The 14 Best Restaurants in Pleasanton - San Francisco - The Infatuation

"Naschmarkt feels like an Alpine lodge thanks to a dimly lit dining room, warm wood, and exposed brick. It's exactly where you want to be when it’s cold out. Settle in and get the pretzel that comes with an intensely malty beer-cheese sauce you’ll happily lick clean when pretzel reserves have been depleted. Follow it up with the pork wiener schnitzel that’s served with a tangy lingonberry sauce that improves everything it touches. The wine list leans Austrian and German—our pick is a glass of dry grüner veltliner, which pairs well with anything rich, like the Hungarian beef goulash over buttery herbed spätzle (another favorite of ours). Aim for a reservation on weekends when the schnitzel-seeking crowds are on the prowl." - gabi moskowitz

The 21 Best Restaurants In Palo Alto

"Naschmarkt is a fancy Austrian place that nails the art of a power lunch. Water is served in goblets, there are wine bottles in neatly shelved rows on every wall, and the soundtrack is smooth jazz. While a place like this could easily be corporate card fodder with no substance, the food is as hearty as it is delicious—especially the beef goulash that falls apart, and the pork schnitzel sandwich on a pillowy pretzel bun. But the sleeper hit is the fries, which have a touch of truffle oil and extra crispy edges. " - julia chen 1, ricky rodriguez

So I was at this place a year ago and the food back then was really bad. Yes the place has improved but the inconsistencies is what kills the experience. Let's start from the top The pretzel is under baked and lacks its crunch. Also don't serve pretzels with queso . It doesn't go together. The sausage trio is nice but the sauerkraut and red cabbage are not. The sauerkraut gives you gas like there is no tomorrow, good sauerkraut doesn't. This happens when the sauerkraut isn't pickled long enough. The mussels were nice but the provencale sauce had nothing to do with provencale. Lacked herbs, garlic and spices The trout was nice and the caper lemon sauce added a nice touch to it. The gulasch lacks depth and the spaetzle was an insult to the taste buds. Spaetzle need to be pan roasted after you pull them out of the water. They need to be crunchy on the outside and chewy on the inside. No sauce needed, the sauce comes with the meat dish and rounds out the gulasch. Don't try the Sacher torte as it's not a Sacher torte. It's a chewy chocolate sponge cake with apricot sauce but that is not Sacher. The portions are large and the prices high. I suggest reduce the portion size and focus on the complete quality of every dish you serve up. Nice service and setting but lots of work to do

Stopped in for a Saturday night dinner. Food was very tasty! Service was good. Atmosphere was lovely. We ordered the recommended homemade pretzel, Jager schnitzel and Hungarian Beef Goulash. Extensive wine list. We will return!

The food was excellent, especially the salad — beautifully presented and incredibly tasty! The service was great too. I asked for a mocktail even though it wasn’t on the menu, and they still made one for me — really appreciated that!

Perhaps I'm being a tad bit unfair here. Rarely do I remove stars when the food, service, atmosphere are all perfect. But due to the price and the portions, I'm not sure if I can justify a perfect overall experience. For reference, we were there for happy hour / light food and the bill came out to be $100+ per head. Naschmarkt made a mark in Campbell and when it first started to make waves in the Bay Area, it was known for its authentic Austrian sausages, pretzels, spatzles and beer, served in a setting where you'd think you're in Europe. The joint was small enough to give you the village pub vibe but truly well done in a way that there was no such experience around town. I remember many years ago a perfect date night. Naschmarkt Palo Alto is a welcome expansion and the team is now playing major league. Naschmarkt hasn't been coy here but rather doubled down. The interior is impeccable and a perfect high-end European bistro / pub with that Austrian feel. The food is great as ever with awesome service. And a wide selection of brews and at this point, you can't pick a better place for an after-work foor and beer. But this is exactly where the place starts to be confusing. Justifying their high prices (which I guess they gradually raised during their popularity rise), the restaurant is absolutely ostracizing the casual crowd, the stop-by ad hoc vibe, and thus also losing the essence of a homely village pub. Just how much do you want to pay for 3 sausages? Good ones I may say. But this isn't steak is it? Also the portions are tiny. Are we doing Michelin-star style 15-course meal portions here? Is this place a joint for stopping by for a beer and bratwurst? Or are we now competing with sushi and steak? I understand that Palo Alto is expensive. But what made Naschmarkt great in the first place wasn't just food and drinks, but also the fact that you could enjoy comfort food with a comforting experience. And this is very much forgotten in Naschmarkt Palo Alto. I don't have to dine in an interior like a magainze shot when all I want are pretzels, sausages, and beer at a decent price, worrying about ordering too little. Please reconfigure the balance. Individual happy hour / light dinner prices at $100+ per head just doesn't work.

Went with a very large group on a Saturday night and it was good overall. Food was delicious and filling, but did take a while to come out (but they all came out at once). The servers were really attentive and would take away dirtied plates utensils between appetizer and entree. Reasons why not 5 stars: restaurant was a bit loud - had a bit of a hard time hearing people in my group in conversation. Also this place practices the slightly shady "sparkling water or still?" thing. Charged us $9 per bottle of sparkling water consumed - and servers would constantly refill as well. Which as a higher end sort of place is pretty common, but as people more used to casual eateries the practice is still kind of gross, imo.

Extremely good service. Very friendly staff. Surprised at how busy it was for a Tuesday night, but there was never a table open for more than a few minutes, and when our food came, I understood why. I started with the garlic soup, which was thick and creamy with scrumptious garlic flavors but not overwhelmingly potent. The goat cheese salad was huge and could have been a meal in and of itself. I ordered the Jager Schnitzel, easily enough to share. The pork was perfectly tender, almost didn't need a knife to cut it. The sauce was delicious, the mushrooms a perfect compliment as was the broccolini, though one spear was not enough. The accompanying spâtzle was moist yet firm and not slimy as it all to often is at other places. While the price point was a little off putting, the meal was very very good. The only drawback is how loud the restaurant is.

A pretty decent restaurant serving Austrian cuisine. I enjoyed the food here. Pretty good atmosphere and warm customer service. Sausage Trio: Three types of pork sausage with red cabbage, sauerkraut, caramelized onions, Dijon mustard, and potato salad. The sausages have a crispy skin and balanced flavor; I enjoyed the paprika wurst most. The refreshing potato salad includes cucumber and sour cream, with fennel adding a unique touch. The classic Wiener Schnitzel made of veal is well executed, with an enticing golden crust and tender, thin meat. It's served on a warm plate with right temperature. I really liked the Sachertorte, a traditional Austrian chocolate cake. This delightful dessert features dense chocolate layers with a thin layer of apricot preserves, covered in dark chocolate icing, and paired with unsweetened whipped cream. The mix of chocolate and lightly sour apricot was enjoyable. While some might find it a bit dry compared to softer butter sponge cakes, it's a famous Austrian treat worth trying. The chef did an excellent job bringing it to the Bay Area. The pork belly is okay, IMO the large piece pork belly has good presentation but the center isn't very flavorful. Would skip this and try something else next time.

Very good German / Austria food. Pork chop is juicy and tasty. Sausage trio is excellent. Sour red cabbage is one of the best ever tried. Souffle is super good with blueberries and ice cream.

Yelp
I've had this place on my list for a while and finally decided to drive over to that side of the Bay for an early anniversary lunch celebration. I don't typically get the opportunity to eat this type of food so this was a new but welcome experience. We ordered the homemade pretzel, sausage trio, Hungarian beef goulash, and classic wiener schnitzel to try out. The meal came with complimentary bread and butter before the appetizers came out. I'm not sure if this is typical but the bread was pretty tough? I'm used to softer bread so we didn't eat much of it. But I would say everything that we ordered was spot on. The homemade pretzel was warm and soft, which just the right amount of salt. The beer cheese was new to me, but definitely a nice compliment to the pretzel. Super cheesy but not too salty. The sausage trio came with a special sausage of the day (forgot to ask), bratwurst, and paprikawurst on top of a bed of sauerkraut, cabbage, and onions. Also a side of mustard but I'm not a fan of mustard so I didn't use it. My favorite was the paprikawurst because there was a little heat to it and I found out here that I like sauerkraut! For the mains, while both were delicious, I definitely preferred the beef goulash more. Super super tender meat accompanied by a savory sauce. The meat gave way with just a touch of the fork. It was also topped with sour cream and pepper slices for a bit of a kick. The classic wiener schnitzel was thin but quite large and came with a simple arugula salad. It was not too oily and had just the right amount of seasoning. A side of spatzle was included with the goulash. It seemed a little bland but I've never had the dish before so not sure what it was supposed to be. Even though we were too full at the end for dessert, staff actually brought out a complimentary pistachio ice cream-like dessert for our celebration. I was so surprised and really appreciative that they did that! I had a great lunch here. Food came out at a great pace and we were checked on multiple times. They have indoor and outdoor seating that you can choose between. They also had a lot of other great dishes that sounded interesting. If I was in the area again, I'd definitely stop by.

Yelp
Nice change, if you are looking for a different cuisine. The Paprikawurst(Spicy Sausage) was yummy & Beet Salad fresh & tasty. For mains, the Tagliatelle Lamb Pasta was very tasty & the grilled Swordfish came on an interesting lentil bed. But the best dish was the Salzburg Dessert Souffle with vanilla ice-cream - delectable, an absolute must. Cozy place, a bit tight, but welcoming. The Service is quick & friendly.

Yelp
First time trying this cuisine and it definitely did not disappoint! We came here for our one year anniversary and it was perfect. It was quiet and relaxing restaurant. We were seated very quick and ordered some bread and spicy paprikawurst. The onions, Dijon mustard, and sauerkraut all paired so well together. It was my first time trying sauerkraut and i was only able to eat just a bit. It was still pretty good! We ordered the special of the day which was pork chop with garlic mash potatoes, broccolini, and apple bacon and the classic wiener schnitzel. The special was delicious! It was well prepared and tender. There were hints of sweetness and good balance of saltiness from the mash potatoes and meat. Not overly salty at all. The schnitzel was huge. And when i mean huge, i mean HUGE. There were two piece so they were not skimping on our dish. The meat was juicy and not dry. The lingonberry jam was my favorite. I'm not a fan of potato salads in general, so it tasted okay to me. Honestly, we would come back again and try other Austrian dishes. The experience was wonderful and opened our mouths to new flavors. The service was great. Our server was always attentive and made sure our needs were met.

Yelp
The food overall had a good balance of flavors, but texture or cook might have been off. Portions were more filling than expected. All sauces were very creamy but didn't feel sickening. Dishes had good composition and choice of vegetables, flavors, and textures. My favorites of what we ordered were the kraut rouladen and pretzel (asked for a side of mustard). The kraut rouladen was like a meatball over some creamy spatzle and crisped kale. Tasted good, but could have used more of a wetter sauce. Additionally, one of the roasted potato halves was burnt and dry. Pretzle was good and cheese paired nicely, but I liked their mustard a lot. Personally, it would have been more worthwhile to order the side pretzel ($12) which does not come with the cheese, but I just like mustard. Smoked chicken spatzle is different enough from the side spatzle you get with the entrees. Entree spatzles are reminiscent of mac and cheese. While the appetizer is as well very creamy, it has fresh elements with mushrooms and corn. Noodles are quite mushy compared to Italian pasta. Not sure what good spatzle is like, though. Swordfish was a little dry. Peppers were surprisingly spicy for a European place, but helped cut the creamy-ness. Jager schnitzel was covered in a mushroom sauce so it was no longer crunchy. It's probably good if you like schnitzel, but I do not. I can appreciate that it wasn't overly salty. Waitstaff did not seem to have great communication as we would tell or ask one server for something and have to repeat it to a different person who would come. Lovely ambiance, but it was very noisy inside and hard to hear the person across the table from me. Tables were also placed a little awkwardly so waitstaff would sometimes bump into me or have to stand close behind a diner to wait for someone to passbook. Still a lovely classy little place and I would come back.

Yelp
I brought my parents & relatives from out of town to an early dinner on Fri night; made same-day reso via OpenTable for 5:30p, party of 6. street parking was easy on that block for that time of evening. Service was lovely and the food was spectacular. 2 of us had a cocktail and glass of wine to start, then 6 entrées shared family style, finished w 2 desserts and an espresso. w tax + Large Party 20% gratuity automatically added to the bill, it was ~ $70 pp. Here's what we ordered: Drinks (Not pictured, I forgot): NAKED & FAMOUS 17 (off-menu) IBA official cocktail: equal parts mezcal, yellow Chartreuse, Aperol, and fresh lime juice. - Bartender was knowledgeable when I requested a cocktail w mezcal, he suggested this and I love chartreuse so I went with it. It was delicious and a perfect opener to the meal. SILVERADO SAUVIGNON BLANC (glass) 16 Entrées: Tonight's Special: PISTACHIO CRUSTED RACK OF LAMB 48 - delicious! if you have a preference for meat temp, let them know; one of the racks was medium rare on inside while the other one was sort of medium well. It worked for us since after slicing into 6 bone-in pcs, we had a variety of preferences among our party so everyone got to have their preferred temp. went well w the mashed potatoes and roasted vegetables. PAN ROASTED STURGEON 43 fresh corn grits, summer succotash, lordons - delicious, and the accompaniments were perfect, especially the fresh corn grits. CLASSIC WIENER SCHNITZEL 45 with lingonberry sauce, Austrian potato salad, lemon and crispy parsley - star of the show, went very well with the lingonberry sauce. JAGER SCHNITZEL 38 pork schnitzel braised in a mushroom cream sauce with spätzle, broccolini and garlic confit - classic, sauce was wonderfully creamy without overpowering the flavor of the pork. loved the abundant mushrooms, really good in the sauce. DOUBLE COOKED PORK BELLY 42 marinated cabbage salad, daikon, herbs, lime-soy vinaigrette, braised cherries, pumpkin seeds - perfectly crisp skin and very tender body, excellent dish. HUNGARIAN BEEF GOULASH 42 beef shoulder braised in paprika, served with herbed spätzle, Hungarian pepper and sour cream - classic, the meat is so soft and flavorful; definitely needs the spätzle (included) as it would be too salty on its own. Desserts: SALZBURGER NOCKERL 16 Fluffy vanilla soufflé with blueberry compote & vanilla bean ice cream - served freshly made, so fluffy and the combo w the compete + ice cream was decadent. APFEL STRUDEL 15 Apple & hazelnut strudel with whipped cream, toasted almonds & vanilla bean ice cream - hazelnut and toasted almonds were so fragrant! Coffee: MILCHKAFFEE 5.5 Single espresso with warm milk - revival after a long day lol I've been to the Campbell location a few times over the course of the last decade and at this point, the food at the newer Palo Alto location is even better. Everyone left full and happy :) Highly recommend!

Yelp
One word: YUM!!! I shared the Jager Schnitzel and the Lamb Tagliatelle with a friend and they were both so good. The spätzle blew me away-- it was perfectly light and buttery. A bit on the pricier side but you get what you pay for and this is 100% worth it! Ambience inside is amazing, good volume level and pretty upscale. The service was great too-- we didn't have to wait too long for anything! Finding parking is easy and the neighborhood around is super cute. Would highly recommend.

Yelp
Oh how I wish we had a restaurant like this a little closer to home! Naschmarkt had a beautiful interior decor, pleasant outdoor seating, wonderful food and drink options, and engaged service. Yes, it's a little pricey but not exorbitant for what it is. Along with beer and wine, we ordered: * Austrian Cold Cuts - the large platter included yummy cold cuts, pickled vegetables, pretzel chips, and 4 mounds of different spreads: Chicken Liver, Salmon Pate, Pork Rillette, and a spiced Goat Cheese. It was delicious but I would have preferred it served with their amazing bread which was brought later during our main course - 4/5 * Jager Schnitzel -- thin pork in a luscious mushroom sauce with charred broccolini and a creamy spaetzle side dish. I loved that the pork wasn't breaded and felt light for such a rich dish. The broccolini was so delicious that I wished there was more of it - 5/5. * Weiner Schnitzel with pork -- this was my husband's meal which I sampled, served with lingonberry sauce and a German-style potato salad. The breading on the pork was crispy and the lingonberry sauce balanced it perfectly - 4/5 We were too full for dessert, but the kindly servers brought us a goblet of their scrumptious sorbet anyway while singing Happy Birthday to my husband. It was a sweet ending in multiple ways to a very nice meal. 4.5 rounded up.

Yelp
Wow we were blown away by the amazing food, service and ambiance at this second location of Naschmarkt. It's on a lovely quiet corner in Palo Alto and the interior is lovely and warm. Our server was friendly and the manager was very engaging. They have a fab cocktail menu and every entree we got was delectable. The spaetzle are homemade and luxurious and come with most meals. Our dessert was an Austrian cream dish that was very unique and delicious. We will definitely be back!

Yelp
Solid 3.5 stars! The best thing we ordered was the dessert - apple strudel. Perfectly crispy and lightly burnt, not overly sweet. Wonderfully ending to a meal. The appetizers and entrees were decent - nothing to rave about. I particularly enjoyed the side dishes though. The vegetables were perfectly charred. The potato salad was an interesting middle point between more chunked potato salad and mashed potatoes. Everything was soaked in pickle juice. The flavors and the texture made it more refreshing than your usual German potato salad.

Nikki N.

Yelp
Pork chops are amazing. Very good friendly and quick service. Shtrudel is delicious. Definitely will go back again.

Yelp
Made a reservation on Yelp and came here with my family (party of 6) for Mother's Day dinner. All the staffs were so friendly- starting from the host, we felt very welcomed. The person who took care of us was Deniz, she was super sweet and patient. I started my dinner with a drink...because family does that to you ha. The Holunder was beautiful and delicious, and it put me in a good mood for the rest of the night lol. We ordered the Homemade pretzel to share and the tomato eggplant soup to tie dad over. The pretzel was on the saltier side but was delicious- especially with the bacon cheese dip. The soup was delicious and a little bit tart. For entrées, we ordered the Jager Schnitzel, the Beef Goulash, the Chicken Pot Pie, the Kraut Ruladen, the Butter Lettuce Salad and the special of the day, the Schlacht Platte, which was pork ribs with potato, sausage and sauerkraut. Out of everything, the favorites were the chicken pot pie and the Schlacht Platte. Everything else was good too but those are the two that stood out for us. We were stuffed but we had to get desserts. The plan was to get 2 desserts to share, until Deniz told us that the special of the night was a wild berry mille-feuille. So we got 3 desserts to share- the millefeuille, the blueberry soufflé and the apple streusel. They were AMAZING! I honestly would just come and order 3 desserts next time lol. The blueberry soufflé was piping hot, light yet creamy. The Apple streusel was my personal favorite- crispy and caramel-y with vanilla ice cream, YUM. The mille-feuille was made with phyllo dough instead of puff pastry so it was very light and just melted in our mouths. All of them were not overly sweet and it was the perfect way to end the night. 10/10 recommend!

Yelp
Had a lovely birthday dinner at our first visit to Naschmarkt. We ordered the sausage trio and pretzel with cheese to start - both were quite tasty. The sausage in particular was quite special. Jagerschnitzel was flavorful and delicious, and our kiddo was happy with a side of spatzel as an entree. Portions are huge! We probably should have paced ourselves better as we were full by dessert, but because #birthday obviously needed to end with something sweet. Apfelstrudel was incredible - a standout item. Our kiddo chose a molten chocolate cake - tasty and well executed, although less special than the strudel. Since the restaurant knew it was my birthday, they sent out a complimentary trio of sorbets with a candle - a generous and kind touch. The sorbets were strikingly good - passion fruit, mango, and strawberry. I left stuffed - probably ate enough to last me the rest of the birthday weekend, and we still had leftovers to take home. All in all, a great night out - we will be back!

Yelp
Made reservations online about an hour beforehand and luckily there were a lot of options. Indoor, outdoor, and bar seating are all options. We were seated indoors and the ambiance was great. Dimly lit and intimate setting with decorations that make you feel like you're in Europe. We ordered the homemade pretzel, jager schnitzel, and Hungarian beef goulash. Complimentary bread and butter upon request. Each entree came with spatzle which was a great plus. Pretzel could've been crispier on the outside and the beer-cheese sauce that came with it was on salty side. Jager schnitzel was pretty good and I enjoyed the mushroom cream sauce. Goulash was alright and didn't stand out much to me. Loved the spatzle! Went well with the entrees. Service was great! Waitress was very helpful and accommodating. Overall food was pretty good but on pricier side.
google avatar

Elaine W.

Yelp
Came here for a birthday. Loved the food. The cheese that came with the starter pretzel was delicious. The waiter left it for our later entrees when he cleared the plates. Schnitzel was very thin and well seasoned. All the sides were well flavored. The ambiance was great was well, and I was surprised the restaurant looked quite empty. Bill came out to be $150 for two people with two drinks.

Yelp
Watermelon Gazpacho 5 tomato soup, cilantro, black sesame, chili oil, sweet, refreshing Hungarian Beef Goulash 3 braised beef shoulder, slightly dry, paprika, pepper, sour cream, brown sauce, flavorful Pork Ribs 3 tender, slightly dry, lots of cartilage, slightly sweet sauce, need more sauce Smoked Pork Sausage 4 juicy, flavorful Spatzle 5 herbed egg noodle knots, cream sauce, rich flavor Peach Melba 4 canned peach slices, raspberry sauce, white chocolate mousse, vanilla bean gelato, macadamia nuts, not too sweet

Yelp
The area was busy on a Saturday night. Luckily we had reservations and were seated right away. Service was attentive and the food recommendations were appreciated. Our table ordered a variety of plates including the pretzel appetizer, fish entrees, pasta, and classic schnitzel. The side potato salad was actually one of our favorites. There is a parking lot across the street, or street parking.

Yelp
Excellent service and elevated (mostly) German food. I visited the Palo Alto location, but plan on stopping by Campbell as well. The Spätzle with chicken was fantastic, as was the Hungarian beef goulash. I'm a sucker for that dish and it didn't disappoint. So many other dishes on the menu look wonderful too. It's not inexpensive. Check the menu before going so you're not surprised, but totally worth it (IMHO). Service is outstanding. Friendly, helpful, courteous and refined. Befitting of the whole experience. I can't wait to return!

Yelp
Door Dashed the Schnitzel again. Once again, it was superb. I've had it close to a dozen times in the restaurant and delivered. It is the best I've had so far, anywhere. I've had Schmidt's in Wien, this is better.

Yelp
Went on a recommendation. Meh. We ordered several appetizers and a main. Comfort food but still could have been more flavorful

Yelp
This was our second visit here, but today the restaurant was much busier compared to the previous time. The noise level inside was a bit disturbing. However, the food was once again excellent. The Wiener Schnitzel was an outstanding dish. It paired perfectly with the spätzle I chose as a side. The service tonight was extraordinary. Our Turkish server provided a very dedicated and meticulous service. She made sure we were comfortable throughout the meal. Thank you very much for this lovely evening.

Yelp
Dinner was excellent, we went right when they opened a 5pm. Server and service was very good, the food was even better, bratwurst appetizer was really good with sauerkraut and mustard. Our dinners jaeger schnitzel was absolutely so good and huge, big enough to split but we will have another dinner with it. Very pleasant atmosphere, lighting and music. When we're back in town we'll do it again.

Yelp
Came in for Saturday night date night! Walked in at around 7:15PM with no reservation and were seated immediately. SCALLOPS - the highlight of the night! The peaches are absolute genius, brings out the natural sweetness of the scallop and works so well as a whole. This was my favorite dish, 10/10 recommend trying! CORN SOUP - super creamy and sweet, the popcorn garnish really ties everything together! I was a big fan of the added crunch and nostalgic popcorn aftertaste. Try to save some appetizer bread to dip into this, it's divine! KRAUT ROULADEN - very hearty and meaty dish! Definitely on the protein-heavy side, I do wish there were some lighter acidic vegetables served with this to help cut the heavy meat and sauce. However I am ignorant to what the traditional taste for this dish is, so I can't comment on if this is expected. Still a great dish, just a bit heavy for me and wishing there were some tomatoes available to compensate for the heaviness. HALIBUT - delicious, well-cooked, and comes with lots and lots of tomatoes! If you are sharing, I think this pairs great with the Kraut Rouladen so you can get your fix of tomatoes. Very solid entree. PEACH COBBLER (SPECIAL) - I really wanted to love it, but unfortunately a few issues that affected our enjoyment. The peaches are delicious and fresh, and pairs great with the ice cream, however I think there were just too many peaches and syrup and not enough crust to help round out the taste. We quickly finished the ice cream and crumble on top, but the dish is very deep and it's all peaches and syrup. Sad to say we had to leave some behind because it was just too rich without any graham crust or crumble to back it up. All around a solid dining experience - the lighting, ambience, and service were all up to par with the neighborhood and price point.

Yelp
Very good Austrian food. We have been there and I had the Wiener Schnitzel, which was in the top 5 of my all time schnitzels. For dessert we had Salzburger Nockerln which were just amazing! As an original Austrian I definitely recommend this place and will be back for sure.

Yelp
Noelle's Yelp Notebook 2023 Post Pandemic Chronicles Naschmarkt is hands down my favorite restaurant in the SF Bay Area. Our first experience at their new Palo Alto location was last year during the summer. My parents have been going to the original location in Campbell since it first opened. We went to the Naschmarkt location in Campbell this year for my birthday and it was good but the Palo Alto location is my favorite. When dining at the Palo Alto location you'll most likely be greeted by the friendly staff. The service is seamless from start to finish. The food is always fresh and delicious. They have made some updates to the interior of the restaurant with booths. The ambiance is welcoming and the food is comforting. We came here this past weekend for an early lunch. Our lunch this past weekend: Homemade Pretzel (5/5) made with double-smoked bacon, beer-cheese sauce, chives. Super delicious, good to share with 2 people ($16) Spatzle (5/5) made with Smoked Chicken, corn, brussels sprout leaves, tarragon and mushrooms. It's melt in your mouth delicious. I get this every time we go to the Palo Alto or Campbell location ($20) Steak Frittes (5/5) fiat iron steak, piquillo coulis, tavern fries. This was my pick for lunch and I loved it. It was cooked medium rare and just perfect!! ($30) Pork Schnitzel Sandwich (5/5) pork cutlet, lettuce, tomatoes, dill pickles, pretzel bun, house aioli, tavern fries. My husband had this for lunch. I had a bite and it was delicious! ($23) Pork Schnitzel (5/5) pork cutlet, berry sauce on side, served with potato salad. This is a dish our ten year old son usually picks when he's not ordering the Hungarian Beef Goulash. Our son loved his meal. ($38) Apple Strudel (5/5) apple & hazelnut strudel with whipped cream, toasted almonds & vanilla bean ice cream. My husband and son shared this dessert and loved it! Unfortunately, I'm allergic to nuts so I couldn't have any. ($15) Sacher Torte (5/5) Austrian chocolate cake with apricot preserves, whipped cream. I loved this dessert. It was the perfect pick as the end to a delicious meal. This is good to share between 2 people. My husband helped me finish this dessert. ($16) My family and I dine out often Friday through Sunday (the days I take off from making homemade meals). Naschmarkt checks off all the boxes for me- the understated elegance of the interior of the restaurant, the welcoming staff and the most delicious food that keeps you coming back for more. Do you remember the Disney movie Ratatouille when Anton Ego has a bite of the Ratatouille dish? With one bite Anton Ego is transported to his childhood and the delicious memory of his mother's cooking- well I'm not Anton Ego, yet it's like that for me here at Naschmarkt Palo Alto. The food here is simply delicious and is a winner in my Yelp Notebook. With one bite I was in love and still am. You won't be disappointed. Thank you Dino, Chef Sedat and your entire staff for making your restaurant a great experience for our family and friends!! Noelle's Notes Delicious Austrian Food Excellent customer service One of my favorite restaurants to dine Great spot for the solo diner, families and friends.

Yelp

This charming location, previously known as Antonio's Kitchen, has been beautifully renovated and now offers a wonderful array of authentic European cuisines. The menu is extensive and diverse, providing a delicious culinary exploration of Europe right in the heart of our city. The staff at Naschmarket deserve special mention for their friendly service and efficient manner. They always ensure that food and beverages are served promptly, adding to the overall pleasant dining experience. The ambiance, coupled with the excellent service and mouth-watering dishes, consistently ensures a positive experience for us. This is what keeps us returning to Naschmarket time and again for our family gatherings.

Yelp
We went for my partner's birthday because of his German heritage. Pricey but worth it. Great food, great service, cool ambiance. Everything was good from the pretzel appetizers to the apple strudel dessert. It's a splurge but I'd go back.

Yelp
Went here with my parents and my boyfriend with his mother for Mothers Day and for the first time and didn't know what to expect! Food was great I enjoyed the sausage trio where it's smoked pork, paprika and flavor of the day; the smoked pork and flavor of the day were our favorite while the paprika was too spicy for some (not for me) and the saurkraut and rotkohl paired with it well. For entrees; I got the sturgeon which I never had before and it didn't disappoint and my bfs mom getting the artic char which was sweet and creamy with its sauce. Everyone's favorite was the rabbit leg because it was springy and juicy, I wish it came with the whole rabbit for all of us to have a serving haha! My parents both got the same seafood pasta and it definitely got them full. Overall it was very comfy and family oriented and service was great! They accommodated the mothers with hot water when asked and turned on the heating lamp for my dad and gave us roses at the end for the holiday. :) I recommend this place !

Yelp
Mahalo Yelper Grey R. from CA for grabbing my attention to this restaurant! JagerSchnitzel, I am there! I came in for lunch and noted that the regular schnitzel was on that menu, but not the Jager. (Gravy and mushrooms are my weakness.) I asked if they could make the Jager for me and the chef obliged. Wow! So happy! Lots of mushrooms, satisfying gravy, broccolini and soft-thin schnitzel. Some soft cloves of garlic invite me to pop them into my mouth, but I cut them up to appear dainty. The spaetzle is a cheesy and decadent pleasure. Loved it all. I sampled the Hungarian stew and it was a soft piece of hearty meat in a thick and heavenly red sauce. There was some spicy red pepper slivers on it that I loved. In and outdoor seating. Best to make a reservation or do OpenTable. Wide selection of European beers and mega full bar. Free street parking.

Yelp
Naschmarkt - Palo Alto CA Wed 5/31/23 © New Austrian Cuisine! Sunshine day! Thank you Chef De Cuisine Sedat Balkan! And thank you Freddie for serving us! Local California flavors infused into Austrian fare, modeled after open air produce market in Vienna, the largest & rich with history! The kind of food I love. Living at the top of one's emotions ain't such a bad thing! Is it? Naschmarkt gives you the best of both worlds, the European variety x local rustic flavors, tapping into seasonal farmer's market harvest offerings... scrumptious foods! Guest count, 3. Prob ordered a little too much:) Execs dining at Naschmarkt on Birch St near 2nd downtown of Palo Alto, just off California Ave, which became permanently pedestrian after pandemic. Naschmarkt in Campbell has been there for about a decade, this 2nd location in Palo Alto open roughly a year, replaced Anatolian Kitchen which moved a block up the street. Austrian, German, Hungarian! You'll find something you like, it's a promise! The atmosphere is pretty casual & there's outside dining if you prefer. We dined inside, by the window, across from the brick wine wall display. First, a couple of cocktails. Ingredients detailed below if you want to take a shot at it! :) Mai Tai 20 Smith & Cross Jamaican Pot Still, Cointreau Orange liqueur, Orgeat syrup, lime, orange & pineapple juice, housemade pineapple syrup, float of Rhum J.M. Rose's Pear 18 Absolut Pear Vodka, St Germaine Elderflower liqueur, housemade pear & rosemary syrup, grapefruit & lime juice I spotted Rombauer Vineyards CA Zinfandel on the stylish wine rack, the brick wall showcasing the wines... this one vintage 2020, checked the price on the menu, it's reasonable $70. Delicious, juicy, outstanding vino from Napa!!! I've had it before, it's exceptional wine with lots of juicy flavors, drinks like richly enhanced grape juice! CHOICE OF SMOKED PORK BRATWURST OR SPICY PAPRIKAWURST 17 w braised sauerkraut, caramelized onions & Dijon mustard. Can't go wrong with sauerkraut bratwurst! SUN-DRIED TOMATO-EGGPLANT SOUP 15 w creme fraiche, crispy salami, grilled cheese crouton. Interesting soup combo, tomato & eggplant! You'd not expect that taste even if you think it's a natural mix! Plus a speck of a grilled cheese crouton & a shred of salami, for texture :-) JAGER SCHNITZEL 38 pork schnitzel braised in a mushroom cream sauce w spätzle, broccolini & garlic confit. Amazing schnitzel topped with mushrooms in gravy! DOUBLE-COOKED PORK BELLY 42 carrot puree with dill, sweet peas, roasted onion, master jus. That pork belly came out like Napoleon pastry, I tell ya! Mmm double cooked, truly delicious, with sweet peas! Yummy it is! HUNGARIAN BEEF GOULASH 42 beef shoulder braised in paprika, served with herbed spätzle, Hungarian pepper & sour cream. Tender w all the gravy, jus, reduced sauces & on a side, delectable herbed Spätzle, my god, so good! Awesome sauce in direct sense of the word + a lot of good meat:)) More than enough to share between the 3 of us! Spätzle, comes as your side w Schnitzel or Hungarian goulash! Exquisite fancy sibling of American Mac-n-cheese or Italian pasta! It's like noodles or miniature dumplings, made by scraping thin dough strips off the wooden surface into boiling water to cook & then enhanced w butter & spices & grated cheeses to create a delicious mixture that's a treat by itself, not just a side dish for gravy-rich meats! Herbed Spätzle, it's just so intricate, not your typical pasta w sauce but rather, it's a bouquet of tastes, it's an explosion! Loved it! Domaine Rolet Peré & Fils Crémant du Jura France $60 served here. It's inexpensive French champagne you can get for about $22/btl if you buy a case. Found locally for $324/case of 12. Still, intricate bubbles & crispy taste, refreshing & delicate! Crêpes Special Dessert! One with hazelnut filling & another vanilla? Frankly, I didn't catch it when Freddie explained, what's in it! It was not on the menu! Just bring it! Mmm delightful! Disappeared in minutes! Salzburger Nockerl 16 Fluffy vanilla soufflé, blueberry compote & vanilla bean ice cream ~ even if you didn't read the rest of this review, you've got to stop here & devour this unforgettable fluffy cloud of goodness! Trio of Sorbet 9 Daily selection of homemade sorbets, peach, lychee & something else exotic! Light, fruity, tongue-dancing! Kaffeespezialitäten Naschmarkt KAFFEE 12 House kaffee with Cointreau Orange liqueur & whipped cream, true indulgence! Hauskaffee 4 served with cream & nicely offsets your palate after rich meal, to recoil your appreciation of taste & flavor! *Inside my voice there is a hurricane Thunder and lightning And title waves, oh Cause there will be sunshine, tho the forecast is Grey Cause there will be sunshine, tho the forecast is Grey There will be sunshine, oh There will be sunshine! Where there's Grey, there's sunny, I promise you that! [ Review #767 w 14 pix on June 7, 2023 ]

Yelp
Very good food and service. Had a very fun evening. But expensive. Full meal will run well over $100 per person. (The schnitzel price is - well - outrageous.) Still, it is so hard to find Austrian food anywhere and done this well is virtually impossible. A great addition to the local scene.

Yelp
We've enjoyed the fabulous food and service here many times for dinner. Today we went for lunch and enjoyed the excellent Chicken Paprikash, which is only offered at lunchtime. The homemade cocktails and pretzels are always delightful, all their salads are great too. Attentive service is the icing on the cake. And check out the desserts in this photo. Do yourself a favor, go visit this neighborhood gem!

Yelp
*We took a half a point off on pricing and another half point for the depth of flavor in the entrees, but we would have rated this place 4.5/5 if it were possible.* Naschmarkt is located right off Cal Ave in Palo Alto, nestled amongst a variety of other dining options. The ambiance is slightly quieter than the main street, though it may have been because we arrived on the tail end of lunch service on a Saturday. There is both indoor and outdoor seating, with outdoor seating being nicely shaded. The service was excellent. The waiter was attentive without being intrusive, and went the extra mile with packing our leftovers. Now for the food... SAUSAGE TRIO: Despite being fairly pricey, this was definitely worth it and the serving size is large enough for 4 or even 6 people. All of the sausages were delicious in their own way, and the accompanying two types of sauerkraut and caramelized onions complemented the sausages well. The dish could be improved with a ground mustard rather than a Dijon - the astringency of the mustard would have nicely contrasted the savory flavor of the sausages. CHICKEN PAPRIKASH: The serving size for the chicken paprikash is just right for one person -- not taking appetizers into account. There were two large pieces of chicken thigh, heavily coated in the paprika braised sauce and topped with a dollop of sour cream, with pickles chili to garnish. The chicken is cooked tender, and was easy to tear apart with just a fork. We preferred the chicken over the beef, but just by a touch. HUNGARIAN BEEF GOULASH: The beef goulash was tender and shredded at the slightest touch. The pickled chilies that served as garnish cut the richness well, but the dish could have benefited from some more acid. The sauce, for its color, was actually quite mild and could have benefited from more spice. SPATZLE: This was not a separate dish but definitely deserves its own section. Each of the Chicken Paprikash and the Hungarian Beef Goulash came with a generous serving of spatzle, which was strangely the highlight of the entrees. We'd HIGHLY recommend trying the spatzle with each of the sauces from the chicken and beef entrees. The spatzle especially evolved into something amazing when you mixed in the chicken paprika sauce. Price wise, this place is on the pricier side. The two entrees were a bit pricier by just a smidge but the sausage trio is extremely overpriced if there are only two diners. Overall, we would come back again. We would order the sausages again (despite the price) and the Chicken Paprikash as well.

Yelp
(Daniel Craig voiceover) The vibe is best restaurant in Vienna but right here in Palo Alto! Ibrahim and Matt warmly greeted me! I chose to sit at the fabulous bar being tended by John. Matt recommended the Wiener Schnitzel w/ Jaeger set up. John agreed that was a a superb choice. Went with it. I asked for their most incredible drink. John said' "Smokey In The Rye." Incredible presentation and preparation. The flavor profile added by the smoke was incredible. The blow torch and wood means epic drink. Indubitably better than my usual Vesper Martini. And for dessert had to go with the Apfel Strudel. The texture, the mouthfeel was Bavarian Apple Pie. Delectable! But I have to get back to the Wiener Schnitzel w/ Jaeger set up. The creamy mushroom sauce and broccolini were just the perfect complement to the perfect cut of deep fried veal. The whole dining experience was a transportive feast for the senses. I felt like I was in Vienna on holiday while simultaneously doing recon ops for her majesty. I do love simultaneous and spontaneous. Isn't that right, ladies? The meal was an unparalleled European experience. The Smokey In The Rye the perfectly spectacular drink. Naschmarkt made me feel like Bond in Vienna...wait. Also, every 3rd Thurs, there's live music outside. How civilized! Would order everything again! But next time will be sure to bring an IG supermodel or two or perhaps a large party of rabble rousers to enjoy the fine Austrian cuisine! Super big thanks, Matt, John, and Ibrahim! Woohoo! I mean Cheerio! Bond out.

Yelp
I visited on 26 June and ordered the sausage trio ($36). The spicy sausage was quite good, the bratwurst tasted a bit off as if previously frozen, and the third mystery sausage was just OK. My disappointment with this meal was two fold: 1\ The bland potato salad - I am a fan of German potato salad but this offering was well off the flavor mark. 2\ The overly sweet sides of caramelized onions, red cabbage and sauerkraut. I will give you that caramelized onions and red cabbage can be sweet, but not as sweet as a dessert. However, I have NEVER encounter a sweet sauerkraut - just goes against the name of this favorite fermented vegetables. o - The Jager Schnitzel my wife ordered was a better choice. o - Service was excellent. o - Room was too noisy too for our table of 7 to easily carry on a conversation. The adjoining table had a few rather boisterous patrons.

Yelp
Oh so disappointing, really thought I was going to get real Austrian, not even close. Still puzzled why it is considered Austrian. Food in general is good, just not what I had hoped for: Gulasch, Apfelstrudel, Wienerschnitzel, Griesschmarn

Yelp
Sunday lunch - this location is much more spacious than the one in Campbell! Not as elbow to elbow with the next table but if they are full house you'll still hear next table's conversation if you wanted to. Modern decor with sparkly glasses and cutlery. Classy for any type of occasion. Yes it's pricy but it's Palo Alto, quality food and attentive service. Couldn't stick around for dessert but Hopi g to come back to try the soufflé and the dinner menu when warmer weather arrives. Street parking or parking lots nearby.

Yelp
This place is so good. We had the smoked chicken spetzel for starters. The Beef goulash was so tender and tasty. Their Apple strudel was amazing. Service was excellent. The owner is very welcoming and kind.

Yelp
I really like their schnitzel at their Los Gatos location so when I had a lunch appointment in Palo Alto, I quickly suggested Naschmarkt to try this new location. It didn't disappoint. The restaurant was very beautiful and clean. The service was very attentive, and they have a nice outside patio for al fresco lunch! I ordered the pretzel to start (yummy with a cheese sauce) and the schnitzel sandwich. It came with some herbed potatoes and made for a really nice lunch. I kept the cheese sauce from the pretzel and dipped my potatoes (oh man, they should sell this!) The schnitzel was tender and well seasoned, the bun was a pretzel bun and the aioli was flavorful. It all made for a nice lunch with my cousin. He ordered a house salad with salmon which he said was very good too.

Yelp
We had a wonderful , wonderful dinner at the Naschmarkt. The hosts could not have been more welcoming, the menu selections were excellent and the food turned out to be even more excellent than we hoped. We will return again very soon.

Yelp
Not sure what's going on with this typically reliable establishment. It was just a hot mess there last night. Hopefully an aberration but... They were down servers so we had someone just "helping out". After taking our drink orders and delivering one at a time we then waited 45 minutes for someone to take our order, ultimately calling over the manager to do so. Salads came out. The arugula was so wilted on the beet salad that we just pushed it aside. After another 45 minutes the temporary server asked us if we wanted our entrees fired. Meanwhile tables all around us had been served. Why is the restaurant asking the guests? The bartender was standing around since drink orders were not coming in so he finally jumped in to take orders at various tables so drinks could be served. He was abrupt but at least we were able to get a bottle of wine on the table. We decided to just skip dessert. Once requesting a check we realized we had been there nearly 3 hours. Thankfully the company was good! There was no acknowledgement or gesture for the comedy experience. Again hopefully just a bad night but heads up.

Yelp
We really wanted to love this Naschmarkt as we have enjoyed the dinners we have had in the Campbell location, but, with the exception of our interactions with the staff, the meal was a major disappointment. And the consensus at our table was the 3 stars is due to the great staff, not the food. First clue - the outside "heaters" were useless and inadequate so we ended up having to move inside and sit by the kitchen. When you have an outdoor area, make sure it's comfortable for your customers, especially when you have live music outside. Second clue - my wine was $24 a glass, and while I know the wine and like it, that's ridiculous. The most disappointing piece, however, was the blandness of the food. Goulash should not just be heavy, it should be flavorful. It wasn't. The Wiener Schnitzel was nowhere near as tasty as it should have been and tasted of oil, which it shouldn't. The person in our party who had steak was happy with it. The sides of red cabbage were fine but the spaetzle was too soft and slippery in our view. (When I make them, they are firmer. Just our preference.) For dessert we all shared the Apple strudel which had a tasty filling but not a flaky crust. The Cafe Amaretto was power packed - Wow! Very tasty. A meal that costs as much as this one did ( over $400 for 4) should be excellent. This was not. That said, there were a lot of staff, which is amazing these days, and they were very friendly.

Yelp
As a native Austrian who has been living on the east coast and west coast for over the decade, Naschmarkt is my favorite Austrian restaurant. It always amazes how fresh everything tastes. In Austria there is a saying that the quality of restaurant can be judged by trying their goulash. I have tried most dishes including the goulash and it is truly delicious. I also like their music selection.

Yelp
A completely random pre-birthday dinner for wife , got us to Naschmarkt. Our first time ever and we were definitely left craving for more. We got in late (as this was completely unplanned and as random as it gets) though must say that we found the parking spot right outside the parking lot that sits on the opposite side. Got in and were greeted with a warm welcome and got to a table right at the entrance (which wasn't a great idea as it was cold and the door was not closed since that would be used to serve the guests that were seated outside and welcome folks to the inside seating area. Our server Freddie was very friendly and did run us through the specials of the day. We started with an order of Paprikawurst for my wife and a Sweet Potato Soup for myself. Got great reviews for the Paprikawurst from my wife while the soup was beyond exceptional and not at all overly done (which has happened at a few places in the past). Getting ready for our main course , we did order a couple of Jasmine Green Teas to sip along with the amazing cuisine. We ordered the Grilled Swordfish without the Sausage ( as i only eat Halal meat) and Fisherman's Chowder and started waiting anxiously for the order to arrive :) . In the meanwhile i started browsing through the menu in detail and came across Goulash. Tried my luck in finding if the meat in the Goulash was Halal (its definitely made with Halal meat ) and since Freddie was busy , we got helped by Ugur who had quite a few quick conversations with us (as we talked to him about our trip to Turkey) and made our experience super awesome. I had to let Freddie know to have the Swordfish be prepared to be a to go item while I would have Goulash instead. Both the Chowder and the Goulash turned out to be beyond amazing. The Goulash was made to perfection with the meat tender just the right amount and the cream on top with the Hungarian Pepper garnish made the dish perfect. Chowder was very well received on the other side of the table as well , and i got a few bites from the bowl and it tasted awesome. We ended the evening with an Apfel Strudel (perfect balance of sugar and came out so yum) that paired so amazing with the tea that we were sipping all this while. Would say a great experience which we would definitely repeat more often than just once. Till next time!!!

Yelp
So excited they opened a second location. We have not been in years (to the Campbell location) but really enjoyed it when we last went. The food tasted just as we remembered it and the Spätzle with Smoked Chicken was so good (again)! I personally prefer the simplicity of the classic schnitzel but for a bit more pizazz, the Jäger was good as well. Homemade Pretzel with double smoked bacon, beer-cheese sauce, chives 16. Spätzle with Smoked Chicken, corn, sweet peas, tarragon and mushrooms 20. Classic Wiener Schnitzel with lingonberry sauce, Austrian potato salad, lemon and crispy parsley 42. Jäger Schnitzel: pork schnitzel braised in a mushroom cream sauce with spätzle, broccolini and garlic confit 38.

Yelp
Really excellent birthday dinner at this fancy Austrian place that feels fun / exciting but eats like fine dining (and the price is there also). Really excellent service, super great schnitzel, buttery spetzel, great sausage (especially the brat) and even the pretzels are perfection. Really enjoyed our meals and the vibe. Thanks!!

Yelp
Was so excited to try this new location. Been to the one in Campbell multiple times before COVID and have always loved this place and I'm thrilled they have another in PA now. Met up with girl friends for a multiple bday celebration meal and this location is much bigger and loved the outdoor seating. We were within a covered area outside and as the sun was setting they opened up the shades which was nice. They have heaters on top so I honestly didn't feel the cold. The server was amazing and very attentive. Provided great guidance on the drink selections and the meals. They even have their own version of a Moscow mule which was very refreshing! :) So our meal... we started with the Sausage Trio which had smoked pork bratwurst, spicy paprikawurst and the sausage of the day, all served with red cabbage, sauerkraut, caramelized onions, Dijon mustard & potato salad. We were told to enjoy the sausage with the potato salad - and the combo is delightful. The spicy paprikawurst definitely had a bit of a spice bite but with the cabbage and sauerkraut and potato was delicious! Can't recall the sausage of the day was other than it was a light color and delicious as well. Our server shared his favorite because he loves cream of mushroom soup - so he highlighted the Jäger Schnitzel which is a pork schnitzel that's un breaded but braised in a mushroom cream sauce, topped with broccolini and garlic confit. Their dish was also served with spätzle which I believe had a bit of that mushroom cream sauce. My girlfriends loved it and it was definitely a hit. Another friend got the pork belly which is a double cooked pork belly sitting on a cabbage salad, lime-soy vinaigrette and braised cherries. She thoroughly enjoyed her pork belly and was the first to finish her main course! Another friend - our healthy one - got the pan roasted halibut that sat on beautiful and colorful heirloom tomatoes, sweet peppers, scallions all tossed in a sherry vinaigrette. I have to say when I saw her dish I was very impressed and would love to try that next time as well. Lastly I got the Hungarian goulash which was a beef shoulder braised in paprika (which is THE SPICE in Hungary), topped with a Hungarian pepper and sour cream and served with herbed spätzle on the side. I've been to Hungary and their paprika is so good and with the tender beef braised with their paprika it was DELICIOUS. And the Hungarian pepper gave the bite a bit of heat which the sour cream gave the creaminess and calmness. An excellent dish! Especially when paired with the spätzle. We ended our meal with complimentary birthday sorbets as we were celebrating three birthdays and it was a PERFECT end to our meal. So light and refreshing! Again - the service was amazing and very attentive and the atmosphere was perfect for a GF reunion and celebration! The food was SO good that when our main courses came out - we were all quiet and eating and finally noticed the music that was playing as well! LOL - really added to the atmosphere. Can't wait to come back - there's just too many dishes and DRINKS to try...
