Greater Boston’s Best Bread Bakeries | Eater Boston

"This Concord bakery’s loaves are a common sight in stores throughout Massachusetts (and a little beyond); founded in 1998, the company does brisk wholesale business. But if you’re in West Concord, be sure to check out the bakery and cafe itself, which boasts comfortable vibes and scenic views. Nashoba Brook’s popular sourdough is made from the bakery’s own yeast captured from Concord grapes — try one of the embellished varieties, such as Harvest, which is full of pecans, cranberries, apricots, figs, and candied ginger." - Rachel Leah Blumenthal

Google
A great bakery and coffee show with delicious food. We stopped for some takeout and got a breakfast sandwich and a curried chicken salad along with coffee. Everything was fresh and delicious and the staff was helpful and friendly. It took a few minutes since it was all made to order but well worth a short wait. Everything was delicious and a great value for the quality and quantity. There is plenty of seating indoors with tables and chairs. This is a great option for breakfast or lunch in the area.

The major choc covered snail is amazing. The half consumed croissant sandwich (also excellent) is for comparison. Seems to be a favorite stopping point for cyclists in the morning.

If you're in Concord, don’t miss the artisan breads here! The Assbet and Great Meadow Sandwiches are exceptional and definitely worth trying. The cozy atmosphere and quality baked goods make it a must-visit!

Update: Adjusted my Service review based on my recent visits. Best local bakery and bread shop. Various artisan breads with sourdough are freshly baked every day. Pastries are delicious and unique.

Had a wonderful experience at Nashoba Brook Bakery today! The sandwich I had was absolutely delicious, with fresh ingredients and great attention to detail. The atmosphere was warm and cozy, making it a perfect spot to relax. Huge thanks to the team for the great service—I’ll definitely be coming back soon

We visited Nashoba Brook Bakery today and really enjoyed it! The sourdough breads are very famous, and I had the Harvest Bread Sandwich ( you can actually customise your sandwich) was delicious and came with a pickle on the side. The lavender coffee is also so tasty.

Google
Nashoba Brook Bakery is hands-down my favorite place to grab lunch! The atmosphere is cozy, the staff is always friendly and helpful, and the food never disappoints. They have awesome coffee too! My absolute favorite is the Walden sandwich — it’s delicious every single time. You can really tell they care about quality and their customers. Whether you're stopping in for a quick bite or taking your time to enjoy the space, it's always a great experience. Highly recommend!

Google
The place was in a corner, had very little sunlight and the place didn’t feel very lively. The service was good, and a nice lady informed us of what ingredients were in the pastries. However, the prices were steep for mediocre food. The blueberry muffin was alright, and the cream puff had very little of the raspberry cream and it was a 80/20 bread to cream ratio. Overall, the place was not worth the price.

Yelp
To update my earlier review, I've enjoyed returning to this staple of my hometown every time I visit, which has become at least once per month. It's not really visible from the street, the entrance on the other side of the building next to a gas station, but it's on the Concord river and has a nice outdoor eating area down the walkway with greenery next to a bridge, which I believe is on the main bike path, so great place to stop. They're known for their wide selection of breads and great sandwiches, one of my favs being the "Factory 152": garlic bread, chicken, cheese, lettuce, tomato, and chipotle mayo. You can also customize a sandwich if you want which I really like. They've overhauled their menu a bit recently and I'm getting the sense they like to refresh their smorgasbord (I wanted an excuse to use that word haha) and shake things up. While most of the numerous latte flavors they had have been removed, they still have a couple mochas, caramel, and two new house made vanilla flavors! One from Madagascar and the other paired with lavender. This is an exciting development and the Madagascar one I just had tasted fantastic. If you see the bear claw pastry I highly recommend that. I think they're cycling different items through, with these delicious cinnamon vanilla pastries/breads the last few times I've visited. There was a little mixup over the holidays with a soup, and most recently I had the privilege of meeting the owner and received a replacement soup which was very nice and says a lot about what kind of place it is. All their food and beverage items I've had have been wonderful, and there are unique ones that I haven't seen anywhere else. Nashoba has a great reputation in West Concord and it's a place you should for sure visit if you are in the area.

Yelp
I enjoy coming to Nashoba. I like the baked goods, sandwiches. I do find the mochas very bitter and always feel I have to ask for more syrups to balance the flavor since it doesn't taste quite right when I order them. I kinda wish Nashoba would find an alternate mocha/chocolate sauce for mochas. The service is great and I do enjoy the ambiance and vibe of Nashoba.

Yelp
Wow! We just found out about this phenomenal bakery that evidently many Yelp friends have already discovered and reviewed. We were on a mission to find a really good real slow rise sourdough bread. Surprisingly, our mission was accomplished. This bread which is baked fresh daily slowly rises by wild yeast from foraged Concord grapes. The company was established in 1998 and the dough is allowed to rise slowly for more than 24 hours. This exquisite bread is excellent, nutritious, handcrafted, and easy to digest. They use filtered water, wild yeast, organic whole wheat flour, and cornmeal to make this stone hearth recipe. This bread is free from any additives or preservatives and definitely a new favorite!

Yelp
Great spot. Delicious baked good. Excellent location. Perfect spot to refuel on a ride along the Bruce Freeman Rail Trail.

Yelp
This place got me through a hard time of my life. I would come here to escape and build my own sandwich and grab the "Secret Garden" latte. The service is very good, my favorite person is Grace, who was kind enough to remember my abstract order. It's located next to a brook which is nice to sit by in warmer weather and eat outside to get a bit of vitamin D.

Yelp
Ordered quiche. Ate half of it, found a feather embedded in the bottom of it. The staff was very apologetic but I will never be able to eat their quiche again!
google avatar

Yelp
It's hard to find but worth the effort! My very picky son had a "Build Your Own " sandwich with smoked turkey on wheat. He gobbled it up in no time and declared it was one of the best he's ever had. I had the Alcott and I agreed. The fresh bread and ingredients were outstanding! I also ate a slice of ham and tomato quiche after my voracious teenager ate half of my sandwich too! The counter service was efficient and helpful and there were several tables to help us relax and unwind in an unhurried atmosphere. Most sandwiches are $10.75 and they serve breakfast versions until noon. A true hidden gem!

Yelp
Now when you call, you get a headache of a "press 1 to blah blah blah" and a bunch of other time wasting non sense. I've been on hold for 15 minutes NOT during a rush with horrible obnoxious hold music. West Concord lost its soul. I said what I said.

Yelp
Nashoba Brook Bakery in West Concord, Massachusetts has the best bread on the planet. Period. Variety, exceptional quality, either to go or eat-in. Our fave breads: Sourdough; Harvest; French; 7-Grain. All savory food is amazing from perfectly made sandwiches, simple or elaborate; soups; quiches; and changing salads, muffins, scones, French toast. Many items are available for take-home: ready for soon, or frozen for later. Can't beat their whole quiches for a perfect easy meal. Sweets are extraordinary & ever-changing, too: berry pies, cherry cookie bars, lemon bars & cupcakes, chocolate brownies. By the piece or whole, desserts are great. Probably you'll be full from meal: bags for later or now are standard. No need to ask. Hot & Cold Coffees and Teas selection and quality: wow. just WOW. Cold juices & other beverages great too. Best of all: the atmosphere, inside and out. Warm, inviting, neighborly yet special. Nashoba Brook is a delightful tributary of the Assabet River, with picnic tables alongside its blue and green beauty: birds singing, and a lovely footbridge over the Brook leads to the parking lot in back, off Winthrop Street in West Concord (easily accessible from Mass Ave). Using GPS? Google medical building: " 56 Winthrop St, Concord, MA" to locate parking lot. Drive to back of lot: Look for bakery's Slow Rise trucks: you're there! Enter via footbridge over Nashoba Brook, walk to right till you see Nashoba Brook Bakery sign on left. Easier than it sounds -- with detailed how-to-get-there directions 1st time. There is also a bike rack at Bakery/town end of footbridge. Recent expansion led to front door on Mass Ave closed (wasn't as attractive); follow signs & listen for babbling Nashoba Brook to back of building to enter. Much nicer riverside back entrance -- I have used it since 1998! Indoors is filled with chairs (comfy low, or high for Brook views); paintings; photographs; plus notices for local music, drama, workshops, & other events. That wonderful aroma of breads baking, fresh coffee brewing, & delicious other dishes-that-day will lure you in. Breads, Breakfast, Brunch, and Lunch are core focus, so Nashoba Brokow Bakery does close at 4:00 pm. Open daily 8:00 am to 4:00 pm, 7 days a week. Great to follow on Insta and Facebook for specials. Or just get up and GO!!! You'll be glad you did.

Yelp
parking - first time here and it was a little difficult to find the place. we didn't know where to park, still don't, and couldn't figure it out. we ended up on a meter spot in the streets a couple parking lots away. ambiance - you walk in and through the long hallway corridor finally arriving at your destination, the ordering counter. we got the curry sandwich and the tarragon chicken sandwich. one cookie and one lemon bar later with a coffee. you get a cup and serve the coffee yourself. i like this as i can concoct the coffee to my likings. that day i put in 75% decaf with 25% medium roast. i already had some tea at home and didn't need to turn into beavis asking do you have tp for my bungholio. everything was super fresh. i'll have to ask if they can warm the sandwich up next time coz i think that would take it to the next level of sandwiches. dare i ask if they can panini it? the lemon bar was good in flavor, texture, and very loaded in sugar.

Yelp
I visited the bakery and cafe after enjoying some sourdough rolls through a food delivery service. We stopped by on a Saturday around lunch time. Each child had a sandwich (turkey for one and ham for the other.) My spouse and I shared a curried chicken salad. The server was very patient in explaining and walking me through the salad! The food tasted good and a good value, especially the kids sandwiches. They could definitely share one sandwich next time. Spouse and kids shared a chocolate chip cookie that I'm told was fine. I didn't buy any bread, but I'd summarize this as a bakery that also provides good value sandwiches. I was disappointed that none of the baked goods were sourdough; that would have been a pleasant surprise. I do love their mission with the sourdough bread.

Yelp
Came for the long weekend to have a scone and tea and look at the Concord River. Very relaxing. Very solid scone and 7 layer bar, which was really sweet but good. I had the orange hibiscus tea, which was full of flavor because of the sachet of tea they used.

Yelp
This place is very cute, there's a pedestrian bridge over a beautiful river to get here which I loved. A gorgeous outdoor area with a few tables to sit and eat, definitely my type of vibe. The exterior looks questionable at first, but it has a huge bakery inside and is much more comfortable once you walk in. The staff were very friendly, and the drinks were made efficiently but there was about a 10 minute wait for 2 sandwiches. I really enjoyed my breakfast sandwich, and the added watermelon was a major bonus! I ordered an egg & cheese sandwich on a croissant, but I got an ham, egg & cheese. A little disappointed with that minor negligence, because if I were completely strict with my diet as I used to be, or if I were one of the millions of Muslims around the world, it would be unacceptable to just take it off and eat it. I did, but if this mistake was not made they would have definitely gotten a higher rating. Pork is an absolute no, for myself and many others. Please pay attention! I'll definitely be returning in the future for a second chance, and I hope the mistake made at my first visit is not overlooked in the future.

Yelp
I'm so bummed to write a bad review. In all fairness, I did visit about 30 mins before they closed, so that might have made a difference. I walked in and no one acknowledged me at all despite being the only one in line. The two people behind the counter looked busy, so I waited...and waited...and waited. Finally, I just ordered and paid on their online kiosk-those orders looked like they were being attended to. I went to the bathroom while i waited and found it smelling like shit with paper towels all over the floor and the changing table broken. I had been pleased to see that there even was a changing table for my baby but I couldn't use it. Nor would i have because the bathroom was dirty and smelly. Nope. So, after 10 mins of no acknowledgement and no food, I just left. There was one other person in the whole bakery and still nothing from the staff. Keep my $12. I'll never be back.

Yelp
I went today 10/23/23. 1st time there. At least when I went the parking was full except for the handicap, the place inside was clean, friendly staff. I got their in-house sourdough bread, and is super good. My son got their croissant and it was good as well.

Patricia S.

Yelp
The business manager's response to my review is an insinuation that I was lying about my experience. I know what I saw, and the bread was not handled with the bag as a glove. End of story! However, I wish this bakery the best.

Nora C.

Yelp
The sourdough is top notch. The sandwiches are also delicious, however it's hit or miss whether they come how you ordered them. Today I ordered the factory 152 and it was great except there was no chicken on it lol. Kind of a rip off but I still ate it. I wish they had a little more attention to detail but i'm not gonna stop going there. Maybe just check the sandwich before you go back home or to work.

Colin B.

Yelp
I was waiting to pick up an online order during a not-very-busy time, and an older woman (maybe a manager?) came out from the back and asked if she could help anyone. Being next in line, I let her know I had an online order that was ready - she barely looked at me, said "that's great" in a weird condescending way, and then made a big show of greeting the person behind me in line by name and helping him. Even crazier was that the nice younger woman making coffee saw this, stopped what she was doing, and came over to help me without any surprise or apology, as if this happens all the time. Like others here it seems, I've tried to "root for" this place, despite multiple prior errors on orders and generally unhelpful vibes - will stop trying at this point.

Jordan N.

Yelp
great range of pastries and bread - very good service - also good to sit in as it is welcoming

Yelp
Nice bakery hidden from a busy street. Next to a relaxing brook. Good snacks and meals!

Yelp
Best potato bread anywhere. Traveled from N H to Concord M A. We recommend this Bakery.

Stona F.

Yelp
I've been coming to the Nashoba Brook Bakery for years and have always found the food (particularly the potato bread and their soups) to be fantastic. Visiting a cafe next to a scenic brook is hard to beat. The staff -- particularly Ashley, Nicole, and Alex -- are hard-working and focused on meeting the needs of an often-demanding crowd. The only complaint I have is about some of the customers. Something about our era (or maybe it's Massachusetts) makes a certain kind of customer feel entitled to be hyper-critical and assholic here on Yelp (and in restaurants). No, the Nashoba Brook Bakery isn't fine dining. But the food, service, and ambiance are almost always excellent. Consider being kind and understanding when you don't get exactly what you want, immediately. Might start a trend.

Michael H.

Yelp
Nicole and Alex, and their team are the hardest working people in show business at the NBB. They deserve more appreciation then they get from a very demanding daily crowd. My order is always done well and on time. I appreciate their attention to detail and that they strive to get it right. I also have observed the staff's patience and understanding with older customers that frequent the café. Best time to visit is after 1pm when the crowd lightens up.
google avatar

Andrea M.

Yelp
The breads are delicious. Soups are good too. Seating could be better. Sometimes tables are not clean especially during the lunch crowd.
google avatar

Cindy C.

Yelp
I went on the weekend and this is apparently a very famous and popular bakery. There's a line to order food, it moved pretty quick tho. I ordered their build your own sandwich, it's very good. There are a good amount of seating inside and outside. Parking could be hard when I'm the street gets busy. But this bakery has a large parking lot. I also bought some rosemary sour dough home. I'm not a huge fan of sour dough, but this tastes great with some light cream cheese. I would recommend dropping by if you are in the area. Their bread are also available at star market.

Lauren F.

Yelp
Came in today after being in the area for work. While a little difficult to locate, couldn't say enough positive about my experience here! Staff was so friendly and helpful. Food came out quickly and was delicious and fairly priced. Will absolutely come back again if in the area in the future!

Rosa P.

Yelp
We had coffee, breakfast and pastries and all of them were great The service we got with a big smile was very nice and what can I say about the ambiance? This place is very cozy

C. Lea O.

Yelp
The food is ok but it has definitely lost something since the pandemic. For example. Some of the niceties are just gone. Ordering the quiche. It's microwaved to oblivion, then no fresh fruit on the side or piece of bread anymore. These omissions may seem a minor complaint. But they were part of the experience of eating here. Service is lackluster and not trying to win any awards. Need some care here and perhaps a little enthusiasm, these wouldn't take much to provide and would be very appreciated!
google avatar

Schein P.

Yelp
Grab a coffee; and enjoy a muffin! While sipping tour coffee, relax by the window and watch the brook babbling by. Then, purchase a loaf of bread or a bagette for dinner. What a great way to start your day.
google avatar

Amanda S.

Yelp
Excellent bread and baked goods, a beautiful and fun local space to come and grab a warm drink and a cozy breakfast, lunch, or snack.

Lilly A.

Yelp
I adore this place! Always fresh, always delicious. And despite it nearly always being busy, I have never been disappointed by the service. I wish I lived closer so I could stop in more often. My only complaint is that sometimes when I arrive later in the day, the bakery case is a little picked over, but that only speaks to how in demand their goodies are. Always have to pick up a baguette or a loaf of sourdough, which my friends and I agree is without question the absolute best bread for avocado toast in the entire world.
google avatar

Donald A.

Yelp
Great sandwiches, bread was incredible too. Had a Turkey on sourdough either lettuce, tomato and avocado. Yum!
google avatar

Rebecca M.

Yelp
Why didn't I know about this place sooner? This bakery EXCELS when it comes to bread. They have an array of breads from the usual suspects like sourdough and multigrain to rotational offerings like pepperjack cheese bread and rosemary garlic bread. I got the pepperjack cheese bread and it was absolutely excellent. The next time I go I will be sure to visit on a day that they have the rosemary garlic bread (some of the bread offerings rotate so you may want to check in advance before you go if you have your heart set on a particular loaf!) I grabbed a peanut butter cookie and a chocolate peanut butter latte to go along with the bread. The peanut butter cookie was amongst the best I've ever had. Perfectly chewy with bits of peanuts and melt-in-your-mouth goodness. The latte was so-so. I don't normally get peanut butter in my drinks so I'd go for a different beverage next time. They have seating indoors and outdoors that overlooks a small river. Some people were enjoying their coffees and pastries outside and in a socially distant way. I'm not comfortable with that yet, but once more people receive their COVID vaccines I would love to be able to enjoy their outdoor space.

Foley R.

Yelp
so good i love their pumpkin cheesecake and their vanilla cupcakes are unbelievably good.
google avatar

Shannon S.

Yelp
I have noticed people mention the curried chicken salad sandwich a fair amount. I seem to be stuck on this sandwich. Every time I go there I expect to try something else, but somehow seem to always get this one!
google avatar

Gabrielle V.

Yelp
What an incredible place to eat outdoors! They have the BEST bread in town! They also have delicious sandwiches, homemade pies, cupcakes and cakes. We ate a prosciutto, goat and Gouda cheese, onion, lettuce and chipotle mayo sandwich- you can create your own. They also have great drinks such as kombucha and sparkling water from Italy. This place has incredible taste and I'm so glad we stopped by for Thanksgiving Eve! They are abiding by the Covid rules and regulations - and make sure you order ahead or you can wait in line for food too. The friendly staff, atmosphere and the food of course are absolutely excellent! GET DAT BREAD here!
google avatar

Diana N.

Yelp
I have tried their sourdough bread, raisin bread, chocolate croissant, chocolate chip cookie, and brownie so far. All were really good! Parking can be tricky to find, they actually have two lots, one that the GPS will take you to and then there's another parking lot where the benches are for outside eating. Nashoba brook makes breakfast as well as sandwiches for lunch. Next time, I definitely want to try one of their meals. When you walk inside, there's one entrance to walk in with stickers on the ground to ensure social distancing. You are then called up to the counter to order, and you can exit through a different door.
google avatar

Angela G.

Yelp
Everything is super good, try everything!, you will not regret it. The coffee is also yummy.

Lisa G.

Yelp
Stopped in here to order a sandwich and was very disappointed. The roasted turkey sandwich had mushy undercooked bread, shredded deli turkey that had no roasted flavor, hardly and bacon or avocado. This used to be one of our go-to places...
google avatar

Mel G.

Yelp
I was going for a hike in the area and was looking for a quick and tasty lunch. Nashoba Brook Bakery is tucked away in a larger office building of sorts and has a solid variety of sandwiches and bakery items as well as coffee for breakfast/brunch/lunch options. There are also a number of picnic tables outside overlooking a lovely view of the the brook, all in all making it a lovely pit stop on the way, or all in its own.
google avatar

Barbara K.

Yelp
Stopped in on the way to visit the Louisa May Alcott house in Concord, MA. I had the curried chicken salad, daughter had the beet and goat cheese salad, and hubs had the #4. The sourdough bread was delicious! We all enjoyed the food. It was a little hard to navigate with crutches. It would be helpful to have some paper menus, but the website worked. Everything was fresh and filling (not heavy). We sat outside - more crutches friendly.

Rafael M.

Yelp
Love the place and the food plus the coffee Staff is super friendly and professional You have to try it
google avatar

Paul S.

Yelp
I had the rueben sandwich. A dry toasted, non greasy tasty lunch with pickle wedge. Very light on the meat content. Definitely could beef it up. Inside was quaint. A Starbucks kinda feel to it. Pastry and coffee was very nice. Staff awesome. To get to a 5 they need to add the bèef.

Lisa T.

Yelp
Great little place hidden back in the country. Great quality food and drink. Love this place
google avatar

Ruiqi L.

Yelp
Love the smoked salmon breakfast! Matcha latte could use some liquid sugar. #9 (Cheddar, Apple, Arugula, Honey Mustard on Harvest) and #6 (Parma Prosciutto) are my favorites.
google avatar

Brooke S.

Yelp
Delicious food and drinks! And they compost so I love the sustainability of this place. The brook in the back is so peaceful and relaxing; a wonderful atmosphere. A must visit.
google avatar

Rob H.

Yelp
I like this place. I'll stop in to pick up their excellent bread, or croissants, and they earn top marks for that. But what I really like goes beyond mere baked goods and coffee. Nashoba Brook Bakery's ambiance is a little island of comfort that always recharges my spirits. It's eclectic, casual, comfortable, and just invites intimate conversation or individual reflection. I'm enjoying an excellent cup of coffee while sitting in an old Craftsman style armchair now, thinking about my day ahead. It's cold outside, and through the full length windows I can see Nashoba Brook burbling outside, and the understandably empty benches in the sunshine. Do stop in for Nashoba Brook Bakery's excellent sourdough, or sweet treat, or sandwich. Stay for the personal sustenance, and go forth recharged!
google avatar

Alyssa F.

Yelp
Bread, pastries, and coffee. Three of my favorite foods! Nashoba Brook Bakery is a little hard to find if you've never been here before, but as you make your way back to this cozy spot, you'll find a display filled with too many tasty looking treats, a large list of sandwiches, and numerous espresso/tea based drinks. I had a chai tea latte and a piece of French almond cake. The chai was excellent, just slightly sweet and nice and spicy. The French almond cake was good, but the texture wasn't my favorite on this cake. I would try something different next time! There is ample seating both inside and out, although the tables are strewn with slightly off putting signage requesting that patrons essentially eat and leave. I love working in coffee shops, as do many others, so I felt a little unwelcome with these signs. It seems like they're having issues with people camping out all day, but it made me feel uncomfortable about ordering a coffee/pastry and doing some work for a couple of hours. I don't think I would go back to work, but it would be nice for lunch/meeting friends.
google avatar

R B.

Yelp
The best sandwiches in the area! They are very hearty, and the bread is incredibly good. The Harvest Chicken Salad, Curried Chicken Salad, and Reuben are our favorites.
google avatar

Fred D.

Yelp
I've revised my review. Perhaps I over-reacted. The owner was kind enough to respond and make things right, so that shows me this is an establishment you should support. We will be back
