lightly and topped with a balsamic glaze. Yes cash only and BYOB which is huge benefit to offset the price to dine compared to everywhere else. Very noisy but kind of like my Aunt Mary's house on a Sunday.

Yelp
I'm glad I read the reviews so I knew to bring cash and an idea of what I wanted to eat since the recite the menu. The bread to start was very nice. We got arancini appetizers which were the best Ive had. I chose veal saltamboco with fresh fusilli and was not disappointed. I brought a little back to my husband who agreed it was great. I saved room for dessert. I rarely see limoncello cake on a menu so I split that. It was big enough to share. Very nice and light after our meal. I also had a taste of chocolate cake which was divine. I wasn't upset with the bill considering all the food and the quality. The service was good. Def make a reservation on a Saturday night.

Yelp
This place is always buzzing. It's loud, authentic and everyone is always having a good time. The menu is whatever the chefs have in the back and communicated to you via waitress on megaphone. The portion sizes were big and I loved the flavors! Be sure to bring your own wine as well, and make a reservation. Just note that this is not the right place to go if you want a quiet dinner. However, everyone was super friendly!
google avatar

Colin P.

Yelp
The best of the best! Service is great, ambience is amazing. No music playing, simply conversation and laughing. You'll need a nappy after Nappi!

Shaniqua C.

Yelp
The arancini was bland and cold in the middle. The bruchetta lacked balsamic flavor I enjoy. The service was excellent and the ambiance was homey and quaint. Unfortunately, I threw up the bruchetta later on which means I will not be returning

Nadine S.

Yelp
MAKE reservations (no need to go to THE north end, Boston HAVE cash!!!.. Only cash Have we'd some ITALIAN tapas!!

Mike S.

Yelp
Great spot for excellent Italian food, along with BYOB. No printed menus but the server knew every option and recited it flawlessly. Food was made to order and for our party of 6 it came at the same time. How anyone can give this place a bad review is beyond me.
google avatar

Melissa M.

Yelp
We. Love. Nappis. We literally dream about so many of their dishes. We went last Friday for our anniversary dinner. A friend gave us a great bottle of wine and we needed a great Italian meal to go with it! We love that it's BYOB. It's a small place, but the servers are extremely efficient and their outdoor space is nice. We started with the bruschetta with cheese and it wa delicious as always. I got the chicken broccoli Alfredo. The sauce is the perfect amount of creaminess and the chicken is plentiful. R got the veal parm. We love their red sauce and the fry on the veal was amazing. We also shared the raviolis. They were the right amount of Al dente and were sooo full of cheese. Always a great place to celebrate special occasions and reminder they are cash only!
google avatar

Yelp
Service was average, overly crowded, no menu so didn't know prices and meals were over priced. Both apps and entree were bland. Had to ask for my water to be refilled numerous times. Olive Garden would have been better and that place is shit. Never going back.
google avatar

John A.

Yelp
An authentic neighborhood experience. The place is tiny so be prepared with a reservation or you will sit outside (literally!). Been here a couple of times and most recently in January for my father's 80th birthday. Restaurant sang for him and people came up to him rest of night to congratulate him. Food is classic Italian. They hit chicken, veal, swordfish, shrimp with all the classic varieties and do it well. Homemade pasta and stuffed mushrooms are also standouts. BYOB is icing on the cake. Bring your favorite drinks to enjoy. Speaking of cake -- not really a dessert place. Plan ahead for a Porto and tiramisu elsewhere.
google avatar

David H.

Yelp
Excellent local Italian as good if not better than North End eateries! You can order what you like and they will make it for you. Excellent wait staff like your at home - lively vibe can be noisy but fun.

Nancy M.

Yelp
Top on my list for worst service and food. If you're planning to go to Nappi's. Stop and decide to go somewhere else. Fake Italian food. Service is terrible and very rude. They recite the menu once. No prices so they can charge whatever they want. SMH they're in business.

Yelp
The first time I came here I thought it was good. I think I was intimidated by the menu, I got lasagna which I don't even really eat. But the second time I was READY. BYOB, cash was prepped, I looked at photos. The vibe here is amazing, very family, loud, loving feel. Summertime, door is open, it's a bit sweaty but it's not an issue, just another part of the ambiance. Appetizers - you must get the Arancini, and the burrata was a special (YUM). I elevated my main course this time - clams, mussels, and shrimp over angel hair pasta and white sauce (no scallops - not sure if they ever have them). It was spectacular. Sister got a salmon fat diovla - yes, yum. Server was awesome (Erica I think it was), who simply spat off the entire long menu. And to end the best dessert I think I've ever had, the Tiramisu. Can't wait to come back (make a reservation).

Trevor W.

Yelp
Do not order the chicken piccata. I'm telling you right now it's inedible. Do however order the stuffed calamari appetizer it is phenomenal. Arancini is good but not properly made. House made fusilli is alright. Tiramisu is to die for! Service is unprofessional but in a very comfortable way, feels as though you are being served by a friend. Disrespectful to my italian heritage.

Yelp
I saw Nappi's on TV and decided to give it a try. When I walked in, I saw employees but no one greeted me, no one offered to assist me. After awhile, I approached a female employee located by the kitchen. She seemed blank and unaware. I asked her for a menu and she seemed flustered, said something inaudible and walked away. 15 minutes later, I asked again for a menu and she seemed bothered. I ordered the chicken saltamboca. It wasn't very good. It lacked flavor and, overall, I was disappointed with the food and the service. I can't recommend it, and I don't think I'll go again.

Jenni P.

Yelp
We were so excited to try this place after reading the reviews. As a first generation New York Italian the food was really just up to par to what your family makes for a Sunday dinner. Which would have been okay and comforting if not for the $85 bill. For just 1 app and 2 pasta dishes, only one with meat (sausage). For a price like that I'd rather go into the seaport for a fancy night out instead of eating what can easily be cooked at home.

Kenny B.

Yelp
We called and asked if they would make stuffed galamri she said call me the day before you are coming and I will make it for you outstanding food service and we felt like we where in my mom's kitchen so good Thank You Nappi's of Medford see you soon

Yelp
What could be better than BYOB Italian?! No need to go to the North End for overpriced Italian dishes when Nappis offers better food for a lower price, and it's much easier to get to! There's street parking all around the area. They offer outdoor seating in the summer months and the outside is lit up all nicely. The inside is small but cozy. The coolest part about Nappis is that you can literally order anything you want, and they'll make it for you! I ordered a chicken pomodoro with vegetables over angel hair pasta, and it was out of this world! The portions are generous so you won't leave hungry! Easily the best Italian place around!
google avatar

Ally C.

Yelp
This restaurant is like being at your aunts house for a big family dinner except she is making what your requesting. While the restaurant is small, it is cozy. The waitresses read out what they have and you take it from there! We started with the burrata for an appetizer since it was the special and how can you go wrong with that? I was a little disappointed scallops were not on the menu but the salmon was great! With pink sauce and angel hair it was delish! Ended with tiramisu that was so good my sister walked up to the kitchen to compliment them!

Valerie J.

Yelp
The food is sometimes better than others, but usually very good. With no menu comes no prices. I went for lunch and got a clams casino appetizer and ravioli with a meatball. No drink, no dessert. I was charged almost $60. There were only about 5 small ravioli, which were good, as was the meatball; however, the clams (casino) were tiny and overcooked. I feel the price was very steep for what I had, especially at lunch. As far as ambiance: I was there at an off time, the woman (owner and waitress) was talking with a couple of older women (the only other people there) and never acknowledged me. I had to first ask for service and then later, ask for the check.

Eileen M.

Yelp
Service was excellent by Crystal, knew everything off the top of her head and kept us happy the whole time! It's BYOB and water and bread were readily served. The arancinis as an app were delicious -4 small scrumptious rice balls that were perfectly cooked. My husband had ravioli bolognese that was delicious. I tried the haddock Marsala with homemade fusilli that was outstanding! Dessert was a couple of fresh cannolis and a limoncello cake, both a tasty treat. Definitely will go back when we are back in the Medford area!!!

Angela C.

Yelp
Very good food. Prices great. Feels like eating at home . Waitresses great. Love Nappi's!

Mary B.

Yelp
Good food. Good service. Loud. Really loud. Party of 8 and we would all go back but in smaller group
google avatar

Y R.

Yelp
It's excellent! The food is the best, nothing like it around. It Is warm and cozy, and it never has the same menu. But if you want something, if he Jn jas it, he does everything to aim to please! They are the nicest people and cook with their heart. Everyone Loves this place like being home you feel the warmth and the service is fantastic.

Thomas S.

Yelp
Ambiance: much too noisy with a quarter occupancy Food: quite pedestrian - little or no flavor but ample portions Service: excellent in every aspect A one and done restaurant

Dan L.

Yelp
if you are going to charge top dollar the food has to be spot on. i ordered veal parm, i didn't know somehow veal can't be real. i didn't that was a thing. i was very disappointed for over $30.00 dish should also come with fresh pasta.
google avatar

John L.

Yelp
R U f***g kidding me?! I don't want to leave a review. I don't want the world discovering this place. I don't want the Red Sox to win games (I am from NY). I don't want to wait to eat here. Ever. Again. I am in escrow on the house next door so I can be as close to this place as possible. I don't want to leave a review bc I feel like I just found something special and I don't want to share ... yet .... But I am. It's time. Anna- best waitress/chef/owner and the food kicks you right in your ass. Love love love Nappis. I want to be buried here.

Gintaras L.

Yelp
Excellent! Five stars! Amazing food; great service; awesome ambiance! Highly recommended!

Mark K.

Yelp
I love Nappi's. The food is excellent. The service is great. The wait staff hustles. So it can be a bit loud but what restaurant isn't ? If your looking to have a quiet dinner stay at home. As for the food the chicken parm is awesome ! Apps are top notch too ! Eggplant rollatini oozing with warm ricotta cheese is fantastic. The clams casino comes out piping hot and has a tiny bit of bacon on top and it's delicious. The Joey Shrimp is phenomenal too. Nice size shrimp sautéed and served with marinara sauce. Nappi's is a hidden gem !!

Angel of B.

Yelp
We cannot wait to return here. The food was great and the atmosphere genuine. Great service. Cash only, no menus, and byob. The server recites the menu. It was lively when we went.

Lorraine G.

Yelp
So we decided to try this restaurant and even though the food was good the atmosphere was not. If you are looking to have a dinner with some good conversation, this is not the place. It was so freaking loud that you could not hear yourself think or enjoy your meal. It is a BYOB place when it should be a BYO noice canceling head phones place. When grown adults can't handle their liquor and get louder than being at a rock concert and have no consideration for the other patrons, this is not the place for you. Don't think we will be going back anytime soon.

Yelp
Nappi's is like a north end restaurant in Medford. Very good food, kind of pricy but not too bad, we celebrated my wife's birthday here, she and I both got Eggplant Parmesian, my daughter and her boyfriend got Pesto and a Seafood Dish, Delicious for sure!!!! The bill was about $220 for 4 so not too bad, this is without wine as you have to bring your own. You have to also bring cash as they don't take credit cards.

Elaine C.

Yelp
Terrible food,no menu so prices aren't posted.Service was average. The only plus?Bring your own booze.

Ralph A.

Yelp
On 8/20/2024 we went to lunch celebrating a family get together at Nappi's Restaurant in Medford. The waitress was pleasant and we ordered. There were 6 of us including a 4 year old. We placed our orders around the table. I ordered an onion, peppers and sausage sandwich. The roll was fine but the rest of the ingredients were totallly burnt. I couldn't even salvage a few peppers. My wife ordered mussels. She had difficulty lifting them out of the shells. They came out stringy and broken. There was no taste but worse than that, they smelled terrible. At one point, our great granddaughter asked to go to the bathroom so she could wash her hands. She said she didn't like the smell so she wanted to smell the soap on her hands. I have to admit the mussels had the odor of sweaty feet. Some of the mussels did not open and were not to be eaten. When we got outside, our son informed me that the smell was horrible. He was concerned that my wife might get sick. Her fingers were sticky and coated with something that would not come off without a wet wipe. It took two hand washings to get rid of the odor. All in all, it was an expensive meal that was not worth it. We all ate very little. The Arancini were enjoyed by those who could eat them and also the shrimp. The 4 year old did like her meatball. However, the for from my wife's mussels ruined the meal. We will not be going back to Nappi's

S G.

Yelp
DISGUSTING. Was there for first time. My kid bit into her meatball sub- threw it out tasted like Costco meatballs. WTH-artichokes that I had cooked 2 Ways-disgrace to the Italian heritage. Chicken piccata? No mushrooms and no capers. Bland. Lastly, chicken fingers, how do you screw that up? Spent $80 for a first try and NEVER again.
google avatar

Andrew P.

Yelp
Veal is thick and second or third cut. Veal should be able to be cut with a fork. Other foods are good, Pork Chops excellent! Service is OK, Wife (owner) is sometimes stressed. Restaurant is quaint and family atmosphere!
google avatar

Martha S.

Yelp
I love eggplant but I don't love breaded eggplant. Nappis is good but could be better if they perfected the eggplant. I still haven't found a great place that serves unbreaded eggplant. Atmosphere is ok. It's a neighborhood food place and I'm sure the owners put their soul into pleasing their customers.

L D.

Yelp
I've been going to Nappi's Restaurant for years. The service over the years has remained amazing! Actually we have grown so close to everyone at Nappi's. Beyond that, the food has remained amazing. There is not a restaurant I recommend more!!
google avatar

Joie T.

Yelp
BYOB is a plus!! Some of the food here is either a hit or miss. No menu available, so you need to come in knowing what you like. Things to order: Escargot appetizer (buttery and out of shell already) Seafood Fra Diavolo (yummy, as it should be) Things not to order: Meatball appetizer (bland, don't like the sauce) Calamari appetizer (sauce was no good, calamari was tiny)

Jenna W.

Yelp
Went recently and was a bit disappointed. I love the BYOB aspect but the food fell short.
google avatar

Alex K.

Yelp
Five phat stars for Nappi's. This is no tourist trap like the many "authentic" Italian places peppered throughout Boston. Nappi's is the real McCoy. Located in the wicked Italian city of "Meffa" this joint is for regulars and those "in the know." Best of all, as everyone ("in the know" knows) it's BYOB or wine or hard booze or Four Locos, etc. Save money AND drink whatcha like... This is no frills and unpretenous as it gets and the food is very good. We got the Shrimp Joey which was delish as could be and a unique-tasting sauce with garlic and delicately tomato-y. I'm pretty certain that they breed their own shrimp out back because this is the first time I ever had shrimp that was actually tender and wasn't like the usual vulcanized rubber. The main courses for us were Veal Saltimboca and Chicken Parm. We opted for the homemade "Fusilli Jerry" for a two-buck upcharge -YOLO. Our meals were out of this world and delish. All prepared to order. No heatlamps or military commissary culinary techniques like most all places. Our waitress, Krystal, was "on point" and wicked nice. Peep this place out but bring your earplugs because the folks here are LOUD AF in this teenie and cramped dining area. No social decorum required... See you in Meffa, YELPahs...

T. C.

Yelp
BYOB is great.. but What is the issue about not stating prices? Went with a group.. 6 people 6 dinners no app .. $150 Why not say upfront what dishes cost? Meat/no meat fish/ no fish vegetables only etc Food was fine.. might go back.. but.. Why the mystery pricing?
google avatar

Karen V.

Yelp
My boyfriend and I came to Nappi's for our anniversary and absolutely loved it! We started off with the eggplant rollatini (which I highly recommend!!!). I ordered the chicken and broccoli alfredo with fusilli pasta and added shrimp. He ordered the bolognese ziti with the homemade meatballs. We absolutely loved our meals and enjoy the concept of building your own meal as every meal is made fresh and tailored to your needs. We also had the tiramisu for dessert which tasted homemade. Best tiramisu I've had so far! In addition to building your own meal you are also able to BYOB. It is cash only but that was something we knew ahead of time and was not an issue. Would highly recommend Nappi's and we are definitely coming back!!

Jim P.

Yelp
Found this restaurant while searching for a take out dinner. The food was fantastic and cooked to perfection. It was also affordable. Will make it a point to return, sit down, and explore the rest of the menu items. We love Italian food. Give it a try. It won't disappoint.

Simon D.

Yelp
This place is amazing. Feels like eating in an old country Italian home. Small, cozy, total focus on just good home cooked food with your favorite bottle of wine (BYOB). Loved the meat balls and clams casino, followed by Veal Saltimbocca and Lasagna. The food portions were perfect, not too much sauce and lots of flavor. And the Tiramasu was amazing. Great service too!

Courtney B.

Yelp
Excellent authentic Italian food and great service! Make a reservation! This place gets packed!
google avatar

Margot B.

Yelp
Such a fun place! No menu but they have whatever your heart desires! Very loud and tight squeeze but it's like a real family Italian dinner. And best part is it is BYOB. Yes please!

Lara R.

Yelp
Food was okay, but the ambiance was awful. We came on a Saturday night and found this spot with great reviews. It was nothing like them. The place was filled to the brim, and the decibels reached over 100 at some points. We were getting headaches just waiting for our food. The food was okay, especially the carbonara. It was good, just not worth the ridiculous prices. Besides, they don't have menus, so you can't check the price before ordering. The waitress (who was very nice) tells you the entire menu, which made the whole ordeal worse. It ended up being about $30 per person with no drinks or apps for mediocre food. It was impossible to have conversations or enjoy a family dinner.

Rohaan H.

Yelp
very great food and good customer service. very nice and chill looking place. Nappi is a great guy.
